Balboa Yacht Club
- Copy Link copied
One of Panama City’s oldest bars, the Balboa Yacht Club sits just before the Amador Causeway. It’s an institution in the community, and locals frequent here. Chill with a cerveza Balboa on the covered wooden terrace, and take in views of the Bridge of the Americas and the ocean. Try a surprising item on the menu—Texas chili.

Balboa Yacht Club
Play in the heart of downtown baltimore, marina info.
Located at the entrance of the Canal on the east side of the channel, is the Balboa Yacht Club in Balboa Harbor. They monitor VHF channel 6. Care must be taken to enter and turn right at buoy 14.5. Turning sooner will run you aground. The office phone is 507-228-5794. While there is no clubhouse, the Balboa Yacht Club is cruiser friendly. It can be rolly, but is a good place to transition when arranging for an advisor to board your boat for the transit of the Canal. It is also a safe place to leave your boat if you travel. They have railway haul out facilities, showers, and 24-hour water taxi service. Adjacent to the BYC is a hotel, The Country Inn, and a TGIF Friday’s restaurant.

Amador Causeway Panama
The 2 mile (3.5km) Amador Causeway Panama (Calzada de Amador) is a must see tourist attraction located at the southern entrance of the Panama Canal near Panama City that links the four small Causeway Islands .
Built by the United States Government in 1913, Amador Causeway Panama is unique in that it is the road that connects Panama City (the capital) with four small Pacific Ocean archipelago islands.
For those unfamiliar with this Central American landmark, the Panama Amador Causeway is both a roadway and a walking path between Panama City and these four small islands:
- Naso Island
- Culebra Island
- Perico Island
- Flamenco Island
Amador Causeway Panama is a beautiful and picturesque causeway that captures the attention of the locals as well as global visitors enjoying Panama vacations. The roads of Amador Causeway are lined with palm trees and feature magnificent views of the Panama Canal, plus Panama City’s skyline, the Bridge of Americas, and Panama Bay.
You’ll find many recreational things to enjoy plus many great vendors, restaurants, and even nightclubs.
Amador Causeway Construction
The Calzada de Amador was built in 1903, around the same time as the Panama Canal . As a result, the Amador Causeway construction benefited from the 1,250 million cubic yards of rock excavated from the Panama Canal’s Culebra Cut.
The original purpose of the causeway was to prevent sedimentation in the Port of Balboa , which, if left untouched, eventually would clog the southern (Pacific) entrance into the Panama Canal. The causeway was also designed as a breakwater to protect the canal entrance.
The United States investment in the development of Panama, and in particular the Panama Canal, put the Americans at a beneficial position; the United States controlled the Amador Causeway from 1915 until World War II. The United States used the area as a military base, and restricted the Panama Canal’s access to only American ships. During both World Wars, the U.S. Military used the Amador Causeway as a powerful defense system.
Only in September of 1996 did the Amador Causeway become the property of the country of Panama. At this point, Panamanians had complete access to the area.
Amador Causeway Things to Do
Since 1996, when the Panamanians took over ownership, the Amador Causeway area has been redeveloped to attract more locals as well as tourists. Vehicle traffic is restricted to one side of the causeway only, leaving lots of room for foot traffic to access the many vendors and attractions along the Causeway.
Many visitors who enjoy Panama vacations also enjoy a leisurely walk, jog, bike, skate, or roller-blade along the Amador Causeway, visiting all four islands. Others enjoy relaxing along the island beaches and taking swims in the warm Pacific Ocean waters. From the Causeway, anyone can watch Panama cruise ships come and go through the Panama Canal.
Panama’s Amador Causeway provides wonderful views of the Bridge of Americas , Balboa Yacht Club, and Panama Bay. Several projects near the Amador include a cruise port, a marina, the Fuerte Amador Shopping and Restaurant Plaza, plus the Fiagli Convention Centers. Numerous Panama hotels and resorts have popped up in the area as well.
Also worth mentioning is the Marine Exhibition Center of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), which lets visitors get a close-up look at creatures native to the country of Panama.
While passing through the Panama Canal, it is also worth it to take some time to explore the Miraflores Visitor and Museum .

Business Hours
The Balboa Yacht Club of some 125 members is founded on the near-universal appeal of fishing and faraway places and the feeling for skippering your own good boat to your choice of destinations. On the Isthmus of Panama, nearly surrounded with water and busy with seagoing business, it is not surprising the general fascination of boats has fostered several such organizations.
Home port for the Balboa Club extends from Navy Pier 2, reaching out toward the Panama Canal channel from Fort Amador, to the wartime mine dock just inside the anchorage for ships entering the Canal from the Pacific. There, in the Club's moorings on the east side of the channel, the members' 75-odd boats lie at anchor, using only about half of the waters assigned for their use by the Panama Canal Marine Bureau. Biggest of the boats that bob up and down as the big ships stir the waters in the channel is the Tondelayo , a 46-foot sailing ketch owned by a Navy employee, Walter E. (Wally) Pearson. The Tondelayo raced to first place in the Club's 1952 racing season and was flagship last year when her owner was the Club's Commodore.
WAIF IS FLAGSHIP
The flagship now is the Waif , a 16-foot sailing sloop owned by a Balboa High School instructor, Charles R. (Bob) Bowen, who is now Commodore. The former Navy officers' Club at Fort Amador has served as clubhouse for the Yacht Club since 1946, when it was transferred by the navy to the yacht Club and the Pacific Sailfish Club. Now the building is occupied jointly with the American Legion, whose members fish off the Yacht Club pier and receive other small friendly considerations in return for which Yacht Club members use some American Legion facilities.
Smallest of the sailboats in the Yacht Club fleet are the centerboard sloops from about 18-25 feet long. The power boats start at about that size -- those with little inboard motors -- and go up to the cabin cruisers, topped in size among the Yacht Club boats by Kyle G. Bishop's 42-foot twin-screw cruiser, Martha .
In between, craft of many shapes and sizes add their individualities to the Yacht Club's boat collection. Big or little, trim or tub-like, one or more owners love them -- or at least look on them with mixed parental feelings for the cost, care and time they consume.
Although most Yacht Club boats usually stay close to home, the members get the feel of faraway places from yachts from all parts of the world that put into their hospitable pier. Some visitors like the place so well -- like Lee and Ann Gregg off the ketch Novia , and "Buzz" and June Champion of the ketch Little Bear all of whom came from San Diego -- that they come ashore and go to work and stay in the Canal Zone.
It sometimes works the other way. Yacht Club members catch the fever of faraway places and take their own boats or join the crew of a visiting yacht bound for a far-off atoll in the Pacific. For instance, Mr. and Mrs. John W, Litton and their small daughter left recently in the ketch Calypso for the Society Islands to visit the Kin Powells (Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Litton are sisters), former Yacht Club members who now make their home in Tahiti.
LISTED IN LLOYD'S REGISTER
The Balboa yacht Club enjoys full recognition by other such clubs throughout the world and is listed in Lloyd's. It is also a member of the North American Yacht Racing Union, and the International Game Fishing Association.
Among the visitors who use the club's facilities on a reciprocal basis are members of the Panama Canal Yacht Club of Cristobal and the Pedro Miguel and Gamboa Boat clubs, who visit most often during the red snapper and corbina season when they come to try their luck in Panama Bay. Fishing members of the Balboa Yacht Club receive timely tips in a bulletin issued monthly by the Club's Fishing Committee, whose chairman is Sam R. Moody. For instance, this month the committee advises that sailfish and marlin come into the inner bay in August and that marlin are best baited with whole bonita.
When the dry season winds blow strong and steady, the Racing Committee goes into action, scheduling races and cruising picnics (luaus) and an annual treasure hunt on Taboga or Taboguilla Island. Bill Clark is Chairman of the Sail Yacht Racing Committee.
WINNERS OF SAIL RACES
In the last racing season, the Tondelayo placed first; Bill Blark's Kelpie , second; Lee Gregg's Novia , third; and Bill Wymer's Kon Hiro, fourth.
The Balboa Yacht Club burgee has flown in several ocean races off the United States' coasts. Tucker McClure's ketch Chiriqui , with his local manager, George Bobbitt aboard, last year won the Class "B" trophy, and was second on corrected time for the Time Prize in the Los Angeles-Honolulu Yacht Race.
Ed McIntosh's Starcrest has also competed in winter races around Florida, the most notable being the St. Petersburg-Havana Ocean Race in 1950, in which Starcrest placed third in Class "C".
The Balboa Yacht Club was organized in 1946 from the remaining interested members of the former Balboa Boat Club, which operated before the war from the present home base of the Yacht Club and the Panama Bay Yacht Club, which operated in Panama during the war.
welcome aboard

Some will be able to relax and sunbathe on one of the decks, some will prefer to read a book, while others will be able to enjoy the music on board while having one of our cocktails. Later, we will raise our anchors to start our return trip to the city where we will be arriving by sunset. On board, we will have, for an extra cost, different options of food, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks .
The Taboga Pirate Experience trip is fun and exciting for all types of passengers. We will have music and dancing on the main deck for those who are in the mood for a party atmosphere. But the pirate ship is big, the music will never be overpowering, and families and older people will have plenty of pirate-themed fun and water activities to keep everyone happy and entertained.

Where to Dock Your Boat: Panama’s Best Marinas
Before settling in David in western Panama in 2009, I lived aboard my sailboat, Carina, for 16 years. My husband and I sailed the western Caribbean and we still have many friends among the cruising community. Although Panama has miles of coastline, it has few marine facilities for small boats. If you’re looking for a safe harbor to dock your boat in Panama, here are the stand-out marinas to visit.
Bocas del Toro, Caribbean Coast, Northwestern Panama
Bocas marina.
Conveniently located across from Bocas Town, Bocas Marina has room at its floating docks for up to 100 boats, with a maximum length of 120 feet. This popular cruiser’s destination combines an awesome tropical setting with ease of access and reputable service into a complete package. Each slip has metered electric service and free water, and boaters have use of a bath house. The dockside restaurant and bar host occasional special events (I’ve heard the Halloween party is a hoot!). Laundry and Internet services are also available.
Bocas Marina offers on-site boat repairs and basic maintenance and has a diesel fuel dock. More specialized yacht services can be arranged through the marina with local craftsmen. For haul-outs they refer boaters to a recently-built boatyard at Almirante, on the mainland, called Bocas Yacht Services . For those interested in buying or selling a boat they also have a brokerage with sail and power boat listings.
The advantage of docking at Bocas Marina is its proximity to town, so provisioning is a bit easier and you can enjoy the Bocas Town nightlife. Check here for more details.
Red Frog Marina
Located on Isla Bastimentos, Red Frog Marina is part of the larger Red Frog Beach Island Resort and Spa. This is a multi-use property with private residential villas, two restaurants, a full-service spa, a hostel and a range of leisure activities on site. One of its nicest features is a picture-perfect crescent of white-sand beach that you don’t want to miss. It is reachable only by water and the marina provides regular water taxi service to Bocas Town for its guests.
The marina has over 70 slips on floating docks that can accommodate boats of all sizes. Approach to the marina is along the south shore of Isla Bastimentos with depths of 16 to 30 feet. In addition to short-term slip rentals, they offer a number of slips for purchase. Electricity and water are metered at each slip, and boaters are welcome to use the bath house and laundry room. While they don’t have a boatyard or haul-out facilities, they do offer a wide range of repair work, installation and trouble-shooting of all the main boat systems.
Red Frog Marina is a good choice for nature-lovers and those who prefer the peace and quiet of being away from town.
Colon, Caribbean Coast, North Central Panama
Shelter bay marina.
At the northern entrance to the Panama Canal you’ll find the Shelter Bay Marina complex. This full service marina and boat yard has it all. The property is located at Fort Sherman, a former U.S. military installation now in disuse. It is on the western side of the Gatun Locks and several miles outside of the city of Colon, so by road it’s a bit out of the way. The marina does offer shuttle van service into Colon for shopping and other needs, and taxis can be arranged as well.
The marina location is gorgeous, surrounded by lush jungle and tropical flora and fauna. It is very well protected, being inside the canal breakwater and completely enclosed, so forget about wind, waves and wakes! This large marina has over 200 boat slips and can accommodate all sizes. They have all the dockside services we have come to expect. Shore-side the amenities are extensive, including a hotel, restaurant, chandlery, swimming pool, exercise room, and a well-stocked store that offers a variety of personalized services.
Adjacent to the marina is the boatyard with complete haul-out facilities, fuel delivery, work area, and boat care available. Shelter Bay Marina is the only full service facility at the north end of the canal. If you plan to transit the canal this is an excellent place to prepare for and await your trip. If you don’t plan a canal transit, it’s a great place for a stopover or to complete your boat projects.
You’ll find details about Shelter Bay and all their rates here.
Panama City, Pacific Coast, Central Panama
Flamenco yacht club and marina.
Whether you are doing serious provisioning, completing a canal transit, or just want to hang out near the big city lights, Flamenco Yacht Club and Marina is the place to dock in Panama City . In fact, it’s the only full service marina in the city that caters to small boats.
Flamenco Marina is positioned at the end of the Amador Causeway, snug between Isla Perico and Isla Flamenco, with a clear approach and two long breakwaters. They have 191 slips, all with water and electric service, for boats up to 250 feet. Amenities include a restaurant and bar, showers, laundry, Internet, store and game room, as well as a fuel dock with gasoline and diesel. Alongside the docks you’ll find a large haul-out and storage yard with a travel lift, where they offer a range of maintenance and repair services.
The slip rates at Flamenco Marina are higher than other locations, probably due to the lack of competition. Still it’s an awesome location and perfect for exploring Panama City. You can find more details here .
