NORTH STAR is a custom motor yacht launched in 2019 by Sunrise Yachts, in Turkey and most recently refitted in 2021.

Sunrise Yachts was created in 2006 with a very specific strategy born from a strong and simple vision: to offer original bespoke solutions to their clients, tailored to their needs and wishes, in an industry that it too often set in ways of the past. Owning a luxury yacht is above all an emotional and cultural affair that needs to be entrusted to a team of competent, dedicated and passionate individuals that will ensure that satisfaction in all aspects is achieved.

NORTH STAR measures 63.1 metres in length, with a max draft of 3.5 feet and a beam of 11.5 feet. She has a gross tonnage of 1,410 tonnes.

For over twenty-five years Espen Oeino International has been hard at work designing custom motor yachts for an international clientele from Japan in the East to Seattle in the West.

Her interior design is by RWD .

63.10m/207ft superyacht NORTH STAR is the sistership to IRIMARI and was built by Sunrise Yachts in 2019. She features the naval architecture of Ozgun Yacht Design and the interior styling of Redman Whiteley Dixon, who created sensational silvery white recreational spaces with a variety of textures and dark furnishings to draw the eye and act as accents. The exteriors are just as tempting and treat guests to an abundance of outdoor lounges and sunbathing spaces, with glass balustrades and cut-out gunwales to ensure uninterrupted views of the surroundings. The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 12 guests across six beautifully furnished en-suite cabins, with a crew of 16 for a fantastic and memorable journey.

The lower deck swim platform connects to the spacious beach club, where there are two sofas and a coffee table for relaxing in the shade after sunbathing beside the water. A starboard staircase leads to the main deck aft, where a C-shaped sofa lines the stern and a coffee table and aft-facing sofa create an ideal space for breakfast or drinks at sundown.

A staircase leads to the upper deck, where the aft is designed for resting in the sunshine with a port and starboard C-shaped sofa and drinks table facing each other. Under the shade of the sundeck overhang there is a grand alfresco dining table to seat up to 14 guests. The foredeck is used to store more tenders and water toys, with a Davit crane for easy launch and retrieval.

On the sundeck, the forward section has a wet bar to port, a C-shaped sofa to starboard and a massive Jacuzzi forward for the whole group to unwind and chat together. The aft sundeck area is filled with sun lounges down both sides and two circular sofa/sunbeds are placed along the stern.

The top deck offers guests one final space on board to observe the surroundings and enjoy a quiet moment while seated or napping on the sofa/sunbeds on both sides of the communications mast.

The lower deck has a spacious beach club, forward of which is a tender garage with side-loading hatch to port and a gym/massage room with fold-down terrace to starboard. The engine room is forward of the gym followed by the majority of the guest accommodation amidships and the crew accommodation and facilities forward.

On the main deck, the Master suite is placed forward with the VIP stateroom to port of the Master office. The main foyer is amidships to starboard with the galley and crew corridor to port leading through to the formal dining area, where up to 14 guests can enjoy a lavish meal in glamorous modern surroundings. The salon to the aft enjoys plenty of sunshine through the glass sliding doors, and the arrangement places three sofas and two armchairs around a large square coffee table.

On the upper deck, the bridge has a sofa on both sides of the Captain's chair, allowing the room to be used as a den while at anchor. Behind is the Captain's cabin, then two salons are located in the aft section: The first salon is a cost space furnished with a corner sofa. It can be used as a cinema or a spare den. The sizeable aft salon is designed for hosting parties and other large social gatherings, and provides a wet bar to port, a seating area in the centre with a sofa, armchairs and a coffee table, a desk and chair to starboard where guests can rest with reading material and take in the views, a games table behind and a port aft seating area with a coffee table between two plush sofas with armchairs and drinks tables to complete the setting.

NORTH STAR Specifications

On the sundeck, the central section can be completely closed or opened either end to connect with the rest of the sundeck and create a more alfresco living environment. Within, there is a symmetrical setting placing an L-shaped sofa into both forward corners, joined by two chairs and a coffee table to create a relaxing environment with incredible views. The aft interior has a day head to port, a staircase to starboard and a dining table for up to 12 guests.

Twin MTU 12V4000 M63 engines produce a top speed of 16 knots, a cruising speed of 12 knots and a range of 4,500 nautical miles.

Yacht Accommodation

The accommodation sleeps a maximum of 12 guests across 6 en-suite cabins: 1 Master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins, both with a Pullman berth. ~ The Master suite is placed on the main deck forward and is accessed via a private office off the main foyer. The full-beam bedroom is furnished with a king-sized bed, a seating area to starboard and a dressing table to port. Both sides have a walk-in wardrobe followed by entrances into the en-suite bathroom, where there is a sink, a toilet and bidet, and a shared central shower. ~ The VIP stateroom is located behind the Master suite and also has a king size bed, desk sofa, two closets and an en-suite bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower. ~ On the lower deck, the double cabins are positioned to port and starboard aft of the foyer with a sliding door between them that can be opened to create one large cabin. Both cabins have an armchair and dressing table with a chair, in addition to two closets and an en-suite bathroom with a toilet and sink. One bathroom has a shower, while the other bathroom has a bathtub and walk-in shower. ~ The twin cabins are placed to port and starboard of the foyer and have a Pullman berth in addition to the beds, a dressing table and a chair. Both en-suite bathrooms have a toilet, bidet, sink and shower. ~ The crew of 16 is accommodated on the lower deck forward, where there is also a mess and laundry facilities.

A sister ship to Irimari superyacht , North Star is a high-volume 63 metre superyacht which offers her charter guests the perfect mix of interior luxury and spectacular deck spaces, epitomised by the wonderful indoor-outdoor sundeck which seamlessly combines the two.

In all there are in fact more than 685m2 of exterior deck spaces, an area larger than most 70 metre motor yachts. On the inside of North Star yacht, the bridge deck salon is very large with yet another full bar, two lounging areas and a smaller dining table, ideal for pre-dinner drinks. The bridge deck also has a den forward with a large TV, perfect for playing computer games or watching a movie.

The sundeck on North Star features a 4m long glass-fronted Jacuzzi pool forward with crew members able to be on-hand in the full bar to bring you countless refreshments. It also offers an interior saloon located centrally for a less formal dining option for up to 12 guests, ideal for staying out of the midday sun while still being on the sun deck.

North Star's crew of 16 have been selected for their charter experience, and are led by experienced charter Captain Paul Bell.

Other features include a large swimming platform and beach club, a fully equipped gym as well as a tender and toy garage. She also features two jet skis, two seabobs, a Chris Craft guest tender and all the inflatable and towable toys you would expect on a yacht of this size.

Scientists collect high-resolution images of the North Star's surface for 1st time

The North Star's surface is surprisingly spotty, new high-definition observations of Polaris reveal.

In our solar system , scattered across one of Earth's verdant mountains, six eggshell-white telescopes gaze into the deep universe. As one cohesive hive, the domed structures collect cosmic light to guide modern astronomers exploring space — and it is thanks to this hive that we now have a brilliant new perspective on the light that guided astronomers of the past: the North Star.

Our visual knowledge of the current North Star (because of Earth's axial wobble, the title passes to different stars over the eons) runs deep. Artists, old and new, have depicted Polaris shining in their paintings, astrophotographers have imaged it from their backyards and scientists have pointed their instruments at it for decades. But what's special about these new Polaris views, courtesy of the CHARA Array on Mount Wilson in California, has to do with resolution. The special thing about CHARA is, as touched on, its telescopes work in tandem with one another. Their light data is combined in a central facility to provide one whole, clear picture of a source. It's as though the sextet of worker telescopes forms one ultimate telescope with a diameter of 330 meters (1,083 feet). And because of this, the project's image resolution — specifically, angular resolution — is excellent.

Sure enough, after checking out some of these Polaris images, put together with CHARA observations taken between 2016 and 2021, scientists found some previously unknown features of the star. Most notably, there are discernable spots on the star's surface, kind of like the sunspots we see on the sun every now and then.

"The CHARA images revealed large bright and dark spots on the surface of Polaris that changed over time," Gail Schaefer, director of the CHARA Array, said in a statement .

One of the major reasons this finding came as a surprise has to do with the fact that Polaris isn't any old star. It's a sort of star known as a Cepheid variable, which means it brightens and dims periodically. Polaris in particular gets brighter and fainter according to a four-day cycle, and scientists love locating Cepheids due to such very predictable behavior. That's because it allows these stars to be used for cosmic distance measurements. Basically, watching the change in a Cepheid's brightness over one cycle can reveal its true brightness.

By contrast, without predictably periodic pulsations, a star wouldn't be very reliable for such measurements. At risk of simplification, a dim star, for instance, could be either far away or just small — or, it could be weirdly dim for some other reason. Or, it could just happen to be dim during the time at which it was observed.

Returning to those spots, as the CHARA team says, these high-resolution images of Polaris mark the first "glimpse of what the surface of a Cepheid variable looks like." So, to find spots with that first glimpse was intriguing. But these spots weren't the only result of the team's analysis.

Unlike our lonely sun, Polaris doesn't roam the universe by itself. Boasting about 46 times the size of our host star and lying over 400 light-years away from us, it's part of a triple-star system. It just happens to be the brightest of its siblings. In fact, the original goal of CHARA's Polaris investigation was to map the orbit of the star that circles our North Star once every 30 years. It's the one that's way closer than the other, making the endeavor a complex feat. Not only does this star float very close to Polaris, but the companion is also incredibly faint. It wasn't even confirmed to exist until around 2005, owing its documentation to the Hubble Space Telescope .

"The small separation and large contrast in brightness between the two stars makes it extremely challenging to resolve the binary system during their closest approach," team lead Nancy Evans at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian, who also helped with the companion's identification, said in the statement. For that reason, the team dipped into some other astronomy tool boxes as well, such as a speckle interferometer at the Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.

This mission was indeed a success, helping to confirm things like the size of Polaris and suggesting that the star may be about five times more massive than the sun — which is heavier than previously thought. That discovery is important in its own right because, as Evans told ScienceNews , only a few Cepheids have had their masses determined. It also poses some interesting questions to explore in the future. "The mass combined with the distance shows that the Cepheid is more luminous than predicted for this mass from evolutionary tracks," the study authors write, for instance.

Still, the North Star's spotty nature seems to have taken the limelight. Consider how the areas of the star on which spots are seen and the rate at which the star rotates appear to suggest a 120-day radial velocity variation — essentially referring to changes in the object's velocity as seen along an observer's line of sight. That poses yet another puzzle.

"We plan to continue imaging Polaris in the future," John Monnier, an astronomy professor at the University of Michigan and co-author of the study, said in the statement. "We hope to better understand the mechanism that generates the spots on the surface of Polaris."

The study was published on Aug. 20 in The Astrophysical Journal.

North Korea’s Kim attends test-firing of rocket launcher

SEOUL >> North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the test of an upgraded 240mm rocket launcher system, state media said on Wednesday.

The system “proved its superiority in mobility and strike concentration” during the inspection testing, state news agency KCNA said.

Earlier this week, Kim oversaw tests of new “suicide drones,” and urged researchers to develop artificial intelligence for the unmanned vehicles.

U.S. and South Korean officials have accused North Korea of supplying Russia with artillery shells, missiles and other equipment in recent months for Moscow to use in its war on Ukraine.

From last year until Aug. 4, North Korea has shipped more than 12,000 containers to Russia, sending three or four kinds of shells of different sizes including rockets, and separately also supplied dozens of short range missiles, South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik told Reuters this month.

Moscow and Pyongyang have denied accusations of arms transfers but have vowed to deepen military relations.

A Russian delegation led by the vice minister of industry held talks with North Korean counterparts on Tuesday to further develop economic cooperation between the two countries, according to KCNA.

Police divers have resumed searching for six people believed trapped in the hull of a superyacht that sank in a storm off Sicily, including a British tech magnate recently acquitted of fraud charges, his lawyer and a key defence witness at trial.

The resting place of the luxury sailboat, off Porticello, is 50 metres under water - a depth that requires special precautions: rescue crews said they were working in 12-minute shifts, a measure that slowed down their work to reach the cramped inside of the wreck.

The Bayesian, a 56m British-flagged luxury yacht, was moored about a kilometre off Ponticello when a storm rolled in before 4am on Monday.

Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water.

Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived, including a mother who reported holding her one-year-old baby over the waves to save her.

One body has been recovered, identified by officials as the on-board chef.

Fire rescue officials have said the other six on board will be considered missing until they are found in the wreckage. 

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, which rescued the survivors who managed to get into a lifeboat, said he was close enough to be able to see the Bayesian as the weather came in but found it had disappeared after the storm cleared.

"They said they went flat on the water and were sunk in two minutes," Borner said, quoting the survivors.

The rotating search teams, each made up of two specialised cave divers, worked on Tuesday to open up access points to get inside the wreck, which lies at a depth far beyond what most recreational divers are certified to reach. 

The divers have not yet been able to access the below-deck cabins because they were blocked by furniture that had shifted during the violent storm.

Rescue crews assume the missing six are in those cabins because the storm struck when most would be sleeping. 

Luca Cari, a spokesman for the rescue teams, said the search was proceeding much more slowly than another big shipwreck in Italy, the 2012 Costa Concordia cruise ship that flipped on its side off Tuscany's coast, because of the depth of the wreck and the space divers have to manoeuvre.

 Among those missing was Mike Lynch, who was once hailed as Britain's king of technology. He was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges in a US federal trial related to Hewlett Packard's $US11 billion ($A16 billion) takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

His wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

The sailing holiday appeared to be something of a celebration after Lynch's acquittal. 

Some of the people who stood by Lynch throughout the ordeal were on board, including one of Lynch's US lawyers, Christopher Morvillo, and Morvillo's wife. 

Both are also unaccounted for, according to the civil protection agency.

Also missing was Jonathan Bloomer, a chairman at Morgan Stanley International and the former head of the Autonomy audit committee who testified in Lynch's defense, and his wife.

Charlotte Golunski, who survived the disaster, said she momentarily lost hold of her one-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. 

The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew. 

According to online charter companies, it has been available for charter for 195,000 euros (A320,000) a week and is notable for its massive 75m aluminium mast, one of the tallest in the world.

The 37.95m/124'6" motor yacht 'North Star' was built by Sanlorenzo in Italy at their Viareggio shipyard. Her interior is styled by American designer design house Marty Lowe and she was completed in 2016. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Francesco Paszkowski Design and she was last refitted in 2023.

Guest Accommodation

North Star has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 6 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Her features include deck jacuzzi, WiFi and air conditioning.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (C-32) 1,622hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots with a range of up to 3,000 nautical miles from her 9,034 gallon fuel tanks at 12 knots. Her water tanks store around 1,320 Gallons of fresh water. She was built to RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) C ✠ HULL ● MACH classification society rules.
