Portland is Maine's second largest cruise port - following Bar Harbor . This port city is located on a peninsula (Maine USA's east coast) and north of Boston MA . On the West Coast USA is the namesake Portland Oregon .
Portland ME features historical and architectural attractions, and is also a major commercial, shipping and fishing centre. The port is a gateway to the resort islands in Casco Bay. There's a historic trail and lighthouse in the town. The nearby Kennebunkport is also worth visiting. Its art colony and Seashore Trolley Museum display more than 200 authentic streetcars.
Established in 1632, the town was destroyed in 1676 by Indians, and again in 1690 by Indians and the French. The settlement (then part of Falmouth) was damaged by the British in 1775. In 1786, after being separated from Falmouth, it was named after Portland England .
In 2015, the visiting around 55,000 cruise tourists had an economic impact of USD 5,8 million. In 2016, the cruise port handled 70 ship calls. In August 2016, the port had its ever largest cruise ship docked - RCI' s Anthem of the Seas , bringing to the city 4974 passengers and 1480 crew. Cruising season 2016's economic impact was USD 11 million.
In 2017, the port reported a record year as the number of visiting cruise passengers for the first time ever exceeded 100,000. Port's statistics showed a 6% increase in passenger volumes and a 10% increase in crew numbers over 2016. In 2018, the port handled total 32 ship calls (23% over 2017) and around 39,000 passengers. For season 2019 were booked 40 berths.
On March 16, 2018, was announced a plan to fund the USD 2 million ferry terminal's upgrade project. The Ocean Gateway terminal serves all ferries connecting Maine USA with Nova Scotia (NS Canada). The primary funding party will be the Canadian company Bay Ferries Ltd (headquartered in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island ), which together with the NS government would pay for most of the upgrades. The decision was made after the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency threatened to close the terminal's customs service as it didn't meet USA's federal standards. Bay Ferries is a subsidiary of Northumberland Ferries Ltd (parent NFL Holdings Ltd) and is subsidized by the NS taxpayers.
Cruise ships in Portland ME dock at Portland Ocean Terminal. Following the berth extension and dredging project (completed in April 2017), now the port can dock ships with LOA length 340 m (1115 ft) and max draft 11 m (36 ft). Port's total berthing space is around 2000 m (6560 ft).
The city is linked by ferries with Nova Scotia. In November 2017, the ferry service from Ocean Gateway terminal was terminated after US Customs required a terminal renovation (around USD 7 million in upgrades) in order the passenger facility to meet federal standards. The ferry service Maine - Nova Scotia will start again only if Portland provides USD 2 million for the project.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A $400 million gigayacht floating in the Portland Harbor is turning heads.
According to the Press Herald, a yacht is typically at least 30 feet long, a superyacht is 80-100 feet long, a megayacht is 200 feet, and a gigayacht is over 300 feet long.
The yacht, named Rising Sun, is owned by billionaire entertainment mogul David Geffen, according to CBS News.
CBS News reports the boat's original owner, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, sold Rising Sun to Geffen in 2010.
The Rising Sun reportedly has 82 rooms, including a gym, a basketball court, a wine cellar, a spa, and a movie theater, according to CBS News.
It can reportedly accommodate up to 16 guests and 45 crew members.
Geffen’s gigayacht is the 20th largest in the world, according to the Press Herald.
It’s certainly an eye-catcher at five stories high and 453 feet long.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The largest single-mast sailing yacht ever built is now docked in Portland, towering over the other boats.
The M5 measures about 277-feet-long (84 meters) and has a mast extending 54 feet (16 meters). The Portland Press Herald reports the massive watercraft arrived Monday from Newport, Rhode Island.
“Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors” Publisher John Hanson says the people who own yachts like the M5 “have large egos and it takes a very large yacht to carry them.”
The M5 was originally commissioned by Avis CEO Joseph Vittoria.
The vessel has a master bedroom suite on its main deck and six cabins that sleep up to 12 people. Running the boat requires a crew of more than a dozen.

The largest single-masted sailing yacht ever built is docked in Portland Harbor and towering over DiMillo’s Marina in the Old Port.
Called the M5 and measuring about 277 feet long with a beam 54 feet, the massive pleasure craft arrived Monday, a DiMillo’s employee said.
Where it’s headed or who’s aboard has not been publicly disclosed, but according to MarineTraffic.com, the vessel sailed to Maine from Newport, Rhode Island.
But one thing is for sure – the owner is likely wealthier than your wildest dreams.
“The guys who have the money and the wherewithal to do this have large egos and it takes a very large yacht to carry them,” said John Hanson, publisher of Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors magazine. Advertisement
Hanson said the original owners of boats this size are typically open and public about it, while those who buy them “used” tend to be more discreet. “The first owner builds it as a way to show how big and powerful he is,” Hanson said.
In this case, the M5 was commissioned by Joseph Vittoria, the former chairman and CEO of Avis rental car company. It was completed at a British shipyard and launched in 2004 under the name Mirabella V, but was renamed in 2012 after the boat changed owners.
The original price was not reported at the time it was launched, but was later estimated to be $50 million by people in the maritime industry.
Vittoria reportedly sold the sloop in 2011 for $25 million, according to Fortune magazine and other sources. The buyer was Rod Lewis, a billionaire Texas oil-and-gas tycoon.
The vessel has a master bedroom suite on its main deck and six cabins that sleep up to 12 people. Running the boat requires a crew of more than a dozen, according to a 2010 Greenwich Time story .
And if mooring it isn’t possible, there is a smaller yacht stored inside the hull that can be launched to ferry passengers and visitors back and forth to shore from an anchorage. Advertisement
If water travel isn’t appealing, there is even space to park a small sea plane on the stern, thanks to a retrofit that extended the M5’s overall length.
Hanson said that many boats this size are often chartered, and at great cost.
As of 2005, the yacht’s charter rate per week was about $420,000, and if it was rented 14 weeks a year, the rental revenue of about $5.9 million would equal its annual operating costs, the Greenwich newspaper reported. Whether those figures still hold true is unknown.
While larger sailing yachts with more masts have been constructed, M5 still ranks as the largest of the single-mast variety, according to BoatInternational.com, a clearinghouse for news and advertisements for yacht sales, rankings and charters and other expensive maritime hobbies. The Greenwich paper reported that the mast is nearly 290 feet tall, nearly the height of the Statue of Liberty and too tall to fit under the Golden Gate Bridge, according to Forbes.
Hanson said Maine is a popular destination this time of year for wealthy, seafaring travelers.
“There’s no place better to have your boat in August than the coast of Maine. Seriously,” he said. “Maine is the most awesome cruising grounds in the world. And that’s why they’re here. You can explore the coast of Maine in a 24-footer you get on Craigslist, and have the same experience. Well, not quite the same experience. You might be drinking out of a beer can. But the view is the same.”

As more and more people flock to Maine for a visit, Portland Harbor starts to see more and more of those visitors arrive by private boat. One of those boats has been docked in Portland Harbor over the past week and this particular boat stands out in the harbor more than any other.
Nicholas LaRiviere of Firefly Media Inc. shared photos with us that he took with his drone flying over Portland Harbor. Down below is a massive yacht that dwarfs all the others, that according to GoLocalProv.com is named the Veva, and it was docked in Newport, Rhode Island before coming up to Portland.
The $175 million mega yacht is sitting at the east end of Portland Harbor and is reportedly owned by billionaire Frank Fertitta who also owns Station Casinos in Las Vegas and is the founder of the company that owns the UFC. For those who aren't familiar, that's Ultimate Fight Championship, a mixed martial arts company that broadcasts events regularly on streaming and pay-per-view service.
Super Yacht Fan lists the Veva as 94 meters in length, able to host up to 14 guests and a crew of 18. Oh, and it also has a helicopter and a landing pad. No need to take a small boat into the city as long as you can find a place to touchdown.
Nicholas was kind enough to send us seven photos he took during his drone flight over Portland Harbor as it passed by the mega yacht, giving you an idea of just how big this thing is and how cool it looks with the city of Portland behind it.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.
Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.
The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.
Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.
Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:
Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.
Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).
Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.
Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.
Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.
Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.
Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.
Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .
Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.
Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).
The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.
The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.
Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.
Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.
When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Jeremy Beal, a boat builder and lobsterman, had a simple strategy: “Point it and punch it!” His 14-year-old daughter took it from there.
By Steven Kurutz
Reporting from Long Island, Maine.
Dozens of boats zipped across Casco Bay during the Maine Lobster Boat Races on Saturday. Only one had a purple bottom.
That boat, a 32-footer with a powerful diesel engine, belonged to Jeremy Beal, 45, a large, soft-spoken man who comes from a long line of boat builders and lobstermen.
“See, I grew up right in it,” he said between drags of a cigarette while leaning against the rail of his boat on the evening before the big race.
For decades, Mr. Beal’s father, Wayne Beal, and an uncle, Calvin Beal, have built boats used by commercial fishers up and down the Maine coast. After years spent learning the family trade, Jeremy took over his dad’s business, Wayne Beal’s Boat Shop, in Jonesport, a seaside town more than 200 miles northeast of Portland.
“I bought the boat off my father,” Mr. Beal said. “It was his last power boat. He’s retired out of the boat shop. I won’t sell the boat unless I have to. Just for the fact that it was my dad’s.”
To pay off the boat, Mr. Beal has returned part-time to lobster fishing, something he first started doing at age 6. This summer he has been helped by his 14-year-old daughter, Mariena Beal, who will enter ninth grade at Jonesport-Beals High School next month.
Together, father and daughter have been dropping 250 traps into the Gulf of Maine to catch thousands of the large lobsters prized around the world for their meat. They split whatever money is left after paying for the bait (herring, mostly), fuel and the monthly boat bill.
Mr. Beal said he hoped the experience would teach his daughter both financial responsibility and the family’s way of life on the water. But Mariena didn’t quite get her way when it came to the color of the boat.
“She wanted a pink bottom, but I wouldn’t let that fly,” he said.
The pair hit on purple as a compromise. And Mariena got to name the boat — My Turn, she called it.
When they are not hauling up traps, Mr. Beal and his daughter have been competing on the lobster boat racing circuit, an annual series of summertime competitions along the Maine coast. The events, run by the Maine Lobster Boat Racing Association, are essentially drag races — the fastest boat wins.
“I’ve always been a competitor,” Mr. Beal said.
He summarized his racing strategy: “Point it and punch it!”
Two days before the recent race, Mr. Beal unloaded the buckets of herring he keeps on deck. He lugged out the lobster crates and the 55-gallon plastic drums that store the catch. Finally, he took a scrub brush and washed down the deck with Dawn dish soap.
On Friday morning, after waking early and packing sandwiches for lunch, Mr. Beal charted a scenic southwesterly course from Jonesport. Alone on deck, he took in the sight of the rocky coastline and marine life, including porpoises. His wife and daughters, including Mariena, drove the 200 miles separately in a car.
It took Mr. Beal just under five hours to sail to Long Island, one of Maine’s Casco Bay islands that lie a few miles from Portland. Many of its 230 residents work on boats or own one.
A crowd had gathered for a cookout at the old boathouse on Wharf Street when Mr. Beal moored his vessel. Men and women were eating hamburgers, drinking beer and lining up to buy race merchandise from Lisa Kimball, an islander who co-chairs the race. The proceeds were going toward a scholarship fund for children on the island.
Mr. Beal made the rounds. Several of the partygoers had bought their boats from him or his father. The price of lobsters was solid this year, everyone agreed, though the catch varied from “good” to “horrible,” depending on who you asked.
Adam Kimball, Ms. Kimball’s husband, planned to race the next day. He works on an oil tanker in Alaska, but you don’t need a commercial fishing license to compete — so long as you have a typical lobster boat, which he does.
“It’s a lot of money to spend for not a lot of return,” Mr. Kimball, 46, said with a laugh.
He was referring to the modest prize money, usually a few hundred dollars, and to the way some boat owners invest thousands to gain horsepower and perhaps a knot or two in speed.
“They call it ‘gooning up’ the engine,” Mr. Kimball said. “There are some risks to that. Like you blow it up.”
Mr. Beal spotted one of the modern legends of the lobster boat racing.
“Stevie Johnson,” he said. “Now there’s a real character.”
Mr. Johnson, the proprietor of Johnson’s Boatyard on Long Island, is known for building unusual boats , some with automobiles mounted on the hulls. One of them, the “Vette-Boat,” features a 1984 Corvette on a 28-foot hull. Mr. Johnson has won his share of races on his tricked-out vessels over the years, but their main purpose is “to cause a scene,” he likes to say.
Dressed in a blue Hawaiian-print shirt, blue board shorts and Crocs, and nursing Canadian Club whiskey and ginger ale in a red plastic cup, Mr. Johnson, who is in his 70s, was trailed by a small entourage at the cookout.
It was getting late. Mr. Beal untied his boat and sailed over to Portland, where a friend was letting him dock while in town.
Mariena had missed the cookout — she was at the Maine Mall, the largest shopping plaza in the state, doing some back-to-school shopping with her mother. The next day, she would be at the wheel of My Turn.
“She’s like me,” Mr. Beal said. “She likes to go fast.”
She also likes to shop. Mariena and her family members missed the noonish start time of the races on Saturday because they had gotten stuck in traffic after spending the morning back at the mall.
Mr. Beal stood at the wheel of My Turn, engine idling, listening to an announcer call the first few races over a marine radio.
At quarter to one, Mariena came bounding down the dock and onto the boat. She wore black shorts, a white North Face long-sleeved top and leather sandals. Her toenails were painted purple, matching the color of her nose ring and the bottom of My Turn.
Like her father, Mariena was reserved. Asked what she liked about racing lobster boats, she replied, “Everything.”
She was joined on the boat by her mother, Maria Beal; her boyfriend, Caleb Geel; her older sister, Caitlin Childers; and Caitlin’s boyfriend, Nick Guptill.
Mr. Beal gunned the throttle and sped toward Long Island. By now, dozens of pleasure crafts and lobster boats were on the water. A crowd of spectators stood at the ferry dock.
Mr. Beal pulled up to the large boat where officials kept watch over the day’s races through binoculars. His passengers disembarked, leaving My Turn for the so-called committee boat.
Then Mr. Beal and Mariena motored toward the starting line, which was nearly a mile north. Once they were among the other boats in their race category — the G classification race, for boats from 28 to 35 feet in length with diesel engines — Mariena took the wheel.
The committee boat was like a floating party, with coolers of food and drinks. Jon Johansen, the bearded president of Maine Lobster Racing, and the publisher of Maine Coastal News , which covers the races, used a telephoto lens to call out the action.
On board, Maria Beal told a story.
Well into the time she was pregnant with Mariena, she said, she had done a lot of lobstering with her husband. That meant hauling up heavy traps to the point that she ruptured her placenta. The doctors thought she would lose the baby.
”But I went to bed for two weeks and it healed up,” Maria said. “And that’s why we named her Mariena — it means ‘lover of the sea.’”
It was now time for the G classification race.
The lead boat was a speck on the water. As it came closer, you could make out its purple bottom leaving a white-capped wake and all the other boats behind it.
Mariena had won, easily. The Beal contingent whooped and cheered.
“She doesn’t have much fear,” her mother said. “Never has. She’s been looking for speed since she was born.”
My Turn sidled up to the committee boat. Amy Tierney, a race co-chair, handed over an envelope of prize money. Mariena was $200 richer.
What did she plan to do with her winnings?
She smiled.

Nothing says summer quite like a lobster roll on a seaside dock, the sound of seagulls cawing overhead.
However, an authentic Maine lobster roll doesn't come cheap.
On a recent trip to Portland, Maine , I set out to find the absolute best lobster roll around. Most of them were at least $30 — a price that may be too steep for some of the millions of tourists who venture to Maine's coastline each year to indulge in regularly throughout the summer.
So if you're only going to try one, you'll want to know which one is the absolute best.
I tried lobster rolls from five of Portland's most famous spots and ranked them. All except one were traditional Maine-style rolls , which meant they were served cold and with mayonnaise. The other most popular style of lobster roll is Connecticut, which comes warm with melted butter.
Here's how the lobster rolls ranked based on price, taste, and atmosphere.
Highroller may have started out as a simple hot-dog cart, but it has since grown into an institution in the heart of Portland. In its Best of 2024 Awards, Portland Old Port named Highroller Lobster Co. the best lobster roll in the city, making it a must-try spot on my list.
Located on Exchange Street, the building's exterior beckoned me with its can't-miss red branding and playful sidewalk sign.
In addition to indoor and outdoor dining, guests can also order takeout or grab some merch at the restaurant's adjoining gift shop, which I thought was unique and geared toward Portland's many tourists.
The restaurant had an ordering stand where you could place orders with an employee, as well as QR codes on every table that allowed you to place orders online and have them delivered to your table.
The design style of the dining room reminded me of a '50s diner, with a modern twist thanks to the black wood floors and glittering disco ball overhead. It was a warm day, so I decided to sit out on the back patio to eat my lunch.
The Highroller Lobster Co. was unique in that practically every element of the lobster roll was customizable, from the amount of lobster meat to different flavors of mayonnaise and other sauces, such as mango habanero mayo, garlic mayo, and lobster ghee.
However, for the sake of this ranking, I decided to keep it classic.
I ordered the four-ounce lobster roll with regular mayonnaise. The lobster roll cost $30, excluding tax and tip. I also ordered a side of fries for an extra $5 and a soda for $3.
While I do like mayonnaise, and don't really have a preference when it comes to Maine-style versus Connecticut-style lobster rolls, I thought there was just a touch too much mayonnaise on this roll.
It also veered on the thick-and-gloopy side, rather than simply dressing the lobster meat.
I thought the mayonnaise covered up a lot of the flavor of the lobster meat itself, which was a shame considering the meat was juicy and thick. However, the toasted bun had a delightful crispiness to it and held the roll together perfectly.
Overall, it was a solid lobster roll, just not quite my favorite.
While I wasn't ranking the fries, they were perfectly seasoned and crispy. They were, without a doubt, my favorite of all the sides I tried throughout this ranking.
Portland Lobster Company was also nominated this year by Portland Old Port for the best lobster roll category. It has won multiple "Best in Portland" awards in the past, including best lobster roll and best place to take out-of-towners.
Centrally located to many of Portland's biggest attractions, from dockside dining to boat tours, the restaurant was right on the water.
I could imagine this was a very popular spot for tourists to grab lunch since it was right on the pier on one of the busiest streets in the city.
A live band was playing on the outdoor deck. By far, this spot had the most classic New England atmosphere, from the casual seating to the ordering counter and tables overlooking the Portland pier.
The menu said the lobster roll was made with meat from a one-pound lobster brushed with sweet butter. The lobster meat came on a classic roll with lettuce, lemon wedges, and fries on the side.
It was labeled on the menu as market price, but I got it for $27.99, excluding tax.
No other ingredients, like the mayonnaise in the last roll, were competing with the lobster to be the star of the show. I liked the warm butter, which coated the bun and enhanced its flavor.
However, while the lobster meat did have a nice flavor, I thought the texture was just a touch on the rubbery side.
This lobster roll was a good, classic sandwich I could see myself getting again the next time I'm in Portland. It hit many of the marks, especially when it came to price and the restaurant's ambiance.
However, there wasn't anything especially unique about this lobster roll. While Highroller wasn't my favorite either, I at least appreciated that they were taking some risks with their flavor offerings. At Portland Lobster Company, there was only one way to order this roll — and it wasn't even served in the classic Maine style with mayonnaise.
To me, the best part of choosing this spot was the location. From the convenience of being located right downtown to the waterside seating and seagulls cawing overhead, I couldn't imagine a better spot to grab a lobster roll in the summer.
Named by Food & Wine as offering the best sandwich in Maine, Bite Into Maine has multiple locations in the area, including a food truck near Portland Head Light, the oldest lighthouse in Maine, in Cape Elizabeth.
We stopped by the location in Munjoy Hill, the restaurant's only brick-and-mortar location.
The restaurant looked like a shipping container and was located next to other businesses. The overall vibe of this part of town felt industrial, rather than the historic, classic New England feel I got downtown.
I ordered at the counter and waited at a nearby table for my name to be called. The restaurant was bright and clean.
However, I admittedly missed some of that classic seaside feel I got at Portland Lobster Company and the other locations. I could have been anywhere in the country, from Ohio to Maine, inside this restaurant.
I ordered the 6-ounce Maine lobster roll for $37.95, plus tax, making it the most expensive roll I tried.
Even though the Maine-style roll is served with mayonnaise, all the buns at Bite Into Maine are butter-grilled, which I thought gave me the best of both worlds.
It came topped with green onion, which made the lobster roll beautiful to look at. The lobster meat was perfectly dressed with mayonnaise — it was light and fresh and enhanced the flavor rather than detracting from it.
I thought the extra-large size was definitely enough to feed two people.
I had no complaints about the lobster roll and thought the price was worth the amount of meat it contained.
However, I couldn't get over the fast-food feel of the restaurant — but I know this was just my personal preference and opinion. When I'm in Maine eating a lobster roll, I want to really feel that vibe.
The next time I come back to Maine, I'll stop by one of the chain's food trucks, especially the one near Portland Head Light. I think that would dramatically improve my experience, and could even take this lobster roll all the way to the top of my ranking.
Cousins Maine Lobster is one of the most recognizable lobster brands in the country, with more than 50 locations across 26 states. The only Maine location is a food truck located in Fort Williams State Park, a popular site for Portland visitors and the location of the oldest lighthouse in Maine.
In addition to lobster rolls, the food truck offers other menu items, such as lobster tacos and lobster tater tots, which appeared to be popular options for families wanting to split something.
Situated right at the base of the lighthouse, the food truck was in proximity to walking trails and spots to look out over Portland Harbor and Maine's rugged coastline. It didn't get any more New England than this.
The lobster roll came with a lemon wedge and was served chilled on a roll with a "touch of mayo," the menu on the side of the food truck stated. It cost $23.99, excluding tax.
To me, this lobster roll exemplified the best of what makes a classic lobster roll good, as well as an excellent location and price.
The large pieces of lobster meat practically melted in my mouth, and I thought the light smearing of mayonnaise inside the roll brought it all together.
From the prime seaside location to the price and the classic nature of this lobster roll, it truly did hit all of the marks.
My only complaint, however, was with the roll. I think I preferred the butteriness of some of the other rolls, and while this one was adequate, it wasn't my favorite.
The Portland Pier location is Luke's Lobster 's flagship location, though the chain actually started in New York City with a tiny lobster shack.
There are now restaurants all across the northeast, but the Portland restaurant is well known for its dockside location with panoramic views of the harbor.
It's also gained quite a reputation around town . In 2023, local residents voted it the best lobster roll in Portland .
When I told locals I would be trying different lobster rolls and determining the best one, nearly all of them had the same question: "Have you been to Luke's yet?"
This certainly set the stage for what I hoped would be a memorable lobster roll.
There was lots of seating inside and outside the restaurant when I went on a weekend, so I think it's pretty easy to get a table — something that's valuable when it comes to peak tourism season in Portland.
Inside the restaurant was clean, modern, and bright, but warm wooden accents and views of the water prevented the space from feeling clinical.
It came with chips and a pickle on the side and was available in two different sizes.
Like the other places I tried, I ordered the largest size available, which was the 6-ounce roll. It cost $37, excluding tax.
Luke's signature seasoning is made with celery seed powder, sea salt, and garlic powder.
The seasoning on top of the roll really amplified the salty, briny flavor, giving this lobster roll a unique taste.
The meat was succulent and plentiful, and though there was a light mayonnaise dressing holding the meat together, the lobster really spoke for itself. The bun was crispy, and I thought the chips also had a delightful crispy texture that complemented the roll.
From the location to the price to the roll itself, Luke's Lobster really impressed me. It was classic, with a unique twist, and it came with harbor views that really made me feel like a Mainer.
YORK (WGME) -- A Maine man is accused of shooting a pellet gun at neighbors and boats in York.
Police received a report around 10 p.m. on Friday that someone was firing a gun near Long Beach Ave. and Webber Road
A neighbor says she was outside when she heard a gunshot and felt something fly by her head. There were also other people outside at the time who took cover.
Police say they quickly identified 67-year-old David Ricker of York as the suspect.
They say he also shot at two boats offshore.
No one was hurt, according to police.
York police say they found his gun, an Umarex USA Legends replica MP40 rifle that shot high velocity pellets and .177 projectiles.
Ricker was arrested and charged with terrorizing and reckless conduct.
He was taken to the York County Jail.
The chairman of Morgan Stanley International was reportedly among the six missing people—including UK tech mogul Michael Lynch— after the 184-foot luxury sailing yacht Bayesian sank in rough seas near Sicily early Monday morning, according to new reports.
Italian emergency services headed out to sea towards the area off the Sicilian coast on Tuesday, ... [+] Aug. 20, 2024.
Lynch , a British tech entrepreneur and one-time billionaire, and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch are confirmed to be among those still missing after the ship sank (his wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued).
Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of the Morgan Stanley International bank and insurance company Hiscox, is also reportedly among the missing along with his wife, Judy.
Authorities on Monday told the BBC the missing people are presumed to still be inside the boat, and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning.
The vessel had 22 people on board — 10 crew and 12 passengers — including people from the United States, Britain and Canada, when it overturned at around 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Italian coast guard.
Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel (including a 1-year-old girl), one person was found dead and six, including two Americans , remain missing, according to multiple reports.
Local media reported the person who died was a member of the crew, thought to be the yacht’s chef .

Lynch, 59, and his daughter were the first to be reported as among the missing. Lynch's lawyer Chris Morvillo, a former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has also not been found, nor has his wife and jewelry designer Neda Morvillo. Bloomer, 70, a close friend of Lynch's, is also missing along with his wife, Judy.
The Bayesian was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a harsh storm hit the coast that included a " waterspout ," a tornado-like swirling column of air and water. The ship tipped over and quickly was drug underwater by its massive mast —it had the tallest aluminum mast in the world at 246 feet. Of the 15 people rescued in the aftermath, eight were treated at a local hospital.
Lynch was acquitted in a fraud trial in June after he was accused by Hewlett-Packard of artificially inflating the value of Autonomy before HP bought it for more than $11 billion in 2011. HP wrote off $8.8 million of Autonomy's value within a year of buying the company. Today, The Times estimates Lynch has a net worth of £500 million. He "had a lot of pride" in his yacht, a member of his staff told the U.K. paper, and business filings show the boat is legally owned by his wife, Bacares.
Stephen Chamberlain, who was acquitted in the same trial as Lynch in June, died hours after news broke of Lynch's disappearance. Chamberlain was hit by a car while jogging in England on Saturday morning and was put on life support before his death was announced late Monday, the Guardian reported . Lynch and Chamberlain were both indicted for conspiracy and wire fraud in the sale of Autonomy to HP before being acquitted.
An ongoing search operation includes divers attempting to search the vessel, now sitting 160 feet below sea level, as well as rescue boats and helicopters, according to CNN .
$215,000. That's the cost to charter the Bayesian, a single-mast sailing vessel, for one week .
“She told me that while they were sleeping, at a certain point the yacht overturned due to the tornado, and they found themselves in the water,” Dr. Domenico Cipolla, head of the emergency room at the pediatric hospital in Palermo, Italy, told The Times . “Some of them immediately managed to get onto the lifeboat. And some, evidently, didn’t make it.”
