Solandge: On board the 85m Lürrsen superyacht designed for pure enjoyment
With Lürssen’s 85 metre superyacht Solandge , every bit makes sure you are having a good time, every element is about living life to the fullest. And it’s not by accident. Solandge , says Richard Masters, the yacht’s project and operations manager, had a long design incubation.
‘The owners had another, smaller Lürssen that they bought on the brokerage market and refitted,’ Masters says. ‘They knew they wanted to build their own yacht at Lürssen, so in 2007 signed a contract for a slot that wouldn’t even become available until 2010, which gave them a tremendous amount of time to refine their ideas. They looked at a great many yachts in the meantime, while a special team was assembled to help the shipyard implement the owners’ plans.’
Solandge is nearly 20 metres longer and one metre wider than her predecessor, and offers one more guest cabin – a full-beam VIP. But as chief engineer Travis Ludbrook says, ‘In terms of the technology that was available to the new build, the nine years makes a tremendous difference.’
Along with design details and an insistence on the comfort of everyone aboard, sound and vibration engineering were two hot-button issues. Decibel levels were part of the construction contract, although Masters says the yard exceeded the requirement by 20 per cent in some places.
Delivered in 2013, Solandge is based on a modern 80 metre hull and engineering platform similar to that of Lürssen superyacht Phoenix2 , superyacht Ace and Quattroelle , ‘The yard’s record keeping is exceptional; if they find something they think is an improvement, whether is it a material or a process, they just adopt it.’ The folding and lowering stern stairs, an adaptation of those developed for use on Lürssen’s 88m superyacht Quattroelle , launched in 2012 , are a good example.
All custom yachts by definition present an owner’s vision. With a yacht beyond 60 metres LOA, even a bit of tentativeness translates to a great deal of cautious, repetitive conservatism or worse, confusion that goes beyond eclecticism. Solandge is innocent on both counts. Both Masters and the yacht’s interior designer, Eileen Rodriguez , begin their description of the yacht and her build process with the phrase, ‘The owner had a vision.’ That would seem to be an understatement. So would the designer’s comment, ‘They like bright colour.’
Espen Øino was asked to create a profile design based on the owners’ experience with the previous vessel. This included all guest suites on the main deck along with a rather grand saloon area and an owners’ deck above. During the design period, however, Øino says it became clear that they were prepared to push boundaries and explore more innovative exterior forms.
The final product is a mix of gracious, soft shapes and aggressive hard lines and knuckles; opposite but complementary languages that generate energy. The curves, Øino notes, are mostly in the longitudinal planes with the hard edges on the transverse. The exterior paint scheme, especially the white sheer line, adds emphasis. In combination with the white boot stripe, it optically lowers the yacht’s massive freeboard at the transom, making her seem less formidable from the water.
Step two in the brief was to create many places for guests and family to hang out together or chill-out alone. Øino’s directive was to give each deck and space a distinctive function plus create the supporting furniture and built-ins such as bars, buffets, dining areas, a pool and two hot tubs. With so much space to work with, he was able to incorporate an exterior cinema and nightclub with DJ station on the top deck, an indoor/outdoor gym, a sheltered main-deck reception area aft and a private outdoor seating area in front of the owners’ suite. Build captain Maxx Ainsworth adds, ‘We were able to fit in a substantial tender garage, a full dive centre and a sauna aft with access to the swim platform.’
Pushing boundaries was also an aspect of the yacht’s interior, both in scope and detail. To achieve an open plan living area on main deck, the spacious aft deck opens onto a multifunctional saloon of more than 172 square metres, unbroken by supports.
Setting the tone for the exuberant, joyful fantasy named Solandge is the saloon entrance, two stunning floor-to-ceiling panels of LED backlit amethyst quartz. The stone is sliced thin and pieced together like a mosaic and sandwiched between clear glass. To port it is flanked by a Bechstein piano and to starboard by a Venetian console table. The large bar on port is also decked with amethyst and honey onyx, the stone that borders the hardwood floor.
Opposite the bar is a cosy seating area, then a massive dining table fitted fore and aft under Schonbek chandeliers dripping with amethyst and rose quartz crystals, and neatly engineered not to rattle. Forward of the dining area is a much larger seating area facing a fireplace and a TV screen concealed behind a painting of a musician. This is just one of the numerous spots throughout the yacht that is wired for karaoke – the owners sent their build engineer to discover the robust, high-end karaoke equipment used in the best clubs and bring the same Studio Evolution system to Solandge.
The yacht is divided at its axis by an atrium lobby dominated by a 15 metre lighted sculpture that has come to be known as the tree of life, inspired by the owner’s request to have something running the entire height of the vessel from the tank deck. Made in California, the sculpture contains 1,423 points of light, and is encircled by a magnificent stainless steel and leather bannister that anchors the floating staircase.
Forward of the lobby, the guest cabins are more modern, each with a different colour scheme. One is convertible to a guest office/media centre, while the VIP suite can be converted from a cabin with an attached sitting room to two separate cabins. Each half makes a spacious cabin, but together, the suite with its large windows, wardrobes and bath seems suitable as a master. That is, until you see the master suite on the deck above.
On the owner’s deck, the apartment includes a private office, his dressing room and bathroom, her dressing room and bathroom, and the cabin itself with 180-degree views overlooking the bow, outdoor seating and a private spa pool. All the spa pools on board are mosaic-clad infinity tubs mounted above deck level. Water flows over the top edge into a recess below teak grating. This keeps the pool and its surround from being a major, view-blocking structure.
Back inside the owner’s suite, a casual sitting room aft has a fireplace and a nautical theme, with a colour scheme similar to the upper saloon. Handmade Italian furniture includes a small table and chairs, a lady’s desk with a leather top and a chest of drawers, while hand-painted backlit window mullions depict themes from the Garden of Eden.
Guests can enjoy a top-notch spa facility aft on the bridge deck. Facilities consist of a spacious sauna, steam room, massage room and a beauty salon connecting to the gym and outdoor swimming pool. A colour-shifting glass-bubble wall provides ambiance and privacy for the massage suite.
The sun deck is large and multifunctional as per the owners’ directives. One beach-chic section features U-shaped seating under draped tent material. The centre deck focuses on a horseshoe-shaped bar with gold mosaic finish, while tucked away to starboard is a romantic bed-size platform piled high with cushions under a twinkly star overhead. With the open sunning space in full entertainment mode, the deck hosted 60 people for a New Year’s party. Guests thoroughly enjoyed a unique dance floor above the spa pool.
‘The large exterior living spaces reflect the current trend for outdoor decks that mirror all the interior functions for guest living,’ says Øino, ‘Arranging spaces to lounge, eat, drink and play becomes a major factor. The outdoor furniture on Solandge is complex and incorporates edge lighting and features that allow entertaining to be spontaneous.’
Which is a good place to bring up the service aspects built into Solandge : they are exceptional. ‘The owners care about service, but they care even more about the well-being of their crew,’ says Masters, ‘and he respects their input.’ In fact, 11 of the crew came with Captain Ainsworth from the previous boat, including a pair of sisters and a father and son team. Superyacht crew areas are designed with care, and crew pathways throughout the boat are ample and clever, so no need to squeeze by each other with a load of laundry or supplies.
Reflecting on the project, process and its conclusion, Rodriguez says, ‘The owners wanted every inch of this vessel to be special and have a meaning. It’s difficult to design 85 metre of “special”, but we have accomplished this for them in a very controlled way. We think it’s their dream come true.’ And a joyful one at that.
First published in the March 2014 edition of BOAT International. Solandge has since changed ownership after she was sold by Moran Yacht & Ship and SSH Maritime in 2017. She is currently available for charter with Fraser .

Mega Yacht Solandge
Lit up against the night skies, Solandge is a sight to behold! She’s a captivating superyacht built by Lurssen in 2013 featuring an Espen Oeino designed exterior and an Aileen Rodriguez created interior. Solandge is 85m (279ft) long, has six decks and many outdoor entertainment areas. Her curved and sleek form along with impressive size says all there is to know about this luxurious superyacht.
With elegant interior design Solandge also boasts a sauna and a fully-equipped gymnasium. There’s also a beauty salon that offers massages and a fantastic kitchen area. She can accommodate up to 16 guests in eight state rooms along with sleeping 29 crew. Other areas include a bar with piano, a movie theatre, dining hall and jet stream swimming pool too.
Delivered in 2013 Solandge is one of the world’s largest superyachts. She is an exceptional vessel that is engineered for self-sufficiency during long voyages at sea. Opulence oozes from every corner of Solandge with attention to detail everywhere. The folding and lowering stairs at the stern are a sign of the success she enjoys, an innovative idea indeed!
The eye-catching exterior and superb interior
Solandge’s exterior comprises of multi-functional living spaces. Whether it’s relaxation or spending time in the sun, you’ll find a private spot on one of the decks. Facilities on board include buffet meals, two hot tubs, a plethora of dining areas, a swimming pool and fully-stocked bars. The décor is modern and pleasing on the eye while the soft lines of the superstructure are modern and sleek, very impressive.
The beautiful interior of Solandge comprises of materials like marble, granite and alternative woods. These have been fused to create a feel of quality that you’d find in a five-star hotel. Think of Solandge as a floating hotel to get an idea of what life is like when cruising to exotic destinations.
The main deck of Solandge has many intricate and unique features. The flooring has been designed with dark wood and onyx inlays on which there’s a magnificent sculpture known as “the Tree of Life”. This is a lighted sculpture which is 16m high running from the tank deck right up to the bridge deck. It has more than 1,200 points of light which look like tropical rain drops making the coloured glass flowers more than life-like.
With what appears to be a “floating staircase” surrounding the sculpture the whole scene is one of startling surprise. The nearby elevator has leather panels in different colours while an antique Venetian mirror and hand-carved art glass finish this area off.
Moving onto the main saloon, aft of the foyer marvel at the two floor-to-ceiling panels of LED backlit amethyst quartz. This saloon provides a huge living area with a central dining table which was constructed with burl inlays and decorated with semi-precious stones. The amethyst and rose quartz chandeliers light the room up and sparkle with their beautiful colours.
A large TV screen and fireplace can be found forward of the dining table along with a pleasant seating area. Further aft, there’s a curved bar made from art glass and purple fabric panels that perfectly match the amethyst stone counter. With these classic and contemporary touches, the design of Solandge blends with the materials used. This provides guests with a warm ambience throughout the vessel.
On half of the upper deck there’s the owner’s apartment with private office. A his and hers dressing room and bathrooms incorporate rose quartz counters, wood, glass, mother of pearl, gold leaf and ceiling inserts. Enormous windows with views over the private spa pool and outdoor seating area create a light, airy environment. Venetian furniture completes this space along with 14 hand-carved, back-lit glazed columns which have been placed between the windows. Each column represents a botanical scene to bring the outdoors in.
Spacious and exquisite accommodation
The VIP state room has high ceilings and large windows making it very spacious. The woodwork, green and gold colours including soft lighting, finish this room off perfectly. Five guest state rooms and a guest office are situated aft of the main foyer. These cabins and the VIP state room are flexible: they can be transformed into two separate cabins if required.
The upper deck lounge or sky lounge has been decorated in earthy colours with metallic accents. Different tones, textures and bronze details in the picture frames as well as the book cases bring a sense of nature to this space. An amazing three tonne bronze and crystal glass dome looks down on the scene.
On the aft deck, leading out of the upper deck lounge are floor-to-ceiling glass doors. There’s an expansive living space out here that is for the use of guests. Whether you wish to dine here, have a drink or just chill out, there’s lots of furniture, great lighting and a lovely atmosphere. Glass panels protect sunbathers from the wind while triangular awnings on carbon fibre poles provide shade from the hot sun. Mosaic-clad infinity tubs are mounted above the deck level and the tub on the aft deck has a 6m jet flow! After spending a while in the infinity tub, relax on one of the sun beds, or have a refreshing drink from the bar, heavenly!
What to do?
There’s no time to get bored on Solandge. Indulge yourself in a spa, spend time in the steam room or in the sauna. How about having a massage in the beauty salon? This salon is connected to a gym and outdoor pool. The sun deck is just a step away from the upper decks. During the day, this is a great place to sit in the sun and catch the rays or take a seat under the draped tent to stay a bit cooler.
With its horseshoe-shaped bar finished in gold mosaic, the sun deck also has a bed-sized platform with lots of comfortable cushions to sit on. What a wonderful setting to watch the stars go by in the evening.
There’s a spectacular beach club too which offers a fabulous atmosphere for guests who like to cool down in the breeze. It has a shower and sauna along with a pantry for the crew who can make you a snack or prepare a drink. This is also the storage area for tenders and toys. They include an inflatable rib centre console tender, wake board tender and lots of water toys, awesome!
When the day is over the whole deck can be changed into an entertainment area. Glass Perspex is used to cover the Jacuzzi which in turn transforms into a dance floor. When the colourful lights are switched on, the DJ booth flies into action with dance music and there’s even a large screen for music videos.
Treated water is used for the pool on the bridge and the Jacuzzi on the top deck. The water is stored in holding tanks so the pool and Jacuzzi can have fresh water poured in whenever anyone wishes to use them.
Last but by no means least – the crew
Eleven crew members work on board Solandge to make guests’ chartering vacation one of the best ever. Access for the crew from both levels of the engine room makes traffic jams a thing of the past. Crew pathways are well-appointed and wide so laundry and supplies can be carried to their location without any hassle.
A separate elevator is also useful to transfer crew members, wine or goods without disturbing the guests. Every eventuality was catered for when Solandge was originally designed. Each space on board has been utilised thoughtfully with guests’ comfort a top priority. If you’re planning to reserve a charter yacht vacation soon, look no further than iconic Solandge!

Inside insane concept for 700ft £1BILLION megayacht ‘Goliath’ with hangar for four aircraft & its own submarine

AN INCREDIBLE mega yacht so large that has its own submarine could double as a billionaires playground and a research lab
Plans for the 700ft Goliath yacht includes research equipment, jet skis, helicopters and three heated pools.
The vessel is touted to cost a whopping £1 billion dollars.
Part of the Goliath series, the Q-quest yacht designed by California based yacht designer Steve Kozloff.
The massive research floater has been described as an expedition dream, providing plenty of lab space for research, experimentation, and medical intervention.
The mega-yacht is also loaded with plenty of exploration vehicles, including including six hydrofoil tenders, two seaplanes, three jet skies, two helicopters, a U-Worx Research submarine, and a garage for two overland SUVs.

A separate hangar at midship stores two Cessna Caravan Seaplanes, selected for their ability to transport resupply across long distances.
The three upper decks are reserved for the owner and guests, offering 18 VIP cabins and a primary suite with a private balcony and pool.
It also boasts five-star amenities like a beach club, Turkish bath, three heated pools, yoga studio, and a 20-person theatre.
The mega yacht also has an impressive 3,000-square-foot owner’s suite with panoramic views at the bow, a large spa and pool , a basketball court above the flybridge, another pool with a shaded lounge area above the hangar, a dining room at the stern, and a solarium with a second dining area, plus a beach club with a full bar.

A total of 26 owner’s guests will reside on the three upper decks, while an operating crew of 150 including doctors, scientists, pilots, nurses, research engineers will reside in unspecified quarters.
Luxury aside, the predominately research vessel would carry a complete oceanographic laboratory, a medical laboratory with MRI and X-ray imaging, ophthalmology department, and dentist suite, and as many as 20 hospital beds with 5G-connected robotic surgery facilities.
Propelled by thrusters powered by batteries, the vessel can reach a top speed of 20 knots with a range of 20,000 nautical miles.
Kozloff told autoevolution : "The mission of G-Quest, a 705-foot yacht, allows its owner to oversee their philanthropic efforts while living in luxury at sea.
"It is designed for both humanitarian and research objectives."
The G-quest isn't the only luxury yacht to boast a helipad .
Plans for the "Floating Dubai" vessel include an enormous pool deck, a relaxing spa and not one, but two enormous helipads on board.
Christened UAE One, the superboat was designed by Milan-based Enzo Manca, who collaborated with a sheikh to make it the flagship of the United Arab Emirates.
In a statement, Manca said: “The idea of UAE One was born in 2020, during a very special meeting between me and a sheikh of the United Arab Emirates on vacation in Italy.
“The sultan was very clear and categorical, he wanted something really special and unique.”
UAE One is inspired by historic defence ships, yet its curving lines distinguishes it from other vessels on the high seas.
It also stands over 130 feet tall and has tinted windows for extra privacy in true military style.
With nine decks and a total area of slightly over 30,000 square feet, the monster yacht is designed to give guests, diplomats, and kings the finest experience possible.
There is an owner's suite, eight cabins, and 14 mini suites within.
The staff has 35 cabins as well.
The main deck, meanwhile, has a beautiful 18-metre geometric swimming pool.
There are also several outdoor lounges for sundowners, a platform for ocean swims, and a wellness centre with a spa on board.
Due to the necessity of quick and simple transportation to and from a flagship, UAE One is able to maintain an extensive fleet of land, air, and sea vehicles.
The yacht features one hangar, two helipads ideal for foreign delegates, and a "mini-internal port" for tenders and submarines.
