Serving Put-in-Bay, Kelly's Island, Port Clinton, Sandusky & Cedar Point

Jet express ferry boat fleet.

The original Jet Express was put into service to make the journey to Put-in-Bay from Port Clinton, Ohio. The Jet Express was the First Waterjet powered, all aluminum catamaran in service in North America, as well as the fastest ferry in North America.

The Jet Express makes the 12-mile trip to Put-in-Bay in less than 25 minutes, at speeds in excess of 42 miles per hour, from its downtown dock in Port Clinton. While on board you will experience the smoothest riding ferry on Lake Erie due to its catamaran design, and lightweight all aluminum construction. A narrated educational tour highlights point of interest along the route.

The Jet Express II was put into service in 1992 to help the increasing demand for service to the Lake Erie Islands. A little longer than the Jet Express, the Jet Express II was also designed to be utilized as an excursion vessel, to make special excursions to places such as Detroit, Toledo, and Canada. To better deal with larger crowds, the Jet II has a larger loading area, and more restrooms to deal with longer cruises, as well as a small increase in passenger capacity. The Jet Expres II was re-powered in 2004 with state-of-the-art Deutz 620 diesel engines, with more power and better fuel economy, making it the most powerful vessel in our Fleet. You can see pictures of the entire Jet Express Fleet on our photos page.

The Jet Express III was put into service in 2002 to help with heavy passenger counts during the weekends and holidays. Smaller than the Jet Express and Jet Express II, the Jet Express III is more economical to run in the spring and fall when loads are smaller.

In 2005 the Jet Express III started service out of Sandusky with direct service to the Lake Erie Islands. In 2006, the Jet III began service to Kelleys Island, as well as Put-in-Bay. The Jet Express III offers service from Sandusky to Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay, which allows for an easy inter-island service between the two most popular islands on Lake Erie as well as Cedar Point. Please check the Schedule for departure/return times.

With the addition of Jet Express IV, a variety of Excursion Adventure Cruises will be offered from various departure points Jet Express IV will make Friday evening voyages into downtown Cleveland for Indians games and other exciting festivals and events. Hop aboard for an Island Hopping Adventure to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island on summer Saturdays, or choose the relaxing Sunday Lazy-Day River Cruise and Wednesday Winetasting Sunset Cruise offered throughout the summer. Captain conveniently picked up me and my future wife in his Zodiac Deluxe Dinghy at Catawba State Park and shuttled us out to the PowerPlay. We cruised over to South Bass Island where we spent the afternoon swimming at anchor in the sun. Thanks, Captain Jim!

testimonial-photo-for-Brandi

My bachelorette crew came down from Michigan for a four-day bachelorette extravaganza. By far the highlight of the weekend was Friday’s PowerPlay charter. The dinghy ride was amazing. Having so much fun we extended the charter a couple of more hours. We’ll definitely be back this summer.

3- The choppy wave periods/crazy microburst activity - dangerous for all, can be over for a cat. There was a cat at my home marina inverted a couple years ago (friends of another forum as well) - was a beautiful day- then it wasn't. Thankfully everyone survived.
4- Even if it's not a dangerous event, I'm not sure the ride would be that great most days when the is good- again the steep waves with sort periods.

I kind of like cats, but this isn't really the place for them.

you'll have issues with Cost/season length. but more important...I can't think of a travellift on that can haul anything much wider that 16ft! (maybe 18ft) Which gets seriously important in the fall! gets hard here in the winter!

than and many are not geared towards cats (chicken v. egg). Two, it would be harder to justify the cost of a cat when only sailing in the short summer season (If you want to sail in the here you need an ice boat). Three, I think in the GL a lot of the folks looking for that extra space just get one of those noisy, mastless (powerboat).

On the other hand, I would think the lake conditions most days would be quite conducive to cat sailing.

. Get much over 40 feet or above 14-15 foot beam and quite a few options disappear for places to visit. Longer can be handled, but not everywhere. And above 16 foot beam, not a lot of places can handle hauling, so a big crane rental may be involved.
03-06-2021, 06:40
Boat: 1968 Columbia 50
40 would have a seriously hard time finding a place to haul out, or find a slip. At 22'2" of beam, that would out almost every hoist, but would be possible by hiring a huge crane at no small cost to lift. End tie slips are extremely rare. I see only a cat or two every year, and even those are 105's, which use a ball in my local harbors.
2. Transportation costs. Getting a bigger cat to the Great Lakes would be a dilemma. It would almost have to be brought in on its own via a , adding to costs to just get it there. Trucking a 23' beam or larger cat 800 miles from salty water would run into monstrous trucking costs, two escorts cars, most likely police escort the entire way..serious coin.

34 footers that will fit into a slip, but other than that, you'd be on a ball. And, as you traveled up and down the coast, you'd be unlikely to find a slip.

The waves on Lake Michigan, and I suspect Erie, are notoriously steep and close together. Six foot waves on the ocean are no big deal, but here, some fresh six footers will get your attention. A deals with them by punching into them and riding over them. Less ability to punch through means more riding over the steep, frequent waves.

The short sailing season has been mentioned a couple times in this thread. That short season treats catamarans, trimarans, monohulls, and powerboats all the same, so I don't see it as being a factor.

Catamaran for trolling Erie?

catamaran lake erie

  • Add to quote

Thinking about moving up in boat size. One hull I am considering is a Cat hull in the 25 foot range like the Worldcat 266. I know some of the charters run the larger inboard cats but hardly ever see an outboard cat in the 25' range trolling Erie. Seems they would be a great boat given that they are meant to run/handle a nasty chop and are very stable on the drift.

catamaran lake erie

Like you; I know some capt who run inboard cats that eat Lake Erie waves. IMO - An important attribute to a cat is the beam. Many cats sit high on the water. Sitting high in a narrow beam make the cat look like its on stilts and very rocky. If there is a lot of beam to support the height the cats they eat waves and are comfortable to fish on. Wide beam, good weight distribution, lower center of gravity still apply. I seen other cats that sit high on a normal beam and they rock like crazy. I guess not all cats are created equal. Nothing a Sea Trial doesn't resolve. Run in the waves and cut the engine to drift and test her stability. Good Luck!

catamaran lake erie

I had a 27' Baha Cruisers cat twin Volvo i/o I had 9.8 Tohatsu 4s for a kicker. I traded the cat for a 23' Parker the cat is a far better boat then any sigle hull. I am in the proscess of looking at cats my Parker is a 2011,I will only buy outboards. The cat that I owned is now docked at Fenwick under the name of Hoiser Hooker. The reason I got rid of my cat maintaince 2 engines 2 i/os 4 props. I do miss my cat it was a great trolling/drifting machine. I woulld consider a TOMCAT at this point, I wish I would have repowered to twin obs.

I was intrigued, so went to their website. There is a great video there of one running side be side against non cat, quite impressive.

catamaran lake erie

Stars, Could you post a link to the video, would be curious myself to take a look at the video.

I looked at the cat you specifically referenced. The 266 does not have the concerns other cats have, you can tell by looking at it. looks awesome! The bow area is really neat. You can fish up there. Nice and open aftward. One of my bug-a-boos is I always wish for a smaller motor well although the 266 does a nice job incorporating storage into the transom. I like the sound a cat makes when on anchor when the waves roll thru the tunnel. Sounds pretty cool and only on a cat. Curious - Are you buying local, Midwest or east coast?

Tommy I'm not ready to buy just yet. Maybe next year. Just doing my homework right now. Would definitely have 4 stroke outboards. Probably look wherever I can get the best deal. My last 2 boats have come from Florida. Check out this video. Look at what these guys are running through and pay attention to how they are NOT getting their teeth jarred loose.

catamaran lake erie

World Cat makes a good one dude...Ive heard good and bad on the big cats for trolling...But everyone compliments their wave handling...

Holy Cow! they were head on into the seas. They never got wet and like you said - they have all their teeth! Good one to research dude!

Every time that boat has spray shoot out the front of the bow I can guarantee the occupants are feeling it.

Yea, they run real well straight into the waves, but how do they handle when you quarter or trough with the boat? I too have a fascination with Cats, and have thought that a 25' ish boat would be about perfect at erie. Put a couple of 150-200' 4strokes and that would be a sweet ride. Also, with the motors pushing 2 hulls, how much speed do you lose to say a 23T Contender rigged with the same horsepower?

Keep in mind Lake Erie aint no ocean...What works there does not apply to the fast chop we get...Personally id look into something that has a very sharp entry and a flat transom...Drop the trim tabs and put her around 20mph and go...Any type of Downeast style boat I feel would rip on the Great Lakes...Judge Yachts 27 Chesapeke is an interesting build... I honestly am kinda impressed with my Sportcraft...she carves up 3ft waves like butter...The nose does all the work...Not the greatest built boat in the world by any means, and I aint winning any races, but gets the job done...Ive got stuck in 6's long ways from home and came home...

I agree with Carpet Bagger. Watch the video closely and you can see the guy's knees buckling in the yellow rain coat. The crest of the waves on Erie is so close...nothing like the ocean. Taking 3-5s broadside would give you white knuckles.

catamaran lake erie

There is a 34' Cat that Charters out of Bula. I've run out with it in my 34' Wellcraft. In 3'ers I'm running about 27 mph and I have had trouble keeping up with it...Granted that's a 34' boat, but I'd imagine a 25' to 27' cat would hold its own on Erie. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Ohub Campfire mobile app

I cant speak for the 25 to 27' class cats . But I run a 34' Baha King Cat with twin 502's with a 13' beam . Head on into 3 to 5 footers at 3000rpm will be about 24 to 27 mph and a comfortable ride and cruiseing speed . With the wider beam the boat will handle these wave conditions in any direction at this speed . As for fishing these boats drift well and are very stable .

Weight and size always wins...lol The 34s are pretty nice platforms Posted using Outdoor Hub Campfire

The wave frequency of Erie and that we indeed have waves and not swells make all the difference when comparing with what you hear on TV ocean fishing shows. "We are out in 7-foot waves..." right, they may be in 7-foot swells (frequently looks about half of their claim) as you can't stand up when a 30-foot boat is rocking in 7-footers on Erie trolling... I bought my Baha 299 specifically for central basin Erie - it is a little deeper than the sportcraft boat and slightly heavier. And while, I can't run as fast as the 34-king cat on rough water - this has a lot to do with weight (as another post said) and combination of length/beam. Yes, size does matter on Erie! My Baha is about 10,000-lbs and I have been on a Baha 31-footer that handles waves better than mine but that boat weights about 14,000-lbs and has the fuel bill to show for it too... If I take my Alumacraft 175 Trophy out in anything more than 2-footers, you are wet and beat up as that light weight aluminum hull bounces like an old fishing float...

The 27' Baha Cruiser I had weighed 9200lbs that was with 100galfuel. I weighed it at the truck scales in Monroeville (11200) on the way from Medina to Catawba Is. I weighed the trailer on the way home 2000 thats how I got my wt. I looked at a 27ht World cat not to impressed the fishing area was small the twin Zukes were nice.I am keeping my eye on a 296 Baha Cruiser would repower and new electronics then sell the Parker. The only time I had water come over the bow was in 6'=9' waves.

If I could get a 1000lbs thrust Terrova with iPilot and an 8' shaft it would open up some possibilities;-) Sent from my DROID RAZR using Ohub Campfire mobile app

I watched around 2min 30 sec. of the video. The Cat passing the other boat was a good comparison. They were wearing yellow slicks for spray but I have yet to see a boat be 100% dry on the erie. Wind and spray will put rainbows all over the lake! I wouldn't make an effort to launch that boat like they do in the video and beat up their rig for no reason. The seaworthiness is impressive. Like the other 34 footer mentioned on here - I've seen them pass other boats like they were standing still in rough water. I hear the cats are more economical b/c the entry into the water is not the bottom of the entire boat. When guys troll with them in strong or gusty wind they often put 1 engine if forward and the 2nd in reverse adjusting the throttle to the conditions. the motor well does take a lot of space but converting into usable storage helps. I like immediate access to the water.
