Black Watch
The design contract is dated 1938 for Rudy Schaefer of the Schaefer beer family and this was the first design that Sparkman and Stephens tank tested.
1938 – Launched as Edlu II.
1947 – The Schaefer family donated the boat to Tabor Academy and the boat was renamed Tabor Boy .
1954 – Sold to Dr. George Brooks who named her Black Watch . Dr. Brooks owned her for 51 years and sailed her out of Larchmont Yacht Club.
She finished second in the Newport – Bermuda Race of 1938 to ‘ Baruna ‘. Since she has competed in a further 10 Bermuda races and won her class in 2012.
2005 – Owned by a syndicate of 5 New York YC members her homeport in Newport, RI. (2021)

Blackwatch 19 is a 18 ′ 6 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Dave Autry and built by Blue Water Boatworks (USA) between 1979 and 1981.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Black Watch 40

At the Newport Beach boat show in California this fall, among the trawlers and cruising yachts of Far Eastern design and construction, a glistening white nugget sat begging for attention. The Australian-built Black Watch 40 sportfisherman held her own within the realm of big boys, with a layout so simple and well thought out that it deceives the mind into thinking something is missing.
In fact, it brings to light some “oh, wow” touches missing on American designs.
The first is the belowdecks stowage, separated from the engine compartment and bilges by bulkheads, beneath the galley sole. This dry, cleanly finished compartment can hold dry stores, rods and reels, tools and more.
Trick number two is a matching pair of tuna tubes flush-mounted in the gunwales on either side of the boat. These units provide a constant flow of water to small fish entered headfirst into the cylinders, keeping the catch alive. East Coast anglers do not cast to free swimming or tailing marlin, but as live-bait techniques for tuna continue to gain in popularity, options like the tuna tubes should become more popular on the circuit.
All deck hardware, including pistons, latches and hinges, is stout. Other amenities are plentiful for acquiring booty for the dual fishboxes. A live bait tank, a transom door, a tackle and prep center, and a freezer are neatly placed in the large cockpit.
The saloon is richly appointed, with quality joinery and spacious accommodations. The head is large, as is the separate stall shower.
Two U-shape counters, one to port and one to starboard, provide a large working area and good stowage in the galley.
If there is one thing to quibble about, at least in comparison with American convertibles, it is the size of the 40’s flying bridge. Visibility is great, but the console is a bit tight and the forward-of-the-console seating many of us have grown accustomed to is missing.
Power for the Hunt-designed hull is a pair of turbocharged 500 hp Yanmars.
After seeing the 40, I am waiting-not too patiently-for the 50-footer soon to become part of the Black Watch line.

In the way of background, BLACK WATCH (formerly EDLU II) was built in 1938 for the Schaefer family of Larchmont , NY. Construction took place in City Island at the Nevins Shipyard to the design of Sparkman and Stephens. This was the first design that S & S tank tested.
In 1941 the Schaefer family loaned the boat to the US Navy. She performed coastal security patrols (Corsair Fleet) during WW II. Winning a battle flag for scaring away German U boats off the coast of New England.
The Schaefer family donated the boat to Tabor Academy in 1947 and the boat was renamed TABOR BOY. Tabor Academy sold her in 1954 to Dr. George Brooks. Dr. Brooks owned her for 51 years and sailed her out of Larchmont Yacht Club.
In the Fall of 2005 several New York Yacht Club members came together to buy and restore BLACK WATCH. Everything possible has been accomplished to return her to first class condition with an emphasis on keeping her as original as possible including: replacing 2/3 of the bottom planking (installing all new thru hull seacocks) refastening the hull replacing the deck (rebuilding all of the deck furniture) replacing the wiring and electrical systems restoring/rebuilding the galley stove replacing the plumbing and fresh water systems (installing a shower) replacing the engine, shaft and propeller replacing the electronics (navigation) new heads new interior cushions/upholstery new standing and running rigging new sails new safety gear (life rafts, MOMs and PFDs)
