Riviera announces new 50 sports motor yacht.

Gold Coast, Australia – Premium Australian luxury motor yacht manufacturer Riviera has unveiled plans for the new 50 Sports Motor Yacht (SMY) that redefines the form, function and feel of the quintessential blue-water yacht.

The Riviera design team in collaboration with 4D Designs have created the 50 SMY , a remarkably spacious new yacht and brimming with unique features. This sophisticated new design draws on the heritage of Riviera’s larger and very successful 64, 68 and 72 Sports Motor Yacht models.

Among the key sports motor yacht design elements are a foredeck that transforms from tender storage to sunlounge, a sports cockpit, an all-weather mezzanine seating area that affords alfresco dining and entertainment, a stately three-sided glass-enclosed flybridge, and a full-beam master stateroom as centrepiece of a three-stateroom, twin-bathroom accommodation plan – all in a hull measuring 15.4 metres in length.

“Our sports motor yacht design is in a league of its own, as they bring many different yacht designs together for the first time in one yacht. A Riviera SMY has the attributes of a passage maker, pilothouse, motor yacht, and convertible sports fish, all in one.

“The new 50 SMY has considerable internal volume for its size, with multiple living areas and a tremendous amount of practicality and versatility,” Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst says of the 50 SMY.

“She’ll comfortably handle long coastal passages, while being equally adept at serving as a luxurious family, fishing and entertainment yacht with highly efficient planing performance – perfect for day boating and weekending.”

Sydney Australia couple Darrel and Linda Hall were quick to pre-order a new 50 SMY ahead of its formal announcement, one of many purchasers to do so off the plan. She will be their fifth Riviera in the past 10 years.

“We wanted to go to an enclosed flybridge,” Darrel explains. “We go boating with our kids, who are both 19. They bring along friends, so the extra living space you get with an enclosed flybridge is a real bonus – it’s a place to escape to so easily with an internal staircase, and you have the ability to be higher and to see further ahead at sea.”

A new breed of motor yacht

The exterior of the 50 SMY is all about the harmonious marriage of the handsomely sweeping superstructure – unmistakably Riviera in its profile – with the sporty, large-volume hull form. She makes a grand statement of both grace and purpose.

The 50 draws inspiration and innovation from the popular SMY Collection with its 64, 68 and 72 models – most notably in the cockpit, mezzanine and foredeck configurations that consequently look right at home in the 50 SMY.

Accessed from a generous hydraulic swim platform (optional) via dual transom doors, the rear cockpit boasts 6.5 square metres of outdoor living space and accommodates a barbecue/wet bar and fridge/freezer compartment, along with ample storage.

Wide side-decks with raised bulwarks safely connect the foredeck, which in turn offers both an entertainment sun lounging zone and can convert to carry a tender. A lateral walkway negates having to step over the sunlounge when washing the windscreen or attaching covers.

The bowsprit is seamlessly merged into the flared hull design for a cleaner, contemporary look.

In the fully covered mezzanine are two comfortable day lounges either side – the starboard lounge can also convert to a sunbed. There is simply no better place to relax, enjoy a meal or take in all the cockpit action.

Convenient access to the engine room is via a large hatch in the mezzanine floor with a stainless-steel ladder beneath.

The inside story

Linking the mezzanine with the galley and saloon are a tinted glass sliding door and awning window set in a superior stainless-steel frame. A gourmet galley resides immediately to port, while the internal staircase is to starboard, incorporating a television, 100-litre freezer, liquor cabinet and glass storage.

As one of five distinct yet integrated luxury living zones, the saloon also offers two opposing lounge areas that can seat six to eight guests in total comfort.

Linda Hall says this arrangement was a major drawcard: “The social areas of the new 50 SMY look beautiful,” she says. “There’s the cockpit, mezzanine, the almost circular seating arrangement of the lounges in the saloon, the flybridge offering additional onboard space, and the generous downstairs accommodation.

“We basically raised our children on the water and this together time is very dear to us. The new 50 SMY will be just fantastic as our family boat.”

The design team has also excelled with the accommodation plan with a full-beam master suite bathed in natural light from large hull windows, a queen-sized island berth, chaise lounge and en suite. Guests are afforded a VIP stateroom with ensuite/day head forward and twin bunk cabin, all with exceptional headroom and airiness.

The flybridge pampers its occupants in complete comfort while being open to the extended awning – strata glass clears can then fully seal this area. An optional aft helm is available for convenience when fishing.

The main helm station offers twin pedestal-mounted leather seats and places controls, screens and switches close to hand and in clear view.

Power and passion

From here, the captain can summon the choice of either Volvo Penta IPS or MAN V-drive propulsion. The proven and highly efficient power and drive options are twin diesel Volvo Penta IPS 950 (533kW/725HP) or twin diesel MAN i6-800 (588kW/800HP). Both deliver smooth, strong-mid-range thrust and top speeds of over 30 knots.

“In line with our philosophy of always selecting the superior drive and engine configuration for each individual model, we decided to offer a choice of shaft drive or IPS, and in either case, the 50 Sports Motor Yacht will be a brilliant performer,” Rodney Longhurst explained.

The Halls opted for IPS, having owned two shaft-and two pod-drive models previously. Darrel and Linda cited the ease of handling, berthing and efficient performance.

“The plan is to do some coastal cruising, but our twins have just started university and they’re studying from home because of COVID. So for the time being, it will be a mid-week or weekends away,” Darrel says.

The fine finishing detail

Darrel and Linda both noted the evolution and refinement of Riviera’s design and finish quality over the past decade to its world-class standards of today, which gave them supreme confidence and faith when ordering their new 50 SMY.

“Darrel is a Riviera guy,” Linda adds. “When I look back, the quality of Riviera today is just magnificent. The boats are finished to the highest possible standards, and we’ve never been disappointed with any aspect of the boats we’ve owned. Certainly, the new 50 SMY is a whole new level.”

Linda and her daughter delighted in the opportunity to personalise the colour scheme of their new yacht: “There’s a lot of choice but as part of the interior consultation process, Riviera present you with a wonderful book with different stories about the fabric ranges and the colours. We kept the base colours fairly neutral so we could personalise the other furnishing details.”

Rodney Longhurst is just as enthusiastic and confident that the new 50 Sports Motor Yacht will be keenly sought after among discerning boaters either moving within the Riviera model range or coming to the Riviera family for the first time.

“This is a superb new motor yacht for those who want to spend quality time on the water pursuing their own water sports passions or enjoying complete peace and quiet in a secluded anchorage.

“Seaworthiness and safety are deep in her DNA and, as with every Riviera today, she will be built with the highest of principles and quality.

“I really look forward to seeing the 50 accompanying her distinguished Sports Motor Yacht sisterships in venturing far and wide, or simply spending quiet afternoons closer to home,” said Rodney Longhurst.

The Viking 50 Convertible launched in 2009 is a showcase of smart design. The hull form has been refined and features a flatter 12-degree deadrise that is about 3 degrees less than previous models (such as the 50 Convertible of 2001), giving it more lift. The hull’s shape is more convex in midships and aft sections for a softer, dryer ride in head seas. The 17 ft beam widened the engine room space which is well arranged and superbly functional for quick easy access to engines, machinery, batteries housed in fiberglass boxes, and systems. Engines are secured to beds of steel beams set on intermediate bulkheads to ensure alignment and minimize vibration.

DESCRIPTION

The 50 Convertible’s “sportscar” handling is a combination of power-assisted steering, high-speed stainless-steel rudders, and the 33” Veem props. ZF gears along with the MAN engines’ torque and RexRoth controls, enable the 50C to spin and maneuver on a rowdy billfish with finesse! No doubt, the Viking 50C is built battlewagon-tough to take on any sea condition, whether on the tournament circuit or on an extended cruise. But Viking’s interiors are also second to none. Working with the Viking design team, in-house craftsmen hand finish matched wood grains for classic elegance, designer accents such as headliner teak trim, and the ingenious use of space that are standard on the Viking Convertible fleet.

Viking’s commitment to excellence encompasses the entire vessel—bow to stern, interior and exterior. Salon entry is on starboard side via electric sliding door from cockpit steps. The beautifully appointed salon/galley/dinette layout features a soothing earthtone palette, L-shaped sectional couch that lifts for rod and reel storage underneath, and cocktail table to port with C-shaped dinette to port forward. Large flatscreen TV is mounted on bulkhead above dinette and can be viewed from all seating areas.

Cabinetry containing Bose home theater surround sound entertainment system, bottle storage, and main electrical panel, is on starboard aft side and flows into the L-shaped Corian-topped galley with island counter and 2 upholstered bar stools. Companionway to lower-level accommodations is on portside—flow shifts from starboard salon entry to port companionway and walk-through galley. Galley features recessed hob (3-burner cooktop) with Corian cover for expanded counter area and a clean uncluttered look. All appliances are hidden in cabinetry. Refrigerator and freezer drawers are undercounter. Dinette seats 3-4 around a gloss-finished teak table on single pedestal. Island bar provides extra dining places if needed or for serving snacks and beverages, etc.

The Viking 50C features a standard 3-stateroom, 2-head accommodations layout. Doorframes are arched—a very upscale design touch. Amidships master stateroom on starboard side features an island queen berth that lifts for storage underneath, nightstands, drawers, maple-lined hanging locker, 22” flatscreen TV, and ensuite head with large fiberglass shower stall. Two portside forward and aft guest staterooms feature generous sized over/under bunks and access to guest/day head located in between staterooms on portside. Washer and dryer are closeted in aft guest stateroom. All staterooms and heads are nicely appointed and very comfortable, making longer fishing trips and cruises enjoyable.

The open flybridge is the typical convertible set-up with helm console and two standard Murray helm chairs, forward lounge seating and starboard side bench seat that is hinged for storage access and has removable backrest for aft-facing jump seat at aft end. Helm pod is flanked by molded in boxes with gas-strut lifting lids for VHF radio and other electronics. Raised panel with three display screens are protected from elements by weather-tight clear acrylic covers. Some flybridge options could be teak helm pod with single lever controls, bow thruster, hardtop with overhead bins for electronics and electric teaser reels, tower, outriggers, center rigger, 3-sided zipped Costa enclosure, rocket launchers on aft deck rail, and more. Electronics packages could be customized by owner and installed by Viking’s Atlantic Marine Electronics. Extended aft deck provides walkaround space behind helm chairs and the overhang shades the cockpit mezzanine below. A hatch in aft deck and angled ladder takes you down to the mezzanine level of cockpit.

The 140 sq ft cockpit with observation mezzanine has sufficient area for a full-size fighting chair. Viking includes a deck plate for that option. The large freezer under the hinged portside mezzanine bench seat comes with a divider to keep bait separate from food. Engine room access is through bench seat section that lifts up to reveal steps down to watertight door. Angled ladder with handhold is on starboard side over cabinet with tackle drawers. Refrigerated drink box is under step to salon. Either of two fore/aft fishboxes in cockpit sole could be plumbed for livewell. Another insulated box could be for ice storage and fed by optional Eskimo ice machine (in engine room below). Built-in transom fishbox is another option. Transom door with lift gate is standard, along with transom swim steps. Under gunwale stowage hides shore water, cable TV, phone, and power connections, equipment such as gaffs, and more. Rupp flush-mounted rod holders are standard. Cockpit could be configured and outfitted to an owner’s fishing style and personal preferences, making each 50 Convertible a semi-custom sport fishing yacht.

Viking 50 Convertible length overall (LOA) is 54’8” with standard bow pulpit; beam is 17’ and draft is 4’10”. Fuel capacity is 1,000 or 1,200 (optional) gallons, water capacity is 183 gallons, and holding tank is 54 gallons. Displacement weight with standard fuel load is 66,500 lbs. Standard power: Twin 1,100 hp MAN V10 1100CRM diesel inboards. Optional power: Twin 1,360 hp MANV12 1360CRM diesel inboards.

Best Full-Size Cruiser 50-54 Feet

Winner: Dufour 520

Three French boats of similar size and price points came together to form the Best Full-Size Cruiser 50 to 54 Feet class. The Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, Dufour 520 and Jeanneau 51 were built from three of the world’s most established and well-known high-volume production boatyards.

The Beneteau 51.1 was a fresh, new design, not a scaled-up add-on to a previous line of yachts. Its hull form includes a hard chine, something that Tim Murphy immediately noticed. “Beneteau was one of the first companies to add chines, they were in the first wave,” he said. “The chines were always aft of the beam, and you’d hear three things about why they were putting them there. Some would say it’s for styling, some for performance, some for interior volume. It does give you a structural bump in the hull form.

“This boat, according to a company representative, was inspired by Rambler, an 88-foot maxi racing boat that has a very, very fine entry forward and then the chine right up near the bow, so it gets some flare and volume straightaway. This Beneteau is also carrying the chine forward, which gives you low wetted surface below the waterline and then large interior volume outside of that. So this is a new thing we’re seeing.”

“I thought the boat sailed very nicely,” said Bill Bolin. “The code zero sail was fabulous, it really lit the boat up. It had a big bimini, but it wasn’t a problem getting out of the cockpit from the steering stations, which were in the aft corners.”

“On the motoring side of things, this boat has plenty of power,” said Ed Sherman when discussing the Jeanneau 51. “At 2,800 rpm, we were getting 8.5 knots, and the sound levels were very low.”

“One of the things I hadn’t seen on a boat this size was the aluminum stringer system down below,” said Bolin. “During sea trials, we had light air, maybe 6 to 8 knots of breeze, and the boat was making 4.8 to 5 knots. And when the wind picked up a little, we actually registered 6.6 knots. It tacked through about 95 degrees, so from a performance standpoint the boat was pretty good.”

“The Jeanneau 51 is the smallest boat in Jeanneau’s Yacht series, which also includes a 54, 58 and 64,” said Murphy. “They call the transformer transom, which folds down to make a swimming and boarding platform, the ‘terrace.’ So they’re able to use the same part for the 51’s terrace as they do for the 54. It’s the same for the cockpit table. So that’s one of the reasons they’re able to bring in the smaller boat at a competitive price point.”

At $420,000 for the base boat, the least expensive yacht in this grouping was the Dufour 520. “In terms of motoring capability, it’s quite good,” said Sherman. “We got 9.2 knots at high speed, which was excellent.”

“The Dufour offered the most pleasurable sailing experience in this class,” said Murphy. “It starts with the helm, which answered beautifully and I didn’t feel like I was fighting it. It was a very smooth feeling. We did not sail it in a lot of breeze, maybe 7 to 8 knots, but we were making close to 6 knots. I wrote down, ‘The helm feels good,’ and underlined it.”

The creature comforts were also outstanding on the Dufour. “There’s a lot of flexibility in the cockpit,” added Murphy. “When sailing, you use it in the traditional way. But once you’re at anchor you have sun pads that come out and a transom that folds down to reveal a sink, grill and fridge. So it becomes kind of a party platform with the outdoor galley.

“Down below, you have the [real] galley forward, so all of the social space is gathered right at the base of the companionway stairs when you come down. The navigation station slides forward, so you can use it as an aft-facing nav station or a forward-facing table for socializing. There were all these things that adapt to the different ways people use their boats, and that boat was also the best to go sailing on. The helm felt the best, there was a traveler on the main so you could shape your mainsail leech, and it had a good suit of sails, so it also gave you the most options there.”

“It has a lot of unique features, and they delivered them well,” said Bolin. “I feel the Dufour 520 was the winner of the Best Full-Size Cruiser 50 to 54 Feet class.” And so did his fellow panelists.

Wingsail crumples on a foiling 50-foot catamaran during SailGP training

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — The wingsail of a foiling F50 catamaran being steered by Martine Grael of Brazil suddenly crumpled and crashed to the deck on Monday during a SailGP preseason training camp. There were no injuries.

The boat was foiling at about 70 kph (43 mph) when the wing measuring 24 meters (79 feet) failed. Video from the boat appears to show the crew beginning a maneuver. While one crewman ran to the jib, which began flapping, another crewman scrambled to the base of the wing and then back to the starboard cockpit, narrowly avoiding the falling debris. A loud popping sound could be heard.

Grael, a double Olympic gold medalist, was announced last week as the first woman to helm a boat in the global league, which was co-founded by tech billionaire Larry Ellison and five-time America's Cup winner Russell Coutts of New Zealand. The six-person crew Monday included both new Brazilian team members and experienced SailGP athletes.

The extensive damage will affect the rest of the training camp since there's just one boat in Bermuda. The next training camp will be before the first regatta of Season 5 in Dubai on Nov. 23-24.

Exactly one year earlier, Team New Zealand's 29-meter (95-foot) wingsail suddenly shattered and fell into the Mediterranean in a stunning scene just moments after the Kiwis finished racing on the first day of the France Sail Grand Prix in Saint-Tropez. The crew escaped injuries but the damage sidelined the boat through the following regatta.

The highly complex wingsails look and function like airliner wings, providing the power that allows the 50-foot catamarans to foil above the waves approaching highway speeds. They can be configured for different strength winds and weigh between 400 and 500 kilograms (between 900 and 1,100 pounds).

SailGP includes the world's best sailors, including many who have won Olympic medals and the America's Cup. The $2 million, winner-take-all season championship race is the biggest cash prize in sailing.
