Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. S&S design #2462. Keel-centerboard and fixed keel shoal draft versions were available. Draft fro Kell/CB version: Board down - 9.33’/2.84m Board up - 5.00’/1.52m Disp.: 17577 lbs./7973 kgs. It is thought that only 12 were built under this name. Later boats were sold as the DUFOUR 42.

Dufour LaCoste 42

I am looking at a Dufour 42 LaCoste. Information (they only made 12 or 14) is rather lacking. Has anyone here actually sailed on one of these? Any info is appreciated.  

I looked at Pryde in MA, back in August, but I only went aboard her, I didn't sail her. The only online information I was able to find on the boat was an entry for her on the S&S website, and an article about her, on the 1001 Boats blog. If you read the comments on the S&S webpage, there are some owners who post their email address, which you may want to try contacting. Good Luck.. I sailed the boat. It is fun and fast upwind. Deep draft. Could be a problem anywhere on east coast. Somewhat plasticy in appearance as most modern boats. Overall boat looked and felt good, no signs of structural aging.  

Not sure why the draft would be a problem anywhere on the east coast. Here in Rhode Island, for example, the water is deep. Maybe you mean down south.  

Thanks so much for the answers. In reference to the first gentleman, I contacted two of the owners on S&S site. i have talked to one, and am awaiting the other. The specific one I am looking at actually has a centerboard. It is about 5 board up, and 8 board down draft. My last lady was a Tayana 42 center cockpit. A divorce led her away from me. I am remarried, kids grown, and looking to be on the water again.

Are you aware of the Le Coste named Necessity? I am trying to get more information on this boat but the broker seems bound by some false sense of protocall. The images I have been able to locate of the layout are too small for adequate study. Also the listing lacks good photos of the head, shower, galley, v-berth and aft-berth. OMG I just spoke to that guy... what a tool... I don't think I would want to buy a boat from him. I said, can I come see it this weekend and he said, "I'll be away all weekend and not available until Wednesday" he also said the owner will be heading out in the boat by the following Monday, probably by the 4th or 5th. So I told him I could only come down on a Monday or Tuesday evening and he starts talking about his kid's karate and what not. I said, "well my wife and I are available together on a Monday or a Tuesday so, that being said, maybe you can figure out a time for us to come." He says, "what you mean? lets figure it out now." I said "well you just said your not available until next Wednesday and the owner is taking off by the following Monday." he says, "thats not true, I'm available now until Thursday." I'm like "well, we can't come tonight and my wife isn't available Wednesday or Thursday so I guess we can't make it." He says, "the boat's been sitting here for 6 months..." I said "okay well, nice talking to you, bye..." I'll tell you what, I wouldn't want this jerk selling my boat! I mean you can't have someone else show the boat? maybe call the owner and see they might want to show the boat...? I dunno, maybe they don't really want to sell it...

Lacoste sailboats, anyone with info?

I'm looking into buying a Lacoste 42 sailboat. They were commissioned by the Lacoste company, designed by Sparkmann & Stephens and built by Yachting France in the mid-80's. Anyone know of them? Nagging question: we're they built with a hull to deck joint/toe rail held with rivets or bolt/nut combination? I had a look and almost certain it's held togother with rivets. Now, question would be is the use of rivets a plus or a minus fir the hull/deck joint? Danny

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry's wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.
