Yachting in Sardinia is aimed at tourists who want to live a sustainable travel experience, aware of preserving the terrestrial and marine environment. It is, in fact, the alternative to the overbuilding that increasingly covers our coasts, also allowing us to reach those hidden corners of the coast, not reachable by land, but of great charm, while at the same time preserving their value. In 2018, after twenty years of activity in the charter sector, having had the vision of what could have been the growth prospects of the Eco-sustainable Nautical Tourism sector, the company decided to change gear and starting from the choice of a certifying body expert in the tourist accommodation sector (and not nautical) such as CSQA, revolutionizing its processes in an integral way and completely redesigning the operational model of the activity. It is also the first Nautical Hotel accommodation facility in the world to also have ISO 9001 certification.

The company today offers its customers the opportunity to find the right offer for their holiday by directly visiting the Yachting in Sardinia website where 8 different offers are available every day, valid only for 24 hours, for a fleet of boats that are completely similar. and throughout to floating and completely eco-sustainable housing units, equipped with all comforts and divided into categories (exclusive, comfort and standard). The customer on board receives 24-hour assistance, also thanks to the SeaTutor monitoring system, and can count on a dedicated Service Operator, ready to respond to any needs of the guest crew, giving the customer the opportunity to experience the sea in total safety.

Group Y has been investing for years in the technical set-up of its boats: from the massive use of photovoltaics, to the elimination of endothermic generators, from the use of double alternators combined with automotive-derived battery packs, to the use of watermakers, from use of purifiers, up to the revolutionary "zero" impact underwater protective coating: the SeaProtector, which replaces traditional antifouling, not only improving the performance of the hull by reducing fuel consumption, but, being totally free of biocides toxic, avoid releasing any type of harmful substance into the water.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Yacht charter & sailing holidays in sardinia.

Yacht charter in Sardinia starts from Marina di Portisco on the chic Costa Smeralda, "the Emerald Coast", an area buzzing with designer shopping, piazzas and stunning views.

Enjoy a sailing holiday on Sardinia's Costa Smerelda, "the Emerald Coast", famous for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and jet set lifestyle.

Sail north into the La Maddelena National Park, a marine park scattered with islands and sandy beaches, including the famous pink beach "spiaggia rosa" on Budelli. The seven main islands offer peaceful anchorages, although there is a small overnighting charge for the mooring buoys provided by the park authority. Visit the delightful harbour at La Maddelana, a fishing village with harbourside restaurants, although in peak season the small harbour is very crowded.

Combine the flavours of Italy and France on this sailing holiday. Bonifacio on the French island of Corsica is within easy reach and the dramatic entrance through the narrow opening in the cliff, the “Bocche di Bonifacio”, is not be missed.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries

1 week sardinia bareboat,  day 1 : portisco.

Portisco lies on the jet set Costa Smeralda ("Emerald Coast"), an area buzzing with designer shopping, piazzas and stunning views.

 Day 2 : Cannigione (15nm)

A sheltered harbour with good seafood restaurants. If you keep going along the Caprera coast, the very deep bay of Porto Palma offers the best sheltered free mooring in the area. Here you can safely stay the night whatever the wind.

 DAY 3 : La Maddelena (6nm)

Visit a couple of small bays in S.Stefano and on the mainland, then sail to La Maddalena harbour on the main island of the Archipelago. La Maddelena is a traditional fishing harbour, picturesque and bustling, but sometimes in peak season the small harbour is very crowded, so you may have to overnight in Palau on the mainland.

 DAY 4 : Lavezzi (15nm)

A marine park with fabulous snorkelling and diving.

 DAY 5 : Bonifacio (21nm)

Bonifacio is on the south coast of Corsica. A dramatic entrance through the cliffs opens into a beautiful bay with anchorages and moorings on the town quay.

 DAY 6 : Porto Massimo (16nm)

A small harbour on the north eastern coast of La Maddelena.

 DAY 7 : Portisco (18nm)

Sardinia Sailing Journal by Hannah, Nautilus Yachting

This was my first time sailing in Italy and I was beyond impressed with not only the fantastic sailing winds but also the variety of jaw-dropping scenery. As a crew, we were pleasantly surprised by the manageable sailing distances between a range of daytime and overnight anchorages and ports, which easily allows for itineraries taking in multiple stops or covering some longer passages.

While it is a more expensive destination compared with Greece, for example, it is definitely rewarding for those looking for a challenge and a change. A week is never enough to explore everything on offer in this region but the amount you can sail and see in that time makes this a perfect destination to combine a week’s charter with a week onshore relaxing, biking, or kitesurfing, all popular options for twin-centre holidays in Sardinia.

Sardinia Sailing Journal by Hannah, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - SATURDAY - Arrival in Portisco

The taxi from Olbia airport to Marina di Portisco was about €55 for two people with luggage and took 20 minutes. There is provisioning in the marina minimarket, this is small but has a reasonable selection to stock up including speciality items for BBQ and a fantastic deli (as to be expected in Italy). The fresh fruit & veg selection was not great but this may be due to arriving late on a Saturday afternoon. It is also quite expensive as there is no other option nearby and there are no niche items eg. gluten-free, vegan etc. There is no delivery service but you can easily push the trolley back to the boat. I would probably recommend pre-provisioning for a large crew or late arrival.

After a busy day, there are two restaurants in the marina plus some snack bars/cafes. Food is reasonably priced and you can always just have a pizza for the cheap option!

SATURDAY - Arrival in Portisco

Day 2 - Sunday

Heading South! The full and thorough area briefing by Sergio on Sunday morning is not to be missed. Full of great local information about procedures, safe harbours, and hazards. Due to the strong winds north of the harbour on our first day, we decided to head south and take it easy. Moresca (lunch stop)

This was a pretty little bay but a bit too close to a fish farm and also busy with local “day boats” from Olbia because of the weekend.

Tavolara (overnight)

A great anchorage with lots of space, a nice sandy beach and impressive scenery. There are mooring buoys but these are for the stylish Italian speed boats so are expensive and unnecessary, holding is good for anchoring and free-swinging. I would suggest avoiding the weekends as you get a lot of day trip boats from Olbia, but they usually leave between 5-7 pm so it is very relaxing overnight. Two restaurants in the bay (one casual, one upmarket), most of their trade comes from the day trip people at lunchtime so they are not always open for dinner in the low season but if there are enough yachts they will.

Sunday

Day 3 - Monday

Exploring La Maddalena

Setting off early we navigated around the eastern end of Tavolara to keep a clear heading north towards La Maddalena National Park. The permit for which is easily purchased in advance online. We perused many of the potential stops on route to our final destination for the evening.

Porto Cevro – Pop in

This is a very tight and exclusive marina for upmarket superyachts and elegant classic vessels. There wasn’t much going on in the early season but I am sure the atmosphere in July & August is great if you are looking for a night out in the Monaco of Italy. You can also moor on the quay or floating pontoon in nearby Porto Vecchio for a quieter (and cheaper) night.

Caprera, Porto Palma

This is a very "nice" bay, nothing overly special but the approach is easy without too many hazards, the water is good for swimming and there is lots of space and it is well protected from nearly all wind directions. You can take a buoy or anchor.

Cala di Villa marina, San Stefano

This is a tricky rocky little bay but it offers great shelter and scenery if you can get a space, it is suitable for lunch or overnight. The sculpture of Garibaldi in the rockface on the cliff is not to be missed!

Maddalena Town, Maddalena Island

This looked very large and busy so we avoided it as we were already fully stocked with food and water so there was no need for a pit-stop yet. It would be great if you need shelter as there are lots of harbour options with 4-5 different marinas/quays!

Palau, Sardinia  – this looks cute from a distance, not as large as Maddalena town but still with a good number of berths and is very close/accessible for an overnight if you are struggling to get in elsewhere.

Cala Corsara, Spargi Island

At the South end of the island, this is a great lunch stop or overnight anchorage with a great beach and some fantastic scenery. All of the “day boats” and motor yachts leave around 5-6 pm when it becomes very peaceful and the local pigs frolic on the beach!

Monday

Day 4 - TUESDAY

Fantastic sailing to Bonifacio, Corsica  The journey from La Maddalena park area to the southern tip of Corsica is a sailor’s blue moon with the right angle and amount of wind for a perfect passage. We set off first thing and arrived by lunch to enjoy the afternoon sightseeing.

Bonifacio is incredible and definitely worth a visit. You should definitely pre-book a mooring online in advance (a few days should be sufficient) as we nearly struggled to get a space in May. The cost with power and water was approximately €70 for a 38ft monohull.

There is plenty to do, see, eat and drink in town. You can stock up on French pastries and wine but you will need to break out your French! When it's warm I recommend catching the tourist train up the hill into town and then walking back down later. There are several walking trails around the down with fantastic views so if you prefer exercise then definitely take a stroll out of town.

TUESDAY

Day 5 - WEDNESDAY

Lavezzi Island, France  We left Bonifacio late and full of croissants so opted for an easy afternoon and overnight anchorage in nearby Lavezzi island en route back to Italian waters. While from a distance this island does not appear to offer enough shelter overnight, once inside the bay we were well-protected and comfortable. Navigation around the many rocks is a little hair-raising but quite manageable with a good look-out and there is plenty of space and good holding. As usual, the day boats disappear before sunset leaving just sailors and seagulls.

WEDNESDAY

Day 6 - THURSDAY

Cala Coticcio & Cala Portese Fantastic sailing again across the straits of Bonifacio, downwind this time, as we watched on in awe as a regatta of high-performance and classic sailing vessels steamed past us with ease. Stopping at Cala Coticcio for lunch is one of the most popular beaches in the Maddalena Archipelago. It is a gorgeous spot but does get quite busy and is not great for an overnight anchorage as the hills create some interesting wind gusts throughout the evening and overnight as the temperature changes. Heading just south to Cala Portese is the popular option recommended.

THURSDAY

Day 7 - FRIDAY

Cala do Volpe & Portisco Marina  We spent a lazy final day ambling down the Sardinian coastline and anchoring for lunch in Cala di Volpe, a huge bay with long beaches and a perfect pit-stop before returning to Portisco marina for check-out and departure.

FRIDAY

Sardinia Sailing Journal by Louise, Nautilus Yachting

Supplied by Louise, Nautilus Yachting

What better way to mark a special birthday than sailing with a group of  your closest friends.  We could not have chosen a more stunning, glamorous destination.  Sailing from Sardinia with Boomerang Charter over to Corsica and back.

This heady mix of uniquely Sardinian & Corsican cultur e ,  language, wine and food delivered a celebration beyond our expectations.

Incredibly, in eight years of sailing this was the most amount of time we have spent under sail covering 149 miles and broke 8.8 knots!

Sardinia Sailing Journal by Louise, Nautilus Yachting

Day 1 - Portisco

A short 20 mins transfer from Olbia airport to the base at Portisco and straight onboard  our Sun Odyssey 490 ‘Aurora’.

It is for good reason that the Boomerang team are consistently one of our top rated fleets in mediterranean.

‘Aurora’, as we would expect, was in immaculate condition.  Boomerang maintain and clean their yachts to the highest standards but it is the thoughtful touches they provide that sets them apart especially for a special occasion.  The abundant fruit basket and sparkling wine were very much appreciated.

A friendly and thorough show around the yacht and a briefing of the area was given by Sergio; useful tips, highlights and hazards all pointed out.

Our pre-provisioning was delivered by Gusto Cambusa.  As a largish crew it was a good idea to have the heavier items brought straight to the yacht.  A top up shop was then required in the adequate supermarket within the marina to top up with fresh fruits, salads, deli meats and cheeses.

Some obligatory bunting strung around the cockpit for the birthday boy ! and then we were lucky to be able to take advantage of our   early embarkation  a nd set sail .

All in all an early morning flight and a long day so we moored up not far away from Portisco and cooked a lovely meal onboard.  Let’s get the party started.

Portisco

Day 2 - Arzachena Bay

Early morning and the weather looks to be fair for our  first dip in the ocean followed by a hearty breakfast

The plan had been to sail to the north side of the Maddalena National Park however a squall mid passage caused us to double back.

These things happen and we found shelter in ‘Arzachena Bay’ with its impressive Neptune sculpture where we were quickly joined by dolphins to lift our spirits

There is a nice restaurant here which looked to be p opular  despite the weather but we decided to cook onboard and make our own fun.

Arzachena Bay

Day 3 - Maddalena National Park

A beautiful sunny day to wake up in the wonderful Maddalena National Park is nestled between Sardinia and Corsica.

We made a brief stop at Gavetti Marina to enjoy a wander around the so pretty, venetian style streets with pastel coloured buildings.   We enjoyed b outique style shopping  and there were some wonderful bars and restaurants.  There is also an excellent fish market right in the marina and a whopping supermarket just on the outskirts of the town.

Skipper Tim was happy that we finally managed to secure a basil plant for the cockpit.

Back on track we had a fun afternoon at Cala G Marino, a beautiful bay between Isola Razelli and Budelli. Paddleboarding, diving competitions, water hammocks and a friendly visiting Seagull.

While it is necessary to obtain a permit to visit the Madalenas in mid and high season. During our visit in early June it was not possible to advance purchase one and the authorities, although visible, did not charge us.

Like many people we had been under the impression that this exclusive area,   playground of the rich & famous ,  would be pricey and this is undoubtedly true in the high season. However, by eating onboard (not every night !) and choosing our moorings carefully we managed to avoid costly marina fees and permits.

It was so lovely here we decided to stay overnight. More great food and hilarity and a stunning full moon.

Maddalena National Park

Day 4 - Corsica

And we head to Corsica !

Up and coming captain Gus was put through his skipper skills today! Sailed to Cala di Zeri on Ile Cavello for lunch and afternoon anchorage.  An equally stunning location with fabulous holiday homes discreetly nestled amongst the rock face.

Lots of relaxing and swimming.  As the afternoon progressed a flotilla of jet skis came through to dramatic effect.

Our overnight anchorage at Baie de Rondinara.  There is a restaurant here that is open until around 6 o’clock. In the mornings they also provide french pastries for breakfast - mouth watering pain au chocolat, pain almond and croissant; all at such reasonable prices it would be rude not to!

Corsica

Day 5 - Bonifacio

Bonifacio! has to be high up the bucket list of destinations for any sailor and a place I have been longing to visit for many years.

An epic sail along the rugged coastline escorted by pods of dolphins, to the jaw dropping cut in the cliffs where the old town teeters above and leads to the historic town of Bonafacio.  The entrance only visible when you are right on top of it winds it way  i nto this charming, bustling harbour.

Here you will find yourself   neighbours with some of the world's largest superyachts.  Watching ‘‘Cocoa Bean’ mooring at the far end of the harbour with her crew of around 25 was a sight to behold.

Being early June we paid 85€ for our 49 footer which was pretty reasonable   whilst this is likely to be more in the high season i s  worth every euro and  d efinitely not to be missed.

Climb the steep steps up to the old town to experience incredible views where you will find} plenty o f  restaurants and bistro’s offering delicious french cuisine; corsican mussels, wild boar (sanglier) followed by an icecream down at the harbour to finish off the evening nicely.

Bonifacio

Day 6 - Spargi and La Maddelena

The next morning some of the crew walked up to the cliff top again to take one of the nature trails - the left hand fork this time away from the town   rewards you with   unbelievable views of the ocean.

A good day sailing to Isola Spargi, Cala d’Alga; a relaxing lunch onboard and then an afternoon swim ashore.  We were surprised  and  delighted to see a wild boar frollicking on the sands.

We then headed back to La Maddelena to explore this delightful town and have the obligatory team pizza night. It’s worth booking Gavatta Marina ahead of your visit as it is understandably popular, we hadn’t but found a  new ish marina ‘di Punta Nera’  just a short walk over the hill into the main town.

The   marina crew  were very friendly and charged just €60   and the   small bar serving sundowners and snacks was our perfect pre supper Sundowner spot.   For a group meal we can highly recommend the rustic pizzas and jugs of very good house red wine at Il Curciareddhi - simple but delicious and well set up for larger groups.

Spargi and La Maddelena

Day 7 - Back to Portisco

A good day under sail  back to Portisco excellent winds - 8.8 knots made it good fun for all of us . Just a couple of yachts ahead of us on the fuel pontoon then a guide was sent to bring us back to the Boomerang jetty.

Back to Portisco

Day 8 - Farewell

Our return flight was mid afternoon. The lovely Boomerang staff were happy for luggage to be left and we were given directions to the nearest beach, a short stroll over a hill. We whiled away a few hours at the f a bulous beach bar enjoying a leisurely brunch before heading back to say farewell to o ur  great f riends  at the base and jump in our minibus transfer back to Olbia Airport.

 Arrivederci  ( and  A u Revoir! )

Motor yacht charter vs sailing yacht charters in Sardinia

Choosing between a crewed motor yacht and a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences, budget, and the experience you’re seeking.

Motor yachts offer several advantages that appeal to many travellers. They provide greater speed and agility, allowing you to cover more distance along Sardinia’s coastline in less time. With their luxurious amenities, spacious interiors, and onboard chefs, motor yachts offer unparalleled comfort and indulgence. Their stability in choppy waters and ease of handling make them suitable for guests who prioritize a smooth sailing experience or have limited sailing experience.

On the other hand, sailing yachts offer a more authentic and serene sailing experience. With their reliance on wind power rather than engines, sailing yachts provide a quieter and more intimate atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Sardinia’s coastline. They evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance with their classic designs and billowing sails, appealing to travelers seeking an authentic maritime adventure. Additionally, eco-conscious travellers often prefer sailing vessels due to their lower environmental impact and reliance on renewable energy.

Ultimately, choosing a motor yacht or a sailing yacht for your Sardinia adventure depends on your preferences and desired level of comfort. Both options offer their own unique advantages and can provide an unforgettable journey along the breathtaking coastline of Sardinia.

Sardinia is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, a part of the Mediterranean Sea, southwest of the Italian Peninsula and just south of the French island of Corsica. It is an autonomous region of Italy and boasts over 1,850 kilometers (1,150 miles) of coastline, featuring stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs. Sardinia is surrounded by smaller islands and archipelagos, such as the Maddalena Archipelago to the northeast, offering additional exploration and discovery opportunities on your own private yacht charter. These islands often have secluded beaches, hidden caves, and charming villages to explore.

Sardinia’s coastline boasts miles of superlative beaches and secret grottos only accessible by boat. Porto Cervo is at the region’s main center, home to Costa Smeralda. This area has become increasingly desirable for luxury yacht charters because of its remote location and exclusive atmosphere. South of Porto Cervo, you will find forested mountains, medieval villages, and stunning seas. Another recommended site is La Maddalena National Park, a marine reserve that offers opportunities for secluded anchorages and overnight stays. Spotted with seven main islands and many islets, La Maddalena offers crystal-clear waters for an afternoon snorkel and access to the beautiful pink sand beach named Pink of Budelli. Sardinia’s coastal cuisine differs from inland; the seafood base and pasta dishes pay homage to the sea and further contribute to the laidback yet luxurious atmosphere of the island.

When is the best time to go on a Sardinia yacht charter?

The best time to hop on a yacht and explore Sardinia is usually in the summer, from June to September. During this time, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for soaking up the sun and diving into the crystal-clear waters. Remember that summer is popular with yacht charter guests and tourists, so planning ahead and booking early is advisable. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are great options for Charter guests who prefer fewer crowds. You’ll still get lovely weather and plenty of chances to enjoy the island’s beauty without the hustle and bustle of peak season. So, whether you’re aiming for exciting summer adventures or a more relaxed experience, there’s a perfect time for a Sardinia yacht adventure to fit your preferences.

Can I visit other destinations on a Sardinia yacht charter?

Yes, absolutely! One of the great advantages of chartering a yacht in Sardinia is the opportunity to explore other destinations in the Mediterranean. Sardinia’s strategic location in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea makes it an excellent starting point for cruising to nearby islands, coastal towns, and other popular destinations.

The Amalfi Coast

Sail along the west coast of Italy to visit the breathtaking Amalfi Coast , known for its dramatic cliffs, colorful villages, and Mediterranean charm. Explore the picturesque towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, and enjoy the stunning views of the coastline from the deck of your yacht.

More about a Sardinia Charter

A charter in Sardinia, Italy is quite an experience. Sardinia is a universe unto itself. It's an island of Italy, where the local language is incomprehensible to all other Italians. An island with one of Europe 's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Sardinia is completely unique and the perfect place for a yacht charter holiday that mixes excitement with the exotic. During the summer private boats flock to Sardinia. With an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, concentrated from April to September and warm winds off the African continent, the Sardinian climate, can be quite delightful and not quite as hot as other yacht charter areas in the Mediterranean.

You'll find that the Sardinian ports and harbours compare very well with the Mediterranean’s other chic hot spots on the French Riviera or Italian Riviera . Summers tend to attract lovely warm days and crowds of millionaires, supermodels and luxury yachts, especially to the prestigious Yacht Club Costa Smeralda at Porto Cervo , near Olbia .

For those whose interests are a little more adventurous, Sardinia's humble bays and ports will allow you to explore some sheer and stunning terrain. A good start is the Grotte di Nettuno (Neptunes Caves) on the beautiful Capo Caccia to the north.

The Sardinian yachting scene has increased in popularity and gone from strength to strength of late, and the types of luxury charter yachts available are all the main types, including motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever more frequent superyacht charter.

As with other parts of the Mediterranean and Italy, the Sardinian yacht chartering season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season in July and August is the hottest and tends to have lighter winds. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes.

Porto Cervo Costa Smeralda Sardinia Italy

Plain sailing with all the wind you need

Sardinia has a typical Mediterranean climate with three main winds to ensure great conditions for sailing: The powerful Maestrale - from the north down along the west coast, the strong Ponente - offshore west wind breezes through each season, and the warm Scirocco prevailing on the east coast.

Diverse landscape and geography

Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean. The island is 270 km from north to south and 145 km from east to west. It’s 190 km away from the Italian mainland and 12 km from Corsica . It has an interesting geography with mountains over 1,800 m. The rarely seen rain comes mainly in the winter and autumn.

The gorgeous Sardinia marine coastline

There are hundreds of private coves and stunning beaches along the coastline that beckon you to explore and plunge into. Find mysterious solitude in the myriad of hidden bays and large salt-water lagoons and pools.

With a Sardinia yacht charter, you’ll enjoy gorgeous crystal clear turquoise waters varying in all shades from green to blue.See the dramatic rock formations in the north and mesmerizing dunes on the west. Check out the relaxed sophisticated ambiance of the famous Emerald Coast . There are endless opportunities for exploration, relaxation, and pleasure on a Sardinian yacht charter.

Sardinia has a strong environmental ethos

Over 25% of the island's territory is protected - with three national parks – Asinara, Arcipelago di La Maddalena , and Gennargentu . There are also 60 wildlife reserves, 5 W.W.F oases, 25 natural monuments, and a Geomineral Park, preserved by UNESCO. There are many marine reserves and the best way to experience this natural bounty is by boat.

The island has laws prohibiting new building activities near natural and cultural sites. Wind and solar power have increased noticeably in recent years. Carlo Rubbia, Nobelist in physics, is creating an experimental solar/ thermal energy using Jatropha and Colza oils.

Rare native animals and plants

Sardinia is home to the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the Giara horse, the Albino Donkey, the Mouflon, the Sardinian Long-eared Bat, the Sardinian Deer, the Sardinian Fox, the wild boar, and the Maghreb, a skink that can reach 30 cm in length, and the Great Spotted Woodpecker.

The Famous Mediterranean Sardinian Cuisine

Sardines, rock lobster, squid, tuna, scampi, bottarga, and other seafood are predominant in Sardinian cuisine. This is fresh and simple Mediterranean seafood at its best. Also, wild boar and suckling pig are spit-roasted or boiled in bean and vegetable stews, thickened with bread. Your personal chef on your yacht will be able to gather fresh local Sardinia ingredients and create Sardinia inspired cuisine to your taste, as well as any other cooking styles your request.

Rich cultural customs still alive

Sardinians remain enthusiastic warm-hearted hosts. The native language is widely spoken on the island, as well as Italian. Sardinia is home to one of the oldest forms of vocal polyphony, known as Cantu A Tenore, which Frank Zappa and Peter Gabriel have found irresistible.

Sardinian culture is alive and well, and young people are actively involved - with carnival costumes and a unique three reed-cane instrument. Sardinia has produced notable jazz musicians such as Antonello Salis, Marcello Melis, and Paolo Fresu. Goat and sheep rearing are still important for cheese making. Crafts include rugs, jewellery, textile, lacework, basket making, and coral.

Intriguing ancient history with fascinating remnants

Sardinia has a unique heritage dating from 4000 BC - including the Phoenician sailors, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Saracen raiders, Spaniards, and African Berber pirates, famines survived on wild ferns and weeds, kidnappings, and political subversion. Much of this history is apparent from remnants and influences on the coastline and can be seen from your boat. Some of the best sites, however, require a shore trip and you can ask your captain or charter broker to organise this for you. Here are a few fascinating remnants: • Giants' Tombs – at Aiodda near Nurallao-Nuragus and Coddu Vecchiu • Nuraghe – megalithic round tower-fortresses such as at Su Nuraxi di Barumini - a UNESCO World Heritage Site • Castle - 13th century,  at Acquafredda near Siliqua • Necropolis - Anghelu Ruju • Temple - Antas • Romanesque church - of Santa Maria del Regno • Catalan Gothic church - 16th century, at Assemini • Ghost villages and industrial architecture – at Argentiera • Paintings from the 15th century – at Benetutti church • Fascinating cave – at Bonu Ighinu

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo

Sardinia has strong traditions in darts, football, and car racing. Sassari has the Mores Raceway and Cagliari has hosted Formula 3000 racing. Olbia has hosted the Rally d'Italia Sardegna in the FIA World Championship - held on narrow, twisty mountainous roads around the glamorous town of Porto Cervo.

Of course sailing is big here! Cagliari hosts regular international regattas, such the RC44 championship, the Farr 40 World championship, and the Audi MedCup. Several America's Cup contenders have been attracted here, and part of the Louis Vuitton Trophy was held in the Maddalena archipelago in 2010. Porto Pollo is popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers by virtue of a western wind that accelerates between Sardinia and Corsica. In 2005, Aglientu, hosted the Kitesurf World Cup.  Sa Istrumpa, also known as Sardinian Wrestling, is a traditional Sardinian sport, officially recognized by the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Sardinia is perhaps one of the most well-known places for yacht racing and superyacht regattas and the annual sailing events include the Sardinia Cup , The Pendennis Cup , the Dubois Cup , the Superyacht Regatta and more.

Inland transport

The best way to get around on a Sardinia holiday is by sea, on your own bespoke luxury private crewed charter yacht. For those who do venture inland a driver and car can be organised to pick you up from your yacht. Sardinia has a system of dual carriage freeways that connect the main towns and transport infrastructures with a relaxed speed limit of 90 km/h. The secondary inland and mountain roads get narrow with many hairpin turns. With a low population density, the smallest territories are reachable only by car. Trains also connect the whole island.

Your Sardinia yacht charter vacation – with yacht rental or crewed yacht – can take you anywhere around this jewel of the Mediterranean. A wide range of superyachts, luxury yachts, and charter yachts is available to suit your needs.

When is the best time to visit Sardinia on a luxury crewed motor yacht?

The best time to visit Sardinia is during the summer months when you can enjoy wonderfully warm temperatures and sun-drenched days. The shoulder seasons – fall and spring – are also superb times to visit. While the temperatures will likely be a little cooler than in the summer, a key benefit is that Sardinia will be less crowded, providing a more intimate experience.

Average temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August): During the summer months, Sardinia can experience high temperatures, with averages ranging from around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). In July and August, temperatures can sometimes exceed 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) or more.
  • Spring (March to May) and Fall (September to November): During the shoulder seasons, temperatures are milder. Spring temperatures range from around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), while autumn temperatures can be similar. These seasons are often considered pleasant for outdoor activities.
  • Winter (December to February): Winters in Sardinia are relatively mild compared to many other European destinations. Average temperatures during the winter months typically range from 8 to 15 degrees Celsius (46 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit).

Average water temperatures in Sardinia

  • Summer (June to August) : During the summer, the sea around Sardinia is at its warmest, with water temperatures ranging from approximately 22 to 26 degrees Celsius (72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit). This is the ideal time to maximize all your yacht’s tenders and water toys.
  • Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November): In the shoulder seasons, water temperatures are cooler than in summer but still comfortable. Spring temperatures may range from around 15 to 19 degrees Celsius (59 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit), and autumn temperatures can be similar.
  • Winter (December to February) : Winter brings cooler water temperatures, with averages ranging from around 13 to 15 degrees Celsius (55 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit). While it may be too chilly for swimming in winter, the coastal areas remain picturesque, and it’s still possible to use water toys such as kayaks and jet skis to explore Sardinia’s coastline.

No matter what time of year you want to rent a luxury motor boat in Sardinia, Moran Yacht & Ship can help.

How far in advance do I need to book a Sardinia yacht rental?

Sardinia is a popular Italy yacht charter destination, so for the best selection of vessels, you should book as far in advance as possible. However, it’s still possible to book last-minute getaways, as long as you are flexible around the charter vessel and dates. If you want to book a luxury yacht charter in Sardinia, contact the charter experts at Moran Yacht & Ship.

How many crew will there be on my Sardinia yacht charter?

The number of crew members on a luxury yacht charter will differ, and you will typically find more crew the larger the vessel. Generally, the crew on a luxury yacht includes:

  • Captain : Responsible for navigation, safety, and overall management of the yacht.
  • Chef or Cook : Prepares meals and ensures the culinary aspect of your charter is exceptional.
  • Steward(ess) : Attend to guests, handle housekeeping duties, and provide excellent service.
  • Deckhands : Assist with various tasks, including handling ropes, water toys, and general maintenance.

For smaller yachts, expect a crew of around 4 to 5, while the largest superyachts will often boast a crew above 20. The larger the yacht, the more likely you will have specialized crew members, including an engineer, masseuse, personal trainer, sommelier, or dive instructor. Your yacht’s crew is there to enhance your overall experience, providing a high level of service, catering to your needs, and ensuring the safety and smooth operation of the yacht.

Specific crew arrangements can be discussed with your charter broker, and it’s often possible to customize the crew to meet your preferences and requirements.

How many guests can I take with me to Sardinia?

Most yacht charters are limited to a maximum number of 12 guests, even if their cabin figuration means they can technically sleep a higher number of guests. Charter vessels are normally limited to 12 guests due to the additional compliance and regulations they must meet to be able to carry more guests. However, there are charter vessels that can sleep more than 12 guests. Moran Yacht & Ship can help connect you with your ideal vessel, whether you are looking for a refined motor yacht for your immediate family or a mega yacht that can carry a large group of friends. Contact our team today and let us make your Sardinia vacation a reality.

What amenities can I expect aboard my luxury Sardinia yacht charter?

  • Swimming pool, ideal for fitness and enjoying a refreshing dip under the Sardinian sunshine. All yacht pools are heated to just the right temperature, and some boast counter-currents.

  • Voluminous salons and staterooms, including additional staff cabins.

How much does it cost to rent a luxury motor yacht in Sardinia?

The cost of renting a yacht in Sardinia will depend on several factors, including the size of the vessel and the length of your charter holiday in Sardinia. The base charter fee entry point for a luxury yacht charter in Sardinia starts at around US$200,000 per week and rises to in excess of one million for the world’s finest vessels. The base charter fee covers the rental cost of the vessel and the crew, with additional costs including the Advance Provisioning Allowance and VAT. Moran Yacht & Ship has access to the finest yachts for charter in Sardinia, including incredible motor yachts and superyachts by pedigree shipbuilders. Contact our team today and let us connect you with your dream Sardinia yacht for charter.

What is the Advanced Provisioning Allowance?

The Advanced Provisioning Allowance, commonly referred to as APA, is an additional charge applied on top of the base charter rate for Sardinia boat charters. This provision covers various non-fixed expenses, including fuel, mooring fees, and provisioning, such as food and drinks. Your luxury yacht charter broker will assess and determine the anticipated APA costs. This amount is paid in advance, and the Captain utilizes the APA funds to address expenses throughout your luxury yacht charter. Upon completion of the charter, a comprehensive summary of all costs will be provided, and any remaining funds in the APA will be promptly refunded to you. On average, the APA is estimated to be around 10% of the base charter rate.

Luxury Catamarans for Charter in Sardinia

Catamarans turn out to be the first choice for  yacht charters   in Sardinia  for their exceptional stability with dual-hulled support. Besides, catamarans are also designed and created for experiencing magnificence with their expansive decks and huge masts. Thanks to its barely-moving waters, the Mediterranean climate is ideal, while faring in the sea can be hugely satisfying for peace-seeking souls. Go for a bareboat catamaran if you enjoy sailing in privacy.

But pay attention, the coastline around Sardinia is also rocky and uneven at places. Hence, our suggestion for a relaxing voyage in this part of the Mediterranean is to hire a crewed catamaran. It will ensure you do not have to worry about navigating, sailing, or maintaining direction. On the other hand, you can also experience the best of Sardinian food with our seasoned chefs while onboard the yacht, along with a host of luxury assistance from the accompanying crew on your  boat in Sardinia .

Take your chances at some adventure water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling.

The island of Caprera lies in the archipelago of La Maddalena at a distance of 24 nautical miles from the Tavolara Island, making it a suitable next destination to drop anchor. While sailing towards Caprera, you will enjoy northern winds of high intensity throughout the 4-hour trail, making it a delightful Mediterranean experience.

Caprera is more of a national park with exotic flora and fauna to witness. It comprises a group of 63 islands and islets, with only Caprera and Magdalena having human habitation. While getting down, you can catch fine white sand dressed on the beaches with sparkling blue water surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and nature, adding beauty to the exceptional  yacht charter in Sardinia .

Budelli and Bonifacio

Your next anchorage has to be between the three virgin islands of Razzoli, Budelli, and Santa Maria. Don’t forget to look out for the famous pink beach while sailing to your next destination. It offers a sight worth beholding.

After some exploration on the three Virgin Islands, you can head straight to the last one on the list; Bonifacio in Corsica, some 22 nautical miles away. If you avail of our bareboat services, make sure to research well in advance as crossing the Strait of Bonifacio can be a risky affair without expert hands on deck.

Missing out on a swimming experience in the crystal clear Mediterranean waters can be a regret of a lifetime. However, this native land of Napoleon also hosts a spectacular picturesque view. The perfect sunrises and sunsets deserve a night off-shore around these isles while  luxury cruising in Sardinia .

Plan your Mediterranean vacation today. Book from one of our luxury vessels and get set to experience the wonder of a lifetime.

It has a 1.6 million people population while being a popular destination for sailors, skippers, surfers, and adventure water sports enthusiasts. However, numerous reefs and shallow waters around it also means the skippers require expert navigational skills. This unique place offers a welcoming environment with ideal weather all-year-round for  luxury cruising in Sardinia . Sardinia is separated from Corsica by the Strait of Bonifacio while giving a cruiser multiple ports to anchor in between.

Apart from the inland beauty that it offers, a boat rental in Sardinia cannot be complete without a voyage through the smaller islands, reaching up to Corsica. One can opt for a crewed catamaran or sailboat for a week-long luxury charter, dropping anchor at Tavolara Island, Caprera, La Maddalena, Budelli.

What is the best way to enjoy Sardinia in  Italy ? The most exciting and relaxing discovery in Sardinia is definitively by sea. Live the charm and unique atmosphere of  South Italy  aboard a  luxury yacht in Sardinia . As it's called in Italian, Sardegna is, after  Sicily  and before enchanting  Cyprus , the second-largest island in the  Mediterranean Sea . Not-to-be-missed during your  yacht charter in Sardinia  are  Corsica and  the Strait of Bonifacio and Tuscany.

The Sardinian waters are known for their clarity and transparency, comparable to the  Caribbean seas . These landscapes are unique globally, and thanks to well-equipped villages and ports, Sardinia is a strategic destination. Sardinia is known for her much-vaunted  Costa Smeralda , legendary with its beautiful white beaches, golf clubs, and nightlife. On the other hand, if you are not looking for an eccentric vacation and prefer to enjoy nature and silence, Sardinia is also for you. You will find semi-deserted spots and beaches that time forgot, despite their fame.

When you rent a yacht in Sardinia, you have to spend at least one day in  Porto Cervo , the gem of the  Costa Smeralda , the port of the most luxurious superyachts of the Mediterranean—definitely the yop high-end yachts on the planet in the charter season from May to September.

Another must in Sardinia is to cruise aboard your yacht's tender to Neptune's Grotto in Alghero. Wherever you navigate in Sardinia, in the East of the West coasts, in the North and the South, you admire natural spectacles, taste gourmet islander food, and have extraordinary sailing experiences.

Our most popular Italian destination, Sardinia has all the magical ingredients that make a sailing holiday so special; golden sandy beaches, a pristine marine national park, a thriving local culture, great climate, wonderful food & what gives the 'Costa Smeralda' (Emerald Coast) its name - beautifully clear emerald waters. From our base at Portisco you sail the north east of Sardinia, known as the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast), all the way to Santa Teresa Gallura and then across to Bonifacio on the island of Corsica. The craggy shoreline of Sardinia is crammed with sandy inlets or small harbours that have been developed into marinas, however, it is with the archipelago off the main island that Sardinia comes into its own. The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park lies just off the north east coast of Sardinia, and consists of no less than 62 islands and islets.

SeamasterYachting have linked us up to several sailing holidays and none have disappointed. Recent trip to Sardinia on a very reasonably priced boat for nine of us was superb. All good. Love Will and Tim's experience and local tips to get us off to a great start and colour brochure of all the best anchorages. Straightforward, honest guys who pass on value for money and run a professional outfit.Would definitely recommend.

We chartered a 2023 Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 through Seamaster in Olbia, Sardinia. We were offered several suitable boats from two possible locations and chose Olbia for ease of access. This was our sixth charter through Seamaster, they are easy to deal with by phone and email and provide an efficient, reliable and personal service.

We have dealt with Seamaster now on four separate occasions and every single time they have been amazing. Very efficient, dealt with all our enquiries efficiently and the charter companies they use have also all been great, We would highly recommend that anyone looking for a sailing holiday to use Seamaster. We have been dealing with Tim and Will both who have been great

Mrs Anna Hill

Will was always happy to answer all my questions - no matter how silly. And he answered them super quickly too. Gave me great advice on boat and trip ideas. The skippers they have are fantastic - ours was amazing - super friendly / knew the perfect places for us to dock for overnight or random swims - can’t say enough good things about him - Fantastic service all round.

Lisa Sinclair

Brilliant experience with Tim and his team. 3rd booking with them. Always helpful and they give you lots of useful information.Very trustworthy company to deal with.Would highly recommend.

What makes the Sardinia so Special

The La Maddalena National Park

The cornerstone of a sailing holiday in Sardinia is the La Maddalena Marine National Park, an archipelago of 60 islands that lie in Emerald coloured waters ringed by bays of golden sand beaches. Drop anchor in the sandy bottom, snorkel in crystal clear waters, and explore the beaches of uninhabited islands.

 A sailing itinerary of contrasts

During the day, enjoy the serenity, while at night sail into one of the many Italian villages that dot the mainland shores and larger outlying islands. Dine on incredible cuisine, sample of the local culture and to top it off, hope across to Corsica and experience Bonifacio, an experience you’ll remember forever.

 Exclusive Seamaster crew

We’re delighted to have our own professional, friendly English-speaking crew in Sardinia. They speak your language and know exactly what it takes to immerse you in the local culture and geography. They are exclusive to Seamaster and we only hire the best.

 Fantastic modern boats

Our boats in Sardinia are a modern fleet of yachts and catamarans ranging from compact boats to the biggest luxury yachts available. We pride ourselves on ensuring you’re sailing the best possible yacht for your specific requirements, so get in touch today.

  • 1 Week - Sardinia Route (Bonifacio)
  • 2 Week - Whole Corsica & Sardinia Route

Located at the southern end of the famous Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast), Portisco has a natural harbour that is sheltered from the Mediterranean currents and winds by its inland location, resulting in a great starting location for a sailing holiday. There is a small selection of shops and restaurants in the marina.

Hidden along the east coast of Sardinia, this tiny strip of land — just over three miles long and a mile wide — is one of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets. The island has resisted building more houses or hotels to cater for tourists. There is a locally appointed king, one restaurant, one bar and a beach.

This island is a national monument thanks to the famous Italian hero Giuseppe Garibaldi buying it. You can visit his house which is now a museum and is located at Porto Garibaldi. The village itself is typical and with very hospitable locals.

The strait between Bonifacio and Sardinia is one of the windiest locations in the metiterranean due to winds funnelling between the two islands. Note the wind is calmest first thing in the morning. Don’t be put off as on arrival at Bonifacio you’ll be treated to possible the most spectacular natural harbours in the Mediterranean, it’s an absolute must see!

Budelli is famed for its pink sand made from coral which has been smashed by the sea over the years. The island is now heavily protected to ensure it’s preserved for future visitors. You’ll find some fantastic anchorages, especially around the southern part of the island.

Maddalena is the largest island in the archipelago and as you would expect is the busiest. You have a number of choices of ports; Cala Gavetta which is the main port and is a busy tourist town. Alternatively you could choose Cala Mangiavolpe which is east of Cala Gavetta, a little cheaper and with extremely helpful locals. Finally Cala Spalmaore which is a lovely well sheltered beach.

If you didn’t get an opportunity to visit Olbia on your first night then we would recommend taking the time to go. It’s a town often overlooked in the rush to get to the Costa Smeralda and offers more than you might inititally think. There is a historic centre filled with boutiques, wine bars and pizza cafes. The town is well worth making the trip.

Where are our bases?

Our primary base is located at Portisco, 40 minutes north of Olbia. In Portisco, there are actually two marinas side by side Portisco Marina and Cala dei Sardi. We also have yachts located in Cannigione, which is further north of Portisco and so offers a shorter transit to La Maddalena. Finally, there is also a selection of yachts available from Olbia town, which convenient to the airport and puts you in the heart of a lively characterful city.

How to get there?

The best airport for our base in Sardinia is Olbia, in the north east of the island. Olbia airport enjoys direct flights from London, Manchester and Bristol on Saturdays. Our base at Portisco is just 40 minutes north of Olbia airport.

What wind and weather should I expect?

The weather in Sardinia is generally hot and dry, with a six month summer from May to October. Sardinia enjoys 300 days of sunshine, with the most rain falling in the winter months from November to April. During the peak summer, temperatures rise to the early thirties. In May / October temperatures are in the early to mid 20s. Sardinia is a genuine sailing destination, with Force 4 (moderate winds) from the north-north west usual throughout the season and the risk of occasional stronger blows from the west. Stronger wind can become especially concentrated through the Bonifacio Straits between the north of the island and Corsica.

How much are mooring fees?

Mooring fees are a mixed bag in Sardinia and so should be approached with caution. The main Sardinia island marinas and harbours tend to be expensive, particularly Porto Cervo, which you shouldn’t even attempt. Expect to pay around €20 per metre during the summer. Strictly speaking, during peak summer overnight anchoring is not allowed up to 300m from the shore, but this rule though doesn’t seem to be followed strictly.

What qualifications do I need?

Charterers in Italy need a minimum of an RYA Day Skipper. We recommend having an ICC certificate (International Certificate of Competence). If you are in any doubt, please contact Seamaster and we will advised you or even get pre-approval.

YOUR SAILING AREA

Sardinia, italy.

The Gulf of Marinella is renowned for its crystal-clear emerald waters, making it an ideal location to board the luxurious yacht Chronos. Sardinia, an Italian island, is home to almost 2000km of coastline, sandy beaches, and a mountainous interior dotted with thousands of “nuraghi”—mysterious Bronze Age stone ruins dating back to 1500 BC.

The island’s northeast is home to Costa Smeralda, known for its fine-sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise water. Spend some time here on anchor or in one of the quaint Italian harbour towns as you explore ancient burial sites ashore or enjoy beachside relaxation.

Nestled along the coastline, you’ll discover the breathtaking La Maddalena archipelago natural park, where the crystal-clear sea gleams in the most captivating shades of blue. Dive into the warm and inviting waters for a refreshing swim, or wander through the charming and historic cobbled streets while basking in the vibrant Mediterranean culture and the warm, golden sunshine. The stunning views and unforgettable experiences will leave you feeling rejuvenated and inspired. Mediterranean culture and sunshine.

Our final port of call will be the harbour of Bonifacio on the south coast of Corsica, where you will be greeted by the striking and dramatic granite cliff line that surrounds the French harbour town. This lively marina is steeped in history, and its 13th-century medieval citadel overlooks the sea. At every turn, you’ll discover fascinating historical landmarks tucked around every corner. One such landmark is the L’Escalier du Roi d’Aragon , a magnificent staircase carved into the cliff face, comprising of 187 ancient steps. With its stunning views and rich history, Bonifacio is a place that will stay with you forever.

All voyages for Chronos

Guest berths: 26 Rig: Bermudan Ketch

Our luxury sailing yacht Chronos was built and registered in Bodrum, Turkey but spends her days sailing the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Chronos was purpose-built as a charter vessel in 2013, with a two-masted, 54m staysail ketch rig.

Designed by Klaus Röder who based his design on a classic yacht whilst keeping up with the modern-day ketch; Chronos has been built for performance sailing and guest comfort.

Built with luxury in mind, the outline on deck is of teak and mahogany with plenty of space to sun-bath, read a book and enjoy the views. All the sails are electronically retractable, so no need to learn the ropes here. (The crew are, however, more than happy for guests to get involved with the operating and sailing of Chronos as much as they would like!)

An admiralty ladder provides the perfect place to jump off into the warm Caribbean waters, have a swim and climb back aboard with ease. Chronos also offers her guests the options of using her water skiing, wake-board, tube riding, kneeboard, banana boat, kayak and snorkelling & dive equipment and even a sail dinghy (QubaRS)

The deckhouse offers its very own small bar whilst below decks offers still more space to relax with a saloon with a plasma TV! Her private cabins, offering both double and single beds, all have air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.

The professional crew consists of the Skipper, first mate, mechanic, bosun, cook and 4 stewards, so you will most certainly be looked after during your time aboard Chronos .

Life on board

Our sailing holidays on board Chronos are ones of luxury, style and comfort while exploring sunshine destinations and unforgettable locations. A purpose built charter vessel, Chronos was designed with the elegant sailing lines of a traditional classic boat but has been paired with all the comforts and luxuries of a modern yacht.

Authentic Sailing Fun

Sailing with Chronos is certainly one of comfort and relaxation. Think of a boutique, intimate, classic sailing experience where nothing is too much trouble. Her dedicated and professional crew is highly trained and well-versed in smooth sailing operations.

She has an impressive sail area, and her rig is electronically operated with retractable sails, so there is no need to “learn the ropes” here! That being said, there are still traditional pin and tails if guests want to taste authentic sailing. Her crew are always on hand and happy to discuss the sailing operations with guests.

Although there is less focus on the “hands-on” sailing of Chronos , the Captain and crew offer interesting sailing talks and information briefs for guests during the voyage. Learn about the history of the boat and its sailing terms and even take a tour of the engine room if you fancy! Understanding these elegant classic vessels and feeling their power with the wind is truly an unforgettable experience.

Chronos Amalfi coast

Sleeping and Relaxation

All the areas on Chronos are meticulously considered, with guest comfort being the top priority in the design. The boat boasts an abundance of luxurious features, including spacious saloons, private ensuite cabins adorned with tropical wood, and sweeping decks with ample sun lounging areas.

The spacious cabins have ample luggage storage, full-size domestic showers, and air conditioning units. The beds are versatile and can be arranged per the guest’s requirement, whether a double bed, twin sharing, or a three-bed family cabin. The ticket price includes all the bedding and towels per person. Each cabin is named after the winds of the sea and is assigned a matching swim towel set for the guests. If you happen to leave your swim towel on the deck, the crew will return it to your cabin once it is dry.

Daily cabin service is also part of the offering. A crew member will make your bed and freshen up your bathroom every day, and if you want a towel change or a full cabin clean, just leave the relevant sign on the cabin door!

Guests enjoying meal on board SC Chronos Rhea

Eating and Entertainment

Although the day is punctuated by meal times, you certainly don’t feel like you’re running on a schedule. The relaxed nature of both the boat and the crew gives a perfect balance.

Depending on the voyage location, the daily routine can change and is flexible, depending on the wishes of the group. Perhaps sit back and relax as the crew sets sails to another remote anchorage to enjoy a freshly cooked lunch and the onboard water toys! Or spend the morning swimming in a secluded bay or exploring an ancient port city before setting sail to a new location.

Start the day with a rich buffet-style breakfast, on to a light 2-course lunch at noon, and coffee, tea and cake in the afternoon. Finish the day with a freshly cooked 3-course dinner aboard, and on the final night of the voyage, enjoy an authentic Captain’s dinner. For every voyage on Chronos , guests enjoy a meal ashore at their own expense to really immerse themselves in the local culture and cuisine. Guests tend to go off in their groups, but sometimes, the crew can join in if guests are unsure of the best spots!

Depending on the group’s mood, the crew can arrange some light-hearted entertainment, too—from local musicians over dinner to a friendly onboard music quiz (which is always amusing with international guests!) or even a wine-tasting session (at an extra cost).

CHRONOS sailing

For water lovers with a sense of adventure, Chronos offers a multitude of watersport activities and equipment. Stand-up paddleboards and adult-size snorkelling equipment are free for guests to use. Waterskiing, wakeboarding, banana boating, and tube riding are all chargeable once on board.

Chronos offers this at a moderate price and suggests an average of 10% of the voyage price to serve as a guide for consumption. The onboard currency is EUROS, and guests can open an onboard account, which can be paid at the end of their voyage.

Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Sardinia, Italy

We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Sardinia, Italy!

Sardinia yacht and catamaran charter

Sailing from Sardinia

Sardinia is right in the middle of the Mediterranean, but sailing around it can sometimes feel like you're in the Caribbean - everywhere you look there are outstanding white sandy beaches, emerald blue seas, and largely undeveloped coastlines with rugged cliffs and lush vegetation. The nearby Maddalena islands - once a naval base for Lord Admiral Nelson - are now both a nature reserve and a UNESCO world heritage site (and a stunning place to cruise around).

The 'Emerald coast' or Costa Smeralda has long been popular with the glitterati, the rich and famous, which has seen the whole coast flourish with expensive villas, superyachts and luxury goods stores, but the area has been a well kept secret by Italian sailors, who come here en-masse during the peak season. With the fine weather, reliable winds, exciting and tranquil sailing, stunning scenery, and the fact that there is so much to explore, Sardinia really is an exceptional and memorable place to sail. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

6-day Sailing Itinerary from Sardinia

Our bases in the north of Sardinina, in Portisco are Cannigione, are ideal starting points for heading northwards to the Maddalena islands - an area of natural beauty which is now both a nature reserve and a UNESCO world heritage site. The white sandy beaches, turquoise blue seas, rugged cliffs, lush vegetation, and minimal development of the islands means that they are beautiful and tranquil places to sail, with most of the best beaches only reachable by boat - indeed, only two of the 162 Maddalena islands have roads, and only three are inhabited.

Within the islands, the historic town of La Maddelena has a delightful old town to wander and admire, there's rugged granite at Spargi, a famous pink beach on Budelli, and Caprera was once where they imprisoned the Italian General Garibaldi - he liked his prison so much that he returned to the island upon retirement and spent the rest of his days there. The islands are opposite the Costa Smeralda - one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, and which is popular with the rich and famous, many of whom have multi-million pound villas or superyachts here. Porto Cervo is the place to go if you're interested in celeb-spotting or buying luxury designer goods.

Sardinia - 6 day Sailing itinerary

This itinerary covers 112 nautical miles from Portisco (less if you follow this route from Cannigione), with an average of just under 20 nautical miles a day. A yacht can sail at an average of 5-6 knots (nautical miles an hour), which means that you should only need to be doing 4-5 hours of meaningful sailing each day, leaving plenty of time to explore your start or end points in more detail, to take a plunge at some beaches as you sail by, to stop for lunch properly somewhere, and generally to just take things easy at a holiday pace. If you're sailing from Portisco for the week, then the natural choice is to explore the stunning La Maddalena islands. A circumnavigation of the whole island is over 350 nautical miles, so if the plan was to sail around the island in a week, then think again!

Porto Massimo

Our journey today takes us through and into the heart of the Maddalena islands, with a destination of Porto Massimo, which is 17 nautical miles away. From Portisco, head North-east and checking out the gazillion dollar villas and hotels as you bob along the coast to the exclusive town Porto Cervo. Stop for a spot of lunch here and you'll likely see at least a couple A-list celebrities.

Heading North, we'll take the islands on the horizon on our port side, before tucking in to Porto Massimo for the night, which has a small and beautiful marina which their website claims will take your breath away. There's a small town here, a selection of shops, and a very well rated hotel and restaurant. What a place to escape to!

Santa Teresa Gallura

Whilst the finish point is delightful, the highlight of the trip is taking on the Bonifacio strait for the first time. This is a place where the winds are accelerated as they squeeze between the islands of Sardinia and Corsica, which makes for some interesting sailing conditions. In summer, they're usually very passable, and more of a pleasure to sail, whereas in winter, the winds can be so strong as to get dangerous.

Nosing out of Porto Massimo, head north to get beyond La Maddalena island, then it's a case of pointing the nose of the boat pretty much due west, and following the coastline around. Founded by Italian king of kings, Vittorio Emmanuele, in 1808, Santa Teresa is named in honour of one of his wives and is loaded with lavish palaces, fortresses and towers. Its narrow streets now house chic bars, fine dining restaurants, and oustanding places to sit and admire the view.

Isola Rossa

From Santa Teresa Gallura, it's a straightforward south-westerly sail alongside the coast. If the winds are arriving from the Northwest, that's a simple reach across the wind, and you can make the journey in a single tack.

The town of Isola Rossa is actually not an island as the name suggests - it is named after the small island of red granite which sits 500m out to sea from the old town. The area is most famous for the quality of the sea and the vibrant reefs and wildlife which you'll find here: it's supposed to be an exceptional place to snorkel. There's also red granite beaches which look spectacular (but pink), and are given a chilled out vibe by the local surfers. The town itself is only small, but has a good selection of places to eat, and, obviously, has some of the freshest fish imaginable. It is also a great place to watch the sun set.

Bonifacio

We're technically sailing from Italy to France as we head north-east to the southern-most tip of Corsica to a natural marina that has a long and glorious history, but, more importantly, is one of the places that looks even more extraordinary in real-life than it does on the pictures. But keep your camera handy as there are some marvellous shots to be had.

The marina is tucked in-between the cliffs below the cliff-top town. There's been a town in this position since pre-Roman times, and there's an ancient flight of 187 steps which have been cut into the cliff-side to aid the journey from sea to land. It's a pleasant enough hike now, and the views at the top make it worth the effort, but it would be terrible to negotiate the steps with much cargo. Nowadays, there is a tourist train that can save you breaking a sweat, but that would be cheating! Enjoy a night in one of the most memorable marinas in the Med!

La Maddalena

From Bonifacio, we're heading south to nose out of the marina, then south-east, with the wind most likely on our backs, back towards the marine wonderland of the Maddalena Archipalego. If you have time, it's an amazing place to explore, and you don't need to go too far to find your own secluded sun-kissed beach with crystal clear waters. Tonight, our destination is La Maddalena, the capital town of the islands, but that doesn't mean it's a big town.

The Maddalena islands are probably best known for being the training ground for a certain Napoleon Bonaparte - indeed, the first place that the Corsican tried to conquer was the island of Maddalena itself, but he was unsuccesful, and the islands would go on to become the base for Horatio Nelson to lead the rest of Europe against France. The island of Caprera is almost as well-known for being the prison for Giuseppe Garibaldi, who was central to the unification of Italy. He was actually imprisoned in the archipalego, but liked the islands so much that, upon his release, he bought a plot of land here and stayed here happily for the rest of his days.

Portisco

It's not the end just yet, though, and we still have a day of sailing to do. There's only 17 nautical miles back to Portisco, so you can afford to take your time exploring the myriad islands, bays and beaches of the archipelago, or heading to sail closer to the Costa Smeralda to take in the most exclusive coast-line in the World. Once you've had your fill, you need to head south and follow the coats back past Porto Cervo and on to Portisco. On entry, you'll need to refuel the boat (there's a fuel berth on the breakwater - you can't miss it!), before taking the boat back to where you found it a week ago... There should be someone there to help you moor up.

Later, someoneo will come and check the boat is still in one piece, but the full check-out is bright and early tomorrow morning, before you disembark, and wave farewell to your trusty boat. If you haven’t yet visited Portisco town then it is worth a visit, and you should find a number of fellow sailors there tonight who you can impress with tales of your voyage.

And eventually, you'll be on your way home. Hopefully you’ve had a truly memorable week in the sunshine, and are leaving with even better friends than you arrived with. If it's a really good crew, you'll already be starting to think about planning another sailing adventure together! Have a safe flight, and thanks for sailing with us! We hope to see you soon!

Sailing Conditions

Italy Sailing - Wind Conditions

The wind is strongest at the Bonifacio strait, where the wind gets funneled between Sardinia and Corsica, but usually not so strong as to put you off heading to to check out mystical Bonifacio. There are also occasional days where the Mistral winds blow over from Saint Tropez with a little more force in the height of August, but usually only for a couple of days, and usually it is manageable with a reef or two in your sails.

If you're sailing in winter, then be sure to check the weather forecasts before setting sail - the winds can change quickly and dramatically, and can arrive from almost any direction, though, contrary to summer, it most usually arrives from an Eastern direction.

Sardinia - Average Temperature

Marina Cala dei Sardi, Portisco

The Marina 'Cala dei Sardi' is a purpose built marina located within easy walking distance of Portisco, on the Emerald coast.  As well as all the usuals of water, fuel, electricity, free wifi, and waste disposal, the marina also has it's own pizzeria, restaurant, bar and mini-market.

You'll normally charter a boat from Saturday to Saturday. If flights aren't available to match, then you might need to spend a night or two on dry land at the start or the end of your holiday. Here's where we head to in the area: Hotel Le Sirene , Hotel Il Timone or Colonna Hotel if you want to spoil yourselves!

Marina Cala dei Sardi, Portisco

Cannigione Marina is based to the north of the pretty village of Cannigione, 35 minutes north of Olbia and within line of sight of the beautiful Maddalena islands. There's a restaurant, supermarket or mini-market, parking, electricity, fuel, and toilet facilities - plus plenty of facilities in the village - and it's a pleasant place to start and end your holiday.

Charters are usually Saturday to Saturday - if flights aren't available to match that itinerary, then you could spend a day or two on land before or after your charter. Here's where we head to in the area (these are also the only hotels within walking distance to the marina, but there are plenty of holiday apartments): Hotel Baja or Blu Hotel Marisco Village .

The 6-day itinerary above is for sailing from our main base in Sardinia (Portisco, which is nearby) - but you can easily follow the same itinerary sailing from Cannigione.

The Marina di Portisco is right in the heart of the town, giving great access to shops, bars and restaurants, and also comes with free wifi!

A week exploring Sardinia: The best 7-day yacht charter itinerary

By Richard Watkins   Last Updated: 11 February 2022

The Italian island of Sardinia is one of the most inviting and rewarding destinations in the Mediterranean for superyachts. Discover how to make the most out of a Sardinia yacht charter with our 7-day itinerary.

From chic 5-star resorts to wild and remote coastlines dotted with secluded beaches, Sardinia offers a beguiling variety of landscapes and ports of call.

With so much to fit in, take a look at this 7-day Sardinia yacht charter itinerary , which combines everything there is to love about this beautiful island.

Day 1 - Explore the elegant resort of Porto Rotondo

Although not as well known as its Costa Smeralda neighbor, Porto Cervo , the resort of Porto Rotondo is an attractive destination with a well-equipped marina. Set on a crescent-shaped bay, it offers a more peaceful and laid-back introduction to Sardinia.

If you simply want to relax before you begin your luxury Sardinia yacht charter vacation , there are a number of fine beaches nearby. One such beach is Punta Volpe, a curve of soft golden sand which is a particularly good spot for snorkeling. Another good option is Rudargia, a smaller white sandy beach backed by wild Mediterranean vegetation.

If you want to stay on shore for dinner, try Ristorante Deste, which serves a menu of Italian seafood and an excellent selection of wines with fine sea views.

Day 2 - Relax on the idyllic beaches of the Gulf or Orosei

Cruising southwards along the east coast of Sardinia, you will reach the spectacular Gulf of Orosei, speckled with hidden coves and isolated beaches. The best of these is Cala Luna, known locally as Spiaggia di Cala Luna, an inviting crescent of powdery white sand backed by high sea cliffs and fringed with wild pink oleanders.

yacht holiday sardinia

Remote and difficult to reach from land, Cala Luna is best approached by sea, making it an ideal stopover for those exploring the coast on a private yacht charter. The beach is warm and sheltered by the surrounding cliffs, and this is also a great place for snorkeling.

If you want to spend more time in the area, the Bue Marino Caves, with their remarkable stalactites and stalagmites, are just 3km away to the north, while Cala Mariolu, named one of Italy's most beautiful beaches, lies to the south. The sea, which changes in hue from pale blue to deep emerald green, is particularly clear here, making Cala Mariolu a perfect location for scuba diving.

Day 3 - Discover the historic city of Cagliari

Rounding the southern coast of Sardinia, it's time to visit the island's capital, Cagliari . An ancient settlement dating back thousands of years, Cagliari was occupied by a succession of empires, from Carthage and Rome to Aragon and Savoy, who all left their mark.

yacht holiday sardinia

Wander through the historic Castello - the Old Town - and discover the 14th-century Torre dell'Elefante (Tower of the Elephant), the striking cathedral and the grand neoclassical Bastione di Saint Remy which offers wonderful views over the city.

If you're staying ashore for dinner, try Niu, a friendly and informal restaurant housed in a former monastery, which offers a menu of classic Sardinian specialties.

Day 4 - Experience the wild beauty of southwest Sardinia

Following the coast westwards today, you will cruise past the island of Sant'Antioco, which has many attractive beaches, such as the sand and pebble beach at Maladroxia, popular with scuba divers. Just inland, the Nuragic site of S'Ega de Marteddu is worth a look for those interested in archaeology.

yacht holiday sardinia

Heading north you'll reach the wild Costa Verde, a paradise for surfers, with long, secluded sandy beaches and high waves, while inland there are fascinating ancient monuments to explore such as the Roman Temple of Antas at Fluminimaggiore. Those with more time can discover the UNESCO-listed remains of Su Nuraxi, an impressive megalithic settlement dating back to the 17th century BC.

Day 5 - Enjoy a wander through Alghero

Seascape of Alghero, with old battlements by the sea

Continuing north along the western coast of Sardinia, you will reach Alghero , a city with a distinct Catalan character. Take time to explore the Old Town, with its cobbled lanes, squares and medieval churches, and stop for lunch at Al Tuguri to sample the city's famous Catalan-inspired cuisine.

One sight not to miss while you are here is the breathtaking Grotta di Nettuno - Neptune's Grotto - in the nearby rocky headland of Capo Caccia. One of the largest marine caves in Italy , it is renowned for its remarkably beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It is an easy day excursion from Alghero and a highlight of any Sardinia yacht charter vacation.

Day 6 - Cruise through the spectacular La Maddalena islands

Lying off the northern tip of Sardinia, La Maddalena is the main island in a beautiful and unspoiled archipelago, said to be one of the best-kept secrets in the Mediterranean and home to some of Italy's best beaches and clearest waters.

yacht holiday sardinia

Explore the islands on your yacht and you will find plenty of secluded beaches where you can come ashore to relax, have a picnic and enjoy the natural beauty of these special islands.

Try Cala Corsara, a series of four sandy beaches on the tiny island of Spargi, separated by rocky outcrops and surrounded by typical Mediterranean vegetation. This area is a protected national park, with clear water and rich marine life, making it an excellent place for diving.

Day 7 - Enjoy a party in Porto Cervo

On your final day, cruise into Porto Cervo , the 'capital' of Costa Smeralda and one of the most popular destinations for Mediterranean yacht charters . A favorite of the international Jet Set, Porto Cervo is a sophisticated and exciting resort with so much going on.

While you're here, pay a visit to the legendary Hotel Cala di Volpe for cocktails on the terrace overlooking the sea, and then head to dinner at one of the property's highly regarded restaurants. Anchor your yacht nearby and take a tender into Cala di Volpe's private moorings.

yacht holiday sardinia

For the very best seafood with glorious views of the bay, head to Quattro Passi al Pescatore, the oldest, and still one of the best restaurants in Porto Cervo. Afterward, celebrate the conclusion of your Sardinia yacht charter vacation in style and party with the A-Listers at Billionaire Club.

Before leaving this beautiful island behind, be sure to head to Petra Segreta, a tranquil 5-star resort in the hills south of Porto Cervo, and enjoy a relaxing massage in the Balinese-style spa.

Flotilla map

Sailing corsica & sardinia.

Sardinia is famous for its chic residents, equally as chic visitors, stunning scenery and delicious food. The beauty of having two weeks in this area is that you can easily visit nearby Corsica. Our route takes you through some of Sardinia and Corsica's hidden gems. Enjoy tranquil turquoise blue bays, rustic coastlines and authentic eateries.

Corsica and Sardinia is not just coastal sailing. To the north east tip you'll find the La Maddalena Islands; with beautiful beaches and clear waters. The whole area is a natural marine park famed for it's pink beaches and spectacular scenery. The wind isn't half bad either!

What's the weather like?

Sardinia is an area for an experienced crew with a powerful West to North Westerly blasting along the West coast. A South to South Easterly prevails along the East coast. We wouldn’t recommend this sailing to complete beginners unless you go for a skippered charter holiday.

Typical Itinerary & Highlights

Days 1 - 2, arriving at portisco.

Once you've arrived at Portiisco, just a short transfer from the airport, you'll be met by the base staff. They will help you check in before a comprehensive boat briefing after which you're free to relax and start your holiday! We suggest an well-earned waterside beer after a long days travelling.

On your first day, we recommend easing into things with a nice short sail down the coastline, to Marinella.  Here you'll find a great beach where you can do diving and watersports.

Portisco

Days 3 - 5, Exploring the Sardinian sights

From Marinella a it is a good sail is over to the island of Tavolara. It's quite a spectacular sight to see. From the sea the island looks like a huge limestone rock rising up out of the sea. There are some lovely beaches and ports here to moor up in. Due to its beauty there are restrictions on development maintaining it as an untouched gem.

From Tavolara a short sail back to the mainland takes you to the Golf Aranci. This gulf's name comes from the crabs that are found in the area and there are some stunning beaches to explore where you can go scuba diving. As well as this, the enchanting Cala Moresca pine forest which is a short walk from the port is worth exploring and if you have time the remains of the Sacred Well of Milis is also worth a look.

From Golf Aranci why not then head up to the Maddalena Islands, this is around a 20-25mile sail and on the way you'll see some stunning Sardinian coastline.

Tavolara Island, Sardinia

Days 6 - 9, Meandering around the Maddalena Islands

The Maddalena Islands are the main attraction for the Sardinian sailors and it's not hard to see why. With their untouched beauty clear to see we suggest you stop at a few of the islands here on the west side of the archipelago.

Starting at Spiaggi I due Mare which can be found on the island of Caprera, one of the southernmost islands in the group. This is a great starting point from the Sardinian mainland and here you'll find a unique beach that has sea on two sides and therefore is named the beach of two seas. The waters vary from emerald green to clear blue depending on the time of day.

Following on from Caprera head north to Spalmatore. The beach here is the main attraction with pink rocks surrounding it and lovely white sand in between.

From Spalmatore a short hop further north to Santa Maria is a great next days sail. The old town here is lined with olive trees and contrasts starkly to the modern marina which was only built in 1998. The porphyry rocks here that surround the beach are quite stunning due to their orangey red shade.

Santa Maria

Days 10 - 12, Cruise over to Corsica

From the picturesque Maddalena islands if you fancy it why not make the sail up to Corsica and explore some of the french influences that the island has to offer.

It's about a 25-30 mile sail to Porto Vecchio from the Maddalena Islands and its well worth the trip. Porto Vecchio is known as the St Tropez of Corsica and with its vibrant cafes, designer boutiques and well-equipped marina we can see why. This town manages to mix both idyllic unspoilt beaches with its breathtaking mountainous backdrop.

Once you've had your fill of chic Porto Vecchio sail south down to Bonifacio. This town is right on the southern tip of Corsica and here you can sit back and relax in a cafe listening to the french speaking locals as they pass by you. You might also know this place due to it being the setting for the famous film V for Vendetta.

Bonifacio Castle

Days 11 - 13, A whistle stop tour of the western Maddalena Islands

From the french towns of Corsica you can head back south to Sardinia and explore the western islands in the Maddalena archipelago, starting in Spargi.

Spargi is is part of the Maddalena National Park and there are lots of protected species of birds here that live amongst the vegetation. There are also some remains of Roman shipwrecks to explore in the Maritime Museum there.

After Spargi a nice short sail is to Palau on the mainland. Palau is one of the most noteworthy seaside towns on the Emerald Coast. Its artistic looking coastlines are shaped by the wind and perhaps the most famous part of the coastline is the dell'Orso which is a rock that looks very similar to a bear, quite a sight! Palau is also a mecca for watersports, from windsurfing to diving you can do it all here.

After Palau why not pop back over to the Maddalena islands one last time and head to Maddalena itself. The town here is buzzing with activities and nightlife but there are also plenty of quiet corners of the island you can discover too.

Porto Cervo Beach and Superyachts in Sardinia

Days 14 - 15, A pit stop in Porto Cervo

Porto Cervo has to be your last stop before heading back to Portisco. The town attracts celebrities by the bucket full in summer with their super yachts visibly anchored out from the harbour. If it's exclusive champagne bars and designer boutiques you're after then Porto Cervo is a great stop, and don't worry you can still find some reasonably priced places to eat and drink mixed in with the garages filled with Rolls Royces and the Harrods boutique!

After Porto Cervo it's time to head back to base, the sail back to Portisco is a lovely last sail and not a long one at that. Most charter companies expect you to be back in the marina between 4-6pm giving you one last evening to enjoy a true Sardinian feast!

The hiker who was found dead on the Italian island of Sardinia has been named locally.

Originally from Kilkenny, John Bergin, aged 39, had been reported missing by his family last Thursday while on a holiday with his siblings, after failing to return from a hike.

Following an extensive search, his body was found on Sunday near the Sa Roc ca Niedda canal.

Mr Bergin and his family had been hiking the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, a trail which runs along the coastline, between the towns of Masua and Cala Domestica.

In a statement shared by the funeral home La Ginestra, his family thanked the Emergency services, the helicopter pilots, drone operations, firefighters, the Carabinieri (Italian national police force), as well as the Irish Embassy and all of those who helped.

“…They found our brother John and took care of him, we also thank the La Ginestra funeral home. We will be forever grateful for the support and love that the Sardinians have shown us in the last days,” they said.
