La Datcha: The 77m bronzed explorer built for heli-skiing adventures

Designed for the paths less travelled yet still glamorous to its core, 77 metre La Datcha is as unconventional as superyachts come. BOAT discovers its many charms .

The Russian word datcha means “a second home in the countryside”. The French definite article la adds a touch of elegance. La Datcha certainly seems a fitting name for this 77-metre from Damen Yachting’s new SeaXplorer range , a boat sophisticated enough for Mediterranean bays but built for adventure in faraway places.

  • On board SeaXplorer 77 expedition yacht La Datcha on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula

From day one her owner, Oleg Tinkov , made it clear that although he intends to spend time on board, he wants La Datcha to generate revenue. Tinkov is a self-made man known for building several brands, including his greatest pride, the online Tinkoff Bank. His La Datcha Tinkoff Collection comprises luxury boutique hotels with a sports theme, ranging from ski chalets in Val Thorens and Courchevel in the French Alps, to villas in Cabo San Lucas in Baja California (ideal for offshore fishing and watersports). This ultra-luxurious explorer yacht is the latest addition to the portfolio and is being offered for charter in remote areas such as Kamchatka in the far east of Russia, Antarctica and Papua New Guinea.

Born in a coal-mining town in south Siberia, Tinkov, who currently resides in London, lived for a time in the US and studied at the University of California, Berkeley. He has travelled the world extensively, from Madagascar to Greenland. Likewise, his yachting experience is diverse – from a Pershing he uses to entertain guests of the La Datcha palazzo in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, to superyacht charters in the Seychelles and Maldives.

“Once we even rented an ice-breaker,” says his daughter, Dasha Tinkova, marketing and sales director of La Datcha Tinkoff Collection. With a passion for extreme sports, Tinkov is a devoted heli-skier. Having explored the Alps, he started to look for other destinations and soon realised that the best way to get to places such as Kamchatka or Alaska would be aboard a superyacht. But what kind of superyacht?

“Oleg Tinkov had considered buying a yacht for some time and was attracted by the clean vertical lines of the Amels 199 [now the Amels 206 ] Limited Editions design, with its axe-bow,” recalls Rose Damen, managing director at Damen Yachting, parent company to Amels. “But once he saw the SeaXplorer concept, his eyes turned to that design.”

Born at the onset of the explorer yacht boom, the SeaXplorer concept was designed for remote adventures. The first hull, 62-metre Anawa , launched in October 2019. “We had taken the new IMO Polar Code and Ice Class into consideration when developing the SeaXplorer,” says Damen. It therefore has retractable stabilisers and a strengthened hull to withstand drifting ice floes and submerged logs, while enclosed bridge wings offer panoramic visibility and protection for watchkeepers in bad weather.

While Tinkov was drawn to a 65-metre iteration of the SeaXplorer design, he soon realised it could carry only one helicopter, which was not sufficient for his plans. Stefano Feltrin is managing director of La Datcha and the technical supervisor who oversaw the explorer’s design and construction. He explains their requirements thus: “As we will operate outside the range of rescue services, we will need the ability to fly two helicopters simultaneously for safety reasons; while in Antarctica, regulations require two choppers for heli-skiing or heli-safari. So we went for a 72 metre. This was later extended to 77 metres to allow for a full range of watersports, including a dive centre and submarine operations.”

This is a vital aspect of La Datcha : as well as being able to get to remote destinations, her treasure trove of tenders and toys will allow guests to thoroughly enjoy themselves when they arrive. To this end, an important feature is the 9.26-metre custom rescue boat/limousine tender, built by Fassmer, which, when mounted in its open bay on the mothership, completes the exterior perfectly. Designed to the owner’s brief, it follows La Datcha closely in both style and colour.

To accommodate such accessories for exploration, the traditional superyacht layout was significantly revised. The whole of the main deck aft is an enclosed and purely functional working area devoted to a garage for a 9.1-metre RIB tender by Insider Yachts, launched through a shell door, and for two Airbus H125 helicopters that are raised by a lift to the fully certified open flight deck on the upper deck aft. This arrangement allows crew to launch tenders and quickly prepare helicopters for flight. Refuelling is done from a tank carrying approximately 10,000 litres of jet fuel, which equates to approximately 40 hours’ flight time or a 5,000-nautical-mile range.

“The remote nature of these cruising areas with their lack of shoreside infrastructure, means the yacht needs to be comfortable and self-sufficient for extended periods. This philosophy extends to all aspects of the design, from spaces for the owner and guests, to being able to carry all the equipment and supplies you may need to use the yacht as a launchpad for adventure,” says Rob McCallum of EYOS Expeditions, which was chosen by Damen Yachting as a partner in the development of the SeaXplorer range. Having completed more than 1,500 expeditions in remote areas in the last 20 years, EYOS was integral in proposing and realising up to 155 design features to ensure every SeaXplorer, including La Datcha , is a truly capable vessel.

The challenge for La Datcha’s designers, Azure , was to make this potentially brawny vessel look dynamic, yacht-like and well proportioned. The initial brief from Damen Yachting at the inception of the SeaXplorer design was to create “a powerful, head-turning hybrid that merged the strength and heritage of the Damen Sea Axe hull and lines with the traditional beauty of an Amels,” says Erik Spek, director of Azure, “while making her clearly recognisable as part of the Damen Yachting fleet.” Azure drew inspiration from the play of light and shadow on the jagged edges of polar ice shelves.

Inside, La Datcha has six decks and, helped by her 14-metre beam, boasts an impressive volume of 2,560GT. The central part of the upper deck contains the main saloon and an inside/outside dining saloon with an adjacent pantry. The bridge deck also hosts a saloon, with another dining area. Guest cabins are divided between the forward sections of both main and upper decks, with the master suite foremost on the main deck.

The lower deck aft hosts a wellness centre with spa and gym, while forward on this deck are 10 twin-bunked cabins for officers and crew and three twin-bunk cabins for expedition staff. The hospital, a formality required by class, includes full quarantine facilities and dedicated air-conditioning and sewage systems.

Perhaps the most striking feature of La Datcha is the enclosed observation lounge in the nose of the bow on the upper deck, with a 270-degree panoramic view and adjacent open deck from where guests may enjoy the scenery. This area was designed so that those on watch can see forward and operate the vessel safely, while guests also benefit from superb views.

The core idea of La Datcha’s design is to catch every magic moment of natural beauty and wildlife. Wherever guests are, they can get their gear together easily, ready for adventure. The layout allows simple movement throughout, up to the observation lounge or down to the tender bay. On their way to and from adventures, guests need a place to don and doff protective gear that has got wet or dirty. And this is the purpose of the spacious mudroom located on the main deck aft, where expedition gear is cleaned, dried and stored, ready for the next outing (the room also serves as storage for the heli-ski gear).

But while she’s an explorer through and through, La Datcha is also a genuinely luxurious yacht. The owner wanted the interior to be simple and natural but chic and unusual at the same time. His chosen interior designer, Vasiliy Shprits, and his team from St Petersburg, Russia, had never designed a yacht but the owner did not want the interior of La Datcha to look “yachty”. “My goal was to make the interior look like a luxurious land-based residence,” says Shprits. “Not too much fixed furniture or smooth edges. No polished surfaces, no gold, no Swarovski crystals. Instead, some nice loose furniture, natural oak, leather, bronze, natural marble and onyx, stone mosaics or wool rugs.

“We are really grateful to our knowledgeable German interior subcontractor, Vedder, who guided us kindly and wisely throughout the interior design and who has done the impossible,” he adds. “For instance, by finding a way to produce an incredible iceberg-looking bar for the main saloon or invisibly fixing bronze insects [he calls them “termites”] over the bedheads in the second master cabin according to our vision of bringing ‘wildlife’ aboard, or allowing us to place a distinctive bronze sculpture by Giò Pomodoro in the observation lounge.” Promemoria, meanwhile, produced much spectacular furniture for the design.

The interior palette is subtle, not flashy. The main deck and lower deck decor revolves around a water theme while the upper deck is devoted to earth. Jellyfish-shaped lamps from Wired Custom Lighting in the gym and coffee tables with silver fish in the master cabins play out the water theme beautifully. The pattern of decorative panels in the main saloon may appear traditionally Russian to some, but for others it will evoke a Mexican vibe. The theme of fire, particularly important to the owner, is reflected in the stunning bronze hull paint and the fireplaces in the upper deck saloon.

There’s also an egalitarian aspect to the interior. The layout accommodates two similar master suites as well as a VIP suite, plus three guest cabins on the upper deck – a layout that allows the owner to offer equal accommodation when inviting two business partners or friends. A 2.2-metre ceiling height, meanwhile, gives the cabins an exceptionally spacious feeling.

Of course, a true expedition yacht is unthinkable without a spa and wellness centre. On La Datcha it offers direct access to the beach club and the fully equipped gym. A traditional hammam and Finnish sauna made by the German spa specialist Klafs are supplemented by an LED-lit stalagmite ice fountain that allows guests to enjoy the contrast of cold ice on hot skin after a sauna. “Unlike conventional ice fountains, this one grows upwards and it is a truly delightful attraction, especially with changing LED background lighting,” says Martin Schaidnagl, the responsible project manager at Vedder.

All these features have already attracted lots of interest. “Can you imagine, La Datcha is already booked for 18 consecutive weeks,” says the owner with obvious pleasure. “It is a record in the superyacht industry, and we are really proud of it.” Victoria Verhovskaia, charter fleet manager at Edmiston , who is responsible for La Datcha’s charter bookings, says part of the interest stems from the unconventional itinerary. That included the Kamchatka Peninsula in spring and summer 2021. From September to May, Kamchatka is covered with powder snow from Siberia, making it perfect for heli-skiing, but after the snow melts, the area’s 160 volcanoes and the Valley of Geysers, impossible to reach without helicopters, are also great to explore.

“We already hired the best heli-ski and local guides to serve our guests,” says Alistair Reid, captain of La Datcha . Looking to the future, the yacht is heading for Antarctica in the second half of 2021, returning to Kamchatka in 2022, and stopping off to cruise in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands on the way back north. “There is a new generation of adventurous yacht owners that are keen to maximise their experiences, exploring some of the most remote regions on Earth,” says McCallum. “It is great to see La Datcha’s owner embrace this spirit of exploration and really use his yacht for the adventures she was designed to make.” And it’s not just Tinkov who’ll appreciate her: La Datcha will appeal to all who seek luxurious adventure – ice fountain and ice bar included.

Damen launches 'La Datcha' SeaXplorer 77

At an event held in galati, the 77m hull was launched ahead of her outfitting in the netherlands….

On 4 June, Dutch superyacht builders Amels and Damen celebrated the hull launch of La Datcha SeaXplorer, following her construction on the Danube river. The 77m expedition yacht’s owner attended the launch with his family at Damen Shipyard’s facility in Galati. This summer, the SeaXplorer will be transported to The Netherlands for outfitting ahead of her projected delivery in September 2020, in time for the yacht’s debut at Monaco Yacht Show.

“The Earth is so big and our life is so short, so we have to explore as much as we can,” commented La Datcha’s owner. “And the SeaXplorer project is just perfect. I fell in love with the shape, the design. Don’t forget that this is the one yacht with two helicopters, so you can really go further into the mainland. You can see the bears. You can see the animals. You can heliski. Any kind of activities, fishing and so on. With two helicopters you have absolute freedom to explore and remote territory as deep as you want.”

La Datcha is based on the SeaXplorer yacht design with a series of extensive customisations that bring her in line with the owner’s specific requirements, including his passion for heliskiing. She has a helideck and hangar that accommodate two aircraft and is fully certified for helicopters up to 4,000kg. La Datcha carries enough provisions to sustain 40 days of autonomy without the need to call at a port, as well as a number of tenders, toys, snowmobiles and a submarine.

“I’ll be really excited to have this boat the first time in the Kuril Islands and then Kamchatka in 2021,” continues the owner. “That’s a real excitement because I’ve explored Kamchatka quite well with the helicopter, but it would be quite nice to explore it from the shore, more remote territories and see the far east of Russia and the continue on to Alaska. From there, we can go on and do so many things.”

La Datcha has a volume of 2,560 gross tons and can accommodate 12 guests, including two master suites, together with 25 crew. The yacht’s exterior design is penned by Azure Yacht Design, while the interior is by the owner’s own choice of designer, Vasiliy Shprits and his studio, which has worked on a number of the owner’s residential properties.

“The owner has a lot of energy and ideas that went into the design of La Datcha,” comments Rose Damen, managing director of Amels and Damen. “This is the largest and most capable SeaXplorer so far, custom built to the owner’s requirements. There is no other yacht like it in the world. We’re very proud to be building her and can’t wait to see La Datcha exploring the world.

la datcha yacht helicopter

“When La Datcha is delivered next year, I’m sure she will transform the way people thing about high-end explorer yachting. There’s so much more of the world to explore and have the most amazing adventures and there’s no better yacht to do it with than La Datcha SeaXplorer 77.”

In The Superyacht Migration Report , which will be hitting desks at the end of this month, Georgia Boscawen will be exploring the difference between ‘explorer’ vessels and genuine expedition vessels, such as the SeaXplorer, in an article called ‘Superyachts in disguise’. The Superyacht Migration Report will explore whether or not the anecdotal evidence that superyachts are going further afield matches up to the facts thanks to an exclusive partnership with MarineTraffic. LA DATCHA’s launch marks the start of the final stages of her build process before she heads on an unrivalled global charter itinerary which is set to include heli-skiing in Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands and dive adventures off Papua New Guinea. This a yacht built for adventure – custom designed to explore the world’s far-reaching destinations without compromising on luxury. LA DATCHA is the second yacht from the Damen Yachting SeaXplorer range, the first of which was completed earlier this year. LA DATCHA features naval architecture completed by Damen Yachting’s inhouse design team and exterior lines by Azure Yacht Design. Key onboard features include the dual heli set up complete with a fully certified primary helideck as well as a standby deck for a second helicopter and a below-deck hangar which can accommodate both helicopters for safe stowage. The SeaXplorer 77 is available for charter under the LA DATCHA Tinkoff Collection Label. Before her first charter in the Mediterranean Sea in October on her way to the Indian Ocean for the winter of 2020/2021 charter season, LA DATCHA’s worldwide charter preview will be at the Amels and Damen Yachting Private View event taking place in Vlissingen at the Damen Yachting yard in the south of the Netherlands from 17-19 September. During this exclusive invitation-only event, charter and new build clients will enjoy the first look.

The SeaXplorer range was introduced in 2015, a crossover innovation created by a top team of experts including the SeaXplorer design team, the Damen Research Laboratory, Azure Yacht Design and EYOS Expeditions, who provided hundreds of operational design features based on their real-world expedition experience.

Damen Yachts La Datcha

All aboard! This best-in-class expedition yacht is ready to take you on an Antarctic adventure and cure your quarantine blues—but it’ll cost you just shy of a mil.

The epic 252-footer, known as La Datcha , has just been listed for charter for roughly $898,000 per week . Commissioned by billionaire Russian banker Oleg Tinkov, it represents the first purpose-built icebreaker yacht compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s Polar Code and can cruise autonomously for up to 40 days.

The bronze-colored brute was built by Damen and the Dutch yard describes it as “the ultimate crossover of superyacht quality and finish with serious capability.” Basically, it can power through 16-inch-thick ice yet is replete with five-star luxury. She was delivered to Tinkov earlier this month , and he’s since offered her for hire in Antarctica during December 2021 and January 2022.

Part of Damen’s SeaXplorer series, the lofty vessel spans six decks, which are accessed via a special glass-encased elevator. She can sleep 12 guests—if you slit the bill that’s $70,000 each—as well as 25 crew that will cater to your every whim. Each of the six, sizeable cabins come complete with a walk-in dressing room and en suite bathroom.

Elsewhere, guests can take in the views from the observation lounge, which has incredible full-height windows, or make use of the onboard amenities, such as the Turkish bath and sauna, massage studio, gym or jacuzzi. It even has its own private hospital, which is especially handy at this time.

Damen Yachts La Datcha

Damen Yachts

Of course, what really sets this custom SeaXplorer SX77 apart is its toy collection. Tinkov, an avid explorer , threw in everything but the kitchen sink and the ship has an extraordinary equipment inventory, including two helicopters with helideck and hangar, two snowmobiles, four jet-skis, a mini-submarine, a dive center with a decompression chamber, as well as several tenders. On top of that, Tinkov’s personally selected ski guides will be on hand to organize bespoke heli-skiing trips across uncharted terrain.

La Datcha is available for the 2020/21 season through Edmiston Yachts . Full itineraries are available for all legs and you can contact Fraser for more information.

Damen Yachting’s SeaXplorer 77 La Datcha heads for Kamchatka

  • May 6, 2021

Available for charter, La Datcha is a purpose-built expedition yacht set to explore some of the world’s most remote and stunning locations, starting in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. By Bruce Maxwell.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Heliskiing and volcano visits on the Russian Far East’s Kamchatka Peninsula are among activities offered to charter guests aboard Damen Yachting’s recently-launched luxury SeaXplorer 77 La Datcha , described as “a unique project never seen before in the yachting industry”.

Availability is from July to December and the rate is €740,000 (about US$885,000) a week plus 30 per cent advance provisioning allowance. Bookings are reportedly brisk.

After that, La Datcha heads for Cabo San Lucas, a sportfishing mecca on the Pacific Coast of Mexico’s Baja California, and then, via Chile, to the Ross Sea in Antarctica.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Two master suites, two VIPs and two more 40sqm suites make good use of the vessel’s huge volume

Other exotic cruises, some working with EYOS Expeditions, are to include the Bering Sea and Alaska, the Northwest and Northeast Passages, Arctic Svalbard and Greenland, as well as remoter parts of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Southeast Asia, Maldives and the Seychelles are in the schedule, too.

Says La Datcha ’s website: “The Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas and their islands are undoubtedly beautiful, but altogether they amount to only 5 per cent of the world’s coastlines. Most luxury superyachts never venture any further, leaving 95 per cent of routes unexplored. If you are willing to go off the beaten track, we are there for you.”

la datcha yacht helicopter

Each individual suite has a bathroom with bath or shower, and walk-in wardrobes

In Kamchatka alone, Marketing and Sales Director Dasha Tinkova talks of brown bears, tundra wolves, Arctic foxes, snow sheep, reindeer, moose and muskoxen. The 1,250 km peninsula almost encloses the Sea of Okhotsk, where La Datcha will position for some charters, and offers all six species of Pacific salmon, Arctic narwhales, beluga whales and walruses, plus superb diving.

Huge sea eagles soar overhead and this remarkable “land of ice and fire” has 160 volcanoes, 29 of them active, in a World Heritage Site. Klyuchevskaya Sopka at 4,750m is the highest volcano in

the Northern Hemisphere. Close offshore, the mysterious Kuril-Kamchatka Trench is 10,500m deep.

la datcha yacht helicopter

A chess nook is located in one of the lounges

To tackle such environments, a very special vessel is needed, so the owner’s team, project managers, designers, builders, EYOS and others combined to produce an ocean-going charter yacht reflecting Amels’ advanced superyacht outfitting abilities on a tried and tested Damen Yachting SeaXplorer hull.

Says Rose Damen, the builder: “The SeaXplorer is a design and concept that appeals to those who are excited by the idea of adventure and exploration, but are still looking for that crossover with luxury yachting. That is exactly where La Datcha ’s journey began.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Backgammon is an option, too

“The owner wanted to bring a whole new approach to the explorer market. A yacht built for adventures in the far-flung corners of the world, without any compromise on the luxury experience, and with a commercial goal. This was to be a yacht intended for charter in both polar and tropical regions.

“With such a vision, our goal was to deliver the first purpose-built Explorer yacht in time to charter a few weeks after delivery. We took our SeaXplorer range as the build platform for this 77m vessel.”

la datcha yacht helicopter

Russian designer Vasiliy Shprits was asked to create a warm and natural interior, while still being chic and unusual

EYOS Expeditions was aboard from the outset, and Damen says it benefitted hugely from their operational know-how and experience. This was the key in achieving a level of capability “that cannot be found in traditional superyachts and conversion designs”.

“We incorporated hundreds of operational design features based on real expedition experience, and were able to customise and build to the owner’s brief, including many unique features which truly make her one of a kind.”

la datcha yacht helicopter

That brief began forming in 2017, when the owner took an interest in an Amels 60 Limited Editions design, attracted by the clean vertical lines of the axe bow, but once he saw the SeaXplorer concept, this instantly became his designated project.

Azure Yacht Design was called in. They had created the SeaXplorer series exteriors for the Damen Group as a development of the latter’s famous Yacht Support Vessels, a hybrid that combined the strength of the Damen Sea Axe hull and lines with the more classic beauty and luxury of subsidiary Amels superyachts.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Parent Damen is an enormous family-owned Dutch defence, engineering and shipbuilding group that has businesses in 120 countries, based at Vlissingen near the Dutch-Belgian border, with access there to the North Sea.

Erik Spek of Azure says: “The challenge was to make a commercial and potentially bulky-looking vessel look dynamic, yachtlike and well proportioned.

“As it was going to be a fully committed explorer-type yacht, we wanted to use a strong conceptual incentive to visually ‘protect’ guests on board. By wrapping the colossal bow around the superstructure, the exterior design both visually and literally created the yacht’s armour against the sea and ice.”

la datcha yacht helicopter

Three-person Triton 1650 submarine is likewise finished in custom La Datcha colours

Other exterior design features include an observation post in the bow for activities like whale watching or perhaps observing arctic scenery, and a ‘floating band’ in the profile continues forward of the panoramic interior observation lounge, providing an extra sense of security. There’s also a custom lifeboat cum limousine tender that is a replica of La Datcha herself, a sort of ‘mini me’, which when stowed, blends beautifully into the hull and its Saharan tan colour scheme.

The aluminium mast’s Crow’s Nest offers an extraordinary 360-degree viewing point, and the forward observation lounge on the upper deck likewise affords spectacular 270 degree vistas.

la datcha yacht helicopter

La Datcha refers to a second home in Russia, also spelt dacha . Traditionally it is a small cottage in the woods, where Russian people spend their holidays and weekends. This floating cottage spans six decks and offers luxury accommodation for 12 guests in six suites, including two masters and two VIPs. Each comes with an ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

The owner’s suite on the principal deck is an expansive 95sqm and on the upper deck it is 67.5sqm. This can be combined with a 35sqm suite to form an apartment-style set-up. The three other suites are 40sqm, the same size as VIP suites aboard an Amels 242 Limited Edition, so La Datcha really does deliver luxury volume within its 14m beam. Ceiling heights are 2.2m.

la datcha yacht helicopter

She carries a crew of 19 bolstered by up to six expedition-related staff such as helicopter pilots, heli engineer, and expedition guides for specific activities.

Initial Build Captain Darren Wakelam says: “ La Datcha ’s 6,000nm range and 40-day autonomy at sea gives us enormous capability to cruise to remote areas, which tend to be more rugged and offer more wildlife. Her voyage to the Russian Far East is sure to be fabulous. It is pretty much the end of the world. Hard to access, unspoiled, and very, very few yachts have ever travelled there.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Observation areas are custom created throughout

“Without doubt, she’s built to a high standard both externally as a ship and internally in the luxury spaces. She looks rugged and capable, and with a well-appointed interior, promises adventure. I have zero doubt that she will make good on that promise.”

As La Datcha is now well under way, two further Captains, Alistair Reed and Alexander Baronjan, are handling the vessel in rotation. Custom interiors are created by Russian architect Vasiliy Shprits, who has previously focused on private residences and luxury resort fitouts. Apart from the comforts of the salons and lounges, guests have an extra-large beach club with sauna, steam room, massage and gym.

Natural oak, leather, bronze, marble and onyx are blended with stone mosaics and woollen rugs to create chic and unusual aspects while still being simple and warm, with adventure as the underlying theme.

There is a sideboard with 3D leather panelling, and a featured ice bar 3.2m long and made from almost completely clear epoxy resin. It looks like a real block of ice and can be illuminated in different colours.

The vessel itself is Ice Classed and built to the latest IMO Polar Code. Other parts of the Damen Shipyards Group construct Ice Breakers and Coast Guard Ships, so they already had state-of-the-art expertise in these fields.

la datcha yacht helicopter

Another attractive al fresco dining area is tucked in behind a bulkhead for protection from the wind when La Datcha is under way

The Code now includes having a reinforced Ice Class 1C Ice Breaker hull, and stabilisers are retractable to avoid being trapped by drifting ice floes or submersed logs.

She is fully equipped for world class heliskiing with two helicopters, a certified helideck and below-deck hangar, ski room, snowmobiles and avalanche safety equipment, and is designed to carry

an impressive inventory of tropical equipment for ocean exploring, such as a dive centre, three-person Triton 1650 submarine finished in La Datcha colours, wave runners, more toys and watercraft, and three large tenders.

On the port side is a Fassmer, custom designed and built rescue boat cum limousine tender of 9.26m. On the starboard outside is an 8.5m Beachlander, and inside a 9.1 m RIB tender, both by Insider

la datcha yacht helicopter

Three wave runners in custom colours supplement an enormous array of other toys and watercraft in the dive centre and beach club aft

La Datcha is designed to deliver 40 days of autonomy at sea thanks to extra-large stores for provisions, laundry, luggage, fuel, waste-water holding tanks and garbage management. There is also a hospital aboard, close to the crew quarters, where the crew gym is located. Having a hospital is a formality required by class, and it has complete quarantine facilities, including its own separate air-conditioning and sewage systems.

Project management for the owner was conducted by Alexander Pizano of Fraser, and charter bookings may be made via Victoria Verhovskaia at agents Edmiston Monaco.

Concludes Pizano: “She is the first purpose-built expedition yacht with a fixed itinerary, a product never seen before in the yachting industry.” www.damenyachting.com www.edmiston.com www.ladatcha.com www.eyos-expeditions.com

Our Man On The Ground Travel and Lifestyle

Our Man On The Ground Travel and Lifestyle

Global travel and lifestyle magazine, la datcha expedition yacht 77 – a voyage worth waiting for.

 alt=

With the handover due later this summer, a Russian banking billionaire owner of La Datcha was on hand at and excited about the launching of his new 77 metre ice class, polar compatible, expedition yacht.

Oleg Tinkov and his family attended the event at the Damen Shipyards hull building yard in Galati, Romania. After the launch the hull was transported to the SeaXplorer outfitting yard in the Netherlands where ahead of delivery in September 2020, just in time to debut at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Built with extensive customisations to the Tinkov family’s requirements, including Oleg’s passion for heliskiing, La Datcha stands out with her helideck and hangar capable of handling two rotary aircraft.  She is fully certified for helicopters weighing up to 4,000 kg.

La Datcha Superyacht

La Datcha is a stylish, sturdy and highly customised expedition yacht constructed so as to be capable of breaking through polar ice. The ultra-luxury accommodations on board match and complement the owners growing collection of luxury hotels and villas in France, Italy and Russia.

Mr Tinkoff intends to make his new yacht available for charter in a range of polar and tropical destinations during his planned extensive two-year global tour. She can be chartered for around three quarters of a million euros per week but before you get too excited about how cheap that is, you should remember that you will need roughly another quarter of a million on top of that to cover the costs of the food you eat the wines and spirits you feed and the fuel the yacht will burn on passage.

Worth waiting for

It will however be a voyage worth waiting for. During September and October 2020 La Datcha will be in Greece giving those who want to charter her the opportunity to explore the idyllic islands and coves after the summer holiday crowds have left. By January and February the following year she will have reached the Seychelles and will be available to not only those islands locally, but she is full capable of exploring other gems of the Indian Ocean such as Madagascar. That’s the perfect spot to try out the yacht’s myriad of watersports toys, including full scuba diving equipment and a professional dive centre.

La Datcha Superyacht in the Arctic

Fancy Thailand or Malaysia? Well just wait until March 2021 and join La Dacha there to discover the areas pristine diving spots and untouched beaches and islands or go further afield and drop by the Andaman Islands or go fishing off the Nicobar Islands, the choice is all yours.

But if you think ice is nice wait until the spring when the yacht visits Russia’s most scenically dramatic region, the Kamchatka peninsula offers the intrepid explorer endless opportunities for discovery. Use her two B3 Eurocopter helicopters for heliskiing or explore the rugged beauty of the South Kamchatka Sanctuary.

By May 2021 La Datcha will be cruising the Kuril Islands, a chain of volcanic islands that rise out of the Sea of Okhotsk, stretching south-west from the tip of Kamchatka to Japan, the Kuril Islands deliver challenging heliskiing for adventurous skiers.

Ready to launch the superyacht

In June you can experience the primal beauty of Kamchatka, using La Datcha Expedition Yacht 77’s expert heliskiing set-up to ski on the flanks of smoking volcanoes and past steaming vents to black stone beaches. Then, a month or so later discover the magic of the Alaskan summer: a time when the sun refuses to set, salmon run upriver, and wildlife viewing is at its prime.

October 2021 could see you exploring the unique wonder of the Galapagos Islands from the comfort of La Datcha, unveil its underwater secrets with your own submarine and full scuba diving set-up.

Talking just before the launch, the owner said, “The Earth is so big and our life is so short, so we have to explore as much as we can.” He added, “I fell in love with the shape, the design. With two helicopters, you can really go further, you can see the bears and other animals. You can heliski. Any kind of activities, fishing and so on. With two helicopters you have absolute freedom to explore any remote territory as deep as you want.”

Launch of La Datcha Superyacht

The yacht carries extra provisions and facilities for 40 days of global autonomy without port call, and a superb set of toys, tenders, snowmobiles and even a three-person submarine.

“I’ll be really excited to have this boat the first time in Kuril Islands and then Kamchatka in 2021,” the owner continued. “That’s a real excitement because I’ve explored Kamchatka quite well with the helicopter, but it would be quite nice to explore it from the shore, more remote territories and see the far east of Russia and then continue on to Alaska. From there, we can go on and do so many things.”

The yacht has a volume of 2,560gt and accommodates 12 guests, in two master suites, together with 25 crew. The yacht’s exterior design is by Azure Yacht Design, while the interior is by the owner’s choice of designer, Vasiliy Shprits whose studio, has also designed many of the owner’s residential properties.

Inside the Shocking Sicily Yacht Tragedy: 7 People Dead After Rare Luxury Boat Disaster

There was a violent storm, but even then, luxury yachts are built to weather such events. so why did this boat sink off the coast of sicily, leaving seven people dead.

Nobody was trying to reach the lowest depths of the ocean or otherwise test the boundaries of human endurance .

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter  of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner , the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco , head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera  Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told  La Repubblica , per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch —"Britain's Bill Gates ," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah  to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain , the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer —who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer , as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo , a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo , a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo . None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas .

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Mike Lynch’s Body Is Found After Sicily Yacht Sinking, Official Says

The authorities have recovered the bodies of all but one of the six people missing after disaster struck a yacht carrying the British software tycoon.

A rescue boat moored at a harbor with emergency workers both onboard and alongside ambulances on the shore. A blue body bag can be seen at the boat’s stern.

By Emma Bubola and Elisabetta Povoledo

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Elisabetta Povoledo from Pallanza, Italy.

The body of the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch was among those recovered by Italian divers, an official in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, said on Thursday, confirming that he was killed when a violent storm struck his yacht this week.

Of the 22 people on board the yacht, which had anchored off the Sicilian coast early Monday, when it sank, nine crew members and six passengers survived.

As of Thursday afternoon, Italian recovery teams had retrieved the bodies of the one remaining crew member and five passengers who had been on the yacht, which now lies in 165 feet of water near the port of Porticello, and were searching for one more passenger.

The death of Mr. Lynch was confirmed by Massimo Mariani, the prefect of Palermo, who said that the remaining missing person was the technology entrepreneur’s daughter Hannah.

The others victims were Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Christopher J. Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder,” the Bloomer family said in a statement. “Our parents were incredible people.”

The Morvillo family said it was “completely devastated by the passing of Chris and Neda,” and added, “Their passing is a tremendous loss.”

The yacht was caught in a sudden downpour. Weather experts said that strong winds and lightning had hit the area and that the yacht had most likely been struck by air generated within a thunderstorm descending rapidly or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

Rescue teams involving deep sea divers with the Italian firefighters’ corps, coordinated by the coast guard, as well as helicopters and rescue ships, had worked to reach the hull of the ship, which had settled on its side on the sea floor.

Carlo Dall’Oppio, the national head of Italy’s firefighters, said on Thursday that the boat was tilted by 90 degrees on the sea bottom. He said the bodies had been found “in the cabins,” although it remained unclear if they were all found in the same one.

The rescue teams recovered four bodies on Wednesday and one on Thursday, bringing them ashore in body bags in front of a crowd of reporters and onlookers.

The priority remained “the recovery of the missing body,” said Mr. Mariani. Once that search is completed, the judicial authorities would decide the next steps, he said.

The bodies recovered so far were already at the disposal of prosecutors, he said, “and then there is the investigative phase,” which would include the recovery of the yacht.

The Italian prosecutors handling the case have attracted strong criticism from the local press association because of their reluctance to share any information with reporters.

As of Thursday, they had not held a news conference or released a statement on the investigation, generating what the Sicilian press association called “a black market of news” that made it hard to verify information.

Finally, on Thursday afternoon, Ambrogio Cartosio, the prosecutor handling the case, said that a news conference would be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the town of Termini Imerese, the location of his office.

Mr. Mariani said the operations to recover the bodies had gone quickly, taking into account that the divers had a limited amount of time — about 12 minutes — to operate before coming up.

“It was complicated and also potentially dangerous for the divers,” he said, because of the size of the yacht. “There are objective difficulties; thankfully, they are well trained and know what they are doing.”
