Superyacht 'Koru' Oceanco

A Century of Sea Change

Yachts have seen remarkable transformations in design and technology in the last 100 years. The lengths and shapes have changed decade by decade, from the mini-ocean liners of the 1920s to a more glamorous, fuller shape by the 1950s, eventually giving way to the layered wedding-cake construction that was so popular until about a decade ago. Now, just about anything goes, judging from the list below, with yachts boasting vertical bows being the most popular.

Technology also changed over the years, from steam engines to diesel to a growing list of hybrid diesel-electric powerplants. In the next five years, expect to see the first generation of superyachts with hydrogen- or methanol-powered fuel cells. What really hasn’t changed in the last century are owners’ desires to create superyachts that are unique, often clashing with the accepted design norms of the time.

Here are the 25 greatest superyachts from the last 100 years.

'Delphine' (257 Feet 9 Inches) 1923, U.S.A.

Delphine is the original 1920s oceangoing queen. American automobile magnate Horace Dodge commissioned the vessel, rumored to have once hosted former President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, and Michigan shipbuilding company Great Lakes Engineering Works built it in 1921. At 258 feet, Delphine remains the largest yacht ever built in the U.S. that is still in operation. She is also the largest active steam-driven yacht in existence. The two original 1,500 hp steam engines were re-equipped with two modern water-tube boilers during a 2003 refit, which provide 18 metric tons of steam per hour. Surviving a stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II, several fires, and multiple owners, Delphine is today fully restored to her 1920s glory, including original teak on the main deck and a revived Tiffany-designed interior.

'Talitha' (247 Feet) 1929, Germany

Talitha is one of the world’s first superyachts with an exceptional pedigree. F. Krupp built the vessel, which was originally penned by naval architects Cox & Stevens (leading designers of their day), in Kiel, Germany. First known as Reveler , Talitha was delivered in 1929 to Russell Algar, chairman of the Packard Car Company. A string of high-profile owners ensued, including John Paul Getty Jr. in the 1930s, son of one of the richest men in the world at the time. Getty commissioned an exterior and interior redesign by late superyacht designer Jon Bannenberg and, in 1993, a full reconstruction was completed at the Devonport shipyard in Plymouth, U.K. Regular refits since, including a 1999 newly installed wheelhouse, has made Talitha successful as a popular charter yacht.

' Malahne' (164 feet) 1937/2015, UK

Originally designed and built for the owner of renowned J-Class yacht Velsheda , classic motor yacht  Malahne enjoys a period interior designed by Scottish designer Guy Oliver (best known for styling London’s 10 Downing Street and Claridge’s). Original Art Deco features include Baccarat crystal, Willer porcelain, Georg Jensen silverware, and a lamp by 1930s designer Edgar Brandt. The yacht was once used as the production headquarters for Lawrence of Arabia and had luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra walking the teak decks. In 2015, it underwent an extensive restoration at British shipyard Pendennis, which focused on maintaining its old-world glamour, including the yacht’s 25-foot custom-built Cockwells varnished Brazilian mahogany high-speed tender.

'Savarona' (446 Feet 9 Inches) 1931, Germany

Launched in 1931, Savarona was built for an heiress, enjoyed by royalty, and starred on the big screen. Built by Blohm & Voss for Emily Roebling Cadwalader, granddaughter of Brooklyn Bridge engineer John Roebling, 446-foot Savarona was featured in the German science-fiction film Gold . The Turkish government bought the vessel in 1938 and leased to Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadıkoğlu in 1989, who spent $45 million refurbishing the yacht. The original steam turbine engines were replaced with modern Caterpillar diesels, but the original 282-foot gold-trimmed staircase remains. Today, Savarona is the official presidential yacht of the Republic of Turkey.

'Shemara' (212 Feet, 2 Inches) 1938, Great Britain

Shemara

Within a year of being built in 1938, 212-foot Shemara was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and used throughout World War II as a training vessel for anti-submarine warfare. Following the end of its service, the superyacht returned to her owner Bernard Docker, who entertained high society aboard its decks. Later in life, Shemara endured long periods of neglect until current owner Charles Dunstone acquired her in 2010, starting the long road back to refurbishment. Alongside much of the original teak and steel exterior features, Shemara is now fitted with a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric system, including two electrically driven azimuthing pods and a bow thruster.

'Christina O' (325 Feet) 1943/1954

Possibly one of the most eminent superyachts of all time, 325-foot Christina O didn’t begin life in the spotlight. Built in 1943 by Canadian Vickers, the vessel served as a frigate in World War II until 1954 when Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis bought it as war surplus for a mere $34,000. He spent $4 million on the refurbishment and then entertained the world’s elite on board, from Maria Callas and Grace Kelly to Jack and Jackie Kennedy, prior to Onassis marrying Jackie. Named after Aristotle’s daughter, Christina O enjoys a bronze-edged swimming pool with a mosaic dance floor that rises at the push of a button. The stools in Ari’s Bar retain the original leather upholstery.

'V2V' (ex-Carinthia VI) (137 feet, 7 inches) 1973, Germany

The first major yacht designed by Jon Bannenberg and a breakthrough build for German shipyard Lürssen, Carinthia VI is a star of the decades, commissioned by supermarket magnate Helmut Horten as the sixth yacht in his Carinthia fleet. However, Carinthia V was in fact the original version but sadly hit an uncharted rock on her maiden cruise in the Mediterranean and sank. Horten ordered an almost identical replacement (this time with extra watertight bulkheads) and used Carinthia VI until his death in 1987. In 2016, the yacht suffered severe damage in a fire. Its new owner then bought the yacht, undergoing an extensive rebuild in Turkey to its original Bannenberg lines that was completed in 2023 when the yacht was renamed V2V.

'La Sultana' (214 Feet 56 Inches) 1962, Bulgaria

La Sultana

A Bulgarian passenger ferry turned Soviet spy vessel, 214.5-foot La Sultana has a checkered past. Built in 1962 for operations in the Black Sea, it was absorbed into the Russian fleet during the Cold War and sent to the North Atlantic for unofficial reconnaissance on the United States and United Kingdom. In 2015, La Sultana  completed a seven-year refit, which saw the addition of a raised bow, seven guest cabins across six decks, and a diesel engine installed to drive the original propeller. Several spying instruments were also discovered, including a radioactivity detector and thick aluminum insulation across the entire boat. The original push button steering controls are still in operation.

'Highlander' (164 Feet) 1986, Netherlands

American media mogul Malcolm Forbes commissioned the 164-foot Highlander , built by Feadship to a Jon Bannenberg design with De Voogt naval architecture, in 1986. The yacht’s historic guest list reads like a who’s who of Hollywood stars, from Elizabeth Taylor to Robert De Niro. Two bathrooms in the master suite are offset by six guest cabins. Those lucky enough to charter this piece of yachting history also have use of Forbes’s original cigarette boat, now re-painted in jet black with a bold red stripe.

'Tatoosh' (303 feet) 2000, Germany

Built by Nobiskrug for cellular pioneer Craig McCaw, the 303-foot Tatoosh was more famously owned by the late Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen, who bought the yacht off McCaw in 2001. Penned by German designer Claus Kusch—with input over the years from Jon Bannenberg, Terence Disdale, Martin Francis, and Stefano Pastrovich— Tatoosh is arguably one of the foremost explorer yachts of the modern age. The vessel was conceived to be a world cruiser with all the toys and entertainment that a yacht could carry. Alongside two helicopter landing pads, it has 11 staterooms for 19 guests, a heated swimming pool with a lifting floor, a cinema, and a dive center with a nitrox refilling station for deeper dives.

'Al Salamah' (456 Feet 10 Inches) 1999, Germany

At the time of its construction in 1999, 456-foot Al Salamah was the third largest yacht in the world. The build began at German yard HDW in Kiel but was completed by Lürssen in Bremen, the only yacht builder at the time capable of meeting the owner’s demanding timeline. Al Salamah was commissioned by the late Saudi Arabian crown prince Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz. Estimated to be worth in the region of $200 million and accommodating 36 guests, the ample amenities include a cinema, a fully equipped onboard hospital, two full-time beauticians, a business center, and a spa.

'H' (ex-NEOM) (311 feet) 2000, Netherlands

Delivered in 2000, the 311-foot  H   remained the largest Oceanco yet built and the largest yacht built in Holland until the delivery of Kaos (ex- Jubilee ) in 2017. Originally named Al Mirqab , the vessel was a highly private yacht under the ownership of the Qatar royal family before ex-politician and co-owner of Formula One Force India team Vijay Vittal Mallya took ownership in 2006. The Maltese government seized the lavishly outfitted yacht, which includes a helipad large enough for a twin-engine helicopter, Elton John’s baby grand piano, a full medical suite, and triple engines each delivering 10,000 hp, in 2017 over unpaid maritime bills. NEOM was auctioned off to her current owner in 2018.

'Rising Sun' (453 Feet) 2004, Germany

Built for Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison in 2004 and currently owned by business mogul David Geffen, Lürssen’s Rising Sun is another Jon Bannenberg success story, completed two years after the designer’s death. Even with her 453-foot length and 7,841-gross tonnes volume, Rising Sun achieves an impressive top speed of 28 knots. The owners were impressed enough with the speed to build a suspended, tube-like walkway so visitors can see the four MTU 20V 8000 M90 diesel engines providing the power. A bank of full-height curved windows run along the entire length of the superstructure, flooding the interior with natural light and giving the yacht a striking exterior profile.

'Motor Yacht A' (390 feet, 4 inches) 2008, Germany

Few yachts divide opinion like M/Y A . Designed by Philippe Starck, engineered by naval architect Martin Francis, and built by Blohm + Voss, the yacht is rumored to have cost in the region of $300 million to bring to life. Characterized by its head-turning reverse bow and vertical superstructure, the vessel is a private floating fortress where guests’ access to the water is restricted to the stern. It boasts a cathedral-like tender garage and three swimming pools; it’s also the predecessor to the even more controversial S/Y A , which emerged nine years later and briefly held the place of world’s largest sailing yacht before being displaced by Koru.

'Dubai' (531 Feet 5 Inches) 2006, Germany

Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei first commissioned Dubai in 1995 to be built in collaboration by German shipyards Blohm + Voss and Lürssen. But the superyacht was not completed until 2001 by Platinum Yachts when current owner, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, took over the project. British studio Winch Design crafted the exterior, and the vessel is reported to have cost in the region of $400 million to build. Dubai  was the largest yacht in the world until 2010, when she was replaced by Roman Abramovich’s 533-foot Eclipse . Dubai ’s amenities, spread across eight decks, include a helipad, two 33-foot chase boats, a squash court, and 20 Jet Skis.

'Savannah' (273 feet, 11 inches) 2015, Netherlands

Savannah is renowned for being the first hybrid yacht on water, with fuel savings of up to 30 percent. It blends a single diesel engine with three gensets, batteries, a propeller, and an azimuting pioneering electro-mechanical propulsion platform. Built by Feadship, the yacht’s 41-foot beam was such a tight fit for the Dutch canals during delivery that the builder wrapped her in protective film and used plywood on the sides to serve as fenders. With its interior and exterior designed by Cristina Gherardi Benardeau, the yacht was also ahead of its time, with a corridor of double-height video walls, a floating superstructure, and an underwater Nemo lounge.

'Maltese Falcon' (289 Feet) 2006, Turkey

The legendary Maltese Falcon broke the mold of yacht design when launched in 2006. Perini Navi’s 289-foot, three-masted schooner was the result of its adventurous owner, the late Tom Perkins, and naval architect Gerard Dykstra’s radical design idea. The show-stopping Dynarig concept, now coined the Falcon Rig, catapulted Maltese Falcon to becoming the world’s most instantly recognized yacht, not to mention one of the most complex and largest sailing vessels ever built. The contemporary, computer-controlled sail system is based on freestanding carbon masts and yard-arms into which the sails furl. This system allows for easy sailing in all sea conditions. Famous charterers include Tom Hanks, Hugh Jackman, and Google cofounder Larry Page.

'Eclipse' (533 Feet) 2009, Germany

Aside from stealing the title of world’s largest yacht from 531-foot Dubai by a mere 1.5 feet, Eclipse is an exercise in amenities. Delivered to her owner Roman Abramovich in 2009, the vessel features a 52-foot swimming pool within an extensive beach club, two helipads, and a helicopter hangar under the foredeck. The 533-foot yacht is powered by a diesel-electric system driving azimuthing pods, one of the first of its kind. Eclipse retained the title of world’s largest yacht until the arrival of 590.5-foot Azzam in 2013. Designed inside and out by Terence Disdale, Eclipse took five years to build and is reported to have cost in the region of $590 million.

'Chopi Chopi' (262 Feet) 2013, Italy

Tasked with an experienced owner’s brief for a private yacht on which to spend long family holidays, CRN delivered with  Chopi Chopi . The largest yacht built by CRN at the time of her 2013 launch, the 262-foot Chopi Chopi remains the Italian yard’s flagship. A 656-square-foot owner’s suite with private terrace is complemented by a helipad capable of landing a three-ton helicopter. The interior ceiling heights are in excess of seven feet. But the focus of the design is on comfortable outdoor living, realized by a large beach club with an adjoining sauna, hammam, and spa with a treatment room.

'Azzam' (590 Feet) 2013, Germany

At a whopping 590-foot, Azzam has held the title of world’s largest yacht since her launch in 2013. Azzam was built by German yard Lürssen in a record three years for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the current President of the United Arab Emirates. Alongside a 95-foot main saloon, Azzam carries a submarine and its own missile defense system. Two gas turbines and two diesel engines propel the yacht through the water more than 32 knots.

'Black Pearl' (350 Feet) 2018, Netherlands

Delivered by Oceanco in 2018, the 350-foot Black Pearl is only the second yacht in the world to be fitted with Dykstra’s DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system. Its eye-catching black sails span 9,514 square feet and can be set in a record seven minutes with the push of a button. The hybrid propulsion system combines wind power with two electric propulsion motors, and its controllable pitch propellers generate enough energy to support the yacht’s hotel load. A waste heat-recovery system is just one of the onboard features that helps to realize the owner’s vision of a “zero-impact” yacht.

'Excellence' (262 Feet) 2019, Germany

Built for an experienced serial owner, American automobile magnate Herb Chambers, the Winch-designed 262-foot Excellence was delivered in 2019. The vessel takes its design inspiration from Motor Yacht A , which Chambers at first didn’t care for but then began to love. The piercing reverse bow (that mimics the beak of an American eagle) and triple-height glass-fronted atrium give it curb appeal but has also led to the yacht being likened to a spaceship. Driven by the desire to have a connection to the outdoors, the design rests upon a symbiotic relation between the indoors and out and was ultimately successful, partially due to the use hundreds of square feet of curved, mirrored glass panels.

'Koru' (417 feet) 2023, Netherlands

Oceanco’s 417-foot Koru , commissioned by Jeff Bezos, is a three-masted, black-hulled schooner with a bowsprit, classic lines, and white superstructure. Reportedly costing $450 million to build and accompanied by a 246-foot custom Damen support yacht  Wingman , the new vessel is the world’s largest sailing yacht (knocking S/Y A off the top spot). Koru also holds the title of the largest superyacht ever built in the Netherlands and the tallest sailing yacht in the world, with masts that measure over 230 feet.

'Obsidian' (417 feet) 2023, Netherlands

Feadship’s 2023 delivery Obsidian has the appearance of a spaceship. But the boat’s technically advanced propulsion package, described as having a 90 percent reduction in total CO2 emissions, is what places it on this list, carrying the Dutch builder one step closer to its goal of achieving a zero-emission superyacht by 2030. The hybrid diesel-electric system is designed into a single-floor engine room creating additional interior space for owners, guests, and crew. With no drive shafts or rudders, the steering is done through a pair of electric Veth contrarotating thrusters. The diesel generators will also run on HVO, a second-generation biodiesel that manufacturers describe as a net-zero CO2 fuel. A low profile, horizontal styling features, and clean exterior shapes are a preamble for the yacht’s interior, which includes an underwater observation area—known as the Aqua Lounge.

'Luminance' (417 feet) 2023, Germany

Delivered in late 2023, Lürssen’s eighth largest build, Luminance , ranks as the 12th largest yacht in the world and is the 30th yacht built by the German shipyard with an exterior design by Espen Øino. The six-deck behemoth is one of the most significant yachts to be launched this year, with an internal volume of 9,000 GT, a beam of 66 feet, and an interior by Francois Zuretti. The gigayacht features two helipads, two Jacuzzis, a large swimming pool, and a distinctive stretched bow.

Multimillion-dollar mega yachts: Our ranking methodology

A superyacht or mega yacht is typically a motor yacht or sailing yacht with a length of 30 meters (100 feet) or more. For this ranking, we looked at the superyachts and luxury expedition mega yachts that are used privately or made available for charter. We excluded so-called ‘residential superyachts’ (think Njord and The World), which are essentially luxury apartment buildings at sea where people own private residences inside the superyacht rather than the whole yacht. By researching diverse, reliable sources like Wikipedia and the Superyacht Times, we compile a list of the largest yachts in the world.

Ever wonder where Jeff Bezos spends his downtime? As of today, we’re predicting it to be on his $500 million superyacht. Y721—nicknamed Koru—is 127m long. And featuring three sky-high slender masts, Koru is said to be the largest sailing yacht in the world . 

With dark exteriors and natural wooden decks, Koru is inspired by another one of Bezos’ yachts—the Black Pearl. The clean lines and classically curved bow speak to an understated elegance despite the yacht’s mammoth size. While a long line of portals indicates at least 9 guest cabins. In light of all the secrecy surrounding Koru, we doubt Bezos will ever charter her out, but we can still dream.

25. Al Mirqab | 436 feet—133m

Adorned with cascading chandeliers and gold accents, Al Mirqab is renowned for its unrivaled interiors. Surrounded by suspended glass artworks, a grand staircase floats throughout the four floors. And inspired by authentic Arabian styles, the magnificent superyacht is reminiscent of a magic carpet ride through the seas . 

Built for the former Prime Minister of Qatar, Peterswerft-Kusch spared no expense in delivering Al Mirqab to an impossibly high standard for luxury. The large swimming pool is a standout feature as it opens up into the sea, creating the ultimate playground for adults. Al Mirqab has a capacity for up to 60 guests and is manned by an equal number of crew. Although you have to be invited by the politician himself as Al Mirqab isn’t available for private charter.

She was renamed back to El Mahrousa in 2000 and gained even more recognition for being the first ship to cross the new Suez Canal extension in 2015. Back in her original days, she was built on the River Thames and took her first trip in 1867.

When it comes to the interior, details are sparse, but we do know that it was designed by Terence Disdale, a London firm renowned for creating bespoke luxury spaces.

Currently, she’s flying the flag of Oman and has spent a lot of time in its surrounding waters. Her interior was styled by British designer design house RWD, with exterior design being credited to Espen Oeino. When she was delivered to the Sultan of Oman, she replaced a previous ship of a smaller size.

The most expensive yacht in the world

The fact that the History Supreme, the world’s most expensive superyacht, comes coated in gold, is only part of the reason for its high cost. A superyacht with a real-life Midas touch, it was sold to an anonymous Malaysian businessman for $4.8 billion. 

Robert Kuok, the richest Malaysian businessman, is the rumored owner of History Supreme, but no one has confirmed for sure. The History Supreme also comes with plenty of other impressive touches: a master bedroom decked out in platinum, a wall feature made from meteoric stone, and a genuine T-Rex dinosaur bone, to add to the list. 

She took three years to build from scratch and comes with 10,000 kilograms of solid gold and platinum. Other seriously luxe features are her 68 kilograms 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium and a liquor bottle adorned with a rare 18.5-carat diamond . The base of the vessel comes wrapped in gold, too.

On a Tuesday morning in September, a six-foot-long plastic model of a boat sat on the second floor of the Explorers Club, looking a little like a beached Orca, sleek and out of place in the tweedy boardroom. The tiny yacht had traveled to East 70th Street from Los Angeles and, before that, made stops in Monaco and Zurich, Cannes, and West Palm Beach — a prop to entice buyers who can spend $10 million on a cabin in the world’s biggest yacht. If it gets made. The boat will be called the Ulyssia and it’s the passion project of Frank Binder, a billionaire from the Merck clan with a thing for boats (he once owned a shipyard in Monaco). Lenny Kravitz, his friend, is onboard to help design interiors. (“He’s a genius.”)

Binder has been doing a world tour to find other buyers — who might be hard to meet. Maintenance hovers around 3 percent a year, or $300,000 for that $10 million one-bedroom. It’s a big ask, especially for a boat that, if he does get recruits, won’t launch until 2028. To help, Binder brought on two former executives from the World , the luxury liner that was the first — and only — to prove rich people want to live … at sea, all year. (It launched in 2002, is still sold out, and has yet to snag on an iceberg or go bankrupt.)

Renato Chizzola , a senior vice-president for the Ulyssia who worked as the general manager of the World for five years, spoke to Curbed about the terrors of elephant seals and why he once hired Israeli snipers to come onboard.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. 

What did your job on the World look like?? 

I was in charge of lifestyle, expedition, everything — even the kitchen. You have a captain who’s the master of the vessel, and he ultimately will have the last word on safety, security, where we go, where we can’t go. But then you also need to have somebody who has grown up in a galley carrying luggage. I’m 60 in October. When I was 27, I said, “Okay, how can I see the world without having money?” So in 1993, I was hired on the Queen Elizabeth II , then went to hotels, cruises, and in 46 years I traveled to 186 countries. I was allowed to live onboard and basically extend any service, any dream that a resident had.

What’s the difference between this superyacht and the World ? 

The World is now 23 years old. She was created in the late ’80s. She looks like a cruise ship. And the  Ulyssia is a yacht — the designer says this is his masterpiece.

We never had many amenities on the World . Here, we have a deli. We have a library with a card and games room. We have a table-tennis room. We have two paddle-tennis courts all inside, a multipurpose sports deck up there where the helicopters are, two hangers, two submarines to go down to the ocean, seven restaurants.

Then, we have this inflatable marina off the back of the boat. Imagine we’re near Bermuda. It’s a beautiful day. The sea is calm. We stop and we inflate this — it takes an hour — and we have tenders. You can go diving right there off the ship. The sea is yours. This marina is something the World could never ever have done, because there’s no space in the boat to keep that. The World was more elderly, a bit elderly retired. This is way younger. Why? Because we have so many amenities and offer adventure. Here, we are offering fewer apartments with more space. The balconies are huge. Luxury, for them, means space, time and getting whatever they wish, whenever, wherever. Freedom.

Freedom , in a contained location — 

Yes, and in a safe environment, completely protected against any danger. If a resident says, “I want to bring my family there, I want to be safe, I want to have no worries,” safety needs to be core to us. They want the freedom to do what they do at home — to run around with suits, jewelry. And if they are smart enough to say, “I want to go and see real scenarios, not luxury hotels,” they can go places where there’s no luxury and see how the world really works. That’s what this community wants.

Sounds like a security nightmare. 

We will hire ex-Mossad physically, to be on the ship. On the World , we partnered with Marine Guard, one of the world’s best safety and security companies . It provides technical and physical support. And whenever we went to critical places — for example, when we went through the Gulf of Aden, I brought in Israeli snipers to come on the boat. Nobody, no pirate on earth can come in past them. Then on shore excursions, we have every form of security that you can imagine. Satellite images. Images underwater, over water. When we went to Antarctica, to the Northwest Passage — meeting with the Inuits, the Aborigines — you need people who know them. You need people who safeguard you. In the Antarctic, you are only allowed to go with Zodiacs to the beaches. You need people who know that, who know the sea lions, the penguins. We bring them onboard — 20 or 25 people who know everything about every area. And when we do expeditions, we bring on EYOS, one of the greatest expedition leaders in the world, which goes to places like the Titanic .

Is this, like the Titanic , experimental in any way?

No, there are similar yachts. But in four years, when she will hopefully leave port, she will be the greenest yacht of this size ever built. And at that time, we may build for whatever is available in terms of fuel, whether it’s methanol or nuclear. There are vessels already going nuclear, military vessels.

But isn’t this all risky? 

It’s the opposite. You will see more and more environments like this at sea. Why? Because you can escape anything! If there’s an outbreak in New York, a big virus, you just won’t go there. If there’s a war there, you just don’t go there. If there’s a storm, you don’t go there.

So this will be a way for the global elite, basically, to pay to avoid any problem.

Is it going to be a one percent community? Yes, obviously, but they need to do good around the world, otherwise they cannot come to the community.

Imagine the following. We will have a medical center onboard. We have MRI machines. We have a dentistry. Our doctors, when we go to the west coast of Africa, to Senegal, we can have our doctors go out and help. And as we go around the world, we will help to map the ocean floor. We’ll have tools available to measure and send these to oceanic institutions that then take this data. So we are helping to make the world a better place. And that’s the legacy.

How are you going to gauge whether the people who want to live here also want to do good? 

There’s a very tough background check before being allowed to buy. So can it be that a Colombian drug lord or a Russian weapons dealer comes and says, “Oh, I’m going to take ten?” No, that can’t happen. We’re not a community for people from mainland China who don’t speak English and want to spit around. Or aggressive Russians. We are not a community for sheikhs from any Arab countries. And I have nothing against the Chinese and Russians. I love everybody. I’ve been everywhere. But they just don’t fit here, and they won’t come. We want like-minded golf players, tennis players, joggers, bikers, F1 drivers.

We will have roughly 30 to 35 percent Europeans, 30 to 35 percent North Americans, including from Canada, possibly a few from Mexico City, a few from São Paulo. Then we have about 20 percent from Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan. Then we expect to have about 10 percent of people from all over, we don’t know where. It could be anywhere.

They’ll need a certain amount of money to get into this boat and I assume, therefore, that you can’t be that picky. 

No, we can’t. But we try to be. It’s a balance. We meet them three, four, five, six times. We invite them, show them something, then they say, “Oh, I trust these people. I believe in them.” It’s a slow process.

Can a buyer get kicked off?

Oh, absolutely.

What’s the justice system?

There’s a board that’s voted in and we have our chairman on the board. Almost all of the members are people who have either been on yachts, have their own yacht, or have led organizations.

If people have their own yachts, why would they sign up for this? 

They might have a beautiful yacht of a hundred meters, but they can’t hire all these education guides, explorers all the time. We have 22 guest suites. Imagine we’re coming to Japan. Blossom season. We bring an ex Japanese prime minister onboard, maybe a three-star Michelin chef. We bring them on, let’s say, three weeks before. And they lecture. We can have experts speak about anything. Volcanoes, health and wellness, food and beverage, politics, archeology.

And they have you, who’s been to 186 countries. 

Exactly. So when I do speak to people who want to buy and invite them for lunch or a coffee, they listen because they know, Oh, this guy has been there. You don’t need to tell them something that you think can happen. You can actually tell them a story. When I went to Antarctica the last time, in 2009, on the way back to the Zodiac, I am walking and these big elephant seals — those are the big guys, like three tons and ten feet long — and all of a sudden, out of nowhere, there’s a big sound like MWUGHOWUGH and a big one came up, out of the sand. I stood there frozen. These are moments when you think, Is this really happening to me? How fortunate, how lucky am I to be able to experience moments like this? And all the wealthy people say the same.

Best yacht 2024: European Yacht of the Year winners

Toby Hodges is one of the 12 strong jury who tested each of the 21 shortlisted boats aiming to be crowned best yacht 2024. He gives his verdict on the winners and nominees

In what is dubbed as ‘Yachting’s Oscars’, The European Yacht of the Year 2024 winners were announced this evening, Saturday 20 January 2024. The awards this year comprise winners of four categories and a special mention prize for sustainability.

The European Yacht of the Year continues to be the focal point of my year and testing programme and brings much to many. Firstly to you, the readers, sailors and yacht buyers, it helps show what to look for and why, what trends are coming up, what works and what doesn’t.

To us, the 12-strong jury, leading yacht test critics in their individual countries, it is the ideal opportunity to comparatively test multiple yachts and weigh up our varying critiques – whether those are stemming from Med, Atlantic or Baltic based backgrounds.

And I believe it has helped and continues to benefit the yards too, to encourage the production of more refined and better value yachts, with less flaws, for which they should be recognised.

All 12 jury members seatrial each yacht individually before we all discuss in detail the pros and cons we found, what works at sea and what doesn’t. We then analyse them further before voting on the best yachts of 2024 in their various categories. The result is the most impartial and coveted awards for new production yachts available worldwide.

Our trials were held over two weeks in the autumn of 2023 in La Rochelle and Port Ginesta, Barcelona.

Whilst we concentrate on the five winners below, all 21 yachts shortlisted were done so for good reason, all have interesting or different features and many will have been very close to winning themselves. We will go into these in more detail, here online, in video and of course in Yachting World (March 2024).

Best yacht 2024

Best luxury cruiser.

Nominees: Arcona 50 ; Contest 50CS ; Jeanneau Yachts 55 ; Xc47

What defines luxury will differ according to personal opinion and from boat to boat. The Contest 50CS for example ( also available in different layout as the 49Cs )  is an archetype luxury cruiser in my eyes, one built to the highest standards and that could take you to most waters in impeccable comfort.

Equally the Xc47 is a wonderfully engineered and thought out yacht for distance cruising, in particular for those who also enjoy hands-on helming pleasure (indeed its marketed by X-Yachts as the best bluewater cruiser ever ). And the Jeanneau Yachts 55 offers a new concept in comfort on deck while at anchor and a unique accommodation layout.

Winner: Arcona 50

When you enter such a fiercely competitive market as the 50ft luxury performance sector currently is, you better get it right. And the jury felt Arcona managed that. This watershed design for the traditional Swedish brand, by X-Yachts co-founder and former designer Niels Jeppesen, is a big, contemporary new Arcona, one that sees it transition from its cruiser-racer heritage and classic interiors (which some may miss).

And it’s a stunner – inside and out. Its looks are backed up by high build and finish quality and performance on the water. While I doubt it’ll be raced (like the smaller Arconas typically are), or will suit typical bluewater use, it offers a purity of performance push-button sailing. Where the Arcona is a handsome prospect upwind in a light breeze, it transforms into a powerful reaching machine with stacks of control.

As chairman of our EYOTY jury Jochen Rieker puts it: “The boat certainly did not win for her somewhat borrowed looks or her lack of visual innovation. Yet she wins simply by checking all the boxes in all other respects. Slipping along gracefully in the lightest of airs, holding her stride and her balance in more demanding conditions, offering warmth, light and this reassuring feeling of utter quality down below – there simply isn’t anything to fault. In a busy market segment this 50-footer stands tall.”

Starting price ex VAT: €879,000

Jury Comments

“Her sailing performance is nothing less than exceptional, in speed, stability and precision, and her layout is smart and practical both on and below deck.” Pasi Nuutinen, Finland.

“A super modern yacht with familiar X-style looks which impresses in terms of sailing, appearance as well as workmanship.” Roland Duller, Austria.

“Not only a feast for the eyes, it also sailed the best out of all boats, in all conditions that we encountered during the week – in light airs as well as in breeze.” Axel Nissen-Lie, Norway.

Best Multihull

Nominees: HH44 ; Neel 52 ; Outremer 52

The small number of entrants in this category this year does not reflect the rich range or huge demand for multihulls. Many new models were launched by the big yards in the preceding years and they are struggling to keep up with bulging order books.

However, these three shortlisted represented a handsome pick of the latest fast ocean cruisers. While Neel continues to enjoy its cruising trimaran niche , with accommodation on the bridgedeck combined with the type of sailing enjoyment and feedback monohull sailors will appreciate, these two catamaran brands are responding to an insatiable demand for high end space and pace cruising.

The HH44 seemingly manages that while being one of the most innovative new production yachts I have sailed. From its looks to layout, to practical on deck solutions such as side entries and transom gates, it’s the incorporation of the first parallel hybrid electric drive units which really makes this high tech high performance cat stand out.

In the end however, it was the Outremer 52 which won the vote for being such an enjoyable well rounded fast cruiser in all aspects.

Winner: Outremer 52

My highlight test of 2023? Sailing this Outremer 52 for 200 miles over two days and nights! Quite how such a large vessel, one that is capable of doing multiple laps of the planet in true comfort, is also capable of providing such enjoyable sailing is the secret sauce that helps scoop this prize.

And it was pushed hard by the HH. But the Outremer is such a well rounded, measured and thought out yacht for bluewater cruising at a reliable speed – it’s the full package, a dream boat for family bluewater sailing and arguably their best and most refined model to date.

There is too much to point out here, from the variety of helm positions, including completely protected, to the well conceived spaces, so I would recommend reading our full Outremer 52 test report.

“The measure of all things in the performance catamaran segment. The perfect symbiosis of sailing performance, comfort, and overall enjoyable movement on the water.” Roland Duller, Austria.

“Outremer is the clear market leader in the performance sector of bluewater multihulls. The flawlessly built and superbly finished 52 easily sails at double-digit speeds and offers real comfort at the same time.” Lori Schüpbach, Switzerland.

“A catamaran with about the same comfort as a “normal” cruising multihull, but with almost twice the speed, how is it possible?” Sebastien Mainguet, France.

Best Family Cruiser

Nominees: Bavaria C46 : Beneteau Oceanis 37.1; Dufour 41 ; Elan Impression 43 ; Hanse 410; Maxus 35; RM 1380

A crop of the latest 35-45ft mainstream production yachts, including the ultra spacious Dufour 410 , now a charter special model, and the smaller sister to the award winning Hanse 460, plus a couple more less well known or more niche yachts, made for a competitive grouping this year.

In the end there was one stand out model, from the looks, volume and performance to the time spent in engineering it to a quality repeatable level: the Bavaria C46

Winner: Bavaria C46

The relationship between Bavaria and Cossutti Yacht Design continues to flourish and produce standout results in its second generation. The Bavaria C46’s modern full shape brings incredible deck and accommodation space yet simultaneously still manages to do so on a hull which really performs and rewards through its single rudder feedback.

From design to engineering to finish quality, the perceived richness of this yacht stands out, which is no mean feat in a mass production size and brand. So much so that other big yards may struggle to compete.

Best Special Yacht

Nominees: Cape Cod 767; Flaar 24; Jeanneau Sun Fast 30 OD; Pointer 30; Saffier Se 24 Lite ; Shogun 43

What do you when you have yachts that are as diverse as innovative daysailers , lake sportsboat, a recyclable one-design and an elite high-end carbon race yacht? Well we define them as ‘Special’. And this year’s eclectic bunch really were special and full of interesting new ideas. From the folding coamings and retractable electric drive on the Bordeaux built Cape Cod daysailer, to the swivel seat on the amiable Pointer to the exquisite composite craftsmanship on the Shogun 43.

In the end, no one knows how to win this award better than the family run Saffier yard, king of the daysailers.

Winner: Saffier Se24 Lite

Surely the hardest task is to exemplify the very best of what you do within the smallest model you can? Yet that is what Saffier has achieved with its Se 24 Lite. Saffiers just keep getting better and this one is impressive enough to secure yet another EYOTY award for this Dutch yard’s fifth win.

Modern hull shape, with flat underwater sections (particularly aft) combines with high form stability for a stiff, fast, fun ride in both directions. A simple boat to manage, whether rigging, sailing, or maintaining, the Se24 is also very smart – including being an eclectically driven boat which uses a single 24V system, charged via solar integrated into the deck.

A single point lift makes launching easy and therefore trailing possible. And the fine-tune mainsheet system within the boom is just one example of how well this yard develops its boats to ensure they can be solo sailed easily.

This is the full package from engineering to finish quality to the smallest well thought out details. And like the very best yachts, the Saffier Se24 looks good, is a joy to sail and puts a smile on your face.

Special mention award for Sustainability – Bestevaer 36

Think big, choose small. Again we see the culmination of a lifetime of good ideas and practical experience from a veteran designer and builder pairing poured into a comparatively compact package. Designed by and built for veteran racing sailor, designer and J Class supremo Gerard Dykstra to downsize from his previous Bestevaer – in both size and cruising areas – from past high latitudes exploits to future plans to visit his local wetlands.

Favourite features of the Bestevaer 36 include the deep protected cockpit and doghouse, the deep stowage in both, the drop down transom step cum swim platform, the kick up rudder blade and of course the centreplate which helps allow you to dry out in most corners of the planet.

This baby Bestevaer also examples many of the merits of sustainable boatbuilding KM has long incorporated with its aluminium builds. From the recycled aluminium used for the hull and structures, to the lack of coatings and the choice of insulation, the entire footprint and life cycle of the boat has been closely evaluated – and it is this which we are highlighting, celebrating and helping to showcase today. The downside is it comes with a pricetag more associated with the custom yachts KM is so versed at producing…

As yachts get larger in size, they generally also increase in fuel capacity and consumption, running costs and also environmental impact. However, in recent years, there has been a change in the world of superyachts. Today, we are witnessing more and more yachts take steps towards efficiency, reducing fuel usage and innovating when it comes to improving sustainability credentials.

Much like aviation, bio and sustainable fuels are becoming far more accessible and prevalent in yachting. There has also been an uptick in the use of hybrid propulsion — the use of a combination of different energy sources — most commonly this results in a combination of both diesel and battery power. There has also been a renaissance of the sail, with some owners looking to harness the power of the wind to aid their transportation. It also undeniably looks superb.  

As many yacht owners and potential buyers begin to focus more on the sustainability of these vessels, yacht builders are taking note. Here, Elite Traveler takes a closer look at some of the most impressive eco-friendly yachts to have hit the water during the last two decades. Launched by Dutch yard Royal Huisman in 2008, 190-ft ketch Ethereal was a trendsetter that paved the way for future ‘eco’ superyachts. At 350 ft, Black Pearl is the largest sailing superyacht in the world. She is certainly not inconspicuous but, despite her size, she is extremely eco-friendly. Delivered by Oceanco in 2016, Black Pearl is said to have the capability to cross the Atlantic using zero fossil fuel. Plans for undertaking this particular feat were underway when Covid-19 hit and delayed this attempt, but her captain, Chris Gartner, says that the owner and the Black Pearl’s team are committed to going ahead with that as soon as possible.

Black Pearl incorporates features that ensure a lower environmental impact: propellers that can generate electricity when operating in ‘regeneration mode’ and, one of her most impressive features, her sails also double as a source of power. Measuring an incredible 31,215 sq ft, Black Pearl’s sails have built-in solar panels that create electricity that is then stored so it can be put to use elsewhere as needed. The DynaRig sails also allow the yacht to be easily operated under sail power as much as possible, greatly reducing the need for fuel.

Finnish builders Nautor’s Swan has joined the trend for hybrid yachts with its Swan 88 Hybrid model, which has a hybrid-electric propulsion system that marks a new era for the yard’s Maxi range. This was a mandate of her owner, who wanted his long-distance cruising yacht to be as green as possible. Canova more than met the mark and carries an impressive line-up of modern technologies including a power regeneration system that, in theory, allows a never-ending supply for the yacht to make use of. The Arksen 85 — dubbed Project Ocean — the first self-proclaimed “ultimate marine exploration vessel” to be built by Arksen Yachts. Created to travel the world, with a stable, hardy design, the Arksen 85 is intended to explore with low environmental impact. She’s built in an eco-friendly way, with her hull and superstructure made from low-carbon, recycled aluminum. A range of up to 7,000 nm will give her plenty of scope for adventures, and her eco credentials include a solar array option for zero-carbon electrical power and a hybrid propulsion system.

Buying an Arksen yacht offers several bolt-ons such as membership in the Arksen Explorers’ Club, which helps owners make the most of their vessels, and an invitation to join the Arksen Foundation, where owners are invited to pledge 10% of their vessels’ sea time to ocean-exploration projects. Project AQUA made headlines around the world when rumors started that she was being built for Bill Gates. This speculation was later dispelled but, in the process, the world got a good look at the 367-ft vessel and so too a glimpse of what the future of yacht design might look like. The work of Lateral Naval Architects in collaboration with Sinot Yacht Design, hydrogen-powered Project AQUA represents how yachting might one day achieve zero carbon usage.

“For Project AQUA we set ourselves an objective of using near-future technology,” explains Simon Brealey, principal mechanical engineer at Lateral. “Liquid hydrogen has the potential to be created from renewable sources via electrolysis and as such can be considered a zero carbon fuel with the only local emissions being water. Project AQUA demonstrates [that] the onboard technology to enable a zero carbon project is ready, and we hope that it acts to inspire superyacht owners, shipyards, the hydrogen infrastructure industry and the wider maritime industry.”

The Sinot team used “an integrated and highly poetic design approach” when creating her: Cascading exterior decks are paired with a minimalist Japanese beach-style interior that provides living spaces in perfect balance with the water on which the vessel sits.

Dutch yard Feadship now has a good number of eco yachts to its name, and 312-ft hybrid yacht Bliss is the most recent to have hit the water. Launched in May 2021, Bliss benefits from the very latest advances in technology with an all-new hybrid propulsion system. De Voogt Naval Architects were heavily involved in the design and engineering of the hybrid system, which will allow the yacht to sail in diesel-electric mode. In a win-win for comfort and for the world, “this package helps to protect the environment and provides premium comfort for all who step aboard,” says Feadship. Designed for family fun and to see the world this magnificent custom yacht is a timeless triumph.

Eco Explorer

A collaboration between Dutch yard Feadship and French design studio Merveille Yachting, the Eco Explorer concept is described by Feadship as “a genuinely eco-friendly superyacht.” The yacht combines all the best elements of motor and sail yachts in one efficient package. She features a mast system that has fully automated wings twice as powerful as a standard sailing yacht rig, while the use of sail power reduces fuel use as well.

Energy is also harnessed from a trio of onboard solutions including wind turbines, solar panels and underwater turbines. These, together with other reduction elements, add up to the use of an estimated 50-70% less fossil fuel, and more than three times the range of an equivalent boat. The 55-ft beam ensures plenty of space on board, with an inviting interior and vast beach club that includes a 49-ft swimming pool. The perfect yacht for seeing the world guilt-free, “the Eco Explorer is on the forefront of cutting-edge, environmentally friendly technology,” says Feadship.

A mighty 328-ft sailing yacht concept, Vento is the brainchild of Nuvolari-Lenard. First revealed in June 2021 at the Venice Boat Show, this behemoth was created by design duo Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard to be a “manifesto for environmental protection” and a visual appeal to superyacht designers to create truly green yachts. This radical concept will use the wind as its main source of propulsion and its slipstream hull will ensure it moves efficiently through the water. Its Wing Sail sail plan is more efficient than traditional rigs, allowing for better performance. A diesel-electric system with variable speed generators and variable pitch propellors will allow operations to be adjusted to achieve maximum efficiency.

Nuvolari and Lenard both believe that it is not enough to design a yacht that is “greener,” and instead our entire mentalities and attitudes towards yacht design needs to shift. “ Vento speaks to a market sensitive to environmental issues, worried about the future of the marine ecosystem, which is ready to do its part,” they say. Vento is their testimony and, they believe, proof that a truly green yacht needn’t mean compromising on innovative designs and luxurious living.

Project Crystal

The size of the 308-ft Project Crystal is an eco yacht option for buyers who can’t let go of the idea of a very large yacht. She, like the rest on this list, has been designed in a way that will allow efficient operations and energy savings. “As with all our designs, the impact of a vessel on its context is crucial — environmental considerations extend from the controllable pitch propellers which maximize efficiency, through the hydrodynamic optimizations of the hull, hybrid power systems and glazing arrangements that minimize solar gain,” says Nick Stark, naval architect at Nick Stark Design.

Project Crystal is named for the distinctive crystalline lattice that forms a striking part of the exterior profile. Designed to be a sanctuary, Project Crystal is a safe and relaxing space that is both beautiful on board and from afar. “We wanted to create an aesthetic that is celebratory,” says Stark. “The lines flow up and across, both lifting our gaze and also guiding it to what is around us: the people, the community and the environment”. The design is able to achieve swift global navigation and she has been crafted with a relentless focus on hydrodynamic fundamentals – the sleek unadorned underwater lines tick the boxes for both fuel efficiency and superb seakeeping. Not to mention she looks pretty exceptional too.

Sunreef 80 Eco

The Sunreef 80 Eco catamaran design is described by Sunreef Yachts as “an eco-responsible luxury craft combining electric propulsion, superyacht living spaces, reliable sailing performance and the latest green technologies in the industry.” The Sunreef 80 Eco is the largest in the yard’s Eco range, which boasts a large number of appealing ‘green’ features. These include state-of-the-art batteries, sustainable interiors, wind generators and smart water management. In fact, the entire Sunreef brand has undergone a central shift and rebrand towards producing “eco luxury” catamarans.

Sunreef Yachts have worked hard on developing their own proprietary solar panel system, which has been integrated into the Sunreef 80 Eco design, allowing for 1,765 sq ft of ultra-light solar panels installed around the vessel. Pairing comfort and green technology, she has been designed for long range offshore cruising in total silence and in harmony with her surroundings. The entire design can be customized to suit her owners, with plenty of light-filled spaces in close proximity to the ocean. The first Sunreef 80 Eco is currently in build and due to make her debut in 2021.

Tillberg Design of Sweden (TDoS) revealed its interpretation of an eco superyacht, the 265-ft Aegir 2.0 . The design house describes it as “the sailing yacht with the lowest possible environmental footprint.” A big claim indeed. The design has a wind-electric propulsion system that recharges her batteries as she sails. This means her range is theoretically infinite – the world will be her oyster. A Dynarig sail plan will ensure excellent performance, while the trimaran hull delivers excellent seakeeping.

Her eco credentials do not mean a sacrifice on comfort as Aegir 2.0 has plenty of luxury features including a swimming pool, beach club space and spacious rooms. A minimalist Scandinavian style interior pairs a subtle color palette with natural materials, complemented by large windows that fill all spaces with light.

Lürssen’s fuel cell yacht

There is little public information available about an exciting new project from German yard Lürssen Yachts, but it certainly warrants a place in this list for the feat of being the yard’s first yacht with fuel cell technology. Now in build, the yacht has been commissioned by a forward thinking and technology driven owner. This project is huge news as it represents a big step towards an emission free Lürssen superyacht. Flanking the traditional generators, the fuel cell will offer many benefits including the ability to anchor for 15 days or cruise 1,000 miles at slow speed with no emissions.

Complementing this new build project, the yard has set up an Innovation Laboratory that will “simulate and test the integration and operation of a Marine Hybrid Fuel Cell System on board a yacht powered by methanol.” Lürssen is certainly looking to the future and has ambitious goals to lead the field in the construction of emission free yachts.

Video surveillance cameras retrieved from the wreckage of tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s yacht may solve the mystery of why it sank in a storm off Sicily last month.

Divers from the Italian Navy retrieved video surveillance equipment, including computers and hard drives, that will be analyzed in specialized labs, according to a report Saturday.

Lynch, his daughter Hannah, 18, and five other people died when the Bayesian went down in severe weather, believed to be a meteorological phenomenon called a downburst, which is similar to a small tornado.

Prosecutors investigating the sinking deployed six elite divers from a special forces unit called Comsubin, who made repeated dives down to the sunken yacht with the help of a hyperbaric chamber.

Recaldo Thomas, the ship’s Antiguan-Canadian chef, Jonathan Bloomer, the Morgan Stanley International bank chairman, his wife Judy, and Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer, and his wife Neda, were the other victims of the Aug. 19 tragedy.

Fifteen people, including Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, survived when they were rescued by a nearby yacht.

James Cutfield, 51, the New Zealand captain of the Bayesian, has not been charged with any crimes but is under investigation for multiple counts of manslaughter and causing a deadly shipwreck, along with two British crew members: Tim Parker Eaton, 56, and Matthew Griffiths, 22.

Rescue teams off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, searching for the last missing person after the British-flagged yacht Bayesian, owned by tech tycoon Mike Lynch, sank due to severe weather.

Under the Italian legal system, being placed under investigation does not imply guilt and does not necessarily mean that charges will be brought.

Officials plan to raise the Bayesian and bring it to land in order to fully investigate how it went down in just 16 minutes after being hit by the storm.

It is currently lying at a depth of 165 feet, about half a mile off the coast of Porticello.

More awful tragedies at sea - like the sinking of superyacht Bayesian - will happen again and again unless the world fights climate change now, experts have warned.

Mike Lynch , who was described as "Britain's Bill Gates" for his success in the tech industry, and his teenage daughter were among the seven people killed after the vessel was struck in a powerful storm last month. It is thought the weather caused a freak water spout , which develop downwards in thunderstorms, and this struck the boat's huge mast.

Freak storms have happened across the Mediterranean this summer and last due to climate change, meteorologists have told the Mirror . A fierce storm battered Formentera, a small Balearic Island, on Wednesday August 14, sinking several boats. Dramatic footage seen by the Mirror shows at least one sailing vessel sent crashing into rocks because of the sheer force of the wind. One experienced fisherman wrote online the storm was "e very sailor's worst nightmare."

And a rare storm, known as a Medicane (Mediterranean hurricane), pounded western Greece at the end of August. Streets were flooded, trees uprooted and residents across the Ionian islands of Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaca experienced power cuts.

These are happening because climate change is causing temperatures to rise - to hotter than 40C in places this summer - and so huge amounts of energy are in the atmosphere above land and sea across the Mediterranean, climate change experts told us. This is making storms more intense and the consequences could continue to be catastrophic.

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel , told the Mirror : "I am very concerned about this. It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it's when and where.

"In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - Mediterranean hurricanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 "Daniel" medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there. The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.

"In the eastern coast of the Med, between Cyprus and Israel, we had some massive thunderstorms last April, when the number of flashes we picked up with our lightning detection system was more than 400,000 in 24 hours, which is totally off of the charts.

"I would argue that we have seen considerably more unusual or severe events that constitute deviations from the normal. These have become more noticeable because we are in a disrupted state (of climate change)... So most definitely climate change plays a role. The Mediterranean basin is a climate change hotspot, and is warming faster than most regions on Earth. Already, we exceed the global average and are warmer by +1.5C, compared to the 1951-1980 average, which is usually considered the benchmark for comparison."

The bodies of Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the vessel , along with Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were recovered among the wreckage of the Bayesian, one of the world's largest sailing yachts.

Mr and Mrs Morvillo, and Mr and Mrs Bloomer did not drown, but instead suffocated to death in air bubbles that filled with carbon dioxide , it was claimed this week. The four tourists reportedly had no water in their lungs, raising the harrowing possibility they may have been conscious as the yacht sank.

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica claimed the lungs of banker, Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his wife Judy were "not full of water and neither were their stomachs or trachea". They have also reported that the couple "suffocated" after oxygen ran out in an air bubble below deck that had formed after the yacht sank. Dr Lynch also died of suffocation due to a lack of oxygen, his autopsy on Saturday showed.

Around 12mm of rain was forecast to fall in just three hours across Porticello, Italy, near where the boat was anchored overnight on Sunday August 18 to Monday August 19. Downpours and gusts battered the boat, which is understood to have capsized.

Speaking to the Mirror , Dr Pedro Beltran-Alvarez, senior lecturer in Health and Climate Change at University of Hull, said he was "not surprised" to see the recent frequency of intense storms across Italy and nearby countries. He said the Mediterranean is "one of the most vulnerable" areas of the world to the impact of climate change.

The academic, who has worked at University of Hull for nine years, continued: "It is not surprising that we are in this situation. The Mediterranean is one of the most vulnerable places to climate change. It is vulnerable because of the latitude, the position it is in really so there is nothing we can do about it in terms of the geography of this region.

"Extreme weather events are expected to increase over the next decade or so, and that is because of climate change. There could be more tragedies like that in Sicily and people who are particularly vulnerable to megastorms, for example, are people living by the sea, so fishermen, people going on yachts, or people travelling by sea or people going on cruises. So the key, I think, is to know your vulnerabilities.

"I think something like 90 per cent of the general population in the UK is either concerned or very concerned about climate change. In my professional field, climate change is accepted as the biggest health threat to humanity this century so everyone in public health knows climate change is the greatest challenge to public health. I am reasonably concerned based on the science but this also presents an opportunity to tackle it.

"I spent a few weeks in Catalonia each summer and see first-hand the impacts of climate change. I think this year the hottest day where I was 43C. It is really difficult to do anything between 1pm and 6pm, and there is concern there for vulnerable people. Everyone is vulnerable to climate change but specific groups of the population are particularly vulnerable, especially the elderly or those dementia, for example, but climate change is, I always say, inclusive by design."

Italian authorities have expanded their investigation into the deaths of the seven people on the yacht to include two crew members as well as the captain, according to news agencies in the nation.

The investigation is now said to include ship engineer Tim Parker Eaton and sailor Matthew Griffith. Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step. Currently, the Bayesian rests on its right side at a depth of approximately 50m (164ft).

An armed guard assigned to Dr Lynch during his US trial - after which he was cleared of fraud charges - recently spoke of their unlikely friendship. Rolo Igno said he believes Mike and Hannah "woke up in a better place" . He spoke of Hannah as a "beautiful soul" and of Dr Lynch as "one of the most extraordinary individuals I've ever known".

Mr Igno said: "I don’t know what everyone’s beliefs are, but I believe that Mike and Hannah woke up in a far better place. Till we see each other again. Hannah, take care of your daddy up there for me. Down here, I’ve got your mom and sister."

Mr Igno said the last time he saw Dr Lynch, he had thanked him for opening his Chelsea home, his Loudham (Suffolk) estate and "beloved Bayesian" to him and his family.

He added: "Over the past year, I had the privilege of spending almost every waking moment with Mike while he was in custody in San Francisco. I was part of the security detail, tasked with ensuring he didn’t escape and flee the country. It was unlike any other detail that I’ve ever worked and would later discover a life-changing one."

Divers hunting for clues on how Mike Lynch’s superyacht sank make discovery

Italian Navy divers have recovered video surveillance equipment from the wreckage of billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht that could explain how it sank.

The British tech tycoon’s boat had been moored near the  port  of Porticello on 19 August  when it sank during the early hours of the morning . It is now lying 50m below the surface.

Among those killed were Mr Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who had been due to begin studying at Oxford University in September, as well as four other family friends and associates .

Mr Lynch’s wife, along with 14 others, survived and were rescued by a nearby vessel that was unscathed.

The highly specialised divers are now combing the wreckage on behalf of prosecutors investigating the sinking.

On Thursday, they recovered parts of the deck, computer material, video surveillance systems, hard drives and various other equipment, a source told news agency Reuters .

The electronic devices will be sent to specialised labs outside of Sicily to check their condition and possibly recover data, the source added.

It is suspected that a “downburst” of strong wind resulted in the boat sinking. The video could show if the crews left doors open, which might have allowed the yacht to flood.

Daniele Governale, a coastguard official in Palermo, said the divers were using a hyperbaric chamber that allowed them to make repeated dives of up to 40 minutes as part of the search.

The coastguard has also taken underwater images with a remotely operated vehicle that will help draw up a plan to salvage the yacht .

Jonathan Bloomer, the international chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank; his wife Judith, a psychotherapist; Christopher Morvillo, a US lawyer; and his wife Neda, a jewellery designer also died in the sinking.

Also killed was the yacht’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, whose body was  recovered  floating near the wreckage.

Three crew members, including New Zealand captain James Cutfield, are under investigation for manslaughter and shipwreck.

Under Italian laws, being investigated does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow.

Sources close to Mr Cutfield told the Italian newspaper  Corriere Della Sera  that he is living through the darkest days of his life.

Prosecutors have said their investigation will take time, and will require the wreck to be pulled up from the sea bed.

According to the authorities, efforts to raise the yacht will be made by the vessel’s owner, UK company Revton, which is controlled by Mr Lynch’s widow Angela Bacares.

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

News of the sinking left CEO of The Italian Sea Group Giovanni Costantino in ‘sadness on the one hand and disbelief on the other’.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

On board the world's largest private residence yacht

The largest private residence yacht on the water - 196 metre superyacht The World - has welcomed back residents on board and will resume her extensive sailing program after more than a year in July 2021 . We take a look inside her interiors to reveal the luxury apartments and facilities on offer to those who call her home.

Apartments on board The World

The World has a total of 165 luxury residences on board and an average occupancy of 150 to 200 people at a time. There are currently 150 families originating from 20 different countries residing on board in apartments ranging from studio size to three-bedroom homes.

Marina restaurant

There are a total of six communal restaurants for residents to enjoy on board The World . Dishes served are inspired by the current location in which the superyacht is moored, with the culinary team sourcing ingredients from local markets, sometimes joined by residents on their excursions. Pictured above is Marina, a steakhouse with breathtaking views to the outdoors.

Three-bedroom residences

A three-bedroom residence such as the one pictured above offers an inviting grand foyer, a kitchen filled with premium cooking appliances, a dining area, three full bathrooms, a personal library, a living room with a fireplace and generous balcony space from which to enjoy the ever-changing views.

With outdoor balconies running the length of The World , residents can opt to enjoy sleeping under the stars in an al fresco "bali bed" for an atmospheric experience in warm weather climates.

The swimming pool

The World offers an on-board spa centre for residents to enjoy treatments and fitness activities, including a swimming pool and a fitness deck with outdoor equipment and machines that help you stay in shape while taking in the ocean views.

When the weather permits residents can dine al fresco at Tides restaurant, which offers health-conscious Mediterranean-style cuisine such as fresh homemade pasta, accompanied by a backdrop of ocean views.

The World at sea

The World will resume her sailing program in summer 2021 with stops scheduled in the Greek islands, Cyprus, Croatia, Italy, France, Spain and the Madeira Islands. In the latter part of the year, she will head to the Caribbean and Central America to explore Bermuda, The Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, the Leeward Islands, the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and Guatemala.
