13 places to rent a boat in and around Seattle—for cheap

Get out on the water

There’s an old saying among boaty types: “A boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money.” But when Pacific Northwest weather is behaving, there’s no better place to be than out on the water, whether you’re in a kayak, a canoe, a sailboat, or even a paddleboard.

Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water while leaving boat maintenance to the experts, no matter what skill level you have in watercraft. Bonus: Most purveyors of boaty experiences also have classes for those who are a little nervous to get on the water.

Whether you’re looking to paddle out among the lily pads near the arboretum on Lake Washington, cruise past Gas Works Park by Lake Union , or get out on the the Puget Sound, here are 13 boat rental options from Sand Point to Seward Park —largely human-powered.

Map points are ordered north to south.

Sail Sand Point

North End folks can get out on Lake Washington with Sail Sand Point, which offers rentals for kayaking, paddleboarding, sailboating, and windsurfing—plus classes and camps in all of the above. Rentals start at $18 an hour , and some rentals require a skills test.

Ballard Kayak

Right next to Golden Gardens Park, Ballard Kayak rents not just kayaks, but paddleboads too, starting at $20 an hour, all summer long. Looking for a more structured experience? It offers tours , too—incuding one through the Ballard Locks.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ballard Kayak & Paddleboard (@ballardkayak) on Jul 25, 2017 at 9:24am PDT

Greenlake Boathouse

Located—appropriately—on Green Lake, this establishment rents kayaks, paddleboatds, water bikes, rowboats, and more starting at $24 an hour. If you get attached to that boat life, it sells used boats, too. Happy hour pricing brings all rentals down to $16 an hour when the rental starts before noon.

A post shared by Viet (@vietrice91) on May 26, 2018 at 5:30pm PDT

Woodmark Waterfront Adventures

Part of Kirkland’s Carillon Point resort, Waterfront Adventures will rent human-powered watercraft for pretty standard rates—starting at $19 an hour for a paddleboard or one-person kayak. It also rents out motorboats and jetskis, but the price range is much steeper (and probably falls out of the “cheap” category), at up to $189 an hour during peak season.

Agua Verde Café and Paddle Club

Tucked away in Portage Bay, Agua Verde is in a good position to paddleboard or kayak to Gas Works or the arboretum—and you can grab a taco or three at the cafe afterwards. Rentals start at $18 an hour.

A post shared by Agua Verde Paddle Club (@aguaverdepaddleclub) on Mar 3, 2018 at 10:14am PST

University of Washington Waterfront Activities Center (WAC)

On Union Bay near Husky Stadium, the WAC is the ideal jumping-off point for a paddle through the Washington Park Arboretum in a kayak, canoe, or rowboat. Rentals start at $8 an hour for UW students or $12 an hour for the general public.

A post shared by Seattle Times (@seattletimes) on Apr 3, 2018 at 4:48pm PDT

Northwest Outdoor Center

Located on Lake Union, Northwest Outdoor Center rents paddleboards for $20 an hour and kayaks starting at $18 an hour. If you get attached to the little boat life, boards and kayaks are available for purchase, too—and those that are inexperienced or need a refresher can register for classes . Those unsure where to start can sign up for a group outing .

A post shared by Northwest Outdoor Center (@nwoutdoorcenter) on Aug 22, 2017 at 5:49pm PDT

Hot Tub Boat Rentals Seattle

More into relaxing on the water than athletic pursuits? Hot Tub Boats are literally what they sound like: hot tubs that are boats. The rental is a little steep—$350 for the first two hours—but ideally you split it with five of your closest friends.

A post shared by Hot Tub Boats (@hottubboats) on Jan 15, 2018 at 11:56am PST

Located on sheltered Lake Union waters, Moss Bay rents out paddleboards, kayaks, and sailboats starting at $15 an hour for a kayak. Adventurers can rent kayaks to take away, too—or those starting out can take lessons.

A post shared by Marty Makes It Better (@dooditsmarty) on Sep 5, 2017 at 10:08am PDT

The Center for Wooden Boats

Center for Wooden Boats has facilities both on Lake Union and at Cama Beach, a state park with beachfront cabin rentals . Also a museum, it’s a great place to go to learn about the Northwest’s boating history—or just rent a sailboat, rowboat, canoe, or kayak from some serious experts. Rentals range from $35 for double kayaks to $65 for a large sailboat, and CWB offers classes , too.

A post shared by The Center for Wooden Boats (@centerforwoodenboats) on Mar 29, 2018 at 5:00pm PDT

Alki Kayak Tours

This rental service in West Seattle has a little bit of everything: kayaks and paddleboards starting at $20 an hour or $90 per day, or fishing boat rentals starting at $50 an hour if you want something gas-powered. If you need extra guidance, classes start at $79 , and tours are available , too.

It also rents skates, bikes, skateboards, and longboards for those looking for more of a beach boardwalk experience.

A post shared by Alki Kayak Tours (@alkikayaktours) on Jul 14, 2014 at 5:07pm PDT

Enatai Beach Park

Cascade Paddlesports has a boathouse at this Bellevue beach park, and rents kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards. Rates range from $18 for the first hour of a single, sit-on-top kayak rental ($9 for additional hours) to $30 for a double sea kayak rental ($15 for additional hours).

A post shared by Stephon Johnson (@stephongj) on Jul 15, 2018 at 3:53pm PDT

Northwest Paddle Surfers

With locations in Seattle, Kirkland, and Lacey, Northwest Paddle Surfers’s main thing is paddleboards ($25 an hour at the Seattle location by Adams Boat Ramp), but kayaks are available, too ($25 an hour for a single kayak at the Juanita Beach location). Want to step it up? Northwest Paddle Surfers also hosts paddleboard yoga classes throughout the week in Kirkland.

We had a fabulous time using Marina del Rey boat rentals! The driver was named Josh and he was just fantastic! The sites we saw were breathtaking. Just one whiff of that Ocean air started my day off on the right foot. I will never forget my memories on the Seafari.

kayak sailboat rental

Super fun and easy way to feel like a boat owner without all the obligation and expenses. I rented a small Boston whaler to venture around the harbor, and I found the equipment to be in perfect shape, very clean, easy to operate, and reasonably priced.

We had my daughter's birthday party on the Seafari boat and everything was great! The staff was great and very friendly! We booked the boat for 3 hours and the captain made sure we were able to stop for a restroom break. The pricing was very reasonable. We will definitely be coming back!

If you're looking for a professional to take you sailing but you don't want it to feel like a tour boat, take a ride on Nick's personal boat. Bring along something cold to drink and enjoy the peace and quiet of being out on the water. My only regret is I should have made it a full day

Nick was a very experienced and knowledgeable skipper who truly welcomed us aboard. This is a beautiful sailing vessel that provides a fun, safe and comfortable ride for everyone aboard. We had a super trip with Nick and would love to book a whole day with him next time we are in town.

Jason

It was absolutely perfect! I would highly recommend anyone to book him!!! He’s amazing AND professional with explaining the location and the directions we were heading while keeping us on time with the planned schedule. Couldn’t have ask for a better Captain. Once more, THANK YOU!

We cannot forget the micro-skiff that has ruled the flats for over 40 years now. We are talking about Gheenoe ! Made in Titusville, Florida, they rule the flats with an alternative to both the standard canoe, and the flats skiff. We stock the two Highsider (13' and 15') models regularly, with the ability to special order any bigger model you may want (such as the 15'6 Classic, 16' Super, and Low Tide 25), customized exactly to your specifications. KAYAKS, CANOES, AND PADDLEBOARDS

Couple people standing in their kayaks fishing a grass flats while it storms in the background

We offer a variety of ways for you to get on the water. Whether you want a kayak you can paddle, pedal, or drop a motor on, we offer a variety of options. We have options for if you'll be fishing all the time, or want something lightweight that 's easy to unload and get to the water.

We also maintain one of the largest canoe inventories in the state, offering a range of hull shapes and materials, from durable thermo-molded canoes to lightweight kevlar and carbon fiber hulls.

We stock the wide-ranging Tahe SUP line of paddleboards, with everything from hard boards to inflatables, to boards that can double as a kayak.

SKIFFS, MOTORS, AND TRAILERS

Pair of Gheenoe LoTide 15s in front of store

Want something a bit more substantial on the water? That 's where the Gheenoe and Custom Gheenoe comes in! This micro-skiff comes in a range of sizes, from the 13' Hi-sider that cruises comfortably with a 5hp motor, to the 16' Super, which can take up to a 40hp.

We stock both electric trolling motors and Yamaha gas outboard motors for outfitting your Gheenoe with. Some of the electric motors can also work great on your kayak or flat-back canoe, with the proper attachments.

Gheenoes transport easiest on a trailer in many instances. Or maybe you want a trailer for your kayak and other gear, leaving your rooftop clear? We offer a selection of trailers for these needs.

ACCESSORIES

Parial view of accessory side of the showroom. Fishing rods, kayak paddles, carts, and dry storage.

Finding the right boat is only part of the equation. Finding the right paddle, safety gear (like a personal flotation device, dry box, and bilge pump), and storage solutions, is another part. We maintain a selection in all these categories, aiming to provide you with the best options to help you stay comfortable every time you get on the water.

The last part is transportation. We offer kayaks carts for easily getting your kayak to and from the water. And we carry Roof Carrier solutions from both Yakima and Thule.

Have an idea of how you want you kayak built out, but not sure how? We offer custom outfitting and repairs.

YAMAHA POWER ASSIST BICYCLES

Person riding white electric bike on road beside a park.

Looking for something to do off the water? We carry a range of Yamaha Power Assist Bicycles. Yamaha introduced the first bike to market, and have since been unceasingly innovating to provide ease-to-use, reliable platforms for a variety of environments.

There are the CrossCore and CrossConnect for those in want of a downtown and recreational cruiser. The Civante for road biking enthusiasts. The Wabash for someone who rides on both road and gravel trails. And the YDX-TORC and YDX-MORO lines for those exploring all sorts of mountain trials.

If you are curious about what these can offer, stop by the shop and check them out in person.

Sometimes you have a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard that you are almost sure is the one, but you have to try it on the water first, that's understandable. You want to make sure you pick the right boat the first time.

Panorama of the MAC

Marina Aquatic Center

The MAC is home to a multitude of inclusive boating and safety programs, equipment rentals, youth programs, and competitive teams at both the collegiate and youth levels.

About the mac.

Our History:

The UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, formerly referred to as the “UCLA Boating and Safety Education Program,” was created in 1977 through a grant from the California Department of Navigation and Ocean Development for the purpose of providing boating safety and education at UCLA and in the Southern California area. For the first fourteen years of operation, the Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) operated instructional sailing and windsurfing programs as part of the University’s Department of Cultural and Recreational Activities (CRA). In 1991 the Department took over operation of the adjacent crew boathouse and subsequently added recreational rowing, kayaking, and surfing to its roster of activities. As part of a department wide expansion, the Center began offering youth boating in 1994, effectively exposing a new and important segment of the Southern California community to the concepts of water and boating safety. Due to the rapid rise in popularity of stand up paddling, and the Coast Guard's decision to regard SUP boards as vessels, the Marina Aquatic Center made the decision to add a Stand Up Paddling clinic to its schedule in 2011.

Today the Marina Aquatic Center is a vibrant waterfront recreation facility offering equipment rentals and a multitude of inclusive boating and safety programs in sailing, rowing, windsurfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and surfing. The MAC also houses the UCLA Men's and Women's Rowing Teams, UCLA Sailing Team, MAC Junior Rowing Team, and youth boating programs.

View the 2020 MAC Facility Tour made for UCLA student Welcome Week.

Mission Statement:

To complement the comprehensive services of the UCLA Department of Cultural and Recreational Affairs by offering the opportunity to experience high-quality boating programs in a waterfront environment to the UCLA community and the general public.

  • Boating and Water Safety
  • Recreational Boating Education with an Emphasis on Beginning Level Instruction
  • Strong Fundamental and Practical Applications in Boat Handling
  • Promotion of Health and Well-being
  • Widespread Access to Programs
  • Customer Service and Professionalism
  • Environmental Stewardship

DBW Partnership:

The Marina Aquatic Center partners with the California Division of Boating and Waterways who funds boating facilities, boating safety education and supports boating law enforcement in California. A portion of the equipment at the center is provided by the state parks division to enhance boating safety education in California.

Facility Policies

GETTING TO THE FACILITY AND PARKING

  • Parking at the MAC is limited and available on a first come first serve basis.  Facility users are encouraged to ride their bike or carpool. Do not park on any yellow striped area; doing so will force other vehicles to drive on the bike path to get around you.  Do not park in the Breakwater parking lot or garage - you will be towed.  Overflow parking is available at Dock 52 and Fisherman’s Village.
  • Drive slowly and carefully to and from the MAC parking lot.  Watch for pedestrians and cyclists on the bike path and the Breakwater access road.  Once you reach the Marina Aquatic Center facility, drive on the striped access lane only. DO NOT drive on the LA County bike path.   When exiting parking spaces, watch for bike path traffic; stay on the striped driving lane and back into the turnaround area provided. All users should exit the MAC parking area the same way they entered – keeping left into the apartments and staying off of the bike path.

PERSONAL ITEMS:

  • Participants should bring only what is minimally required to their rental and should arrive ready to get on the water.
  • Waterproof watch
  • Filled water bottle (no refills available at facility)
  • Clothing :  All participants will get wet from sitting in kayaks/equipment. Come wearing clothes that you are ok with getting wet and do not bring much more than what you need.
  • Sun Protection
  • Cell phone, keys, and ID can be placed in small cell phone lockers during a rental or course.
  • Lockers are available for use during rental or class participation, but locks are not provided. Please bring your own lock. Any additional personal items must be stored in your vehicle. Please leave all valuables at home. The MAC is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

RESTROOMS AND LOCKER ROOMS

  • Restrooms are open only to MAC participants, including access to lockers, open changing space, and showers.
  • Locks and towels are not provided.

GENERAL SAFETY:

  • All participants must be water safe and comfortable swimming a minimum of 100 yards and tread water for a minimum of five minutes.
  • Sailors, kayakers, stand up paddle boarders (SUP), and windsurfers are required to wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) while on the dock and water, at all times. Rowers are exempt.
  • To protect your feet, always wear shoes at the MAC.  Shoes should have sufficient tread and heal Support to prevent you from slipping on the wet surfaces around the dock.  Bare feet are only allowed on the dock as you are launching or docking rowing shells, stand up paddleboards, windsurfers, kayaks, or laser sailboats.  Shoes should be replaced first thing after docking.
  • When launching and docking, minimize the time you spend on the dock and the space that you take up to help reduce dock congestion.
  • Participants must be able to “self-rescue.” If you are unable to self-rescue due to an injury or equipment breakage, stay with the vessel. Do not try to swim to shore.  Hail the Dockmaster or other boaters for assistance.
  • Participants must be able to steer a safe course through the marina, keeping watch for obstacles.
  • During a rental, it not permitted to beach equipment, dock at another location, or to leave the vessel unattended at any time.
  • When two vessels collide for any reason, whether they sustain damage or not.
  • A MAC vessel hits or becomes stuck in rocks, mud, or any other stationary object.
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Dogs off of their leash
  • Launching of personal equipment
  • Running, roughhousing, and/or riding bikes or scooters anywhere around the facility.
  • Talking loudly or making excessive noise that may disturb our neighbors, before 8am and after 9pm
  • Sitting in or riding on the rolling equipment

EQUIPMENT CARE

  • Renters will be responsible financially for equipment that is damaged beyond normal wear and tear. If the damage is excessive, they may be responsible for full repair/replacement costs ($90/hr on repair labor). Check the equipment for any damage before launching from the dock and report any issues with the equipment.
  • Complete a safety check of your vessel – make sure everything works and is properly adjusted before entering the water.
  • Secure accessories and equipment before launching.
  • Never drag the equipment on the ground.
  • When you return to the dock, bring your equipment back into the allocated staging area. Thoroughly rinse your vessel with fresh water.
  • Return lifejackets to designated area to be sanitized by a staff member.
  • Do not use any tools or other Supplies owned by the Marina Aquatic Center.  Do not attempt to fix or customize any equipment while in your use.  See your instructor or the Dockmaster on duty if you need help with equipment.

MARINA DEL REY TRAFFIC PATTERN

  • It is the general responsibility of all vessels to avoid collision. Care should be taken to give these vessels the space and opportunity to maneuver.
  • Follow all standard COLREGs for navigation.
  • Yield to incoming traffic as you leave the dock and maneuver through the inbound power channel.
  • Launch and dock with traffic flow.
  • The traffic in the Marina follows a counter clockwise pattern around buoys in the Main Channel and counter clockwise around center line of the Entrance Channel.
  • Do not stop your vessel in an area where you will impede others.  Yield to faster vessels.
  • Do not block traffic.  If you must stop to receive instruction, or adjust equipment, position your vessel out of the main traffic flow.

CERTIFICATION/RENTAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND MAINTENANCE

  • Certifications and rental eligibility gained through UCLA Marina Aquatic Center courses do not expire, however, all students are expected to maintain the boating and safety knowledge equivalent to or higher than the minimum proficiency required for course completion. We encourage the continued practice and maintenance of skills through equipment rentals, events, and continued courses.
  • If more than 12 months have passed without documented sport-activity or if at any point UCLA Marina Aquatic Center staff have safety-related concerns about the ability of a participant, the dockmaster may restrict rental access and/or modify certifications. Participants may be required to retake a course or to complete a private lesson to regain their certification and rental eligibility.

WIND AND WEATHER

  • Participants may only rent within the wind parameters and designated areas as outlined in the table below. MAC staff reserve the right to determine when rentals and water activities are safe. Decisions will be based on the weather guidelines presented below, but staff may still choose to restrict activity even if the listed thresholds have not been reached.

Good Service, Great Rates
