Super Bowl LVIII: the superyachts built for NFL team owners

Related articles, superyacht directory.

What do NFL owners do during the offseason? Go cruising on their superyachts, of course. There's an exclusive (but growing) club of NFL team owners who together have commissioned some of the largest superyachts in the world .

As the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs prepare to go head-to-head in this weekend's Super Bowl LVIII, BOAT takes a closer look at the yachts associated with the biggest names in American sport...

Joe Lewis • Tottenham Hotspur

British businessman Joe Lewis is the majority owner of Premier League football team Tottenham Hotspur and counts the 98.4-metre Abeking & Rasmussen superyacht Aviva among his possessions. When delivered in 2017, Aviva was the third yacht of its name to be owned by Lewis – including a 62-metre Feadship and a 68-metre , also built at Abeking & Rasmussen. The superyacht's standout feature is her huge padel tennis court, measuring 20-metres long by 10 metres wide. She also has an owner’s wardrobe that designer Andrew Langton claimed was "bigger than my house in France".

Arthur Blank • Atlanta Falcons

Owner of the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Blank, made his fortune as co-founder of American hardware store The Home Depot. Blank is supposedly one of the more recent additions to the elite club of sporting superyacht owners, taking delivery of a 90-metre Oceanco named DreAMBoat in 2019. The boat began construction on speculation and is one of the largest projects to ever be started before securing an owner. It was a risk that paid off for the Dutch shipyard – soon enough, the Espen Øino -penned superyacht was rumoured to have been snapped up by Blank just 18 months before she was due to be completed.

Whisper (ex Kismet)

Shahid kahn • jacksonville jaguars.

In 2014, serial superyacht and sports club owner Shahid Khan took delivery of his biggest boat to date. The 95.2-metre Lürssen is a hit with yacht-spotters around the world thanks to her "champagne and caviar" exterior (a golden hull and jet-black mast). Khan purchased the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012 and on game days, a four-metre silver statue of a jaguar graces Kismet 's bow, with its paw resting on a football helmet. Other highlights include lavish, art-deco interiors, a basketball court on the bow and a dedicated onboard hairdresser.

Kismet was sold and renamed Whisper in September 2023.

Daniel Snyder • Washington Commanders

Feadship's award-winning 93-metre Lady S was reportedly commissioned by Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Commanders, and is one of the world’s most expensive yachts available to charter . A week on board might set you back over €1.4 million – but it's easy to see why. After all, at the heart of the yacht is a 12-seat, two-deck IMAX cinema, while a fully certified helipad allows VIP guests to come and go as they please. Fitting an owner at the heart of American sport, Lady S is also equipped with a number of sports facilities for golf, basketball, volleyball and football.

Bravo Eugenia

Jerry jones • dallas cowboys.

Jerry Jones, owner and manager of the Dallas Cowboys, is said to be behind the build of Oceanco ’s 109-metre Bravo Eugenia . Built under the project name Bravo and delivered in 2018, Bravo Eugenia was applauded by the industry for her slender figure and elongated bow, courtesy of Nuvolari Lenard . Onboard highlights include a duo of helipads and a hybrid propulsion system. To the delight of yachting fans all over the world, Bravo Eugenia is a city dweller and is often spotted pulling into major cities around the world including Seattle, Miami and Cannes. She was most recently sighted in Tower Bridge, London .

Paul Allen • Seattle Seahawks

The 126-metre Lürssen explorer yacht Octopus was famously commissioned by the late Paul Allen, founder of co-Microsoft and owner of the Seattle Seahawks football team. Highlights include a swimming pool with a floor that raises to transform into a dancefloor , a floodable tender garage and a heli-hangar large enough to carry two helicopters side by side. Octopus is now under new ownership after she sold in 2021 but was previously owned by Allen's widower Jody, who still remains chairman of the Seattle Seahawks.

Winning Drive

Steve bisciotti • baltimore ravens.

Westport motor yacht Winning Drive is rumoured to have been built for American businessman and majority owner of the Baltimore Ravens football team Steve Bisciotti. The 39.6-metre vessel was delivered in 2012 as a Westport 130 and still cruises under the same name today. Unsurprisingly, she can often be spotted cruising between Baltimore and Palm Beach, according to BOATPro .

Ann Walton and Stan Kroenke • Los Angeles Rams

Ann Walton, heiress to the Walmart fortune, owns the Los Angeles Rams football team with her husband Stan Kroenke. Together the pair reportedly purchased the 85.6-metre Derektor flagship Cakewalk and renamed her Aquila , which underwent an extensive refit at British shipyard Pendennis .

Top Five II

Terry pagula • buffalo bills.

Top Five was delivered by Dutch shipyard Royal Hakvoort in 2021. She is reportedly owned by American businessman Terry Pagula, who also owns the Buffalo Bills NFL team with this wife. The 61-metre motor yacht is described as an “ocean-going explorer” with an ice belt, built to a design by Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design with naval architecture courtesy of Diana Yacht Design . One of the highlights of Top Five 's interior is her 2.4-metre-high ceilings.

stephen bisciotti yacht

Education: Salisbury State University

How He Acquired the Franchise: In 2000, Bisciotti bought a minority interest (49% of the team) from Art Modell for about $300 million. Then, on April 9, 2004, Bisciotti completed the purchase for $600 million to become the second-youngest majority owner in the NFL (Washington’s Dan Snyder is the youngest). According to the Ravens, his initial investment in the team provided the funds needed to secure free agents for the 2000 Super Bowl XXXV championship team.

Net Worth:  $4.4 billion ( per Forbes in 2018 )

Franchise Valuation:  $2.5 billion ( per Forbes in 2017 )

How He Made His Money: At age 23, Bisciotti started Aerotek, an aerospace staffing company, with his cousin Jim Davis. Operating out of a basement, Aerotek made $1.5 million in its first year and grew into Allegis Group, the “largest privately held staffing firm in the world” which brings in $11 billion in revenue annually.

In the Owner’s Words: “I’m O.K. if I’m one of the least-known owners in sports,” Bisciotti was quoted as saying in the Ravens’ biography of him, per The New York Times .

Political Donations: Dating back to 2000, Bisciotti has made several contributions of $5,000 to the Gridiron PAC. His two largest donations were both for $10,000, to the Republican National Committee in ’00 and to the Maryland Republican State Central Committee in ’06. In ’12, Bisciotti also gave two separate donations totaling $5,000 to Democrat Thomas Carper for his “Carper for Senate” campaign.

The Ferretti Group, one of the world top companies specializing in the design, building and sale of motor yachts, with an amazing portfolio of eight of the most exclusive and prominent brands, is thrilled to announce its participation in the Moscow Boat Show 2013. From 12 to 17 March, two of the Group fleet’s most successful yachts will be presented as absolute premieres for the Russian market: motor yacht Ferretti 530, representing Ferretti Yachts , and the 27-foot Iseo superyacht tender by Riva .

Ferretti 530 Yacht to make her Russian premiere at Moscow Boat Show

This year’s Moscow Boat Show will also offer the Ferretti Group the opportunity to announce all yachting enthusiasts in Russia and Northern Eurasia a new important achievement in its international growth: the renewal of its exclusive dealership agreement for the Russian Federation with its partner Premium Yachts , one of the leading dealers operating in the boating sector in Russia , which will represent the Ferretti Yachts , Pershing , Itama , Bertram , Riva e Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line brands.

The agreement – which was officially announced today during a press conference attended, among others, by Ferruccio Rossi (Ferretti Group’s CEO), Alexey Kurochkin (Premium Yachts’s President), and Stefano Campanelli (Sales Manager for the EMEA area for Ferretti Yachts, Pershing, Itama, Bertram, Riva, Mochi Craft and Ferretti Custom Line) – is part of Ferretti Group’s strategy for a further expansion on the European markets offering the best short/medium-term growth perspectives, also thanks to the financial soundness regained following the strategic partnership forged with the Weichai Group.

More specifically, the Russian boating market holds a great potential for the Ferretti Group’s development because of the rapid growth of average wealth among the population and an increasing interest for Made in Italy luxury goods, like Ferretti Group yachts.

Through the renewal of the agreement with Premium Yachts, the Group will further strengthen its highly selected distribution network – which currently includes approximately 60 dealers ensuring the best possible customer care in more than 80 countries worldwide – as well as its presence in the traditional EMEA ( Europe , Middle East , Africa ) area, one of the three macro-regions (besides the America and the Asia-Pacific) into which the Group’s sales structure is divided.

Moreover, in a medium/long-term perspective, the Ferretti Group is expecting an increasing interest on the Russian market not only for flying bridge yachts above 70’ in length, but also towards smaller crafts, both flybridge and open/coupé ones, which are particularly suitable for river cruising or pleasure boating in Russia’s large lakes. Consequently, the renewal of the dealership agreement with Premium Yachts also allows to look ahead at the future aiming to conquer new market segments where less competitors are currently present in terms of both products and geographic location.

The press conference, which was held today at the Lotte Hotel in Moscow, had also the objective of introducing attending journalists and yachting enthusiasts to the main new products launched by the Ferretti Group over the last few months, namely: motor yacht Ferretti 870 , Ferretti 690 yacht , and the project of the new flagship Ferretti 960 superyacht for the Ferretti Yachts brand; luxury yacht Pershing 82 ’ and superyacht Pershing 108’ New Edition for Pershing; Riva 63’ Virtus and the project of the new Riva flagship, 122’ Mythos yacht , as well as the entire range of the Itama, Bertram and Mochi Craft brands.

The yachts launched over the last few months by CRN – the Group’s brand specialising in the construction of steel and aluminium yachts between 40 and 90 metres – were also presented during the conference: the two superyachts: CRN superyacht Jade (60 metres long) and CRN mega yacht Chopi Chopi (80 metres long), the latter being one of the largest pleasure vessels ever built in Italy and the largest one ever built by the Ancona-based shipyard.

“The renewal of our dealership agreement with an important partner like Premium Yachts – which has worked on the Russian market for almost 10 years and can boast an outstanding product knowledge and an excellent local market penetration – and the presentation of the Group’s latest models are an integral part of our development strategy on the EMEA markets offering the best growth perspectives in the short-medium term,” stated Ferruccio Rossi, Ferretti Group’s CEO. “The Moscow Boat Show 2013, which has now reached its sixth edition, will extend over approximately 45,000 square metres this year and will be attended by more than 350 international boating companies. This Show represents an interesting business opportunity for us and an unmissable event in terms of visibility, since we are identifying a considerable growth potential in this area thanks to the timeless attractiveness of our products – true ambassadors of Made in Italy production all over the world”.

Only Steve Bisciotti and Jim Davis from Baltimore make Forbes 400 list of richest Americans

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, shown in this 2018 file photo, was ranked 150th on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans. Bisciotti founded the Allegis Group staffing firm with cousin Jim Davis, who ranked 287th.

Steve Bisciotti, best known as the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, and his cousin, Jim Davis, founded a staffing firm then known as Aerotek but now called the Allegis Group.

Allegis has become the nation’s largest staffing firm, with $13.4 billion revenue in 2018.

Bisciotti, who resides in Millersville, is ranked 150th on the Forbes list with an estimated net worth of $4.5 billion, which includes $2.75 billion attributed to the Ravens.

Davis, who lives in Cockeysville, is ranked 287th with an estimated net worth of $3 billion.

The cousins’ Redwood Capital Investments is an active investor with significant stakes in Tradepoint Atlantic, the redevelopment project at the site of the closed Sparrows Point steel mill; Erickson Living, a Catonsville-based retirement community operator; as well as auto and RV dealers, alcohol distribution, trailer leasing and propane distribution.

Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour, made the Forbes 400 cover in 2015 , but dropped off the list in 2017 as the Baltimore-based athletic apparel brand suffered a slump in sales and its stock price. Forbes currently estimates Plank’s net worth at $1.8 billion, a few hundred million shy of the bottom of the Forbes 400 list.

The richest Marylander is listed as Ted Lerner and his family, whose Lerner Enterprises owns significant real estate in the Washington, D.C., area. The Chevy Chase resident, who also owns the Washington Nationals, has an estimated net worth of $5.1 billion, ranked 128th.

Other Marylanders on the list include Mitchell Rales of Potomac with $4.4 billion, 154th; Bernard Saul II of Chevy Chase with $3.4 billion, 250th; David Rubinstein of Bethesda with $3.2 billion, 275th; and Dan Snyder of Potomac, best known as the owner of the Washington Redskins, with $2.6 billion, 333rd.

For the second year in a row, Forbes included a philanthropy score, ranking the billionaire’s known generosity on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the most philanthropic.

Davis received a philanthropy score of 4, while Bisciotti — the Baltimore region’s richest person — only got a 1.

The philanthropy scoring has been criticized as biased toward those who makes their gifts widely known; some billionaires decline to share information with Forbes.

The richest Americans overall were Amazon’s Jeff Bezos with $114 billion, Microsoft’s Bill Gates with $106 billion, Warren Buffett with $80.8 billion and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg with $69.6 billion. Gates, Buffett and Zuckerberg all received philanthropy scores of 5, while Bezos received a 2.

Superyacht sinking: The missing tourists rescuers are looking for

S earch efforts resumed Tuesday for six people who went missing off the coast of Sicily when the luxury superyacht they were travelling in sank in the early hours of the morning Monday.

Divers in wetsuits and oxygen tanks returned to the site off Porticello, near Palermo, to tag-team in 12-minute underwater search shifts where the luxury sailboat, which was carrying 22 people, went down. Fire rescue crews reported that divers only made it to the bridge during a first search, and were unable to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm that toppled the vessel.

Fifteen people aboard the boat, named the Bayesian , were rescued, including a mother who reported swimming to safety while holding her one-year-old baby above the waves.

Ten crew members and 12 tourists were onboard when the boat sank.

One body has been recovered from the scene, The Associated Press reports, and the Italian coast guard confirmed to NBC News that it was the ship's chef who died . Global Affairs Canada told Global News that it is aware of reports that a Canadian citizen had died, but did not confirm the news and said that due to privacy considerations no further information would be disclosed.

Video: At least 1 dead, 6 missing after storm sinks luxury yacht off Sicily

Global News also reached out to the Embassy of Canada in Rome and the Embassy of Italy in Ottawa for more information about the incident and the missing Canadian, but has not received confirmation as of press time.

However, the six missing passengers have been revealed.

Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah

Mike Lynch, 59, is one of the U.K.'s best-known tech entrepreneurs and was sailing on the Bayesian with his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. Reuters reports that Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, owns the Bayesian and was one of the 15 passengers rescued.

Lynch built the country's largest software firm, Autonomy, and was referred to as "Britain's Bill Gates."

He sold the firm to Hewlett-Packard for US$11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unravelled, with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial. Lynch was eventually acquitted by a jury in San Francisco in June.

In an extraordinary coincidence, Stephen Chamberlain, Lynch's co-defendant in the trial, died following a road accident in Britain over the weekend, his lawyer said on Monday.

The other missing passengers on the superyacht were Lynch's colleagues and their wives.

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy are also among the unaccounted for, confirmed Salvatore Cocina, head of the Italian island’s Civil Protection agency.

Bloomer is also the chairman of London-listed insurer Hiscox , whose CEO said in a statement Tuesday that the company was "deeply shocked and saddened" by the "tragic news."

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation,” Aki Hussain wrote.

Reuters reports that Bloomer appeared as a character witness on Lynch's behalf during his lengthy trial. Lynch appointed Bloomer to Autonomy’s board of directors in 2010, where he served as chairman of the audit committee at the time of the HP deal.

Judy Bloomer was described as “a brilliant champion for women’s health and medical research” by The Eve Appeal, a British cancer charity, in an emailed statement to NBC News.

Chris and Neda Morvillo

Chris Morvillo, an American lawyer at Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda are also missing. Morvillo was involved in successfully defending the case against Lynch.

A spokesperson for the law firm told CNN that employees at Clifford Chance were " in shock and deeply saddened ."

“Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing. Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident,” the spokesperson added.

A harrowing scene

The Bayesian, a 56-metre British-flagged vessel, had been moored about a half-mile off Ponticello when a storm rolled in around 4 a.m. Monday. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, which had passed through the area.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius, which is almost three degrees more than normal,” Luca Mercalli, Italian climatologist and president of the country’s meteorological society, told Reuters.

“This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

Among the survivors was Charlotte Golunski, who said she momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by local outlet ANSA as James, also survived.

“I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves. I held her tight, close to me, while the sea was stormy,” she said. “Many were screaming. Luckily, the lifeboat inflated, and 11 of us managed to get on it.”

The doctor treating the survivors told the BBC that his patients said the ship " capsized within a few minutes ."

"They told me they found themselves in an incredible condition, let's say of physical and psychological upheaval of their lives, and that the boat capsized within a few minutes," Dr. Domenico Cipolla said.

Karsten Borner, the captain of a nearby ship that helped rescue the survivors, told reporters that there was a “strong hurricane gust, and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position,” according to Reuters.

He added that they had “watched the ship behind us not to touch them and we managed to keep the ship in position.” After the storm was over, he said, “we noticed that the ship behind us was gone .”

“Fifteen people inside. Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship," he said. “Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people.”

The search effort

Because the Bayesian is resting at a depth of 50 metres underwater, divers can only stay in 12-minute shifts.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialized cave divers, were working Tuesday to open up other access points to get inside the wreckage. Rescue crews said they assume the six passengers will be found in the below-deck cabins, given the time of the shipwreck, but that they have not managed to verify their presence there through portholes.

The statement referred to the six as “missing.” Fire rescue officials have said the six will be considered missing until they are located in the wreckage.

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters, return to Porticello on a small boat, on August 20, 2024 near Palermo a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including UK tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, missing since their yacht capsized off the Italian island of Sicily. The Bayesian, which had 22 people aboard including 10 crew, was anchored some 700 metres from port before dawn when it was struck by a waterspout, a sort of mini tornado.

Mike Lynch death: Tributes flow for Autonomy cofounder and ‘creator of dreams’

Mike Lynch

It has now been confirmed that Mike Lynch, one of the most prominent and controversial figures in the U.K. tech scene, died in the sinking of his superyacht off Sicily on Monday. At least five others also died when the vessel capsized in a violent storm; Lynch’s teenage daughter Hannah remains missing.

I encourage you to read my colleague Ryan Hogg’s obituary of Lynch , who I was writing about just a couple weeks ago in the context of his legal travails. Following a lengthy extradition drama, Lynch, 59, was acquitted in June of criminal fraud charges relating to the sale of his data software firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. Indeed, his fateful trip with family, friends and lawyers was reportedly a celebration of that victory.

Morgan Stanley International chair Jonathan Bloomer, who had chaired Autonomy’s audit committee during the HP sale, and who testified in Lynch’s defense, also died in the sinking of the Bayesian. In a grotesque coincidence, Lynch’s also-acquitted codefendant in the U.S. trial, former Autonomy finance VP Stephen Chamberlain, was fatally struck by a car while jogging in England on Saturday.

Although he was acquitted in the U.S., a U.K. civil case over Autonomy’s misrepresentation of its financials to HP resulted in a ruling that Lynch had known what was going on. As a result, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (which has been handling the case since it was spun out of HP in 2015) had been hoping to recoup billions of dollars from Lynch and former Autonomy CFO Sushovan Hussain, who received a five-year sentence in the U.S. over the affair.

“We’re saddened by this tragic event and our thoughts are with the families and friends of all those who lost their lives,” said an HPE spokesman, while declining to comment on the future of the legal proceedings.

Friends say Lynch had been at the “beginning of a new life” following his U.S. acquittal, and many tributes followed the confirmation of his passing.

“The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man,” said Autonomy cofounder David Tabizel.

“Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalyzed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the U.K.,” said John Browne, the former BP CEO and the chair of the Francis Crick Institute, a biomedical research center for which Lynch once helped to raise funds. “His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally. I send my condolences to those close to him. We have lost a human being of great ability.”

David Yelland, the former editor of The Sun and Lynch’s public relations advisor, said Lynch was “failed in life by his country and his peers when he needed them most—as he looked for help in the unjust U.S. demand that he be extradited—and he has then suffered the most unfair and brutal of fates.”

“I was in touch with Mike just before he sailed,” Yelland wrote on X . “He wasn’t a mere dreamer of dreams, he was a creator of dreams not just for himself but for all those that knew him, worked with him or invested with him.”

Lynch was a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the board of which said it was “deeply saddened” to hear of his death. A spokesperson from industry body TechUK told the Evening Standard that Lynch had been “a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the U.K. technology sector.”

More news below. And do read my colleague Eleanor Pringle’s piece on X’s true owners , whose identities have just been revealed in the context of a lawsuit by former employees. Bill Ackman is no surprise, but the same can’t be said for Diddy.

Walmart sells JD.com stake. Walmart has sold its entire $3.7 billion stake in the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com and says it will focus on its own Chinese operations now. As Reuters reports , the move may have something to do with how the ultra-competitive nature of Chinese e-commerce squeezes profit margins. Walmart has in recent years been pulling out of a few international markets where it can’t turn a decent profit.

Google targeting teens. Not long after the Financial Times reported that Google broke its own rules by letting Meta target teens with its YouTube ads, Adweek reports that this was no one-off. Citing three ad buyers, plus written documentation, the publication says Google’s salespeople have been advising ad buyers on how to reach teenagers despite the fact that Google doesn’t allow targeting that age group. The key, it seems, is to target the cohort of “unknown” users, about whom Google doesn’t know age or other details, as teens are probably included in the group. Google says it will remind its reps not to help agencies and advertisers skirt the company’s rules.
