The Cutlass 27 Sailboat

The Cutlass 27 is a classic small fast cruiser from the 1970s, designed by Eric White and Alan Hill, and built by Marine Construction Ltd. in the UK. It is a pretty boat with a long keel, a sloop rig, and a counter stern.

Summary Analysis of Published Design Ratios for the  Cutlass 27

'How to Avoid Buying the Wrong Sailboat', an eBook by Dick McClary

1. A Sail Area/Displacement Ratio of just 13.4 suggests that she'll need a stiff breeze to get her going. In any other conditions, unless you've got plenty of time on your hands, motor-sailing will be the way to go

2. A Ballast/Displacement Ratio of 50 means that she'll stand up well to her canvas in a blow, enabling her to power through the waves.

3. A Displacement/Length Ratio of 363, tells us she's firmly in the ultraheavy displacement category. Load her up as much as you like and her performance will be hardly affected, not that it was ever startling. Few if any sailboats are built to this displacement category these days - but they remain popular with some of the most diehard traditional old salts.

4. Ted Brewer's Comfort Ratio of 30.1 suggests that crew comfort in a seaway is similar to what you would associate with the motion of a moderate offshore cruising boat - most seasoned sailors can handle that.

5. Her Capsize Screening Formula of 1.7 tells us that she would be a better choice of sailboat for ocean passage-making than one with a CS rating of more than 2.0.

Cruisers' Questions about this Sailboat...

How many Cutlass 27 sailboats were built?

About 200 Cutlass 27 sailboats were built between 1967 and the mid-1980s. The first boats were called just "Cutlass" , and later ones were renamed "Cutlass 27" after some design changes in 1974.

How does the Cutlass 27 sail?

The Cutlass 27 sails very well, with a light and sensitive helm, and a good performance in various wind conditions. It is a good sea boat, reasonably quick and easy to handle. It has a sail area of 338ft 2 for the main and genoa, and a ballast ratio of over 50%.

What are some features and equipment of the Cutlass 27?

The Cutlass 27 has a low coachroof line, a spacious cockpit, and a simple deck layout. It has four berths in two cabins, a saloon and a forecabin, but the interior is very plainly finished and small compared to more modern boats. Some boats may have windvane self-steering gear, a modified main hatch, or other customizations for long offshore passages.

How much does a Cutlass 27 cost?

The price of a Cutlass 27 may vary depending on the condition, age, location, and equipment of the boat. According to some online listings, the average asking price for a Cutlass 27 in the UK is around £5,000 to £10,000 as of July 2023.

What are some similar boats to the Cutlass 27?

Some similar boats to the Cutlass 27 are the Folkboat, which was the inspiration for the Cutlass hull design, the Contessa 26, which is another classic long-keeled sloop from the same era, and the Albin Vega, which is another popular small cruiser with good sailing qualities.

What are some common problems with the Cutlass 27?

One of the common problems with the Cutlass 27 sailboat is that the interior is very plainly finished and small compared to more modern boats. Some owners may find the lack of space and amenities uncomfortable or inconvenient for longer cruises.

Another problem is that the boat is significantly under-rigged, meaning that it has less sail area than most similar sailboats. This can affect the boat's speed and performance in light winds and may require more frequent use of the engine.

A third problem is that the boat has a long keel, which makes it more difficult to handle in tight spaces or shallow waters. The boat may also have more drag and less manoeuvrability than a fin-keeled boat.

These problems are not necessarily deal breakers, as they are balanced by the boat's many positive qualities, such as its beauty, stability, comfort, and seakeeping abilities. However, they are worth considering before buying or sailing a Cutlass 27 sailboat.

The above answers were drafted by sailboat-cruising.com using GPT-4 (OpenAI’s large-scale language-generation model) as a research assistant to develop source material; to the best of our knowledge,  we believe them to be accurate.

Review of Cutlass 27

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Cutlass 27 is equipped with a long keel. A full keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 1.37 - 1.47 meter (4.49 - 4.79 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Cutlass 27 is 1.62, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Cutlass 27 is about 94 kg/cm, alternatively 528 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 94 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 528 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 11m 2 (118 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

, and . The first boats, originally called just the "Cutlass", were built in 1967/8, and within two years over 100 had been sold. As was common with boat builders in the 1960s/70s Marcon always offered the boats either as completed boats (£2,700 in 1977) or as kits for home completion at about £1,000 less.

In 1974 the design was altered to increase headroom, with a slight increase in ballast and displacement, plus other minor alterations, and renamed the "Cutlass 27", these boats remaining in production until around the mid-1980s, though the last of these boats were sold only as bare hulls or kits, as Marcon were concentrating on producing bigger boats. About 200 of these boats in total are believed to have been built.

The Cutlass hull design is clearly a Folkboat development, with a short counter stern added, and shares the speed and seakeeping abilities of the breed. She has a ballast ratio of over 50%, and by modern expectations quite narrow beam.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Broker's Comments

The Cutlass 27 is the upgraded original Cutlass, with greater headroom and displacement. These boats were solidly built, with attractive lines that provide a classic look and serious, fast, sailing capability.

This version has a more recent inboard diesel engine, with low hours and would benefit, in places, from some cosmetic TLC.

The boat has been sensibly priced to encourage a quick sale.

This is an opportunity to acquire an affordable classic which, after some attention, would catch the eye, both under sail and in port and provide many miles of rewarding sailing.

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Description.

The Cutlass 27 is a 27ft masthead sloop designed by Eric White & Alan Hill and built in fiberglass. Since 1967 170 have been built. The Cutlass 27 is a heavy sailboat which is under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. The Cutlass 27 was designed by Eric White of Marine Construction UK Ltd. (Marcon) and Alan Hill, one of the pioneers of GRP yacht design, who was responsible for a wide range of successful designs including the Trident 24, Sabre 27 and Moody Halberdier. The Cutlass hull design is clearly a Folk Boat development, with a short counter stern added, and shares the speed and seakeeping abilities of the breed. She has a ballast ratio of over 50%, and by modern expectations quite narrow beam. Trixie is a well-equipped version of the Cutlass 27 she has a radar, heating, chart plotter, electric windlass complemented by a new Rocna anchor. Admittedly she does require a little attention but a couple of weekends would see her shipshape and Bristol Fashion and ready for new adventures.

All of the electrics on Trixie were updated in 2022 including the nav lights, battery charger, hot air heating and Victron battery monitor. She also had new heads and some of the windows refurbished and a new gearbox

This typical Alan Hill-designed long-keeled cruiser was built by Marine Construction (Marcon) and first launched in 1968 as the Cutlass, but extensively updated in 1974 as the Cutlass 27. With a long production run, numbers reached nearly 200. She has four berths, 5ft l0in headroom, and basic cooking and navigating facilities in a somewhat cramped interior by modern standards. She is a good seaboat – reasonably quick and easy to handle. Construction was stout but unsophisticated. Many were home-completed.

LOA 8.2m (27ft), LWL 6.1m (20ft), beam 2.33m (7ft 8in), draught 1.37m (4ft 6in), displacement 6,496kg (13,227lb). Price guide: £8,000 to £12,000.

Broker Remarks

Cutlass 27 sailing yacht for sale. The Cutlass 27 was built by the leading pioneers of GRP yacht design. First built in the late 1960's they were in production until the mid 1980's, approximately 200 are believed to have been made. Tarikatua is a beautiful example that has been fully restored. She is now lying ashore and ready for viewing!

Accommodation

Tarikatua has 4 berths. There are 2 in the fore cabin which also has a deck hatch, shelves and windows. The saloon incorporates 2 settee berths, a galley, chart table, storage lockers and an adjustable, removable dining table. The galley area has a Plastimo gas cooker with grill. The heads, with portholes, wet hanging locker and shelves contains a Jabsco marine WC and is separated by folding doors from the saloon and fore cabin.

Mechanical and Rigging

The Yanmar 1GM10 engine was removed and overhauled in 2103, including a new water pump.

There is 1 x 12 volt battery charged by the engine alternator.

The strong traditional design with a short counter stern and long, lead encapsulated, keel gives a ballast ratio of over 50% which ensures excellent speed and sea keeping abilities in most conditions. She carries her sail exceptionally well in a good breeze, yet remains manageable and can be sailed single handed with ease if required.

Tarikatua has only had 4 owners from new. She has just been professionally restored and looks an absolute picture. Her classic lines make her a boat to be proud of. Work undertaken:

  • Hull professionally resprayed
  • Exterior varnish work stripped and recoated
  • Alloy mast resprayed
  • bilges and lockers painted out
  • Gate valves checked & serviced/renewed where necessary
  • Gas supply upgraded and tested
  • Hull epoxy primed and antifouled (2018)
  • Mast step strengthened.

Broker's Comments

The Cutlass 27 has pretty, long and fluid lines which denote her proven sea keeping qualities. This is certainly a strong and capable sailing boat.

There have been some recent works undertaken (including full re wire) and she has a fresh coat of antifoul. This boat was built to last - but it would be fair to say that this particular example would benefit from some cosmetic repairs and general TLC.

With a little investment and a bit of time this could be the perfect boat for anyone interested in doing some extended cruising or just searching for a boat that would look after you at sea; she would comfortably cruise with a couple of people. The owner has sailed her for four weeks in the summer each year for four years and has "thoroughly enjoyed it".

All in all - a good looking and robust sailing boat, realistically priced which would benefit from some tidying up - but would be sure to pay you back in adventures.

54' Irwin 1990

A Rare GemRefreshing to find a boat that is lavishly maintainedand constantly upgraded

VIEW THE 360 DEGREE VIRTUAL TOURThe Irwin 54 is one of the most popular sailing yachts over 50' ever built. Find out why

For over 20 Years, the current owner had an open check book tocontinually upgrade and lovingly care for this amazing yacht

Over 250 Irwin 52’s and 54’s were built. First introduced in 1976, The Irwin 52 quickly became the  most  popular cruising center cockpit sailboat on the market.  In 1988, the boat evolved into the Irwin 54 with a major redesign of the hull, deck and interior. “Patience“ is one of the last Irwin 54’s and possibly the best ever built.

“Patience” was ordered new by her original owner in 1989 and commissioned in 1990. The concept was to utilize the basic clever design and create a vessel of not just outstanding beauty, but also a yacht that is flawlessly executed and engineered to a standard normally seen only in larger vessels. The spectacular result is not only a "go anywhere" yacht, but also one of absolute luxury, total privacy and short-handed style.

The second owner purchased "Patience" for a two year Caribbean cruise and then sold  her to the  current owner.Current owner has owned this boat for the past 20 years!
