  • Commodores Report

Commodores Corner

It’s been a busy time around the club since my last report with the club hosting the RG65 Nationals. The contest was sailed in good spirit with Jeff Byerley winning the event in his Missile design, followed by Mike McLachan in second and Nick Eagleson keeping them both honest all day.

The following weekend a large contingent traveled to Kapiti for the Murray Roundtree which was sailed in some of the best conditions seen all season. Skippers got the opportunity to sail with all three rigs over the two day event. GHYRC came home with a top result taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

I would like to thank the Social Committee for their efforts in organising the Christmas dinner and to all those who attended for an enjoyable night.

The feedback of late has been great with many positive comments about the social environment that the committee has been aiming for while still maintaining a high standard of racing.

At the last committee meeting it was discussed and decided the club needs to create small boat division for people wishing to get involved in the sport of radio yachting. It has been decided to create a multi-class division for all boats under 80 cm’s long. This will provide for people wanting to get into the sport with different options on budget and type of boat .Will allow for the number of different classes in the market place to be sailed and for those who already have smaller boats in the area to join in. The committee has allocated the lake to this group on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 12.30pm and Wednesday afternoons. We envisage the Electrons, Micro Magic’s, RG65’s and Wind Warriors along with some hobby shop boats being able to sail together in a non competitive and social environment, perfect for those who wish to try radio sailing without having to dive straight into the high intensity of the larger classes.

This weekend we have the 6 Hour race which is stacking up to be another great event with plenty of interest being shown including a skipper coming up from Wellington. This year the event has been recognized by the National Body which makes it the first recognized endurance event.

We have a trophy for the first team with a skipper over 70 years of age. This is a category we are adopting for the North Harbour Champs as we feel that sailors who fit into this category should be recognized for their effort and achievements and hope to see other clubs adopt a similar concept.

This years Grand Master’s event will be for sailors over 70 years and opened up to all clubs to attend.

It’s fantastic to be able to report we have purchased a club gazebo funded by Pub Charity along with some club flags to be used at events/regatta’s the club attends.

Cheers Rob Nelson Commodore

  • Auckland Championship 2013

It was a great pleasure to watch the Gulf Harbour Radio Yacht Club enjoy success at the Auckland Champs over the weekend.

Once again Rob Nelson stepped up and sailed his Cheinz in another winning performance.

He dominated the fleet over the two days finishing well clear of the fleet by a margin of 25 points back to second placed Karl Stachel.

Karl finished the regatta one point clear of Graham Cross from the North Shore Club. A great effort by Karl having one of his best results at this level.

Other GHRYC members to mention who had good success were Brett May finishing fourth and Steven Champion sixth overall. Graham Clough sailing in his first IOM championship finished a very creditable seventh.

  • COMMODORES CORNER

The AGM was held on Tuesday the 16 th of July at the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who attended and had their say on the direction they wish to see the club heading in the future.

We all thank the outgoing committee for their work over the past twelve months, and welcome in the new committee.  This year’s executive committee is made up of myself as Commodore and Harry Bowles standing by my side as Vice Commodore.   Chris Grant is continuing on as Treasurer/Secretary .

We have a good mix on the committee with John Senior, Tracey Thomas, Linton Little, Mark Thomas and Peter Jackson representing a range of different aspects of the membership.

Mark will be continuing on looking after the website.  On this note it is important for people to send Mark photo’s, reports or articles to keep the site fresh and up to date. To have a great site requires input from various people around the club, so don’t hesitate to contact Mark if you have something of interest to the members and general sailing community.

John Senior has been recognized for his endless hard work and effort over the years and has been inducted into the club as a life member.

With the Auckland IOM championships just around the corner, activity at the lake has increased over the last few weeks with good numbers sailing during the week and visitors from other clubs coming to line up on Saturdays which is great to see.

We have new sailors joining the club with Gary buying Dave’s Mad Max (NZL 777) and Peter has purchased Steve’s boat (NZL 808).  I would like to welcome them both to the club and ask all our members to give them a warm welcome and offer assistance where possible.  Please remember these guys are learning and need to be given a bit of extra room around the lake. We also have Tom Beale and Nick Eagleson joining the club with their RG65’s. The 65’s sail on Friday and Sunday afternoon’s from 2:30 pm. Anyone interested in these great little boats is welcome to come down and have a look .  The boys will give you a boat to sail for the afternoon and there are a couple of boats available for sale.

On Sunday mornings the Electrons are planning to get back on the lake which will be great to see and once again I’m sure they will give anyone who shows a bit of interest a sail.

Well good luck to all those sailing in the Auckland IOM Championships

Our Heritage

The Gulf Harbour Yacht Club’s beginning goes back to conversations held in 1996 between Harbourmaster Perry Hodell and boating enthusiasts in the newly opened marina.

As a result of these early discussions, an ad hoc committee was established consisting of Lou Fiore, Roland Eisenberg, Art Williams, Gene Custer, and Perry Hodell to form a cruise club to promote cruising on the Gulf Coast. Several planning meetings were held during the summer in the Harbourmaster’s office.

The new cruise club’s first organizational meeting was held in the aerobics room at the Sports and Fitness Center on September 27, 1996, at 6:00 PM. All Gulf Harbour boating enthusiasts were invited to this meeting. (Note: the clubhouse was not yet completed.) During the remainder of that year into 1997, much work was done organizing the club, writing the by-laws, planning cruises, and holding social functions.

Major contributors to those early efforts included Lou Fiore, Roland Eisenberg, Art Williams, Harry Randall, Tom Simon, Phil and Anne Kniskern, Bob and Mary Stream, Rich and Joan Tringa, Al and Joan May, Gary Langberg, and Gene Custer.

In November 1997, the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club’s first annual meeting was held in the clubhouse. Elected as flag officers were Phil Kniskern, Commodore; Harry Randall, Vice Commodore; Roland Eisenberg, Rear Commodore; Vic Pfeiffer, Fleet Captain. Board members were Tom Simon, Treasurer; Gerry Langberg, Secretary. Directors were Joan Tringa, Gene Custer, and Al DeGenova. The club’s objectives were agreed as follows: to promote the enjoyment of fellowship and boating safety, sponsor cruises, and coordinate social activities for its members.

From the first organizational meeting in September 1996, to the current membership of nearly 300 individual members, the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club has prospered in the spirit of working together toward common goals.
