From across the Atlantic Ocean and through the Gulf of Mexico, two ships converged, delivering key spacecraft and rocket components of NASA’s Artemis campaign to the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

On Sept. 3, ESA (European Space Agency) marked a milestone in the Artemis III mission as its European-built service module for NASA’s Orion spacecraft completed a transatlantic journey from Bremen, Germany, to Port Canaveral, Florida, where technicians moved it to nearby NASA Kennedy. Transported aboard the Canopée cargo ship, the European Service Module—assembled by Airbus with components from 10 European countries and the U.S.—provides propulsion, thermal control, electrical power, and water and oxygen for its crews.

“Seeing multi-mission hardware arrive at the same time demonstrates the progress we are making on our Artemis missions,” said Amit Kshatriya, deputy associate administrator, Moon to Mars Program, at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We are going to the Moon together with our industry and international partners and we are manufacturing, assembling, building, and integrating elements for Artemis flights.”

NASA’s Pegasus barge, the agency’s waterway workhorse for transporting large hardware by sea, ferried multi-mission hardware for the agency’s SLS (Space Launch System) rocket, the Artemis II launch vehicle stage adapter, the “boat-tail” of the core stage for Artemis III, the core stage engine section for Artemis IV, along with ground support equipment needed to move and assemble the large components. The barge pulled into NASA Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39B Turn Basin Thursday.

The spacecraft factory inside NASA Kennedy’s Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building is set to buzz with additional activity in the coming months. With the Artemis II Orion crew and service modules stacked together and undergoing testing, and engineers outfitting the Artemis III and IV crew modules, engineers soon will connect the newly arrived European Service Module to the crew module adapter, which houses electronic equipment for communications, power, and control, and includes an umbilical connector that bridges the electrical, data, and fluid systems between the crew and service modules.

The SLS rocket’s cone-shaped launch vehicle stage adapter connects the core stage to the upper stage and protects the rocket’s flight computers, avionics, and electrical devices in the upper stage system during launch and ascent. The adapter will be taken to Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building in preparation for Artemis II rocket stacking operations.

The boat-tail, which will be used during the assembly of the SLS core stage for Artemis III, is a fairing-like structure that protects the bottom end of the core stage and RS-25 engines . This hardware, picked up at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, will join the Artemis III core stage engine section housed in the spaceport’s Space Systems Processing Facility.

The Artemis IV SLS core stage engine section arrived from NASA Michoud and also will transfer to the center’s processing facility ahead of final assembly.

Under the Artemis campaign, NASA will land the first woman, first person of color, and its first international partner astronaut on the lunar surface, establishing long-term exploration for scientific discovery and preparing for human missions to Mars. The agency’s SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft, and supporting ground systems, along with the human landing system, next-generation spacesuits and rovers, and Gateway, serve as NASA’s foundation for deep space exploration.

Botin 65, ARTEMIS

Knierim Yachtbau, Botin 65 Built 2013 / US$1,250,000, US Duty paid

Botin 65, ARTEMIS 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

ARTEMIS was constructed in Germany in 2013 by Kneriem Yachtbau to the highest quality in Pre Preg Carbon with a Foam core, based on a design by Botin and Partners. She was initially conceived to travel the world with fast passage times and to compete in the world’s most prestigious yacht races, a goal she has achieved admirably. Another important aspect of the brief was her capability to be effectively sailed for both cruising and racing, inshore and offshore, by a small crew.

She features twin rudder steering, exceptional for reaching, with an adjustable toe-in angle to reduce drag when necessary.

The deck is pleasantly laid with teak, showing below-average wear for her age, and the silver caulking gives her a modern twist against the recently painted topsides.

Her deck layout reflects the design brief, with controls easily accessible and simple to operate shorthanded. Push-button winches alleviate the need for a large crew.

Below deck, the environment is reasonably spartan compared to cruising yachts but much more comfortable than your average racing yacht. The small galley and chart table, tastefully finished in Cocobola veneer, contrast well with the clear-coat carbon finish of the worktop and the painted texture of the rest of the yacht. All are beautifully finished, as expected, with the keelbox also featuring a clear-coat carbon finish in the center of the saloon, alongside a comfortable seating area, all with recently refurbished covers.

On the racecourse, her sister ship SPIRIT OF LORINA won her division in both the Rolex Maxi World Cup in Porto Cervo and shortly afterward in the Rolex Middle Sea Race, proving the design’s competitiveness both inshore and offshore.

ARTEMIS is in turnkey condition for the next owner following a comprehensive refit and service in 2020. Maintenance has been meticulously attended to, with EC6 rigging completely stripped and sent back to Future Fibres for testing and recovery. Spars underwent NDT testing and repainting concurrently, and all hydraulics were serviced by Cariboni.

Additionally, she has a separate configuration with the inclusion of cruising kit, lightly used and stored in a container for potential cruising purposes.

The luxury sailing yacht MES AMIS (ex ARTEMIS, SALPERTON III) is a 44m Dubois design, with interior design by Adam Lay Studios. This beautiful yacht was conceived by a very experienced yachtsman, built in New Zealand by Fitzroy Yachts and launched in 2007. She was the winner of the ShowBoats International award at Monaco in 2007. Refitted in 2022.

Combining the innovative design work of Dubois Naval Architects with the workmanship of Fitzroy Yachts, MES AMIS is a performance-orientated luxury yacht. S/Y MES AMIS is currently one of the very finest recent sailing yachts worldwide in her size range.

A beautifully appointed interior is the design work of Adam Lay Studios and includes a full-width owner's suite, three generous guest cabins and three crew cabins. Yacht MES AMIS's luxury interior makes lovely use of Oak and Walnut with Wenge and could be described as “warm, calm contemporary”. Her style of wooden joinery is simple, clean and crisp with a tactile countertop nosing incorporating a practical up-stand and a walnut bead for emphasis. The Walnut cornice gives a crisp emphasis between bulkhead and deckhead. Oak floor perimeters, in wide boards combined with natural cotton carpet in an off-white colour, reflect the light bulkheads and deck heads. Natural fibres maintain the feeling of calm. Leather, bronze, granite, onyx and slumped glass continue the ‘natural’ theme throughout the superyacht.

The yacht’s unique transom opens hydraulically to form either a swim platform or a boarding platform 800mm above water level. The transom can be lowered to 300mm in calm water. Twelve underwater lights have been fitted into the hull.

Another unique design feature is the layout on one level from the cockpit through the saloon and then down a few steps to the dining area, thus creating an expansive area for entertaining. Within the MES AMIS upper saloon, and adjacent to the bar, is the inside steering and navigation station with autopilot and engine controls.

The yacht’s five spreaders Martin Spars 60m main mast and Leisure furl booms are constructed from carbon fibre. Her mainsail and mizzen are fully battened with the Leisure furl in-boom furling and reefing systems. Her hull, deck and superstructure are welded aluminium construction and her fin bulb keel is an elliptical section and is filled with 60 tonnes of lead. There are 5 watertight bulkheads.

She provides duel steering positions with custom-built carbon fibre wheels with sunpads to aft. In the centre of the cockpit is a console carrying the sailing controls and instruments and navigation systems. Forward to the steering position is a dining area and a large sunpad area.

The yacht’s guest accommodation is extremely spacious with a full-width owners’ stateroom with a king-sized bed and en-suite bathroom. She offers wardrobes with ample clothes storage, a separate seating area and state of the art entertainment systems. Guest cabins include VIP double cabins, a twin-bedded cabin both with en-suite bathrooms. A further twin cabin is currently used as a gymnasium, has 2 Pullman berths and a fixed berth, also with en-suite facilities.

C-Tech 2020 Battens 2 300x250

The concept behind Vizual Marine and subsequently the Artemis 20 was to create an even keel within the sailing fraternity that will allow both able and disabled sailors to race against each other with the same rules, the same boats and no unfair advantage to anybody.

Artemis is built with a fiberglass hull and GRP superstructure. Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 16 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 19 knots with a range of up to 4,606 nautical miles from her 39,745 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. Her low draft of 2.19m/7'2" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines.

When not cruising Artemis has onboard an incredible selection of water toys and accessories for you and your guests to connect with the waters around you. Take to the sea on the Jet Skis offering you power and control on the water. In addition there are waterskis that are hugely entertaining whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro. Another excellent feature are two SEABOBs providing agile cruising and diving. If that isn't enough Artemis also features wakeboards, kayaks, fishing equipment, paddleboards and snorkelling equipment. Artemis | 2023 Lagoon 46

sailboat artemis

Artemis has been appointed with 4 double cabins and a single berth, port forward, to accommodate a maximum of nine guests. All double cabins are air conditioned along with the salon. As on all of Lagoon’s new-generation catamarans, the decision to position the mast step further aft, provides the 46 with multiple advantages: - Bringing the mast further aft reduces the length of the boom, increases the mainsail aspect ratio and thus its efficiency. - Centering the masses limits pitching and eases the boat’s motion. - The reduced size of the boom facilitates handling. - The large jib sail is self-tacking, so there is no need to touch anything when tacking! With a forward cockpit offering another view of the horizon. The sun pads are equipped with adjustable backrests and accompanied by a low table to enjoy this space under all circumstances. The cockpit and salon on the 46 has been designed as a true living space and flow into one another seamlessly on the same level. Wide transom platforms allow an ease to boarding from a dock and optimize usability when at anchor or on a mooring. The refined interior is elegantly illuminated and both her forward cabins are identical in size to the aft cabins creating less deliberation between crew mates! Snap up a booking on Artemis quick! We are sure she is going to be a popular yacht within our fleet.

Description

Additional information.

DESCRIPTION

ARTEMIS was designed as a solo cruising sailing canoe and as a paddling canoe for two. Brian Pearson (aka keyhavenpotterer) provided so much input that I name him as a co-developer here. ARTEMIS started as a design for myself, to be used on the Lake of Constance, Switzerland, where wind speed and direction would change a couple of times a day, with calms in between. I made the plans (and kits for european customers) available after building and testing several prototypes on the Baltic and the Med. ARTEMIS is a "50-50“ canoe, as easy to paddle as to sail: "Sail when you can, paddle when you must!“

sailboat artemis

Historic sailing canoes have an impressive number of compelling advantages, features that are just as exciting now as they had been 150 years ago, when the sailing canoe was invented and served as a vector to introduce and promote canoeing and -later- kayaking in Europe.

sailboat artemis

I wanted reasonable form stability under sail, the ability to hoist and lower the rig on the water, storage for mast, sail and boom in the boat, good seakeeping attitude in a swell, a hull wide enough to camp in, with a tarp overhead, a cartop weight of about 55 to 66 lbs, which is light enough to load her on a roof rack without help, and some luggage capacity for a fortnight's cruise with lightweight camping gear, to name a few. Good planing ability, at least when the boat is empty, on a beam or broad reach. Rudder action as easy as holding a pencil. And an ingenious seat, fully adjustable, engineered to paddle and sail the whole day in as much comfort as you would have in a car. Building technique should be simple stitch & glue.

sailboat artemis

Some ARTEMIS builders have owned a couple of boats before, most of them bigger and/or faster, but always much more expensive. Now, the builders are downsizing to something more manageable, less complex: more fun at less cost. They know that -well- a big boat is a big problem, and a small boat is a small problem, and they know that a sailing canoe is among the easiest and most versatile boats you can build and own. Reduced trip preparation time and instantaneous availability translate into more time on the water. It is a fascinating concept: launch her nearly anywhere, just take with you what you really need, and off you are for short excursions of a few hours or cruising up to 2 weeks. I am using ARTEMIS much more often than any other boat I have owned, because she is so easy to use.

sailboat artemis

Cruising in comfort is important, and first of all depends on your seat. The fully adjustable seat is an offspring of Hugh Horton’s very clever seats for his sailing canoes, simplified for easy building. I have used that seat model for about 1,000 km now and there is nothing I would change. ARTEMIS can be sailed from within the cockpit –just reef if the wind pipes up- or hike out on the side deck and have a wild and wet ride.

sailboat artemis

A boat that is going to be paddled efficiently, with either a double-blade or single-blade paddle, is necessarily a boat with low resistance, because human propulsion forces are weak. Add this to the requirement that she should be able to plane, in a good breeze, then you understand that hull form and foils development took some time for trial-and-error, to maximize performance. This is definitely not your average canoe hull shape.

sailboat artemis

The whole interior is completely open. The cockpit is wide and long, for good access to the whole interior, and for sleeping within the boat. I have built two pretty wave bords, to close parts of the cockpit, but other builders have been much smarter and are using tarpaulin dodgers.

sailboat artemis

Several rig/sail options from 44 to 65 sq ft are tested and available:

  • The 5,2 sqm Hugh Horton Bufflehead sail with its carbon rig is of superior quality and efficiency. It is fully battened, so has a perfect shape even in very light wind, can point very high and go fast, and is therefore used for big cruises and regatta sailing
  • The 44 sqft Solway Dory bermudan sail with its aluminium rig is very easy to reef and is the right rig for fast changing conditions and jointly cruises
  • The 5 sqm MacGregor main lugsail with its carbon mast and its woden rig is a good all-round sail with an outstanding price-to-benefit ratio.

Safety is important. With some pool noodles under her side decks and inflatable buoyancy bags in bow and stern, it is easy to recover ARTEMIS from a capsize, get back into the cockpit, bail her out and carry on.

Building ARTEMIS is suitable for a first-time builder. The plans consists of 15 sheets and include a detailed list of materials and a CD with a comprehensive 40-page building key with lots of photos, giving detailed information on each building step, how to join plywood, how to mark the shapes of the panels, and how to use epoxy. Some builders have added outriggers. She is designed to not need them, but will take them with grace.

Essential safety tips for recreational boating

Whether you’re renting a boat with captain or you choose a bareboat, always keep in mind this basic safety guidelines:

  • if you rent a captained charter, always pay close attention to your captain
  • walk slowly and never run onboard as you can easily slip and fall overboard
  • be mindful of stairs and hatches (never step on them)
  • if you go swimming, floating or paddling, stay away from other boats even if they are anchored or moored
  • pay attention to the other group members and make sure that everybody is accounted for at all times

Guidelines to responsible yachting

If you’re looking to explore our beautiful planet, a yacht charter is a great place to start. Explore coral reefs with your snorkel, discover hidden bays and islands and generally enjoy the view of nature. Remember, that sailing motto:  'Take only photos, leave only wake'  (OK, so we paraphrased). To be a responsible sailor, remember:

  • Don’t disturb coral or sealife
  • Take your trash home (and don’t throw anything in the sea)
  • Respect the locals and their customs wherever you go
