International Dragon Class Keelboat Siena AUS 118 Built 1967

Siena is an International Dragon Class Keelboat built in Denmark in 1967 by the renowned Borrensen Boatyard. She is named for the beautiful red brown colour of her Honduras Mahogany varnished hull.

Siena was purchased by Mr Jaemie Wilson in Sydney in 2009. Siena was lovingly restored on Raymond Island from March 2009 to November 2010 by Boat Builder Mr John Johnson (also a timber Dragon owner of 1962 Barnett AUS 82 “Ghost”), with assistance from Jaemie and his family and friends.

Siena is an ex-Olympic trial boat having been originally purchased from Borrensen’s by the Victorian Olympic representative crew Mick Brooke, Alan Cain and John Coon from the 1960 Rome Olympics.  Siena was launched at Royal Geelong Yacht club, and has previously been campaigned out of Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Royal Brighton Yacht Club and Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.

Siena has a well-known and competitive history in the Dragon Class. She has competed in a number of major regattas over her lifetime including the 1971 Hobart World Dragon Championships and after restoration, the 2011 Brighton World Dragon Championships.  Former owners have included the late Mr Alan Cain, Olympic Dragon Representative, Mr Mike Fletcher a former Olympic Sailing Coach and Mr Robert Alpe Former Vice President of the International Dragon Association.

Siena is a classic wooden Dragon and is constructed of Honduras Mahogany planks, oak ribs and teak deck and cabin top. With the switch to fibreglass construction in the 1970s, many teams have favoured newer fibreglass boats.  However due to tight class rules, timber boats remain fiercely competitive.  It is the timber Dragons that turn heads and stand out from the crowd in any race due to the innate beauty of their varnished timber hulls.

The Dragon was designed in Norway in 1928 by Johan Anker a designer, yacht builder and yachtsman of great renown in the International Metre classes.  With her beautiful classic sleek lines, the Dragon is one yacht that demands attention wherever she is sailed.

The Dragon is 8.90m (29ft 2in) long, with a beam of 1.95m (6ft 5in), draft of 1.2m (3ft 11in) and a hull weight of 1700kg (3, 700 Ib). Working sail area is 27.7 m2 (298 sq ft) with a 23.6 m2 (254 sq ft) Spinnaker.  The dragon is raced with a crew of either 3 or 4 people with a maximum crew weight of 285 kg.

The Dragon is a prestigious class having been an Olympic class from 1948 until 1972.  Australia’s John Cuneo won the Gold medal in the last appearance of the Dragon at the Olympics in 1972.

Today, over 1400 Dragons are registered worldwide in 26 countries, with the class being one of the most active and competitive in the world.

Dragons have had a presence on the Gippsland Lakes since the early days of the introduction of the class in Australia.  There has been a recent upsurge in interest in the last 2 years with major regattas being held at Metung and Paynesville including the 2015 Dragon Victorian Championships which drew competitors from as far afield as Perth, Sydney and Hobart to enjoy the fine racing waters of our Lakes.

Australasian Championships 2025

The Austra lasian Championships 2025 will be in Perth, Western Australia.  Racing for the  Ted Albert Memorial Trophy and the Prince Philip Cup will start on Saturday 4 January and last heats will be on Friday 10 January.

Classic international dragon yacht for sale, 29 ft sailing boat for sale.

International Dragon was designed by Johan Anker and built by Camper and Nicholson in 1947, yard No.740.

She was one of 4 Dragons built by C&N that year, including Bluebottle, a wedding present from the Island Sailing Club to the late Queen Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip.

The Dragon is a Scandinavian design from the pen of Johan Anker and was first drawn in 1929. A fast and exciting boat to sail that has become popular worldwide, with many examples being built not only in Scandinavia but right across Europe.  The Class is still very active today, and the boats are now built in GRP and raced very competitively.

This boat was completely rebuilt by the previous owner between 2000 – 2002, full list of work done below.

Since 2004 she has been sailed by the current owner in and around Falmouth, used for day sailing in the summer and stored undercover every winter.

She has a custom-made road trailer from Tyrone Snell, making her versatile and easy to keep.

Construction

Carvel planked in pitch pine all bronze screw fastened to steam bent oak timbers.  All new screw fastenings in the refit.

Bottom 5 planks each side fastened with copper rivets.

During the major rebuild the hull was splined to give a tight and fair finish.

Heavy sawn timber floors across the centreline with keel bolts passing through them.

External lead ballast keel of 1 ton with bronze keel bolts.  New keel bolts in the refit.

Marine plywood bulkheads fore and aft of the cockpit bonded to the hull with epoxy for added rigidity.

Plywood hanging knees bonded into the hull with epoxy.

Yacht laid teak deck with varnished teak covering boards and king plank.  Teak deck is glued to a marine plywood sub deck that is screwed to the deck beams.

Simple cockpit with varnished bench seat either side and a painted plywood sole boards.

Small coachroof in the Dragon style with varnished mahogany coamings and a laid teak coachroof deck.

Masthead Bermudan sloop rig on a keel stepped varnished spruce mast.

Varnished spruce slab reefing boom.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless steel chain plates.  These have been fixed to large wooden blocks bonded to the side of the hull which spread the load of the rig down the topsides.

Plastimo roller furling headsail system

Pair of original bronze cockpit sheet winches plus a newer pair of Anderson non-self tailing cockpit sheet winches.

Set of Patrick Selman sails in fair condition including mainsail and genoa, also a spinnaker plus a collection of spare sails which include a set of North Sails.

Dragon Force 65 (DF65)

The Dragonforce 65 is the newest addition to range of sanctioned classes after being sanctioned in 2018. It is 65cm, weighs around 1.3 kilos and fits in the back of most cars for easy transport.

It was developed from the RG65 Class as a Restricted Class to meet the growing demand for lower-cost radio-controlled yachts as an entry-level for the larger classes. However, its enormous popularity has seen every Club building fleets through new and existing members.

The restricted nature of the rules allow for 4 rigs to suit the prevailing weather conditions and limited variations to the boat supplied from the factory.

The Australian distributor is Hobby Warehouse based in Sunshine, Victoria.

DragonFlite 95 (DF95)

The DF Concept was initially conceived quite a few years back by John Tushingham and Mike Weston who had a desire to produce an affordable radio sailing yacht which sailed well, had all the tuning aids that a larger radio yacht had and that was available off the shelf so that fleets could grow quickly.

The concept came to fruition in 2013 with the DF65, based on the Ice RG65 by Mark Dicks. Produced by Joysway Hobby Co in China the DF65 was an instant hit and to date (early 2016) there are over 12,000 boats out there sailing and racing. Whilst the DF65 was finding its feet John Tushingham was approached again by Joysway to produce a large radio yacht.

A great deal of development work on the DF95 took place. The original lines came again from Mark Dicks with JT and Buzz Coleman spending many hours perfecting the design and layout of the new yacht. Production prototypes arrived for testing and evaluation in August 2015 and since then there has been a flurry of activity to make sure that the final production boats are absolutely correct. 

The DragonFlite 95 is constructed of several cutting edge components and composite materials not found in similar priced RC yachts produced by any other manufacturer. With carbon fibre keel fin, advanced design keel bulb, shroudless keel step, one piece carbon mast and mylar sails this all new racer has the kind of light wind performance most other radio yachts can only dream of.

Its lightweight and long, narrow hull would normally mean an inability to perform in strong winds, however this has been countered by designing low aspect, lightweight rigs with careful sail plan development to ensure awesome handling and balance. Even when the boat is overpowered it still remains easily controllable to windward and always has astonishing speed downwind with almost no tendency to ‘nosedive’.

It is highly recommended by Hearns Hobbies to opt for additional Insurance or "Extra Cover" to protect your delivery from possible damage or loss on the carriers part. If an item that is not insured is lost / damaged during delivery / transit then the lost item compensation / refund is up to the discretion of the carrier.

Hearns Hobbies offers shipping with Insurance / "Extra Cover", however this option is not applied by default and is at the discretion of the buyer to select upon checkout. Standard shipping DOES NOT include insurance by default.

International Shipping Insurance:

International shipping by default does not come with insurance. Please be aware of this before checking out. If you would like insurance please Contact Us beforehand so we can see what can be organised.

What are pre-orders? Pre-orders, are an order for a product placed before it is available for purchase.

What are back-orders? Back-Orders allow you to place an order for a product, that is temporarily out of stock.

How much are pre-orders / back-orders? Prices may vary slighlty (from what was paid on the day of the order). Whilst we try to maintain the lowest possible price, factors such as supplier price and exchange rate fluctuations, could affect the final price when we receive it in store.

Note: Pre-orders could in some cases be a deposit price, without any knowledge of a final price from the Supplier or Manufacturer. In all cases you will be notified if there is a significant price change, from what was originally paid, before shipping.

How long do I have to wait for my pre-order / back-order? All orders will be shipped once stock has arrived and full payment has been made, with the exception of Manufacturer Release Dates on some Pre-order Products. Waiting time depends on many factors, which are mostly out of our control. They could be for example, Manufacturing delays (due to global pandemics), Supplier shortages, or shipping delays.

Why am I being charged for my pre-order/back-order, even though the product isn’t released/re-stocked yet? This is pre-payment for an item's payment and delivery costs that isn’t released yet to ensure as soon as it arrives your order can be fulfilled and sent out to you a.s.a.p.
