Centerport Yacht Club Let's Take A Veteran Sailing

In 2015 SailAhead met with the Centerport Yacht Club team to see if we could work together to create an event to take veterans sailing. In a powerful partnership showcasing community support and solidarity with America's veterans, SailAhead and the Centerport Yacht Club have brought over 500 veterans and their family members sailing!

The event is SailAhead's largest. Over the years it has adapted and changed to include participation from many groups, including the American Legion Post 1244 Riders, dozens of homeless veterans, Marine Corps Colour Guards, volunteers from the US Merchant Marine Academy, charity bands, the families of Our Mates,  a helicopter from the Suffolk County PD, and a friendly neighborhood helicopter that flies over to take pictures!

Cooperation and leadership from the Centerport Yacht Club team has been essential in touching the lives of hundreds of veterans and community volunteers! We cannot express the true depth of our gratitude for their vital role in accomplishing our mission! We also give thanks to all of the skippers and crew, some who come from neighboring states to participate with their boats.

43rd annual vanderbilt cup regatta coming to long island sound, the race will be followed by a benefit party featuring drinks, a buffet, live music, and dancing..

CENTERPORT, NY — The 43rd annual Vanderbilt Cup Regatta is scheduled for Sept. 30, the Centerport Yacht Club announced.

The Long Island Sound regatta, steeped in tradition, offers a finish line in sight of the museum. The afterparty will be set in the beautiful courtyard of the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site.

Boaters can register for the regatta here . The race entry is $135. The fee includes after-race party tickets for the skipper and four crew (additional crew at $35 per person). All skippers will receive a "swag bag" filled with goodies.

The after-race benefit party, scheduled for 5 to 9 p.m., is open to all. To purchase party tickets, go here . Party only tickets are $45 when purchased in advance or $50 at the door. It includes an adult beverage, buffet, live music and dancing, courtesy of the Crisis Classic Rock LI Band, and a night of fun. Local businesses will be showcasing their products through donations, raffles and a silent auction, and a 50/50 and raffle tickets will be available throughout the night.

Crews battle boat fire at Rochester Yacht Club

Crews investigating boat fire at the rochester yacht club.

IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — A boat fire at the Rochester Yacht Club is under investigation. Firefighters say a large yacht caught on fire.

They believe the fire started in the engine compartment. 

When fire crews got there, much of the boat was already up in flames. According to firefighters, dealing with boat fires can be a serious challenge. 

“These boat fires tend to be a lot hotter and more violent,” explains Chief Ken Stavalone with the St. Paul Boulevard Fire Association. “It’s important to get a lot of water on it real quick.”

Luckily, no one was on the boat at the time.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it spread to other boats.

Boat catches fire at Rochester Yacht Club

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Irondequoit Fire Department is investigating a boat fire at the Rochester Yacht Club.

Light smoke could be seen coming from the area where the boats are. Fire crews said a 45′ yacht caught fire. The vessel was unoccupied, and no one was injured.

The back of the boat appears to have sustained some damage, but the extent of the damages is unclear at this time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
