Fire destroys boat docked near Assembly Square in Somerville

Somerville firefighters battled a blaze on a boat docked near Assembly Square at the Winter Hill Yacht Club. The fire was contained to one boat by firefighters, who fought the fire on the dock and from a boat.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Somerville veterans hit the high seas

This past Sunday the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club of Somerville and the Old Colony Yacht of Dorchester hosted their annual Veteran’s Cruise on the Boston Harbor.

The flotilla, carrying close to one hundred disabled American veterans on vessels that consisted of thirty eight donated privately owned boats from members of both yacht clubs, shoved off from the docks of the Winter Hill Yacht Club in Somerville and Old Colony Yacht Club in Dorchester. The flotilla went under police escort by Sergeant James Deyermond with a Massachusetts State Police boat, Sergeant Jim Hennessey with a Massachusetts Environmental Police boat, and Boston Police Officer Merrick aboard the Boston Police patrol boat, also participated.

The Boston Fire Department also escorted the flotilla of veterans with the Department’s fire boat, showering the path with a ceremonial fire hose spray salute to the heroes on board as they passed in front of the USS Constitution that was docked at its port in Charlestown.

Somerville Alderman Walter Pero addressed the crowd of veterans back at the Winter Hill Yacht Club at an old fashion barbecue that was hosted in its entirety by the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club.

Alderman Pero, who is a war veteran himself, attended the event and announced that this was his last term in office and that he is also the last American veteran that is presently serving on the Board of Aldermen here in Somerville.

Somerville Council of Aging Director Cindy Hickey, Somerville Council of Aging Social worker Suzanne Norton, who also facilitates the veterans group, and Somerville Community Police Officer Maryann Manfra, as well as Chelsea Soldier’s Home Director John Davis, participated in the event by organizing and transporting bus loads of veterans, some in wheelchairs, to the event. They enjoyed a fun filled day on the water as a way of being thanked for their services and for all they have done for our country.

One veteran aboard one of the vessels said, “Today’s event was the second happiest day of my life. The first was the day my son was born.”

The veterans applauded and gave special thanks to the Commodores and to the members of the Winter Hill Yacht Club and Old Colony Yacht Club for making the event possible.

Boat sinks at winter hill yacht club in somerville, emergency crews worked to contain fluids and items from the boat that were leaking into the mystic river wednesday..

SOMERVILLE, MA – A motor boat docked at the Winter Hill Yacht Club sank into the Mystic River Wednesday morning, the Somerville Fire Department said. Emergency crews responded to the club around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday and found the boat at one of the docks.

Firefighters put booms in the river to contain leaking fluids and collected items that had floated out of the boat, according to the department.

The Coast Guard, Department of Conservation and Recreation and Department of Environmental Protection assisted with the cleanup effort.

Boat goes up in flames on the Mystic River in Somerville

Live Boston reports a boat docked at the Winter Hill Yacht Club on the Mystic River near Assembly Row went up in flames and sunk this afternoon - and set another nearby boat on fire - around 5:30 p.m.

Somerville Firefighters Local 76 reports marine fire units from Boston, Cambridge and Medford joined the battle against the blaze.

Somerville fire boat sinks at shore drive dock.

Sources have reported that the Somerville Fire Department fire boat bearing the call signs Somerville Marine One has taken on water and has partially sunk at its pier located on shore Drive at the Boat House.

Presumably the sinking occurred during heavy rains over the past few days combined with the battery possibly going dead caused by the automatic pump trying to keep up with the water level.

In previous years, Marine One was docked at the Winter Hill Yacht Club located at 500 Way in Somerville. The boat was docked there free of charge as a courtesy to the fire department where members of the yacht club would keep an watchful eye on the boat for the Somerville Fire Department. This past year the Somerville Fire Department decided to dock Marine One at the public dock that’s located on Shore Drive where it is presently docked usually unattended.

In 2017, the Somerville Fire Department (SFD) put into service their updated Marine Unit on June 30th. It is a 19.5 Sea Fox center console boat that was stationed at the Winter Hill Yacht Club at Assembly Row. Somerville Fire Department as well as Somerville Police Department members have been training with Maritime Tactical Training of Hingham and Massport Fire Rescue Marine Units on Maritime Rules of the Road, Basic Boat handling, Man overboard rescue & Towing operations.

Although at the time of this photo when the Somerville Fire Department boat was not yet officially in service in 2015, while conducting training on June 20th, the members of the SFD Marine Unit came across a vessel in distress on the Mystic River. The boat was taking on water with a flooded engine.

The SFD Marine Unit was able to successfully tow the boat with it’s operator back to the Mystic Wellington Yacht Club.  The Somerville Winter Hill Yacht Club has generously donated at the time the use of a boat slip at the yacht club for the new Somerville Fire Unit boat to be stationed.

The Somerville Police boat was previously docked at the Somerville Boathouse on Shore Drive as well. The Somerville Police boat has not been launched this year due to ongoing repairs of a collision damage that the boat substatined while docking.

As of 12:00 Noon today Monday afternoon the Somerville Fire boat has been pumped out and is floating again.

You call that a boat, it looks like a Mystic river Minnow. Also: How much shore line does Somerville have on the mystic? And it goes only half way across. The boats are used part time or sparse time at best. Time to rethink and do a cost effectiveness. In other words good by to the SS minnow (titanic) SFD boat. And good by to the SS Lusitania the SPD boat.

Boat goes up in flames on Mystic River in Somerville

SOMERVILLE, MASS. (WHDH) - Fire crews rushed to contain a fire that broke out on a boat on the Mystic River in Somerville on Wednesday.

Firefighters could be seen spraying the flames from the dock while another crew in a fire boat worked to keep the fire from spreading to nearby vessels at the Winter Hill Yacht Club on Artisan Way.

Witnesses said it appeared the fire broke out in the area of a blue tarp on the back of the boat. The blaze cast a large plume of black smoke across the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No additional information was immediately available.
