Jersey boats to mark anniversary of ‘mini Dunkirk’ in St Malo

st malo yacht club

In June 1940, two weeks after hundreds of little boats helped to evacuate 309,000 soldiers trapped on beaches at Dunkirk, the British Government called on Jersey to help evacuate St Malo and to assist Royal Engineers in destroying key installations including the port’s locks.

St Helier Yacht Club organised the operation and a flotilla comprising seven potato boats, 13 fishing boats and private yachts, the States launch, the Duchess of Normandy, a lifeboat and a Fleet Air Arm fast launch, crewed by sailors, fishermen, the town pilots and yachtsmen sailed for St Malo on 16 and 17 June.

St Malo evacuation veterans the late Pat Gruchy, Pop Newman and Bob Falle pictured in 2000 with the Fiona in the water below

The evacuation was a military success and Jersey’s little boats and crews returned safely to the Island. Each year the Yacht Club marks the anniversary of ‘mini Dunkirk’ with a race to St Malo and this year there will be celebrations in both ports.

The Vice-Commodore of St Helier Yacht Club, Steve Pearl said: ‘This is a major event in the club’s long history and one of which we are very proud. Although all of those who took part are no longer with us, it is important that we keep the tradition alive and commemorate the event.’

One of the Dunkirk ‘little boats’ taking part in celebrations is the Elvin, alongside the Fiona, from Jersey Heritage’s heritage boat collection.

The Elvin, which was built in 1937, recently took part in the 75th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk – featuring on BBC’s the One Show and in a documentary by Dan Snow about the ‘little ships of Dunkirk’.

The Elvin has been restored by Hal Perkins and she also returned to Dunkirk in 2010 for the 70 anniversary celebrations.

Kevin Le Seelleur tells the story of valour and seamanship which enabled the French port to be evacuated of military and civilian personnel 75 years ago:

The Diana pictured before the war (left) in 1937

IN the entrance to the St Helier Yacht Club clubhouse at South Pier is a little picture frame. It is ignored by most, but it contains a telegram dated 23 June 1940 which reads: ‘To Commodore, St Helier Yacht Club. Great help given by pilots and spirited enterprise of volunteers from St Helier Yacht Club which made possible withdrawal from St Malo in heavy weather. Warmly appreciated. Well done.’

Alongside the telegram is a plaque recording the names of the vessels and their crews which went to St Malo at the request of the Admiralty to help in the evacuation of military and civilian personnel from the port, and the disabling of the lock gates in June 1940.

In June 1980, watched by veterans of the evacuation, a plaque was unveiled at St Helier Yacht Club to mark the 40th anniversary of the event

For this, the club was later awarded the honour of wearing a defaced Red Ensign, and this weekend members of St Helier Yacht Club will again visit St Malo to celebrate the 75th anniversary of that occasion.

The call for help from the Admiralty had come in a telegram on Sunday 16 June 1940 addressed to the Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey, Major-General James Harrison, asking that Jersey send all available craft to St Malo to help the evacuation of British troops. The Lieutenant-Governor immediately contacted the Bailiff, Alexander Coutanche, who in turn contacted the Commodore of St Helier Yacht Club, W S Le Masurier. A meeting was held that afternoon in the club, a list of vessels which could be made ready at short notice was drawn up and volunteers came forward to man them.

The crews came not only from St Helier Yacht Club, but from a cross-section of local mariners, including fishermen, local boatmen, States employees and members of the local lifeboat crew. Such was the speed of reaction that the first vessels departed just before midnight that day. A further convoy sailed the next day.

At the same time, in Portsmouth preparations were being finalised for the departure of an explosives party led by Commander C D Howard-Johnson, tasked with blowing up the lock gates at St Malo. They boarded the destroyer HMS Wild Swan and departed from Portsmouth at 2 pm on Sunday 16 June with orders to call in at St Helier en route.

The dramatic scene as St Malo is evacuated in June 1940

The vessel arrived in Jersey at 7.30 pm, and after calling on Major-General Harrison, Commander Howard-Johnson went with the Harbourmaster and boarded seven cargo vessels which were waiting to load potatoes and requested that they proceed to St Malo to help in the evacuation, with local pilots having agreed to go with them. He returned to Wild Swan, which departed Jersey at 11:30 pm.

After discharging the demolition party and eight tons of explosives in St Malo, Wild Swan departed, leaving them to find their own way home.

During the Monday the yachts conveyed personnel as required to the vessels anchored off St Malo, and on the Tuesday morning preparations were in hand for the blowing of the fuel tanks and the lock gates. At 1.20 pm on 18 June, with German forces fast approaching the outskirts of St Malo, the petrol depot tanks were blown up, followed soon after by the charges on the lock gates.

The demolition party and a few civilians then boarded the Jersey craft to return to St Helier. It was not an easy trip, as by this time the wind had increased to Force 5, which resulted in a most unpleasant and dangerous trip, with the last of the yachts not arriving until Wednesday morning.

It was remarkable that at such short notice, an operation of this size could be carried out with most crews in unfamiliar vessels, no navigational lights and in poor weather conditions. The were a few problems with some of the boats, but most remarkably, they all returned.

On reaching Jersey, Commander Howard-Johnson requisitioned the steamer Rye to transport his party back to England, and the Admiralty sent the telegram of thanks to the Commodore of the Yacht Club.

Because of the war, there was a news black-out, so no details of this operation were published in the media at the time, and within a week many who had taken part in the operation were evacuated to England.

After the Liberation, stories were published in the Evening Post, and St Heller Yacht Club asked those who had gone to St Malo to write a log of their part in the evacuation, but a number had not returned to the Island after the war, so a complete record could not be written.

The defaced Red Ensign

In June 1949 Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Island and Prince Philip expressed a wish to meet those who had taken part in the St Malo operation, and he offered his personal thanks.

The club tried to obtain some recognition for the part it played at St Malo in 1940, but to no avail, and there the matter rested. It was a chance meeting of two people in the Normandy port of Carteret that was to bring about the club’s Battle Honour. Club member Pat Gruchy was there with his boat, flying the club’s burgee, when a man on the quay asked him if the club had received any recognition for the part it played in the evacuation of St Malo.

That man was none other than Commander Howard-Johnson, who had by then risen to the rank of Captain, had been awarded the DSO and was in command of HMS Vernon, the underwater warfare school at Portsmouth.

Denny Mourant's Girl Joyce took part in the evacuation

When informed that the club had not received any recognition, he said that it should have been, and suggested that they write again to the authorities, adding that he would ensure that the role the Island played in the evacuation would be made known

The club duly took the matter up, and on 12 May 1952 the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Arthur Grasett, wrote to the Commodore informing him: ‘The Lords of the Admiralty have granted St Helier Yacht Club a special Battle Honour in recognition of its members’ response to the Admiralty’s request for help in 1940′.

The Battle Honour is the privilege of ‘wearing’ a defaced Red Ensign, the defacement being the crossed axes of St Helier upon an Admiralty pattern anchor.

At the same time, the club altered its burgee by adding the St Helier crossed axes on a blue shield. The new colours were hoisted at a ceremony at the new clubhouse on Saturday 27 September 1952 by Sir Edward Grasett in the presence of W S Le Masurier, who had by then retired as Commodore but who had been duly honoured by being elected the club’s first honorary Commodore.

It was unfortunate that Captain Howard-Johnson was unable to attend the ceremony.

It is worth repeating Sir Edward’s words at the time: ‘The record of this achievement must by kept for posterity, for the younger generation must know of this, and the records of the deed must be carefully preserved.’

The club has held a number yachting rallies to St Malo to commemorate the events of 1940, and now every year two races take place, one for the Evacuation Trophy and one for the Howard-Johnson Salver, donated by the Captain.

Of the vessels which went St Malo in 1940, there is now only one in Jersey which is seaworthy, and it is hoped that Fiona will take part in the rally over the weekend.

We met up with Corinne Le Lerre, an English woman who offers tours of her adopted home. We strolled around the ramparts and she explained her passion for all things French and that explorers, buccaneers and pirates have all used the area as a base over the centuries.

st malo yacht club

The next stop on our itinerary was the Yacht Club Le Saint Malo, situated on the marina just outside the city walls.

David Thomas and Leray Martin who own the club’s restaurant, offered us a beer and an insight into their style of cooking.

We were invited to watch Leray prepare sashimi, as David explained the process his fellow chef was following. In between bites of the most delicious homemade pâté, I listened as David explained his food philosophy.

He is incredibly passionate about using local produce and everything the kitchen uses is certified organically – with some even grown in his own garden to ensure quality.

We washed it all down with a glass of organic wine then moved on to les Comptoirs de Saint Malo for even more decadent consumption.

st malo yacht club

The store sells homemade jams and delectable caramels infused with fruit flavours, but it also houses a secret wine cellar below the shop floor.

Benoit Auffray, one of the store’s founders, led us into the cellar to taste an array of French wines.

The white and red wines were all easy to drink and after loading up on caramels and biscuits from the shop, we hopped into a taxi back to our hotel and a lovely little restaurant for dinner.

The next day, we were booked on the boat, Chateaubriand, for a cruise along the Rance River, towards Dinan.

The idea was to sit back, relax and take in the beautiful landscape while enjoying a lavish four-course meal. Three hours passed by in a blur of scenery, gourmet food and wine.

St Malo in the Walls

Later, we grabbed a taxi back to St Malo, where everyone had the same idea for a sunny Sunday afternoon – wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere.

I decided to take advantage of the different retail options and put in a few solid hours of shopping, picking up a coat, scarf and handbag before catching the ferry back to Jersey.

The trip turned out to be busy but relaxing and a great little weekend getaway.

St Malo evacuation

Troops being evacuated in St Malo in June 1940. Although many were expected to be taken to Jersey, they were eventually all shipped direct to England

Operation Aerial

The decision to bring home the remainder of the British Expeditionary Force (Operation Aerial) was taken on 15 June. The ports of Cherbourg, St Malo, Brest, St Nazaire and La Pallice were to be used; the evacuations from the first two were to be directed by Admiral James from Portsmouth. It was hoped to embark transport, guns and equipment as well as the men.

Admiral James considered that he had far too few flotilla vessels to organise a convoy system. He therefore arranged for a continuous flow of troopships and other vesselos to sail between Southampton and Cherbourg or St Malo. The few available warships patrolled the shipping routes. In all some 30,630 men were brought home from Cherbourg and embarkation had also been proceeding at St Malo. By the evening of the 17th, 21,474 men had been

On the 16th the authorities in Jersey received a telegram from the Admiralty asking them to send all available craft to St Malo to help evacuate the remaining British troops.

The potato season was in full swing and there were several large craft in St Helier Harbour which were sent to St Malo along with a flotilla of smaller vessels organised by St Helier Yacht Club Commodore William Le Masurier.

As recorded in the Memoirs of Lord Coutanche, Jersey’s wartime Bailiff, the first convoy consisted of the larger ships Hodder , Ouse , Fairfield , Corral and Alt ; and the Duchess of Normandy , skippered by Frank Lawrence, a converted lifeboat (Bill Kent), Teaser (Sidney Perchard), St Clement (Ron Wagstaffe) and Klang II (Phil Le Marquand).

As the convoy was arriving in St Malo on Monday 17th, a task force of vessels reched St Helier, including a NAAFI canteen ready to cope with the needs of thousands of evacuated soldiers.

Second convoy

Meanwhile a second convoy was on its way to St Malo, comprising Clutha (Bill Glendewar), Mamie (Tommy King), Fiona (Bill Turner), Desiree (Bill Coom), Callou (James Langlois), Yvonne (Bill Mabey), Daddy (Charles King), Girl Joyce (Denny Mourant), Diana (Freddy Grenelle), Peirson (Reg Nicolle), Fleet Air Arm 113 (Bill Cox) and Lindolette (Jack Falle).

Saint Malo – Vauban

Update 21st august 2024.

Dear Boaters,

We hope that this letter finds you in good shape and that, despite the gloomy summer we have experienced this year, your boating activity has been enriching.

We would like to inform you that the works concerning the construction of the new harbourmaster’s office, the new toilets and the future restaurant will begin in mid-September. In order to properly prepare for this work, surveys must be carried out over the entire area  concerned.

The rest of the message was about no parking in the area during the works.

Facilities update July 2024

In 4 weeks there has been a big change. This pop-up bar has arrived together with another loo/shower facility. All looking quite smart.

The new Portacabin is good. The old one is tired but at least you have more choice. Apparently the pop up bar will disappear on Sept 1st 2024 and construction will re start.

We love the Vauban marina. Through the large lock gates, the marina is almost in the heart of Saint-Malo, located just outside of the walls. This does mean it is a busy and sometimes noisy marina but used to be well worth a visit.

The harbour staff are very helpful and speak very good English.

There are also very good toilets just inside the entrance (le Grand Port) by the Woodnik boat. These are open 10:30 to 12:30 and 2:30 to 8:00 (may change and was open for longer in May). You just leave a tip as you leave the facilities.

They are now based in a portacabin. Office on the right and facilities on the left. There are 2 coded doors.

The marina can get very busy in the summer, so even smaller boats may have to go alongside the wall and raft up. They do get large regattas as well, sometimes with over 100 boats. Do call them first.

The Saint Malo marinas have been split into 2 separate pages. The marinas are very different and worthy of a separate page.

The marina can also accommodate large boats along the wall. Do check though as I was told it is run by a separate company and they charge a lot more.

Turn left as you come through the lock gates and the marina is in front of you. Some very large boats may need to go along the wall. This is fine but ensure your boat is secure and be aware that the height of the marina does drop a little and so if you are not tied to a pontoon, you need some slack in your ropes

On the way out of the lock – the lights can be quite hard to see

They are planning to add an extension to the portacabin to provide more facilities.

The plan is to demolish the cafe/restaurant and build a new office and facilities, but that will not be completed until 2024.

Pilot Guide St Malo lock and lots of other information, wind speed, Vauban lock, Rance lock  nautisme.lefigaro.fr/bloc-marine/fiche-p……

The lock operates as follows and is based on Saint-Malo HW. The time listed for Entry is the time the lock gate opens to the sea. It‘s better to arrive 15mins before.

Normally the lock opens at the time stated and lets the boats in the lock, leave. It then lets you in. After about 10 mins the lock closes and the water height is adjusted. At the set time for the next opening, they open the gates and let you out, so you will normally be in there for half an hour.

The people on the wall of the lock now throw down a line with a ball on the end. You need to do a simple knot and connect it to your rope so you can pass the rope up. Make sure it has a big loop ready so they can put it over the bollard.

When the exit gate opens, you can just leave, there are no lights.

The times published for the opening of the gate are interesting. From the outiside, the outer gate closed at the published time so do get there at least 10 mins before.

You will then wait in the lock for up to 30mins as they want to close the road on the marina side for as short a time as possible. So they open that lock gate around the published time for leaving the marina.

  • 2.5 hours before HW
  • 1.5 hours before HW
  • 0.5 hours before HW
  • 0.5 hours after HW
  • 1.5 hours after HW
  • 2 hours before HW
  • 1 hour before HW
  • 1 hour after HW
  • 2 hours after HW

The above is based on my calculation based on the lock times in 2015. Please check with the Harbourmaster or other sources of information if the timing is critical for you.
