Ku-Kai Izakaya – Hidden Izakaya in Admiralty!

Sharlyne Soh

Looking to enjoy the sunset by the waters while tucking into an icy cold beer and some bites? Ku-Kai Izakaya is the place to be! Despite being slightly inaccessible via public transport, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Ku-Kai Izakaya - sea view sunset

Most diners here opt for the al fresco dining option for the feels but indoor seating is always available for those who would rather be in the comfort of air-conditioning.

Ku-Kai Izakaya - gratin

They boast a wide variety of food items and after spending some time flipping through the menu, I decided to start my meal off with the Kani Tama Gratin ($13). This Japanese gratin was made with straight cut macaroni that was firm yet chewy, unlike your typical potato gratin.

The slight sweetness from the bits of snow crab and fish, and saltiness of the bacon bits made for a right balance that hit the spot. The Béchamel sauce and cheese also gave the gratin the creaminess it needed. The layer of aburi mentaiko added a hint of spice and fishiness.

Even with this being a side, the portion was on the smaller side. That said, it was just enough to whet my appetite without being too jelak.

Ku-Kai Izakaya - skewers

You can’t go to an Izakaya and not have skewers! The Kushiyaki Omakase 5 piece Skewer Set ($22) had the usual suspects – Chicken Thigh, Chicken Balls, Chicken Thigh with Leek, Pork Belly and Shiitake Mushroom. They also have a 7 piece set ($30).

I just have to put it out there that even as I’m writing this all I can think about is the perfectly grilled skewers.

The chicken was moist and tender, the pork belly extremely flavourful and the lightly salted mushroom still slightly juicy. Since they were grilled over a charcoal fire, there was a tinge of smoky flavour in the skewers that complemented the sauce slathered all over.

Ku-Kai Izakaya - okonomiyaki

Finally, I had their Seafood Okonomiyaki ($19) which seemed to be rather popular. You can opt for the Chicken ($16) or Pork ($18) option if you haven’t had enough of their meat dishes. Unfortunately, their rendition of this Japanese pancake missed the mark for me.

The Okonomiyaki was slightly too cakey for my liking and the exterior wasn’t as crispy as I would’ve hoped for it to be. The seafood ingredients were also slightly lacking in terms of quantity, with only little bits of Tako and Prawn scattered around. The only saving grace would be the mountain of Bonito Flakes that topped the cabbage pancake.

I would just go straight for the skewers and other bites they offer and skip their Okonomiyaki.

Ku-Kai Izakaya - outdoor seating inside

This hidden gem is perfect for any occasion – a post-work chill session, a family meal or even a romantic evening date. Due to their limited seating, I would recommend making a reservation before heading down!

La Pizzeria At The Bridge & Beacon Bar Review: Wood-Fired Pizzas With A Waterfront View

La pizzeria at the bridge & beacon bar.

La Pizzeria - Flatlay

While I rely heavily on things like bak chor mee and lukewarm delivery pizza as my main source of calories, my wannabe atas self can’t help but yearn for some fancy pasta and handmade, wood-fired pizzas every once in a while. So when I got a chance to check out the new La Pizzeria at The Bridge & Beacon Bar , I volunteered myself immediately. This new restaurant at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club offers Italian dishes that lean towards traditional recipes.

Food at La Pizzeria at The Bridge & Beacon Bar

La Pizzeria - Ravioli Spinach and Ricotta

The huge bowl of Ravioli Spinach and Ricotta ($25+) enticed us most, so we decided to start with that. A staff member cut open the bread cover, and peeled it back to reveal plump pieces of ravioli swimming in thick, fragrant truffle mushroom cream.

The flavours of the broth managed to soak thoroughly into the ravioli, and the filling of spinach and cheese melted nicely in my mouth as I bit into each piece.

La Pizzeria - Primavera

Our Primavera ($22+) arrived next. This handmade pizza was topped with a large handful of cheese and rocket lettuce, as well as epic proportions of prosciutto that covered nearly the whole pizza.  While I enjoyed the savoury pizza, it was a little too salty for my colleague.

La Pizzeria - Gnocchi Sorrentina

Gnocchi Sorrentina ($22+) left a pretty good impression on us. The potato dumplings were satisfyingly chewy, and after I coated them with tomato sauce and melted cheese, I couldn’t stop stuffing them into my mouth.

La Pizzeria - Sauteed Mussels

We finished our meal with Sauteed Mussels ($16+) , which were an absolute delight. The richly coloured morsels looked super appetising, and when I put them in my mouth, they exploded with a garlicky flavour. There was a very faint aroma of white wine too.

Ambience at La Pizzeria at Bridge and Beacon Bar

La Pizzeria - Ambience

La Pizzeria is found within the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club. Since it’s located on the edge of the waterfront club, it   offers a great view of the harbour and the sleek yachts lounging there. The sheltered outdoor deck is generally quite comfortable, with the sea breeze keeping you cool. If you visit on an especially sunny day, the restaurant has an air-conditioned interior too.

La Pizzeria - Waterfront at Singapore Yatch Club

The only downside is that the club is a little far from the rest of civilisation. Luckily, it does provide a number of shuttle buses throughout the day to and from Clementi and Haw Par Villa MRT Stations. The bus schedule can be found here .

The verdict

restaurant in singapore yacht club

Despite its general ulu- ness, La Pizzeria serves pretty legit Italian fare that warrants a visit. The relaxing ambience of the restaurant and the stellar presentation of the food also makes this a nice place for a cosy dinner for two in the evening. Most items are pricey, so I’d recommend visiting in groups of three to four and sharing a few dishes.

Yer landlubbers be knowin' by now that I'm a pirate. But a piratin' license be needed to sail ye straits o' Singapore. So to get back to sailin' the se'en seas, me was 'ere for a boatin' course. PPCDL (powered pleasure craft driving license), they call it. Bahh! 'tis marina be a pretty port, much more to me fancy than the previous one me ship was docked in at the port o' Punggol. Now pirates are usually a filthy lot, but not this corsair! Me was happy to see that it was clean and new-lookin', with a wonderful view of the sea. Arrrrrr! Lots of fancy ships be docked here too. Fancy quarters aplenty but ye need to be a member of their crew to stay arrrrr. The cook was also dishing out grub and rum for pieces o' eight. Gettin' here be a piece o' cake, it's at the West Coast and near to the main roads. Shiver me timbers! 'Tis a good choice for dockin' my pirate ship when it arrives. Yo ho ho!

Tucked away in the far recesses of West Coast Park near the port, the RSYC is a yacht club that's provided sea sport facilities and other amenities since 1826. I'm not a member: I came here to get on a boat. My friends organized a boat trip and our boat (not so much a yacht) was berthed here. It's a large, impressive facility. While I honestly can't compare it to other yacht clubs since my frame of reference on this matter is so narrow, I did like what I saw. They also have accommodation here in their Marina Lodge, which is available for members, their nominated guests and visiting yachtsmen only. There's also a large cafe with alfresco seating that serves up a buffet and beer.

New Filipino Restaurant Alert: hayop, fine-casual offshoot of Manila’s Manam Arrives in Singapore

Halo-Halo dessert, crispy pork sisig, and Lumpia spring rolls at hayop.

PUBLISHED September 11th, 2024 06:00 am

After years of shaping the culinary landscape in the Philippines , The Moment Group has finally graced us with hayop (translating to “beast” in Filipino slang) — the much-anticipated “fine-casual” offshoot of the beloved Manam brand.  Nestled in Amoy Street , hayop’s debut in our little red dot, marks its first venture beyond the Philippines. Not only does hayop bring a wave of nostalgia for the Filipino expat community here, but it is also a space where Singaporeans are introduced to modern glowed-up flavours of the Philippines in a way that’s never been done here before. Yet, it feels both authentic and refreshing.

Ambience & Interiors

hayop - Interiors

hayop’s interior is intimate, stylish, and without a doubt rooted in Pinoy culture. From the hanging lamps, to the wooden screens, and even the dish-ware in front of you, Filipino craftsmanship is woven into every corner of the dining space. Here you’ll find works of artists like Rita Nazareno, Mia Casal, and so many more celebrating the Filipino culture and arts, with thoughtfully selected designs, hinting at the land and sea elements present in hayop’s dishes.

The Menu & What They’ve Got In store For You

The menu is consistent with the restaurants story and ethos, blending traditional Filipino flavours with modern, sometimes unexpected, twists. Here’s a taste of what what we had:

Kinilaw and Lumpia: Kinilaw with raw Hamachi and Lumpia with mung bean crepes at hayop.

For ceviche lovers, their version of the Kinilaw (S$28++) comes with sashimi-grade Hamachi cured in spiced coconut vinegar, giving it a tangy, zingy burst of flavour with every bite. Even with the coconut vinegar cutting through the dish, we appreciated how we could still taste the clean and fresh fish towards the end of the bite. For the ultimate light snack, the Lumpia (S$14++for 2pcs) is hayop’s house-made spring rolls that are delicate yet packed with flavour, thanks to the roasted baby carrots and soy-braised jackfruit. The real MVP, though, is the sweet soy garlic lumpia sauce—umami at its finest.

Ensaladang Hayop and Manam’s House Crispy Sisig: Ensaladang Hayop salad and crispy pork sisig at hayop.

And, of course, there’s the sisig. Manam’s House Crispy Sisig (S$22++), made from pork jowl and cheek, is served sizzling, with fried garlic and red chili, and it’s exactly the kind of dish that’ll make you nostalgic if you’ve ever had a plate of this in Manila. Don’t skip the calamansi—it lifts the whole dish to a new level, balancing the rich, crispy pork with a citrusy freshness. Looking for something light and refreshing ? The Ensaladang Hayop (S$14++) is a delightful mix of winged beans, red radish, and pickled watermelon rind, tossed in a salted egg yolk vinaigrette. Topped with salted egg white crumble, each bite features that familiar hayop zing.

Manam’s Crispy Palabok and Inasal na Panga: Crispy Palabok noodles and grilled maguro jaw at hayop.

Another standout is the Manam’s Crispy Palabok (S$26++), a staple Filipino noodle dish, but hayop flips the script with crispy glass noodles that sizzle as the shrimp and annatto sauce is poured over. Topped with charred baby cuttlefish, tiger prawns, and crispy garlic, it’s a rich, comforting plate that’ll satisfy any craving for something savoury. Whilst the hearty Inasal na Panga (S$34++) is a flavour-packed dish with charcoal-grilled maguro jaw; It combines a perfectly charred exterior with tender meat. Pair it with their watermelon atsara for a crunchy, salty twist that’s sure to please both Filipino and Singaporean palates.

Halo-Halo and Buko Pie: Halo-Halo shaved ice dessert and Buko Pie with coconut filling at hayop.

Don’t forget dessert! The Halo-Halo (S$18++), a beloved Filipino dessert, is a must-try.A medley of ube, leche flan, jellies, and more, this dessert is like a Filipino ice kachang. It’s the kind of sweet, colourful mess you mix together, and each spoonful tastes better than the last. Pro tip: pour over the evaporated milk for that extra creamy goodness. And if you’ve still got space (or a second stomach for sweets), the Buko Pie ($14++) is another gem. Imagine an apple pie, but with young coconut filling. The buttery crumble on top and coconut whipped cream make this dessert cozy and familiar, despite its petite size.

hayop is located at 104 Amoy St, Singapore 069924, p. +65 8028 9012. Open Tue-Sat 5pm–10pm.

Skewered to perfection: The best yakitori spots in Singapore for Japanese grilled meats on a stick

Love yakitori? We know the best yakitori spots in Singapore for a grilling skew-mance.

Mention Japanese cuisine, and most people will immediately pick sushi or ramen as their faves. Some might go for yakiniku or shabu shabu . What about the humble yakitori? These versatile baddies are perfect as a bar snack, entree, or party cuisine. In fact, we can guarantee that stopping at just one is impossible. Hungry yet? You’ve come to the right place if you’re looking for yakitori restaurants in Singapore. Yes, we know the best Japanese joints where you can sink your teeth into charcoal-grilled skewers.

The best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

1. sa tae bak.

Sa Tae Bak | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

This eatery’s name holds a double name. It stands for “three pieces of meat” in Hokkien, and if you say the name fast enough, it sounds like “ satay “, another skewer fave here in Singapore. How clever! Sa Tae Bak goes all out with the theme, with Japanese-style posters on the walls and various yakitori options. The crispy and creamy enoki bacon miso is a must-try, with the unagi coming a close second. Oyster lovers can enjoy these molluscs fresh or grilled. Sa Tae Bak , multiple locations including Bali Lane and Changi Road

Torisei | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

While many Korean dining establishments call Tanjong Pagar home, there are some underrated gems we highly recommend visiting. One of them is this kappo-style restaurant, which serves up head-to-tail yakitori omakase menus for lunch and dinner. You can even customise your menu as long as you inform the folks in advance. Speaking of the menu, you won’t be able to find it online as it changes seasonally. But that’s the beauty of it – you’ll end up with a lovely surprise once you’ve warmed your seat. Torisei , #01-02/03, Frasers Tower, 182 Cecil Street, Singapore 069547

3. Nanbantei

Nanbantei | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

You may know Far East Plaza as Little Pinoy (or that Orchard Road mall filled with Filipino food). However, it’s also the home of what’s arguably one of Singapore’s pioneering yakitori restaurants. The a la carte menu boasts specialities like a meatball combining beef, chicken, and pork, shishamo (pregnant fish), and chicken buttocks (for those with adventurous palates). Nanbantei , multiple locations including Far East Plaza and Chinatown Point

4. Kai Yakitori

Kai Yakitori | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

Who’s been to Orchard Plaza? If you replied in the affirmative, you’re a real one. Singapore’s often-forgotten mall (it’s adjacent to Orchard Central if you need a reminder) is brimming with Japanese delights, including this elusive yakitori restaurant. Chook skewers are front and centre of Kai’s omakase menu. Foodies raved about the wing, which is crispy yet tender. Tip for the faint-hearted: close your eyes and quickly pop the hatsu (chicken heart) into your mouth. Kai Yakitori , #04-23/24 Orchard Plaza, 150 Orchard Road, Singapore 238841

5. Yorimichi Izakaya

Yorimichi Izakaya | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

Blink and you’ll probably miss this hidden bar . That’s expected since it occupies a small nook near the complex’s entrance. (Also, who goes to Golden Mile Tower for Japanese food?) Step inside and you’re immediately transported to the Land of the Rising Sun, thanks to Japanese posters and paraphernalia. Psst: check out the disco ball surrounded by cherry blossoms! Yorimichi’s claim to fame is its outstanding yakitori, which really hits the nail on the head. Everything is perfectly grilled and goes along well with a yuzu highball. Yorimichi Izakaya , #01-02, Golden Mile Tower, 6001 Beach Road, Singapore 199589

6. Yakitori Yatagarasu

Yakitori Yatagarasu | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

If you’re not too busy, take some time to walk down Circular Road . This bustling stretch houses hidden restaurants and cafes , happening bars, and a famous supper place. Gourmands will also know this area in Singapore has a strong Japanese presence, and this yakitori restaurant plays a part. Visitors often sing the praises of its chicken skewers, though the pork ones are nothing to scoff at. In short, order everything and enjoy the meaty goodness. Yakitori Yatagarasu , #01-01, 72 Circular Road, Singapore 049426

7. skewers yakitori izakaya.

Skewers Yakitori Izakaya | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

Most people typically associate yakitori with Japanese chefs. That’s not the case here. The grilling is handled by talented locals who nail that perfect smoky char and juicy tenderness, transforming each skewer into a mouthwatering masterpiece. The skewers menu goes beyond just chicken, offering an array of other grilled delights like beef, pork, seafood, and veggie options. 8. Shunjuu Izakaya

Shunjuu Izakaya | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

Izakayas are our go-to spots for good food and great vibes. At this Robertson Quay gem, the sumiyaki (charcoal grill) specialities are the real stars, stealing the show from everything else on the menu. Don’t miss out on standout offerings like the meat bar served with raw egg, oysters wrapped in pork, and perfectly crispy chicken wings. Wash everything down with top-notch sakes imported from all over Japan. Shunjuu Izakaya , #01-15, Riverside View, 30 Robertson Quay, Singapore 238251

9. The Burning Oak

The Burning Oak | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

Yakitori takes centre stage at this hipster hawker stall, which resides above Simpang Bedok , aka one of Singapore’s iconic supper spots . Chow down on quail egg, pork shoulder, chicken thigh, and shiitake mushroom skewers at affordable prices. Craving the premium stuff? We recommend getting the slow-cooked beef short rib or Iberico pork cheek. The only word we can use to describe them is “delicious”. The Burning Oak , multiple locations including Bedok Marketplace and Expo

10. JiBiru Yakitori & Craft Beer Bar

JiBiru Yakitori & Craft Beer Bar | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

As its name implies, JiBiru is a post-work heaven for those craving Japanese beers. Aside from the craft brews, this bar feeds the parched with grilled meats inspired by the Saitama region near Tokyo . Some snacks you won’t be able to resist are chicken meatballs and premium Hokkaido pork, all marinated and glazed in special sauces. Those feeling super peckish should go for the platters. JiBiru Craft Beer Bar , #01-26, 313@Somerset, 313 Orchard Road, Singapore 238895

11. Mikawa Yakitori Bar

Mikawa Yakitori Bar | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

This spot is probably the closest thing you’ll get to an izakaya in the Siglap neighbourhood. Mikawa takes pride in its yakitori offerings, which include chicken gizzard, heart with sauce, and soft bone. You can also enjoy other meaty (and vegetarian) delicacies on skewers, like pork belly with onion, scallops wrapped in bacon, codfish, and Japanese sweet potatoes. Mikawa Yakitori Bar , multiple locations in Siglap and Bukit Timah

12. Shirokane Tori-Tama

Shirokane Tori-Tama | Best yakitori restaurants in Singapore

A handful of Japanese eateries dot the Robertson Quay terrain, with many folks flocking here for a taste of the beloved country. This Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient is one yakitori restaurant in Singapore that skews towards those palates. Here’s where diners can get parts like neck, back, tail, and middle wing carved from smoky, barbecued chicken. The live grilling will take time, so sip on a Sapporo or Suntory as you patiently wait. Shirokane Tori-Tama , #01-02, Robertson Walk, 11 Unity Street, Singapore 237995

It’s yakitori time at these Japanese restaurants and food spots in Singapore!
