The Riverboat Postman

Getting here.

We are in Brooklyn, so train is by far the easiest way to get to Brooklyn, and the trains which arrive from Newcastle at about 9.26am and from Sydney at 9.47am still allow plenty of time to get to the wharf. The station is called Hawkesbury River, and our train from Sydney Central station departs from Platform 12 at 8.45am.

If you are coming by car, there is usually enough parking at this time of the day. Parking in Brooklyn is free, some is timed parking (4 hours, which is more than enough as the cruise is just over 3 hours long) and some is untimed.

Take a cruise on the Hawkesbury Mail Boat, the famous Riverboat Postman, and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the lower Hawkesbury River as we deliver the mail and other essentials to the river-access-only settlements upriver from Brooklyn. We leave the wharf at 10am each weekday except public holidays, regardless of the weather – after all, ‘the mail must get through!

The first Riverboat Postman started the run in 1910, and the tradition continues today with Hawkesbury Cruises, the current custodian of this fabulous day trip. Our skippers are locals who have lived in the area their whole lives – be entertained by the stories of the river whilst cruising in comfort up this spectacular waterway. Be assured that at least 95% of what they say is true…

The Riverboat Postman

The Riverboat Postman - an iconic cruise just one hour from the centre of Sydney - delivering the mail to the isolated water-access-only residents of the magnificent Hawkesbury River on behalf of Australia Post (as well as other daily essentials like milk, papers, the odd bottle of rum).

Enjoy morning tea and lunch on board, complete with an entertaining and informative commentary from the local skippers. Departing every weekday with the mail from The Postie Wharf, you'll find them right next to the Hawkesbury River Train Station at Brooklyn.

The boats are large, stable and comfortable catamarans, each with a well-stocked bar on board so you can have a glass of wine or beer with your lunch.

Bookings are essential as they are often full, but payment can be made either on the day or online. The Riverboat Postman looks forward to welcoming you on board soon!

The Riverboat Postman: Hawkesbury River Cruise Review

The Riverboat Postman was one of the most fun day trips I took from Sydney . It was just a little bit after a lot of the COVID restrictions had been lifted in New South Wales. I took two weeks off work and finally started doing the bits and bobs I wanted to explore in my new home that had been off-limits for over a year.

Table of Contents

So I recruited my housemate to come along with me on a Hawkesbury River cruise.

riverboat postman

What is The Riverboat Postman?

There is a stretch of development along the Hawkesbury River just upstream of Brooklyn, New South Wales that isn’t accessible by any roads. These residents love living in the idyllic bush without trading access to the big city…as Sydney is just an hour away. They don’t have cars, but what they do have is boats. The only way in or out is up and down the waterway.

riverboat postman

However, I assume just like the rest of us that these people also probably have online shopping addictions. They need their packages!

That’s where the Riverboat Postman comes in. Since 1910, the fabulous skippers have been delivering mail to these folks and in recent years, have begun bringing the public along to enjoy the scenery as well.

It’s a fun day out of local Aussie history , great food , friendly people, and of course, amazing scenery.

Getting to the Hawkesbury River

It was very easy to get to the starting point for the cruise.

Brooklyn Public Wharf, Dangar Rd Brooklyn, NSW, Australia 2083

riverboat postman

If you take the train , you can see the boat from the platform. It’s maybe a three-minute stroll from Hawkesbury River train station down Dangar Road to the wharf.

If you drive, there is a small parking lot near the boat. Aim to arrive at least 15-20 minutes before your Hawkesbury river cruise, just in case there are any delays on the way. The residents need their mail, so the boat can’t wait for you.

When you book, you will get an email from the Riverboat Postman advising of the best trains to take from Sydney Central station, as well as north towards the Central Coast.

Highlights of the Riverboat Postman

Hawkesbury River Cruise

Here is one of the friendly crew members delivering the mail! At some of the places, the boat hardly slowed down, so they really had to book it to get the mail dropped off and themselves back on the boat in time. It was really entertaining to see how fast they work. I don’t think I would be cut out for this job.

Some of the houses had their own mailbox and piece of land far away from everyone else. Other homes, like these, were clustered closer together and had a mailbox system you might see at an apartment complex.

The landscape on either side of the river was also gorgeous. The skipper was probably the funniest guy in Sydney, so the time on board flew by with fun facts about the area’s history … including scandals and the personal business of the locals. As a nosy person, I loved this part.

Hawkesbury River Cruise

But really, the best bit was being on a boat named after me.

Hawkesbury River Cruise

What to bring along with you

You don’t need to bring any snacks along with you, as you get to eat on the boat. When we borded, the amazing crew of the Emily Melvey gave us a choice of coffee and tea, as well as homemade ANZAC biscuits.

Hawkesbury River Cruise

These cookies were sent by wives and women ‘s groups to soldiers from Australia and New Zealand serving in World War I. They were popular because the ingredients do not spoil easily and the cookies wouldn’t spoil during long journeys. It was all very Australian and very delicious.

We also got a great lunch with a sandwich and salad. If you have any special dietary needs, just call ahead of time to let the staff know and they can sort you out.

Hawkesbury River Cruise

Water is free, but there is also soda, beer , and wine available for purchase at the bar onboard.

My housemate and I were probably the youngest guests on the Riverboat Postman by about 50 years, which worked out well for us because all the pensioners were so kind. I think I walked away with some great advice for preparing for retirement, as well as a slice of cake because one of the ladies was celebrating her 80th birthday with some friends on board.

Just don’t forget a hat, some sunnies, and maybe a pair of binoculars if you’re a birder like my housemate. He saw a few species that he was very excited about.

Hawkesbury River Cruise

Overall, this Hawkesbury River Cruise was one of my favorite day trips from Sydney. It was great value for money, easy to get to, and a lot of fun.

It runs every weekday except for public holidays. On Sundays, there is an alternative sightseeing cruise as there isn’t any mail. You can buy your tickets here .

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury

The wonderful people we met and our new friends in Australia made our trip one of our best. However, the highlight of our seven days in Sydney has to be our Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River.

If you Google what to do near Sydney, you will discover a Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River. A three-hour river cruise about an hour north of Sydney sounded like a fun way to spend our day, so I made our reservations months before arriving in Australia.

Table of Contents

It’s the best choice ever!

This mail delivery has been going on since 1910, well over 100 years. It isn’t just a riverboat cruise but an actual mail boat delivering mail to over 200 residents living in remote communities along the Hawkesbury River. Doesn’t that sound pretty fascinating?

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

I do not know how long ago the riverboat became a tourist attraction and destination, but it is so popular nowadays that there is more than one riverboat, perhaps three. Different cruises are also available.

Tea and lunch onboard

The cruise takes a bit over three hours. During that time, morning tea, including the most amazing Anzac biscuits and an authentic Australian ploughman’s lunch, is hours. The boat leaves promptly at 10 am on weekdays.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

Lunch portions are enormous, and the food is fresh and good. All is more than competently served on this boat by friendly and nice people. It’s more like being in someone’s home than on a commercial boat.

We enjoyed an ice-cold beer with our lunch for a small extra cost from the boat’s full bar service, which is available during the cruise.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

Tea and lunch are served indoors on the lower deck, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery 180 degrees around. After lunch, we moved to the upper open deck, where we sat in chairs and enjoyed this beautiful and relaxing trip.

Where did our Australian riverboat cruise go?

The riverboat postman regularly delivers mail to seven remote settlements inaccessible by road: Dangar and Milson Islands, Kangaroo Point, Bar Point, Marlow Creek, Fisherman’s Point, and Milson’s Passage. The boat returns to Brooklyn in the early afternoon.

Oh the stories

We expected a relaxing and meandering floating trip along the river with occasional stops to drop off and pick up mail, which accurately describes our journey.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

However, we did not expect our Captain’s fascinating stories about each of these communities and the various residents who have lived or still live along the Hawkesbury delivery route. The Captain grew up on this river and also shared his life stories.

We heard heartbreaking, sad stories about the hardships of living in these remote settlements and the lifestyle adjustments these folks have chosen to make. The Captain also provided several hysterical laugh-out-loud tales from the lives of these adventurous folks. What a quick-witted man!

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

We stop at a dock in each community, where someone would be waiting to collect or deliver mail. The first stop was at the area’s largest island, Danger Island.

Peat Island

The boat did not stop at Peat Island, but we learned this island is the former site of a rehab hospital turned mental hospital. The hospital opened in 1904 and closed in 2010, but in its earlier days, it did not enjoy a good reputation; it had a bit of a shady history.

HMAS Parramatta

We did not expect to see an actual shipwreck on our little day cruise, but there it was, the HMAS Parramatta partially submerged right at the shoreline. The HMAS Parramatta was an Australian torpedo boat destroyer that served during World War I.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

In 1934, it was no longer used and was towed to a scrapyard. The towline broke, and the ship floated to shore and ran aground at its current resting place. It remains in place today because no one could move the boat.

Milson Island

Milson Island has an intriguing history. It was used as a quarantine station, a soldier’s hospital during World War I, a mental hospital, and a jail. Today, it is a recreation and sports center.

I would love to have a recording of the entire cruise commentary to listen to again. I do not recall specific tales about the remaining islands and stops we made; there were so many. The stories are simply outstanding, and I cannot possibly remember them all.

One of the great stories we heard was about three prisoners who escaped the prison and island only to stop a car on the road to ask for a ride. A police officer was driving the car! That did not work out well for those prisoners.

Sandstone rock formations

These majestically beautiful rocks, sometimes called “yellow gold,” just appeared on the shoreline before us – so beautiful.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

Our cruise ended too soon, and before we knew it, we were back at the dock in Brooklyn. What a wonderful experience this had been! We wandered around Brooklyn for a while and visited a few shops.

We miraculously found a nearby geocache reasonably quickly- the best kind. If you’re unfamiliar with geocaching, please look at my article Geocaching, t he world’s most giant treasure-hunting game .

The Riverboat Postman cruise is one tour I would gladly repeat. A different cruise takes place on Sunday. There is no mail delivery, and the cruise travels in another direction, but the food will still be fabulous, and I expect the stories told to be just as entertaining.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

The Riverboat Postman cruises are very reasonable, and student and senior rates are available. We are seniors, but young families with children were on our cruise, and I believe this adventure appeals to all ages. The boat is very stable, and we enjoyed a smooth ride.

Free parking is available and accessible to locate nearby if you drive, as we did. A train depot is a brief walk from the dock, and a morning train from Sydney arrives in Brooklyn in time to catch this 10 am cruise boat. Very convenient.

Riverboat Postman cruise on the Hawkesbury River

Movies and books

I enjoy reading about the places we visit, usually before seeing them. In this case, I did not discover any books or movies about the Hawkesbury River, but I’ve found a few of these since we returned.

One movie, a 2004 romantic comedy, Oyster Farmer , tells the story of a young man who runs away to the Hawkesbury River and becomes an oyster farmer. I found it on YouTube as I was typing this article. I hope to watch it in the next few days.

Also, several books have been published describing life on the Hawkesbury River. Kate Grenville’s Secret River , a historical novel, is just one of the books I plan to read.

I purchased Don’t Cry for Me, Aunt Tina , written by Steve Wrixon Russell. As of this date, I have not read the book. I bought it based on its advertisement card at my table on the ship. This book is currently out of stock at Amazon.

Bottom line. If you find yourself in Sydney or its vicinity, take the train or a short car ride out to Brooklyn and spend some time on the Riverboat Postman cruise. Be sure to book ahead, though. It is a top-rated attraction.

Please read my book, Don’t Cry For Me, Aunt Tina, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the experience. I’m getting some great reviews. 4.25 stars on Goodreads. I have a new book out now, Night Train To Aswan, which is also getting great feedback.

Regards, Steve

I read the book and DID enjoy it. I’ll take a look at Night Train To Aswan also. Thank you!

Click here for directions from Google

If you prefer Apple Maps, type in Riverboat Postman and you’ll find us.

The Riverboat Postman departs 10am weekdays, and returns at 1pm.

Just an hour from Sydney’s CBD, The Riverboat Postman offers the perfect day trip for locals and tourists alike. You can't miss us - we are right next to the train platform at the Hawkesbury River Station, Brooklyn, on Dangar Rd.

If you are coming by train, WE NOW HAVE A LIFT AT THE STATION ! It is by far the easiest way to get to Brooklyn, and the trains which arrive from Newcastle at about 9.26am and from Sydney at 9.47am still allow plenty of time to get to the wharf. We usually return at about 1.10pm, in time to catch the 1.24pm train towards Sydney  (the next one is 2.24pm if we are late back) and the 1.46pm train north. For timetable information, use www.131500.com . Our station is called Hawkesbury River, and our train from Sydney Central station departs from Platform 12 at 8.45am (always check before you get on!)

If you are coming by car, there is usually enough parking at this time of the day. Parking in Brooklyn is free, some is timed parking (4 hours, which is more than enough as the cruise is just over 3 hours long) and some is untimed. There is limited specified disabled parking beside our shed, and if necessary you can drive right up to the wharf, drop off passengers then park the car. Parking on Sundays is particularly horrible, so come by train if you can.

If you have a GPS in your car, use 'Dangar Road, Brooklyn' as the address.

If not, take the Brooklyn/Mooney Mooney exit off the Freeway, or Pacific Motorway (M1), follow all the signs to Brooklyn (these will bring you over the old Pacific Hwy bridge to the Sydney side of the river) and turn left onto Brooklyn Rd. Go all the way to the end of it and turn left when you can go no further. There we will be!

The office is open from about 9am Monday to Friday in order to collect the mail from Australia Post, and tickets will be available from then right up until boarding time. Please buy your tickets before you board, and don't forget to book before you come!
