Cutlass 27 is a 27 ′ 0 ″ / 8.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Alan F. Hill and built by Marine Construction Ltd. starting in 1967. Rig and SailsAuxilary power, accomodations, calculations. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more. Classic hull speed formula: Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL Sail Area / Displacement RatioA measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more. SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3 - SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement RatioA measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Ballast / Displacement * 100 Displacement / Length RatioA measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more. D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³ - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort RatioThis ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more. Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 ) - D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening FormulaThis formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more. These boats were solidly built, with attractive lines that provide a classic look and serious, fast, sailing capability. This version has a more recent inboard diesel engine, with low hours and would benefit, in places, from some cosmetic TLC. The boat has been sensibly priced to encourage a quick sale. This is an opportunity to acquire an affordable classic which, after some attention, would catch the eye, both under sail and in port and provide many miles of rewarding sailing. These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered. Owners FAQ'sHow long have you owned the boat for, why are you selling her. AccommodationDescription. The Cutlass 27 is a 27ft masthead sloop designed by Eric White & Alan Hill and built in fiberglass. Since 1967 170 have been built. The Cutlass 27 is a heavy sailboat which is under powered. It is very stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. The Cutlass 27 was designed by Eric White of Marine Construction UK Ltd. (Marcon) and Alan Hill, one of the pioneers of GRP yacht design, who was responsible for a wide range of successful designs including the Trident 24, Sabre 27 and Moody Halberdier. The first boats, originally called just the "Cutlass", were built in 1967/8, and within two years over 100 had been sold. As was common with boat builders in the 1960s/70s Marcon always offered the boats either as completed boats (£2,700 in 1977) or as kits for home completion at about £1,000 less. In 1974 the design was altered to increase headroom, with a slight increase in ballast and displacement, plus other minor alterations, and renamed the "Cutlass 27", these boats remaining in production until around the mid-1980s, though the last of these boats were sold only as bare hulls or kits, as Marcon were concentrating on producing bigger boats. About 200 of these boats in total are believed to have been built. The Cutlass hull design is clearly a Folk Boat development, with a short counter stern added, and shares the speed and seakeeping abilities of the breed. She has a ballast ratio of over 50%, and by modern expectations quite narrow beam. Trixie is a well-equipped version of the Cutlass 27 she has a radar, heating, chart plotter, electric windlass complemented by a new Rocna anchor. Admittedly she does require a little attention but a couple of weekends would see her shipshape and Bristol Fashion and ready for new adventures. All of the electrics on Trixie were updated in 2022 including the nav lights, battery charger, hot air heating and Victron battery monitor. This typical Alan Hill-designed long-keeled cruiser was built by Marine Construction (Marcon) and first launched in 1968 as the Cutlass, but extensively updated in 1974 as the Cutlass 27. With a long production run, numbers reached nearly 200. She has four berths, 5ft l0in headroom, and basic cooking and navigating facilities in a somewhat cramped interior by modern standards. She is a good seaboat – reasonably quick and easy to handle. Construction was stout but unsophisticated. Many were home-completed. LOA 8.2m (27ft), LWL 6.1m (20ft), beam 2.33m (7ft 8in), draught 1.37m (4ft 6in), displacement 6,496kg (13,227lb). Price guide: £8,000 to £12,000. Cutlass 27 Boat for Sale- accommodation

Broker Remarks Cutlass 27 sailing yacht for sale. The Cutlass 27 was built by the leading pioneers of GRP yacht design. First built in the late 1960's they were in production until the mid 1980's, approximately 200 are believed to have been made. Tarikatua is a beautiful example that has been fully restored. She is now lying ashore and ready for viewing! Accommodation Tarikatua has 4 berths. There are 2 in the fore cabin which also has a deck hatch, shelves and windows. The saloon incorporates 2 settee berths, a galley, chart table, storage lockers and an adjustable, removable dining table. The galley area has a Plastimo gas cooker with grill. The heads, with portholes, wet hanging locker and shelves contains a Jabsco marine WC and is separated by folding doors from the saloon and fore cabin. Mechanical and Rigging The Yanmar 1GM10 engine was removed and overhauled in 2103, including a new water pump. There is 1 x 12 volt battery charged by the engine alternator. The strong traditional design with a short counter stern and long, lead encapsulated, keel gives a ballast ratio of over 50% which ensures excellent speed and sea keeping abilities in most conditions. She carries her sail exceptionally well in a good breeze, yet remains manageable and can be sailed single handed with ease if required. Tarikatua has only had 4 owners from new. She has just been professionally restored and looks an absolute picture. Her classic lines make her a boat to be proud of. Work undertaken: - Hull professionally resprayed
- Exterior varnish work stripped and recoated
- Alloy mast resprayed
- bilges and lockers painted out
- Gate valves checked & serviced/renewed where necessary
- Gas supply upgraded and tested
- Hull epoxy primed and antifouled (2018)
- Mast step strengthened.

This is certainly a strong and capable sailing boat. There have been some recent works undertaken (including full re wire) and she has a fresh coat of antifoul. This boat was built to last - but it would be fair to say that this particular example would benefit from some cosmetic repairs and general TLC. With a little investment and a bit of time this could be the perfect boat for anyone interested in doing some extended cruising or just searching for a boat that would look after you at sea; she would comfortably cruise with a couple of people. The owner has sailed her for four weeks in the summer each year for four years and has "thoroughly enjoyed it". All in all - a good looking and robust sailing boat, realistically priced which would benefit from some tidying up - but would be sure to pay you back in adventures.
