The Biscay 36: A Classic Bluewater Cruiser Specs & Key Performance Indicators

If you are looking for a traditional, sturdy and comfortable cruising yacht that can take you across oceans, you might want to consider the Biscay 36. This sailboat was designed by Alan Hill and built in the UK by Robert Ives Ltd and Falmouth Boat Construction Ltd from 1974 to 1990. Only 29 units were produced, making it a rare and sought-after boat among long-distance sailors.

Summary Analysis of the Design Ratios for the Biscay 36

eBook: How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of just 14.6 suggests that the Biscay 36 will need a stiff breeze to get her going. In light conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing may be the way to go.

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 42.2 means that a sailboat like the Biscay 36 (which doesn't have a stiffness-enhancing bulb keel), is likely to benefit from being reefed early to keep her sailing upright in a moderate breeze.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 356, tells us the Biscay 36 creeps into the ultra-heavy displacement category. Load her up as much as you like and her performance will be hardly affected, not that it was ever startling. Few if any sailboats are built to this displacement category these days - but they remain popular with some long-distance sailors.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 34.3 suggests that crew comfort of a Biscay 36 in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate bluewater cruising boat - a predictable and acceptable motion for most seasoned sailors.

5. The Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of 1.7 indicates that a Biscay 36 would be a safer choice of sailboat for an ocean passage than one with a CSF of more than 2.0.

Any Questions?

Is the Biscay 36 still in production and, if not, when did production end and how many were built?

No, the Biscay 36 is not in production anymore. The last boat was built in 1990 after a construction run of only 29 units

What is the history of the builders of the Biscay 36?

The Biscay 36 was built by two companies: Robert Ives Ltd and Falmouth Boat Construction Ltd. Robert Ives Ltd created the deck and hull mouldings, while Falmouth Boat Construction Ltd did the fitting out and completion. Robert Ives Ltd was founded in 1969 by Robert Ives, a former naval architect who worked for Camper & Nicholsons. The company specialized in building high-quality fiberglass yachts, such as the Cygnus range. Robert Ives Ltd ceased trading in 1992. Falmouth Boat Construction Ltd was established in 1974 by John Peake, a former employee of Robert Ives Ltd. The company continued to build custom yachts until 2013, when it was acquired by Falmouth Boat Co., which still operates today as a boat repair and maintenance service.

What sail plan and rigging options are available for the Biscay 36?

The Biscay 36 was available as either a ketch or a sloop. The main mast is supported by two sets of spreaders and shrouds on each side. The mizzen mast is shorter and has no spreaders.

What keel options are available for the Biscay 36?

The Biscay 36 has only one keel option: a long keel. This means that the keel extends along most of the length of the hull, the aft end of which supports the rudder.

What is the Biscay 36 like to sail?

The Biscay 36 is not a performance-oriented boat, but rather a comfortable and safe cruiser. It has a heavy displacement of 15,680lb (7,112kg), which makes it slow to accelerate and hard to manoeuvre in tight spaces. It also needs a good breeze to get going, as its sail area/displacement ratio is only 14.6. However, once underway, it sails smoothly and steadily, with little heel or motion. It can handle rough seas and strong winds well, thanks to its high ballast/displacement ratio of 42.2 and its low capsize screening formula of 1.7. It is also easy to balance with its ketch rig, which allows adjusting the sail area according to the conditions.

What is the average cost of a secondhand Biscay 36?

The price of a secondhand Biscay 36 may vary depending on its condition, equipment and location. According to Yachtworld, the current listings range from £29,950 to £49,950, with an average of £39,950. However, these prices may not reflect the actual market value, as the Biscay 36 is a rare and desirable boat that may sell quickly or privately.

What other sailboats have been created by the designer of the Biscay 36?

The designer of the Biscay 36 was Alan Hill, a British naval architect who worked for several yacht builders and magazines. He designed many other sailboats, such as the Trident 24, the Trident Challenger 35, the Trident Voyager 35, the Trident Warrior 35, the Trident Warrior 40, the Trident Venturer 38, the Trident Venturer 40, the Trident Venturer 44 and the Trident Venturer 50.

The above answers were drafted by sailboat-cruising.com using GPT-4 (OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model) as a research assistant to develop source material; to the best of our knowledge,  we believe them to be accurate.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Boat Descritption

Cygnus_Biscay_36

The BISCAY 36 was originally conceived, quiet simply, as the ideal cruising yacht. Materials were to be carefully selected to achieve this aim both traditional and new, each chosen for its ability to perform its function to the highest standards.

The yacht was designed to be for the owner who wishes to cruise long distances with consistently good performance, whether under sail or motor.

It was to have at least five berths, be around 36 feet long, have a full keel, and be ketch rigged. It had to appeal to the man who would expect the best.

Two competitors in the 2018 Golden Globe solo non-stop round the world race have chosen Falmouth Boat Co. to refit their yachts – one of which was originally built at the Flushing boatyard.

Antoine Cousot (France) and Nabil Amra (USA / Palestine) have selected Biscay 36 class ketch yachts for the 27,000 mile retro non-stop circumnavigation.

The race will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s major achievement in becoming the first to sail solo non-stop around the world. After leaving Falmouth in 1968 he returned 312 days later as the sole finisher in the original Sunday Times Golden Globe Race.

Falmouth Boat Co. built 29 of the traditional long keeled yachts from 1975 – 1990 and Antoine’s yacht was the first built.

Review of Biscay 36

Basic specs..

The Biscay 36 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.75 - 1.85 meter (5.74 - 6.04 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Biscay 36 is 1.72, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Biscay 36 is about 180 kg/cm, alternatively 1012 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 180 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1012 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio) Indicates how fast the boat is in light wind: - Cruising Boats have ratios 10-15 - Cruiser-Racers have ratios 16-20 - Racers have ratios above 20 - High-Performance Racers have ratios above 24 Sail-area/displacement ratio (SA/D ratio): 14.56

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 21m 2 (226 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

If you need to renew parts of your running rig and is not quite sure of the dimensions, you may find the estimates computed below useful.

The design and style of this long-keeled, ketch-rigged cruiser is very much that of a wooden yacht built in GRP. She was designed by Alan F Hill to include the heavy-displacement cruising characteristics many yachtsmen regard as essential: easy motion, directional stability, good sea-keeping andan easily handled but fl exible and powerful rig. She fi rst appeared in 1974, moulded by Robert Ives and fitted out to a high standard by Falmouth Boat Construction. She proved popular and had a reasonably long production run. She has a generous galley and a large chart table over the head of the quarterberth.

LOA 10.9m (35ft 11in), LWL 8.22m (27ft), beam 3.28m (10ft 9in), draught 1.62m (5ft 4in), displacement 7,127kg (15,680lb). Price guide: £40,000 to £50,000. YM Test report September 1975.

Broker's Comments

This Biscay 36 was hull No. 1 when Falmouth Boat Construction started to build these boats. She went through a 12 month refit at the Falmouth Boat Construction yard in 2017/18 in preparation for taking part in the Golden Globe Race which started in June 2018. After crossing the Atlantic, the owner had to retire from the race due to injuries. The rig, spars, sails, fittings and much more where replaced during the refit and fitted with the race's mandatory safety equipment. The boat is sold without the green vinyl and comes with a berth in Mindelo paid up until end of April.

Broker Remarks

This Biscay 36 Ketch for sale with Network Yacht Brokers Plymouth is an excellent yacht she has had a major refit over the past two and a half years with almost £30,000 spent on her, she is a must see for any Bisay enthusiasts! The Biscay 36 was designed by Alan Hill and built by Falmouth Boat Construction in 1982, to a very high standard. During the last two and a half years the current owners have carried out a total refit (details of this refit are available upon request) to include a new Beta Marine 43hp diesel engine, gearbox and propshaft. Under the previous owners (well known broadcasters Paul Heiney and Libby Purves) Ayesha took part in the 2003 AZAB race. Following this Paul Heiney took part in the twelth OSTAR race in 2005 (single handed transatlantic race) and his book "The Last Man Across The Atlantic" tells the story. Apart from the above, this Biscay 36 Ketch has undertaken many brave voyages, including a trip to Antartica via panama. She achieved a "record" as the GRP  yacht that has travelled the furthest South in the world, which only cements herself as a very safe and seaworthy yacht, that is a traditional sea boat! If you are searching for a special Ketch rigged ocean yact then this Biscay 36 Ketch is certainly worth considering!

Broker's Comments

Fantastic condition inside and out this Biscay 36 is definately a must see! Built by Emsworth Yacht Harbour and designed by Alan Hill this particular model being sloop rather than the ketch option, a sloop being able to point a little better. A Biscay 36 is within a selection of yachts approved to participate in the Gloden Globe Race 2018 last count 3 entered the GGR 2018. Sir Robin quoted ' what is required is a comfortable boat that rides well with easy directional stability. Antoine Cousot said 'for the GGR she is the best compromise: light, fast and sturdy'. The Biscay is regularly compared to the Tradewind 35, Bowman 36, Vancouver 34 and the Rustler 36. Current owner bought boat in 2008 in Falmouth where he had sailed around Falmouth and the Scillies. Current owner brought her back to Portsmouth and has sailed her mainly in the Solent and as far as Weymouth to Brighton either side. In current ownership the owner has replaced the aqua drive coupling. New prop shaft and prop balance winter 2017/18.

Broker's Comments

This Biscay 36 is a substantial sea going yacht that would be at home cruising the world's oceans. However, she is of a size that is equally at home, and easily handled, for more local voyaging offshore and cross channel. She has been well cared for in her present ownership and is well equipped, having been owned by an experienced and competant yachtsman. A handsome yacht that could take you anywhere, or provide a comfortable floating home. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.
