One of the main aims of this new design was to produce a boat of outstanding comfort and living accommodation space, with as little sacrifice as possible to the excellent sailing performance, windward ability, and seakeeping qualities of this well proven type of hull form.

Apart from the great benefits that can be derived from flaring the hull above the waterline, in terms of keeping the bow up on a reach, the flare gives a massive increase in interior volume without increasing the windage of the hulls at all. For instance, above the waterline the hull flares outwards to give a maximum beam at eye level of 1.95m (6'4"), the impression of space is tremendous and cannot possibly be matched by any similar length catamaran whose topsides rise almost parallel from the waterline.

Construction and Long Term Fatigue By using integrated structural techniques the hull weight can be carefully controlled and the net effect is a strong, light displacement hull with a high long term fatigue life. Integrated Structure is a computer aided design method which I originally developed for the highly stressed ocean racers of the North Atlantic circuit . The structure of the boat is designed in a similar way to a sail where highly loaded areas like reef points and clew are patched out into the lighter body of the sail, the layers of cloth increasing from the lighter body of the sail out towards the clew or reef cringle. (ref 7). On a wood epoxy design this is achieved by laying unidirectional fibres along the line of greatest stress in highly loaded areas, and spreading the fibres into the body of the hull or deck until the stress is distributed over a large enough area to ensure that structural failure of the boat itself is virtually impossible. Fibre quantities are carefully calculated to avoid any stress build up in the structure at vulnerable points, thereby increasing the fatigue life of the boat dramatically.

Windward Performance In the past it was not unusual to find a bridgedeck saloon type Cruising Catamaran which would tack through 100 degrees or more. This poor pointing ability is caused by the combined effect of heavy displacement, inefficient under water foils, small sail area, and poor attention being paid to windage and the streamlining of hull shapes in the air.

By keeping the boat light (through Integrated Structure), by using efficiently shaped daggerboards and rudders, and by minimising the aerodynamic drag - i.e. designing the bridgedeck and hulls to be as streamlined as possible, the Shuttle 32 will have excellent windward performance. Bearing in mind that a sailing boat must be streamlined with the air flowing across the deck at 30 degrees to the bow, because that is the direction the that the wind actually flows across the boat when she is sailing to windward. All the other existing designs in the range have already proven themselves to be outstanding windward boats, tacking through 80 degrees at maximum Vmg, and outsailing all but the stripped out racing multihull machines, on all points of sail.

A wing mast has been chosen as the standard rig  A wing provides a very efficient and simple rig, which can be home built.   The high aspect jib is self tacking, which means no winching or flogging lines when coming about. Fantastic for cruising! The mast size is designed so that the mast itself becomes the storm sail.

A single outboard is mounted in the centre of the cockpit. and when retracted there are no propellers in the water to cause unwanted drag, and no holes through the hull. In the cockpit the box doubles as a table.

Accommodation

The Accommodation is straightforward and spacious, with the saloon aft in the port hull. 2m (6'7") long and 2.3m (7'6") wide at eye level. The flare in the hull makes this a very spacious and comfortable social area. Forward of the saloon is the 1.9m (6') long galley with ample space for storage and food preparation. The single daggerboard, with our special kick up system, is unobtrusively canted towards the hull side at the ford end of the galley. In the bow is a forward stateroom with a large double bunk. 2m ( '7") x 1.35m (4'6").The starboard hull aft has a very big double berth 2m (6'7") x 1.6m (5'4"), with good locker space and standing area for dressing. Next is a fair sized chart table, and oilskin locker with a separate W.C. / shower area. The forward area is the same as the port hull.

Forward and separate of the berth in each hull is a wet locker accessed from the deck. Reefing and raising/lowering of sails is carried out while standing by the mast........... A 3/4 stratoglass enclosure and full T-top protects the cockpit from spray and rain. A full length tiller bar gives the helmsman considerable choice of where to sit.

Visibility of the sails and forward is very good, which will increase the enjoyment of sailing this exciting performance cruiser.

Eagle is a custom open bridge-deck performance cruising catamaran from the design board of John Shuttleworth who is known for his innovative performance multihulls used in racing circuits and endurance events worldwide.

The Shuttleworth 32 was conceptualized as a lightweight, simple to sail, sailor’s catamaran.  Eagle  was professionally built in Florida by Dale Schneider. The hull and deck are fiberglass impregnated with vinylester resin over closed cell foam core. The hull is flared above the waterline to create greater interior volume, without increasing windage.  Consequently this catamaran provides excellent sailing performance on all points of sail,  The design is expected to tack through 80 degrees at maximum VMG, sailing closer to the wind than almost any cruising catamaran on the water. There is a single dagger-board located in the port hull which can be raised easily for off-wind and shallow water sailing.

Eagle is fitted with a rotating wing mast constructed of carbon. The rig was completely refurbished in 2018 with partial Dyneema standing and running rigging added. The wing provides a very efficient and simple rig. The high aspect jib is self tacking which means no winching nor flogging lines when coming about. The mast size is designed so that the mast itself becomes the storm sail. The forward cross beam is also built in carbon to minimize weight forward and provide exceptional strength to this critical structure. The rig is equipped with a furling screecher for fast off wind sailing.

An advantage of the flared hull design is not only to provide latent buoyancy and lift, but to significantly increase in interior cabin volume. The accommodations are comfortable for a couple with space for guests in each hull. A full galley is found in the port hull and a chart table and head on the starboard side. The open bridge-deck with hard top has plentiful seating, excellent visibility in all directions and easy access to sail controls. There are large fridge/ freezer compartments located in the forward section of the cockpit.

Eagle will appeal to adventurous sailors who want be off the grid and enjoy sparkling sailing and the ability to access very shallow anchorages or pull up to beaches with ease. Thanks to the kick-up rudders and dagger board,  the vessel has 18″ of draft!

Eagle has an open cockpit/bridgedeck with accommodation in the hulls.

The port hull has a spacious (7’x 4’6″) double bunk in the bow, with the canted daggerboard casing on the outer side of the hull behind;  the lateral galley is mid-ships and a comfortable salon/dinette aft with a large table can drop down to form a 4th double berth. There is a large, open storage compartment in the stern.

The starboard hull has the ‘master cabin’  aft, with large (6’7 x 5’4) berth, with standing room & plentiful storage. Forward is the chart table & wet locker & separate head, with Lavac toilet on the inboard side and basin & shower on the outboard side. The double cabin  in the bow mirrors that in the port bow – with double berth and storage.

This might be of interest: http://www.catsailingnews.com/2015/12/shuttleworth-32-building-dream.html It actually looks great in all white, before the stripes go on.

I keep hoping that the Packs will post a weight for the cat as launched. sans engines/mast etc. They scored the foam heavily to get the compound curves and there appears to be a lot resin in the cuts - does it make a significant weight difference?
Well he does say <6000 lbs but whether that is the designer's weight or the built weight who knows. His contact information is there and the YouTube videos are pretty good. Interestingly it's a 32 in the thread I posted but a 31, which is one of the sizes I'd heard of for the Shuttleworth designs, not 32...on YouTube.
already sent one email a few days ago but no reply to date. seems as if they are interested in selling hulls/complete boats? in the message from Tom we see "The 45 should be much faster than the 32. The difference is in the weight (drag), typically about 4000 pounds against 30,000 pounds. " 4000 lbs= 1814 kgs But launched weight would be real nice to know
Maybe 31 is the old slanted stem and 32 is the vertical variety
quite possible. not sure that such a light boat would benefit from a vertical stem I've seen videos where the vertical stem creates a fountain while underway - suppose it depends on how fine the bow angle is

We've seen this boat while she was being painted and also when back in the water. She is beautifully done and seems to float well above her lines, but then again the interior isn't complete. I'm pretty sure the 32 is a 31 with a slightly longer stern. Shuttleworth has come out with a design to extend the bows of the 31/32 and make them wave piercing. Here's a link to a youtube video showing the Fossailing Shuttleworth 31's with the bows retrofitted. http://youtu.be/plp2WqY8JB4
Thanks SMJ. Nice video, the bows look good. I recall a comment from Richard Woods that you can't just change the bow shape without making other adjustments. Maybe the mast rake changed??
here is a short video of the fossailing31s before the stem change? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_GJqtFoc80 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jA4HKCHckDU would the reverse bow add buoyancy forward and stop the bows from burying? closer view of old stem in action https://vimeo.com/channels/248940/15918879

I always thought the original bow was pretty steep anyway, certainly compared to a Kelsall, so marginal gain I would have thought unless additional work was done to increase the prismatic as well ? Those Fos sail boats are also pretty heavily loaded too which would have a big effect on how they pitch in a seaway.

Willie Pack here. When we lifted her back in the water the crane weighed her at 5200lbs without mast. Engines were on. She is fairly heavy because of the grid cut foam on the contours. I will do the next one differently. After consulting Shuttleworth should perform just fine with the added weight. I would say maybe 4 or 500 pounds too heavy. She is 32'3". Shuttleworth extended the transoms to even out the added buoyancy of the plumb bows. I made the bows plum mostly for aesthetics. I'll look thru some of the other questions here and respond hopefully tomorrow. In the meantime here is my email address. [email protected] PS. My sails are long overdue. Hopefully Quantum will have them soon and I'll post some drone footage of the sea trials.
I'll leave you all tonight with this cool email I received from Shuttleworth when I asked about his favorite sails. Re sails. I do not have a favourite at the moment. You need someone who understands that this boat will sail as close to the wind as a racing monohull. A big mistake made but the ignorant is to cut the main too full. They may not believe you but you will outsail any equivalent sized monohull upwind.
glad to have you guys active and in the water - now for sails 400-500 lbs of excess weight sounds expensive unless its all in plywood but you have the molds and that is a real plus
Hey Willie, We were in the area last Thursday and stopped by to look at your boat. The rig looks great and looks like she will be a screaming fast cat! AJ

Absolutely packsail; find a sailmaker that knows and understands multihulls. I'm not sure that cheapest is best, you need quality sails that maintain their shape over a long time. That might mean paying a little more upfront. EDIT: I see from further above that you have ordered Quantum so thats a good start.

Tek-35 and love everything about it. The "flared sides" or knuckle give the more room than any 40'-45' cat I've been on without compromising performance at the waterline. I've never had any trouble rafting up or tieing to an bulkhead. You just have to have the appropriate fenders. Shuttleworths designs were ahead of their time and are still leading edge. Well thought out . Good Luck with your search for a .

Boat: Far From Turtle: 1980 Pearson 424 cutter rigged ketch
- a structural to be exact. Spent most of my 30 year career inspecting construction sites dealing with who treated me as tho I'm stupid because I'm female.

I still had to protect the public from unsafe construction, even tho every one was rude to me on the site and invalidated everything I said or did. My, the law was still on my side. I wrote em up and made em build it right.

yeah I think I can handle building a boat after inspecting 20 story buildings.

But you reminded me I don't want to.

, FL. that makes cats and has made some pretty large ones at that, I have watched them build there new complex and produce some nice boats, of course Goetz up here in is another high quality builder who recently launched "Il Mostro" for Puma steered by our local friend Ken Read and has proven to be a fast and better built boat than the other VO70's, this boat builder has built some Wally boats as well and that means high quality. At the moment they are in receivership but are open to new projects. We up here have some of the best builders and suppliers concentrated in one area, from spars (Hall) to (North, Quantum, Shore) to installations and (Harken) and Southport if you want Bio-Diesel setup, Your boat could be easily launched and sent down river picking up the as you out once the hits the , plus I couldn't think of a better place to be for awhile as your developed.

I remember being on the Chesapeake and sailing along when a Shuttleworth 47 past me with a reef in the main and a , Wow she was fast and I was on a tri (the same one that I was on when we won the 95 nationals in , and which I designed the deck layout that appeared on the newer designs.. long story as to how that happened), I felt as if we were parked, with all that said, I wish you good luck in finding what you are looking for, And don't let anyone tell you "you can't do it". Seems to me your building still stands while people are patching their boats to keep them afloat.

management, separate , might make for a cheaper boat.

Still not sure it won't , with the right combination. See the post in front of this one. Just needs more work on the part of the owner - I can project manage a collection of professionals and products - just can't do the work or the design, myself.

Do know that we have tried to 30 year old for $100K and needed to add $15K material costs alone immediately in replacement of worn out chain plates and tankage, not to mention liners and heads. Old boats need the equivalent of $50K in updates right out the slip. Figured if we weren't going to buy a catamaran, would buy as as possible in the . No free lunches there either.

I figure my knowledge and time is going to be worth $30 to $50K in any or commission project.

$750K is sadly very out of my league. Rediculous as it may sound, our is more like $200 to $250K for a catamaran either new or preowned.

Again, I apologize for flaming you. Your advice was well intentioned, and probably quite accurate.

First Mate.

, especially one that is cruise-ready. That being said, there are some incredible deals out there right now and I have no doubt that even if you do not find your 'dream boat', you will be able to find a number of very sound, well-designed, well-built, well-equipped boats that can be brought back to bristol shape within your price range. Keep in mind that as the economy rebounds, prices are apt to rebound as well. Really, there may be no time better than the present.

  21. We Are Considering Commissioning a John Shuttleworth Catamaran

You can probably buy a good (not perfect) high performance catamaran and refit for $400,000. Finding a boat will be hard work, figure on 5 serious candidates at $20,000 each (travel to Mexico, NZ, OZ, survey etc.) but that still leaves you $250,000 in the bank - about 5 years of relatively luxurious cruising. -Scott.
