LIL TECCA - VIRGO WORLD

listen to the new album:

Virgo World

Much has been made of the way Long Island MC and “Ransom” singer Lil Tecca’s personal aesthetic differs from that of your average rap star, but if Tecca’s sophomore project Virgo World is to be believed, the MC is still getting used to the role. The album is of course steeped in the endless melody and New York lingo Tecca delivered on We Love You Tecca—listen closely for references to “sneaky links,” judgments about who is and is not “sanctioned,” and the always rhetorical “How that work?” But the 18-year-old MC is also forthright about just how much his life has changed since “Ransom.” “I don’t know what’s going on/I’m getting to the racks now that n***a call me ‘bro,’” he sings on album opener “Our Time.” On “Actin Up,” he celebrates being able to afford designer clothes, and on “When You Down,” he admonishes women who have changed their tune, singing, “Girl, you didn’t f**k with me then/So why you f**king with me now?” There’s plenty of joy here, as can be heard on lead single “Royal Rumble” and the Skrillex- and DJ Scheme-produced “Selection,” but above all else there is authenticity, Tecca reminding us on “No Answers”: “I’ma always be myself and we gon’ count up these checks.”

On his 2013 song “Lonely,” South Carolina rapper Speaker Knockerz sounds like C-3PO with a splash of AutoTune, backed by pianos soft enough for a lullaby. “I had to make a couple bands by my lonely,” he sings, and his expressionless voice suggests he’s trying to hold back tears over a stack of money, like Jada Pinkett Smith in the final scene of Set It Off . It was a regional hit, and became something bigger than that after his tragic death at 19 the following year. The song trickled its way up the East Coast to New York, and Speaker Knockerz’s handful of mixtapes became a lodestar for a new scene of singing rappers 700 miles from his hometown: artists like A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie , Lil Tjay , Jay Gwuapo, and most obviously, Lil Tecca .

Coming from the Five Towns, a section of Long Island that abuts Queens, the 18-year-old Lil Tecca has made Speaker Knockerz’s impact on his music openly known . But even if he never admitted it, you’d be able to tell. “Ransom,” Tecca’s 2019 breakout moment, feels particularly indebted, as he glides over a bright and bubbly beat with a monotone flow, sounding like the kid who got called on by the teacher after sleeping at the back of the classroom. Tecca channels the style well, but there’s an element of Speaker Knockerz that mere imitation can’t capture: he was a writer, filling songs like his “Rico Story” trilogy with the narrative detail of a Carl Franklin neo-noir . On Lil Tecca's debut album Virgo World, he compensates for his lack of a pen with a pocketful of catchy rhythms and melodies, but they don’t have enough spark to elevate the filler.

This isn’t an attempt to nitpick about rappers who lack substance, but they do have to say some memorable or cool shit eventually. The lifestyle Lil Tecca documents in his songs is mundane, which isn’t necessarily a strike against him; plenty of other rappers have found ways to make the uneventful pop. Babyface Ray packs his songs with colorful specifics that make it feel as if you’re there, and Curren$y can make the most monotonous days sound glamorous. Virgo World ’s boasts and observations are too generic to resonate in the same way. “For all that I been through and all that I’m goin through next/I’ma always be myself and we gon’ count up these checks,” he raps twice on “No Answers.”

Tecca’s storytelling faults are most clear on “When You Down.” Next to Lil Durk and Polo G , who are both pouring their hearts out, Tecca sing-raps about faceless haters and friends who have turned their backs on him, a writing crutch he leans on repeatedly. On “Insecurities,” he sings, “Real nigga shit, niggas not how they seem like/Real nigga shit, I’m goin’ up and niggas seem tight.” These impersonal and unspecific lines are made even more lifeless by a Taz Taylor and Nick Mira beat that’s like a watered down version of an instrumental from Popcaan ’s Fixtape .

Since Lil Tecca emerged on SoundCloud in 2018, his best songs have been the ones where the melodies, production, and good vibes outweigh the blandness of whatever he’s saying. In keeping with that trend, Virgo World ’s strongest cut is “Selection,” a Skrillex and DJ Scheme pop record that captures the fun of that “Sorry,” “Where Are Ü Now,” and “What Do You Mean?” summer of 2015. Tecca also has an affinity for light Afro-Fusion records; “Level Up” and “Closest to Heaven” are a pair of moody, slow-wining dance cuts that I selfishly wish were released in June. But these glimpses of vibrancy don’t come often enough.

Nobody is asking Lil Tecca to be profound, or even to make sense. But at least give us the full picture of what you’re talking about. Who turned their back on you? Who is fake? What are you wearing? What are you drinking? What city are you in? Who or what is making you feel this way? These sorts of details helped Speaker Knockerz mixtapes travel from South Carolina and into Tecca’s Long Island home. So far, it’s hard to imagine Lil Tecca’s music making the same sort of journey.

Lil Yachty Unloads On Karrahbooo After Concrete Boys Exit, Claims He Wrote All Her Raps

Lil Yachty Unloads On Karrahbooo After Concrete Boys Exit, Claims He Wrote All Her Raps

Lil Yachty has flipped out at Karrahbooo after she allegedly claimed that she was “bullied” by the group and ultimately kicked out.

Yachty announced the rising rapper’s departure on Instagram last month, saying: “We have split ways with Karrah as far as this Concrete shit. I have nothing bad to say, nothing negative to say about Karrah. I wish her the best in her career.”

However, his diplomatic stance didn’t last long as Yachty returned to Instagram Live on Thursday (August 22) to go on a rant about his former assitant turned artist.

The Atlanta rapper made a number of accusations about Karrahbooo, including that she was “verbally abusive” towards his bodyguard and that he wrote all of her raps, including her viral On the Radar freestyle .

“I’m so sick and tired of helping people,” he said. “Gon’ ‘head and tell people how you verbally abuse people. How you told my security guard, ‘Oh, you work for me. You’re poor and we above you.’ You talk to people like you nothing! [Tell people] how you told me you gonna spin on me when you see me. Your brain is clinically imbalanced.”

Yachty also denied mistreating the “Running Late” rapper: “Karrah, I have never bullied you. I let you live at my house for free! I ain’t never done nothing but be nice, love you, brought you around every rapper. I brought you around everybody from [Lil] Baby to Drake.”

He added: “You don’t even do nothing! I wrote every fucking verse you’ve done. I dressed you. I gave you that chrome Rolex. You were waiting tables! I changed your muthafucking life! And you on here lying talking about some ‘we bully you’? That shit got me fucked up, bruh!

“I wrote that fucking verse when we went on On the Radar . I put you last on purpose so everyone would say, ‘Who the fuck is that girl?’ … I got the fucking reference.”

Backing up his claim, Yachty shared an iPhone voice note of his reference for Karrahbooo’s show-stealing verse in the Concrete Boys cypher.

Yachty also hit back at Karrahbooo’s claim that he has stolen money from her and in turn accused her of owing almost $1 million to his label.

“You talked to my fucking label crazy. You claim I was stealing money from you. Stealing money from you how, n-gga? You ain’t made no money!” he said.

“You $900,000 in the whole and I got every fucking receipt, n-gga. And I’ma post it. I dare you [to] try me. And I’ll post how much money your fucking streams have made.”

He added: “Don’t go on the internet and act like I’m bullying you, bro. I’ve been nothing but loving and caring and paid your bills and gave you money and took you around the world. Nobody would even know who the fuck Karrahbooo was if it wasn’t for me.”

August 21, 2024

Lil Yachty’s outburst was seemingly sparked by a social media post claiming that Karrahbooo had been bullied out of the Concrete Boys.

A restaurant employee claimed on X (formerly Twitter) to have been told by the 27-year-old herself that she had been “kicked out” of the collective and the group members were “bullying her a lot.”

Karrahbooo also made a vague reference to the drama on her own X account, quote tweeting her own post which said: “ion say too much cuz I know shit gone unfold on its own,” with the comment: “this aged well.”

Lil Yachty Has All-Time Crash Out Session Over Karrahbooo & ‘A Safe Place’ Co-Host Mitch

In case you were living under a rock or just woke up from coma, last night Lil Yachty had a public meltdown on Instagram Live over his former artist Karrahbooo and his podcast co-host and friend Mitch.

First, a clip of his podcast A Safe Place went around of him, Mitch, and Key Glock having a discussion about trying to understand why some want what others have when things got awkward. “Some people gotta eat, gotta feed they family, however the case may be,” Yachty said. “That’s when the militant part comes into play because sometimes, unfortunately, don’t wanna put in work and just want what you have. And that’s a whole different conversation because I ain’t been rich forever.” Adding, “I done been broke before, so who am I to tell this n—a not to go do what you gotta do.

Mitch disagreed and said you can give them different advice.” However, Yachty then replied, “Like what? You ain’t never had a job. What you gonna tell a n—a to get a job?” The Atlanta rapper then brought up what Mitch would be doing with his life if Yachty wasn’t around and all Key Glock could do was sit there in silence.

Naturally, Rap Twitter had a field day with said clip and criticized Yachty for being a bad friend. Boat addressed the viral clip during his IG Live session and stated he started the podcast to help his friend and said he was going to end it because Mitch wouldn’t defend him on social media. “I aint want to do no motherf—king podcast, n—a, I’m a f—king rapper.”

Lil Yachty goes off on his bestfriend and producer Mitch and cancels their podcast together 'A Safe Place' on IG live, for not clearing up a viral clip "I aint want to do no motherf*cking podcast n*gga, Im a f*cking rapper… I put $400,000 in Mitch pocket…" pic.twitter.com/OX9TloJQ58 — SOUND (@itsavibe) August 23, 2024

Mitch then took to X to clear the air, suggesting him and Yachty joke around and are often brutally honest with each other.

As for Karrahbooo, a waitress at Red Lobster set fire to this whole night. X user @C_Staxxz claimed the former Concrete Boy member walked into the restaurant chain to buy some Cheddar Bay Biscuits said she was kicked out of the group after being asked why she left. The user also claimed Karrahbooo told her that “they were really mean to her and bullying her a lot.”

A fan who met KARRAHBOOO claims she said she was "kicked out" of Concrete Boys and bullied within the group pic.twitter.com/NDmuYN467Q — Kurrco (@Kurrco) August 22, 2024

Those two now-deleted tweets bothered Yachty so much, he decided to hop on Live and finally address the situation. He responded by saying, “Tell people how you verbally abuse people. Don’t get on here to make it seem like niggas kicked you out… bullying you? Bro, go ‘head and tell people how you talk to people… You talk to people like they’re small, like they’re beneath you.”

He then claimed that he wrote all of her verses and styled her and the other members of the Concrete Boys. “I wrote every f—king verse you’ve done,” he said. “I dressed you. I dressed all five of y’all n—as, bro. I dressed five n—as every time we stepped out the house. I put an outfit on everybody. I put eight carat earrings in everybody ear. I put three chains on all y’all neck.”

Adding, “We bought a Cartier watch. I gave you that chrome Rolex, bro. You was waiting tables… What are we talking about, n—a? I changed your motherf—king life and you are here lying, talking about some, ‘We bully you’… That sh—t got me f—ked up, bro. You got me f—ked up, bro. You disrespectful, bro. You talk to people crazy. You tell people that they are nothing. You tell people you’re going to spit on them. You tell people they poor and you talk to my f—king label crazy. You claim I was stealing money from you. Stealing money from you how? You ain’t made no money.”

He continued, “This the problem with you new artists. Y’all get poppin’ online and then you become more popular than your actual music. You $900,000 in the whole and I got every f—king receipt.” Boat then brought up her viral On the Radar freestyle and said he was trying to make her pop off and it worked. “I slowed the beat down, I put 808s specifically on your verse so when it got to your part and the beat dropped, everyone would be like, ‘This girl is the craziest one.’”

For whatever reason, Boat finds himself in these situations and even went as far as to claim he was going to stop talking on the Internet . “I’m not doing no more talkin’,” Yachty said on Instagram Live last month. “I don’t got s—t else to say. I’m gone off this internet s—t. I think I’m gone for the rest of the year. I swear to God. I ain’t got s—t else to say.

Karrahbooo has yet to respond.

Lil Yachty Cancels His Podcast Despite Mitch Claiming That He And Yachty Are Cool

Wicked Featuring 21 Savage

Lil Yachty had an interesting Thursday, and that is probably putting it very mildly. Overall, it all started thanks to the backlash he received for the comments he made on his A Safe Place podcast. During the podcast, featuring Key Glock, Yachty denigrated his podcast co-host Mitch. Essentially, Yachty said his friend wouldn't be successful without him. Fans absolutely hated these comments and called out the rapper for being out of line in this instance.

This drama spilled over into the recent news that Karrahboo is no longer with Concrete Boys. After Karrahboo made an offhand remark about Yachty, the Lil Boat MC went off on Instagram Live. He exposed Karrahboo, claiming that he wrote every single one of her bars. Furthermore, Yachty noted that Karrahboo treated the people around her horrible, and that he had no choice but to kick her from the group. As for Mitch, Yachty claimed that he wasn't rocking with his friend and that the podcast was canceled.

Lil Yachty Crashes Out

This was all very surprising, especially when you consider how Mitch came out and clarified what went down. On Twitter, he said that he and Yachty were cool. However, he did make it clear that he was successful before Yachty. Either way, the podcast appears to be in disarray right now. Yachty's rant was impulsive, and only time will tell whether or not he truly burned any bridges with it.

VMAN 53: Taking the Stage With Lil Yachty

You’re either born with good taste or you’re not. Fortunately, for our cover star Lil Yachty and Creative Director of Burberry Daniel Lee, style is something they can talk about for hours on end

lil yachty virgo world

  • Text by The Editors of VMAN

Lil Yachty is best known as one of the most creative, outspoken, genre-allergic artists in hip-hop.

lil yachty virgo world

After establishing himself as a purveyor of what he’s called “bubblegum trap,” in the last few years the rapper has gone in a trippier, more psychedelic direction. His latest release, Bad Cameo , which came out this summer, is a moody collaboration with the esteemed English musician James Blake. Style is a moving target for Yachty in music, and, as he explains in this conversation with Burberry’s Daniel Lee, in fashion. From altering people’s sweats for extra cash as a kid growing up in Atlanta to serving a look for his latest music video, Yachty is always trying on new ideas of self through dynamic creative expression.

DANIEL LEE: What is the earliest memory you have of wearing a good outfit?

LIL YACHTY: In middle and high school, I used to wear uniforms. We could go with white, blue, or maroon, and my mom would go to TJ Maxx or Marshalls to get me polo uniforms. I’d have a polo shirt and could get a polo sweater to wrap around my neck. I thought that was sick, like, I thought that was hot.

I remember getting one dress-down day in sixth grade. The outfits were awful. This was before skinny jeans came back. Before then, they didn’t sell skinny jeans in stores. I remember going to see my grandma in North Carolina, and on the way home, we stopped at an outlet with a Rue 21 store. For months I had been trying to find skinny jeans before Hot Topic and Spencer’s were selling them. I couldn’t find them anywhere. I had a pair before they became popular.

The first outfit I thought was good was on my first day of high school. I’ll never forget wearing a Hundreds shirt. I loved Bobby Hundreds. It was The Hundreds’ collaboration with Lil B, the “Thank You BasedGod” shirt, with Abercrombie and Fitch camo shorts. I still have the picture. And Vans. That was my idea of a good outfit. Then in 9th and 10th grade, I really started learning fashion. I won best dressed senior year.

lil yachty virgo world

DL: What was your style like as a teenager growing up in Mableton, Georgia?

LY: Hundreds, Diamond Supply, Supreme, and vintage clothes. I was shopping at thrift stores and there was a lot of 1996 Olympics gear. I love throwback jerseys, I still wear them. I wear 90s all-over print shorts, like 90s swim trunks. They just had crazy tribal patterns. I loved hockey jerseys. I had a fake pair of Cartiers. I always had a grill; I’ve been wearing a grill since the ninth grade. I used to wear a 16-piece grill, eight top, eight bottom.

I think I was one of the first people in my town to wear skinny sweats. You could get skinny sweats from Zara but Adidas didn’t make soccer pants yet so I used to take a sewing machine—my mom taught me how to sew—and I would alter them to make them tighter. I made a job out of it, sewing people’s sweats to make them tighter and that’s how I started making money.

DL: What were some of the first musicians you remember being influenced by, in terms of what they wear?

LY: 100% Kris Kross. When I was a child, my dad gave me a Kris Kross tape. They wore their clothes backwards. I never wore my clothes backwards but I did love the style, the fashion, the baseball jerseys, the big jeans, and then the hair. As soon as I got to high school, I started copying the swag. I started doing my hair like that. I grew out my locks. I started braiding it.

DL: Where do you go, or what do you do, to find new ideas?

LY: I’m just on the internet, I’m outside, I watch movies. You just have to live. I find ideas by just living life and indulging in all life has to offer, good and bad.

DL: When do you feel at your most creative?

LY: While getting dressed or when recording music. It feels super creative when I’m filming. When I’m shooting a video, I honestly feel like a character. I feel creative in so many different spaces, whether it’s with fashion, music, or filming.

DL: What makes you feel confident?

LY: A fresh haircut and working on my appearance helps. I believe in myself and I believe in everything I say and stand on, so confidence comes from within—without worrying too much about how anyone else feels, you know? I wear what I want to wear, I say what I want to say, I walk how I want to walk.

DL: What is the most inspiring city you’ve been to?

LY: It’s between Tokyo and New York when it comes to fashion. If we’re talking just inspiring in general, probably Tokyo. Tokyo was really amazing and really different. Switzerland is also really beautiful. The scenery was really inspiring to me. It gives off really trippy and peaceful vibes.

DL: Having a supportive community is important. Who are some of your biggest mentors?

LY: Drake, Tyler, the Creator, Lil Baby, and Coach K, my manager. I’d say those are the people that I trust and can talk to and respect and really look up to.

DL: So far, what are you most proud of in your career?

lil yachty virgo world

LY: I’m proud of everything, you know? I’m proud of writing songs. I’m proud of the respect from guys in the fashion industry. I did so much at a young age, and have so much more to do.

DL: You have collaborated with Drake, A$AP Rocky, and Tyler, the Creator and, in June, released the album Bad Cameo with James Blake. What is next for Lil Yachty?

LY: I never stopped doing music and I think getting into the fashion spaces, that’s what’s next for me. I’m starting my brand this year. That’s really important for me and I’m really excited.

DL: So much of life is online now. How important are real-life exchanges to you?

LY: I can’t stress enough how extremely important real-life experiences are between friends, family, loved ones, people you’re trying to get to know. Virtual reality can be so fabricated…it’s important to indulge in real-life experiences. I think what I was saying earlier about just living life, so much emotion gets lost in virtuality. Seeing real-life reactions, experiences, facial expressions, all that just means so much more.

DL: What is currently on your playlist?

LY: I’m making an album right now, so… Sister Nancy, Luther Vandross, Antonio Adolfo, Con Funk Shun, Mazzy Star, Ben Flocks. I mean so much. Piero Piccioni. I’ve been listening to a bunch of jazz. Royel Otis. Cocteau Twins, PARTYNEXTDOOR, The Cranberries, Beach House. I love Beach House. Faye Webster of course, Nightlight, Ready for the World, Sampha. Definitely Sampha. I listen to DJ Screw. Seal, Frank Ocean, Bon Iver, Mark Fry, Oasis, BADBADNOTGOOD. I can literally keep going—you know John Carroll Kirby? Heavy. Elton John. Mel McDaniel. Michael Levy. So much, man.

DL: What do you enjoy most about performing live?

LY: It’s a free feeling. It’s all just so real, you know? You can’t fake it. I love that.
