Keeping your batteries topped up without having to run the engine is a continuous challenge for cruising sailors, especially those who are highly conscious of their carbon footprint or just wanting to cruise ‘off grid’.

Solar panels have been a good option for sustainable sailing in sunny conditions for some time, being almost maintenance-free and, unlike wind generators, silent. However, maritime conditions are a harsh test for even the best of them due to the incessant exposure they face from saltwater spray and, ironically, ultraviolet (UV) energy.

Now, though, new solar panel technology coming over the horizon promises further improvements in both their efficiency and ease of use.

Silicon cells

Most solar panels use silicon-based photovoltaic cells, with the most efficient type within this class being monocrystalline cells, made from a single pure ingot of silicon. Polycrystalline silicon cells, made from multiple silicon crystals bonded together, perform almost as efficiently as monocrystalline cells but are less expensive to produce.

Ordinary photovoltaic cells, meanwhile, which are the most commonly used, are much cheaper, lighter, and easier to mount where structural flexibility is needed.

The downside, though, is that their intrinsic chemical materials tend to be more environmentally hazardous and difficult to recycle at their end-of-life.

Perovskite revolution

The new buzz of excitement in the solar panel sector is coming from the development of perovskite solar cells, which promise 50% more efficiency than conventional photovoltaic solar cells in converting sunlight into electricity. They also have the extraordinary potential of being used in a liquid form, such as paint, and even being printed onto compatible surfaces.

Researchers are now reported to be trialling spray-on perovskite solar cells that could be applied as a tint for windows. Rigid Solar panels

Rigid solar panels currently on the market remain the most efficient and well-suited for mounting on larger boats with flatter surfaces. However, they are heavier, more awkward to mount, and can’t be walked on, so unless you have a hard top or dedicated gantry aft, you’re better off choosing a more resilient semi-flexible option.

Rigid solar panels are covered with impact-resistant glass in a metal frame, and often require hardware to install. Over time, the hardware and frame can corrode in unforgiving marine conditions, so it’s important to choose one with added weather protection.

Flexible Solar panels

Flexible solar panels, meanwhile, have become increasingly popular with yacht owners due to their versatility and adaptability. While not yet as efficient as rigid panels, they do offer a more eco-friendly and cost-effective option as well as being thin, light, bendable, and easy to install or mounted on almost any surface. You can, for instance, attach flexible solar panels easily to soft biminis and even sails.

However, attaching them to flexing surfaces may cause physical strain on the internal cells, causing damage in the long run. They also tend to have efficiency levels below 20% (compared to just above 20% for rigid solar panels), so they require more physical space to produce similar amounts of output.

They are usually encased in plastic coverings to make them more impact-resistant, but the plastic can degrade due to salt and UV.

Semi-flexible Solar panels

These are ideal for curved boat surfaces. The plastic covering on semi-flexible panels makes them highly resistant to impact and weight, in case you accidentally step on them while moving around a swaying boat.

Sailing enthusiasts working at the German engineering firm FLIN, based in Kiel, have developed a new broad range of versatile marine solar panel systems.

Products within the range include: the FLINrail, a rigid solar panel that can be used while sailing by being hooked onto a boat’s guardrails; the FLINstripe, designed to be mounted along a boom’s lazy bag using Velcro strips; and the FLINkite, a thin lightweight design comprised of up to six square panels that can be hoisted on a halyard and then tilted towards the sun using simple guide lines.

One owner who cruises a 40ft Fountaine Pajot Lavezzi catamaran in European waters has found that his FLIN installations have benefitted his cruising enormously.

‘We have four FLINflex panels mounted permanently on our built-in bimini, which produces around 450 watts while we’re sailing,’ he explains. ‘Then, when we’re at anchor or in port we can also set our FLINkite, which has six panels, each of which can produce up to around 50 watts.

We have a solar controller for each of the two systems and I’m able to monitor how well the systems are generating power using an app on my smartphone. Overall, the FLIN panels cover all of our electricity requirements, including our fridge and electric windlass. We’ve even now treated ourselves to an electric kettle!’

Foldable solar panels inspired by satellites

Origami Inspiration

Another exciting and innovative concept comes from two highly experienced sailors, Kim-Joar Myklebust and Sara Plaga, based in Milan, Italy. Together, they have designed and begun producing an origami-style marine solar panel made of recycled carbon fibre.

‘The idea came out of frustration,’ explains Kim-Joar. ‘We had regular power shortages on our sailing trips, even after we’d installed a large and bulky solar system which couldn’t keep our boat’s batteries charged.

‘As a motorsport design engineer I saw how space satellites used large solar panels that folded outwards to increase the area exposed to the sun, so I started cutting and folding a piece of paper until I found a shape I felt could work as a compact, fold-out solar panel on a boat.’

The couple’s firm, Levante, tested the effectiveness of their origami panels extensively aboard a 36ft cruising yacht, finding that their new product was 20% lighter than other foldable solar panels and 40% more compact, whilst producing only half of the CO2 footprint.

‘We’re determined to revolutionise the entire concept of marine solar panels,’ adds Sara. ‘You can use our origami solar panels in many different ways – just fold them up and use them on your boat, or at home, or anywhere you like.’

Solar panel maintenance

Solar panel efficiency is compromised by both salt water and long-term exposure to UV and high temperatures. Industry experts advise that good regular maintenance will improve a solar panel’s performance by around 15%.

You should clean solar panels early in the morning, while they are at their coolest, as cleaning them when they are warm or exposed to direct sunlight can cause internal thermal stresses. Always use distilled or de-ionized water to avoid the formation of mineral stains or deposits on the surface of the panels, and avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive solvents that could scratch the photovoltaic cells.

Let the panels air dry or use soft cloths, and make sure no water residue is left. You should also check regularly for cracks, breaks or loose connections.

But for boats with uneven surfaces, flexible solar panels can be a great option. Many flexible panels come with adhesive back surfaces — all you need to do is peel off the sticker and paste the solar panel on the hull. If you own two boats that you use alternatingly, you may even want to consider portable solar panels that can be laid down on the boat and packed and moved again within a few minutes.

Build Quality

The best solar panels can last 25 or more years. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, there are solar panels that stop working within two years. Solar panels are complex, sophisticated electronic devices, which means building a good-quality solar panel isn’t an easy feat. 

This makes it important to use products from reputable brands. Top-quality solar panels have a low rate of degradation. For example, a good solar panel will still generate 80% of its rated output after 20 years of operation. Many companies also offer a power production guarantee like the one mentioned above. It is also important to check the warranties on marine solar panels. A panel with a 10-year warranty is obviously a better choice than one with a 2-year warranty.

Waterproof Ratings

Solar panels are designed to be left outside in the rain, but when it comes to the cables or junction boxes, waterproof ratings vary dramatically. When shopping for a marine solar panel, be sure to check the IP ratings on the connectors, because you may want to add additional protection for heavy rain or waves. 

Are Solar Panels Worth it on a Boat?

Yes, solar panels are certainly worth it on a boat. Solar panels are quiet and clean, and there are no hassles of running out of fuel or frequent maintenance. With the right equipment, boat or yacht solar panels can power pretty much anything on a boat, and last for significantly long periods. Moreover, modern solar panels are also much cheaper than their older versions, making them a must-have on any boat. 

If you’re keeping a boat in a marina as a liveaboard, electric power can be notoriously expensive, and solar panels can help reduce the overall cost. For liveaboards on a mooring or anchorage, they’re necessary for keeping things charged (constantly running an engine or generator to charge batteries isn’t really a viable long-term option). Or, when you’re underway on day trips or longer adventures, solar panels can provide backup power in remote areas, so they are an excellent investment for any vessel. 

How to Charge a Marine Battery with a Solar Panel

Charging a marine battery with a solar panel is pretty straightforward. Solar panels generate direct current, which can be sent straight to the battery for storage, so you only need a charge controller to optimize the charging and improve safety. Just connect the solar panel’s terminals to the “PV” ports on the controller and connect the “battery” ports on the controller to a battery using another set of cables. From there, the charging begins.

The size of the battery will dictate the required size of your solar panel. If you have a 50 Ah, 12 V marine battery, this means you have a 600 Wh storage capacity (50 x 12 = 600). A typical, 160 W panel will generate around 600 Wh on a decently sunny day. You can also use a solar battery calculator to figure out the exact combination of solar panels and marine battery you’ll need. 

How to Install Solar Panels on a Boat

There are several ways to install solar panels on a boat. You can do a hard mount by drilling holes and securing the panel with nut bolts, or use a bimini-mounting system. Some solar panels can also be tied down to the boat with ropes or cables.

When installing wiring, you’ll want to invest in through-deck wire seals if you’re drilling holes through into the deck. These help to protect the core of the boat from water intrusion. If possible, it’s best to utilize existing tubing in the pulpits and stanchions to minimize the amount of exposed wiring. 

Thin, flexible solar panels can be pasted to the boat’s surface with an adhesive. However, if not pasted/caulked properly, these panels can catch wind and get damaged or come off entirely. Some good brands of durable adhesives /sealants are Boat Life, 3M, and Sikaflex. 

Solar panels can also be mounted on a pole using the correct mounting brackets. In places where the sunshine isn’t strong enough, it even makes sense to use adjustable brackets which allow you to change the orientation of the panel, helping it absorb more sunlight and generate more energy. These could also be mounted on the sides of the stern pulpit, and fold down or collapse when not in use. 

You can also utilize flexible panels on biminis, or create a solar arch structure that, with fixed or flexible panels, can be combined with wind turbines, antennas, and davits — but it takes some thinking outside of the box and creative designs. Before installing the panels, it might be helpful to map out a few ideas for ways to maximize space options and capture the most sunlight possible. 

How Many Solar Panels Are Needed to Power a Boat?

The number of solar panels needed to power a boat depends on the size of the boat, the number and wattage of the appliances on board, and the power rating of the solar panels. Typically, 200 to 300 watts of panels are sufficient enough to power a small to medium boat if there aren’t any power-hungry appliances on it. Considering the most popular panel size of 100 W, you would need two to three solar panels to power electrical equipment on a boat.

Are There Solar Powered Boats?

It is possible to build a boat that operates entirely on solar power, and several prototypes have already been built and demonstrated. However, to propel an entire boat will need a large number of solar panels. Usually, there isn’t enough space for this on traditional boats or yachts. 

Most solar-powered boats today are engineered to have extremely light structures and aerodynamic designs to minimize the number of solar panels needed. On the other hand, the energy density of gas or diesel is much higher, meaning a small fuel tank and motor can power the entire boat more easily, even if the boat is relatively heavy. Thankfully, marine and sailing yacht solar panels are becoming more efficient, and soon solar-powered boats may become mainstream.

For many in the boating community, boat solar panels represent something of a holy grail. They are, after all, the gift that keeps on giving, aren’t they? Free power forever, (or many years anyway), coupled with zero running costs – what could possibly be better than that?

All you have to do to make this dream come true is banish the memory of the purchase price from your mind – something boaters are notoriously adept at doing – and wait for the sun to shine. If only it were that simple…

The fact of the matter is that there are costs associated with boat solar panels beyond the price of the panels themselves. While some types of panels can be simply laid on the deck, in many cases some form of mount will be required.

Then there’s the wiring to hook them up to your battery, plus any fitment and/or cosmetic work needed to hide the cabling from view. If your panels are to be left connected permanently, you’ll require a regulator too.

This will prevent both overcharging and a reverse flow of power out of the battery after dark. If you do not fit a regulator, a blocking diode can be used to halt the reverse flow instead.

But once all of the above have been overcome – and providing you’ve done your homework to ensure your panels will generate sufficient power to cover your needs – then, yes, it’s a power free for all!

There are many other benefits to boat solar panels too: First and foremost, they work all on their own – solar panels are automatic, so you can just let them get on with the job.

Apart from the occasional wipe over and a wiring check, they’re largely maintenance-free too. Unlike wind generators, (especially like the one with wonky bearings on that boat moored next to you), they don’t make any noise.

After reading some negative user reviews on output voltage and amperage, I decided to look into this product myself. 

A bit of testing revealed the issue — the output really depends on the type of controller you use. If you get a quality MPPT (Multiple Power Point Tracker) controller, you’re all set. 

A controller converts excess voltage into more amperage for the battery, which really helps in charging in cloudy conditions.  

On the downside, these flexible solar panels for car roofs feel a bit more fragile than Renogy, so I wouldn't try fixing them for tents and mobile canopies.

I switch to a pair of these monocrystalline solar modules if I need a bit more power and although these are a bit larger than most panels I’m reviewing here, they fit nicely on my RV roof.

In my use, these Renogy flexible solar panels have excellent efficiency, even on overcast days. 

Once I tried charging them through the windshield, and after I came home from work, the 42000 mAh portable battery in my van was already fully charged.

With a water-resistant solar connector and the junction box, Renogy 175 Watt is also ideal for marine use.

Just remember to mount them using silicone adhesive on the backside — the grommets are for non-mobile uses only.

This SunPower flexible solar panel is a small but rugged ultralight panel that bends up to 30 degree s and folds easily for storage.

Depending on available sunlight, mine delivered anything between 50 and 100 watts. However, even in the shade, it gave me enough juice to power my 12V fridge.

On the downside, if you’re looking for a monocrystalline solar panel for your saltwater boat, you may want to look elsewhere. The warranty on this one does not cover saltwater use. 

Also, I hope SunPower makes connectors easier to disconnect. It's impossible to depress release tabs without a small screwdriver.

This means you can pack two for the same weight. 

They might look simple, but these flexible solar panels are packed with high-tech solutions. The solar cells use half-cut technology that allows the panel to produce more power for the same size.

This is especially important for outdoor and marine use, when panels may come under accidental shading from tree canopies or boat sails. 

Besides, when there’s no sun exposure a diode circuit prevents reverse current flow from the battery to the panels, which reduces their life span.

These semi-flexible panels from Topsolar use solar cells with back-contact technology which d on’t have electrodes on the surface. 

Thanks to this engineering hack, the conversion efficiency is increased to 50% more than panels with exposed electrodes. 

A single panel works like a charm with my 12V battery. If you use a 24V battery, you can easily connect multiple panels in series. Just remember to use a quality controller for the best results. 

Sadly, I learned the hard way that flexible doesn't mean portable with these panels. They are definitely not meant to be mounted and taken down on a regular basis. Only fixed installations for these ones.

Although it looks textured in the photo, the surface is smooth to the touch. It seems these panels have some kind of water-repellent coating that makes wiping water off very easy.

If you can’t fit one 40x20” panel, you can mount two 20x20” ones, and take your b oar off-grid, even if you don’t leave the marina at all. 

The panel feels solid and I hope it will last for years with normal use. Due to their size, these panels are perfect for camping and road-tripping. 

Still, due to the 50W rating, I can’t give this panel more stars. The math is simple — a 100W panel will recharge your battery twice as fast.

If I don’t want to bother with a solar generator, I can use a DC converter with USB outputs and charge my phone directly off the panel. Works on a sunny day.

The RICH SOLAR 80 Watt uses the amorphous silicon t hin-film technology that you can easily bend to match any kind of surface. 

The panel is for the most part made of polymers so it’s highly resistant to vibration and fire, but also unbelievably tough — It can even take some foot traffic.  

My only take on these panels is that they’re not the most weather-resistant option out there. Where I live we have scorching summers and unforgiving winters, and after two years of hard outdoor use, I see some delamination.

Use them with a 12V battery or connect two of t hem for a 24V system. 

It’s not the most flexible solar option out there, but it's surprisingly tough for monocrystalline technology. 

The panel backside is made of durable PET, the cell layer is sandwiched between two sheets of EVA, while the business side is protected with anti-scratch film.  

The only thing I don’t like is the packaging. Mine came in a torn-up box with no styrofoam to protect the face of the panel. Your mileage may vary, but this is something HQST and Amazon should definitely look into.

Things To Consider Before Buying A Flexible Solar Panel

This is the most important feature when choosing the right solar panel. The higher the wattage, the more devices you can plug in, and for a longer period of time.

For example, a 100-watt flexible solar panel is often used on boats, while 200-300-watt products are used on RVs or off-grid shacks.

To meet their solar power needs, users often connect several solar panels to get the combined wattage they want. The solar panel wattage is directly proportional to its cost.

The solar panel durability depends on the materials used for the solar panel and framing. Certain types of resilient plastic are used to protect solar cells from dust and moisture.

For example, ETFE plastic is a standard in high-end products and provides better durability and light transmission than cheaper PET and PTE materials. Also, keep in mind that crystalline solar panels are considered tougher than solar panels made with thin-film technology.

Leading manufacturers also make their panels water-resistant to be safely used in marine environments.

Solar Technology

There are two solar cell technologies that dominate the flexible solar panel market: crystalline silicon and thin-film.

  • The crystalline silicon technology is more widely used. There are two subtypes — polycrystalline solar and monocrystalline solar panels. This makes crystalline solar panels ideal for mildly curved surfaces like RV roofs.
  • Thin-film solar panels have photovoltaic layers that are about 300 times thinner than those of crystalline panels. This feature makes these solar panels super flexible so that some of them can even be rolled up for storage. These solar panels typically have self-adhesive surfaces so you can easily “paste” them on metal and glass surfaces. However, as wattage is considered, thin-film technology is way behind crystalline panels of the same size.

Installation

Unlike their rigid counterparts, you can easily install almost any kind of flexible solar panel yourself. Some even come with self-adhesive tapes or velcro, which makes the installation a no-brainer.

Still, if more methods are available, look for a company that provides a detailed installation guide. A company that invests in a quality manual is often the one that trusts the quality of its product. 

Lifespan 

Due to their bendable materials and portability, flexible solar panels can never reach the service life of their quality rooftop counterparts. You can use them for a variety of applications, but they will never last as long as rigid aluminum and glass solar panels.

This is why you should always look for panels with the longest lifespan .

Great article! One of the best things about solar panels is that you can set them up anywhere you want. The only trouble is when you’re eyeing irregular and uneven surfaces. Straight, rigid solar panels will topple over these.

We love the 4 Solar Cynergy panels I mounted on our RV so much I just ordered 2 more! A great value for the Wattage. With my current setup we can run our RV’s AC for @ 15 minutes/hour. At night we still have enough power to run fans (and the AC a little if it is warm), the tv, charge phones, run the refrigerator all the time and all of this while being stealth.

I am very happy with this Renogy 100W Extremely Flexible Monocrystalline Solar Panel. I use it to charge my Webetop 155Wh 42000mAh Portable Generator Power Inverter Battery 100W. I love it because it has unbeatable flexibility, capable of producing a 248-degree arc. It is exceptionally lightweight at about four pounds, which helps me easily carry it around and install it by myself. It is also 95% thinner than traditional solar panels, giving it a stealthy appearance on my RV. While it is lightweight, it can resist 5400 Pa of snow and 2400 Pa of strong winds. Its junction box is also IP68-rated. It makes me feel more comfortable about the product’s safety and performance.

Considering the material used to make the solar energy collection component of these thin film panels, are they the same/come from the same place as the standard regid solar panels? I had read somewhere about a process that used a “slury” type material that coated thin sheets and were used to collect the solar energy. The material was better for the environment as compared to the standard. Can you comment on this? I would like to see all local public transportation, school buses, USPS and delivery/pick-up companies use these type of panels to suppliment energy for hydraulic hybrid drive system vehicles. UPS and the EPA have very promising data on UPS trucks using the hydraulic drive systems. Using these panels would boost energy savings from 60-70% to well over 80%, reducing emissions by at least 60%.

Would this type of panel be good for a she shed? If I run a few electronics like a sewing machine & some lighting, 1-2 burner stove for tea, a blender & a few other small craft tools, possibly a portable heater…. I would be able to put up more than 1 as needed, but wondering if a “regular” panel would be better for me?

Using A Solar Battery Charger for Your Boat

Ultra-thin solar 'coating' can turn phone cases and EVs into mini power generators

Cheap and flexible perovskite solar cells could revolutionize solar power, making it easier than ever to power the world with sunlight.

Researchers have produced the world's first flexible "solar panel" that is thin enough to coat on other objects so they can double as a portable source of energy.

A breakthrough approach allowed scientists to create solar cells 150 times thinner than existing silicon-based panels, without sacrificing any of their energy-generating capabilities. These panels could eventually be applied to almost any object as an easily-printed layer, such as cars or smartphone cases, enabling anyone to charge on the go and negating the need for large solar farms, the scientists said.

The material the researchers made is just over one micron thick (0.001 mm). Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has certified this invention ahead of the publication of a scientific study later this year.

In the study, the University of Oxford researchers made a new photovoltaic material (capable of turning sunlight into energy) from perovskite structures. These crystal formations are synthetic versions of naturally occurring calcium titanium oxide that can be made relatively cheaply in labs or factories. Like silicon, the most common material used for solar cells, perovskite produces an electric charge in the presence of sunlight.

Scientists around the world have been racing to unlock the benefits of perovskites since the late 2000s. Sometimes described as the '"holy grail" of solar power , they theoretically allow for flexible, lightweight solar panels to be manufactured far more cheaply than current-generation silicon cells.

While perovskites hold immense potential, scientists have struggled to synthesize them to make them last beyond a few months. Perovskites are particularly prone to damage from too much moisture and can break apart after being exposed to the air via volatile chemical reactions.

Over time, researchers have found that perovskites can be kept stable in layered structures such as tandem cells, which combine perovskites and silicon cells. The team at Oxford opted for a "multi-junction" approach, in which several photosensitive layers corresponding to different wavelengths of light are combined to improve the photosensitivity of the overall solar material.

The resulting thin layer of solar film was 27% efficient when converting sunlight into energy — compared with the approximate 22% efficiency of silicon panels on the market today. The researchers noted that they have dramatically improved their results with perovskites in the past five years, having started at 6% efficiency.

In time, the researchers believe that perovskites could allow solar panels to exceed 45% efficiency — the upper limit based on current approaches and our understanding of physics. This will allow them to generate far more power for every square inch of solar material in operation, while also generating power in very low lighting.

A team of researchers from Oxford University has produced the world’s first flexible solar devices. They are thin enough to be coated over various objects, turning them into portable power sources. While flexible solar panels have been available on the market for some time, these new panels are distinguished by their ultra-thin design, measuring just over one micron thick.

The panels are made using a material called perovskite, which has been hailed by some in the industry as the “ holy grail ” of solar power. Perovskite’s appeal lies in its potential to create flexible, lightweight solar panels at a much cheaper cost than current models.

Yesterday in the Exumas I saw 39A @24vdc from the 3x410W panels.  Each panel was around 400 Watts which really exceeded my expectations.  Our gen run time has been cut nearly 50% and the peace of mind leaving the boat at anchor for day trips is priceless.  Thanks again for all your help with our system.

I've done two solar projects with Lyall at Sun Powered Yachts on the same boat. The first was with 2x flexible panels mounted on the Bimini with a total of about 340Watts.  The second was 3x 410Watt fixed frame panels, with all the charge controllers, circuit breakers and accessories needed. Thanks for all the help in planning my solar project for my boat. The two 170W flexible panels fit well on my Bimini and now I generally don't bother hooking up to shore power.  Although I haven’t had any long trips since my installation I have done a few day trips. And even with fridge, radio, plotters, autopilot and occasional radar it seems that these panels are keeping up with my usage. I did add some stiffener material to the back of the panels and attached the panels with zippers and they have survived a few 30 knot days and one night with winds gusting well over 55 knots. No damage at all and no signs of flexing problems.

Flexible solar panels achieve record-breaking efficiency

S cientists have achieved a record-breaking level of efficiency for flexible solar panels using the so-called ‘miracle material’ perovskite .

The lightweight solar panels , developed by researchers in Australia and the UK, were able to convert 11 per cent of the Sun’s energy into electricity, making them suitable for commercial use.

Their flexibility means they can also be deployed in previously impossible ways, such as on curved roofs, awnings or even vehicles.

The international team – made up of scientists from the University of Cambridge, Monash University, the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales – made the breakthrough using a new technique to print the solar cells on bendy rolls.

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), an Australian government agency who led the research project, said both the scale and the efficiency achieved during the tests made it a “real game changer” for the renewable energy industry.

“The cells are printed using a roll-to-roll technique similar to newspaper printing, which allows for continuous, large-scale production,” the organisation said in a statement.

“The dramatic increase in efficiency has paved the way for commercially-viable perovskite solar cell manufacture at scale.”

Perovskite has been widely hailed for its potential to vastly increase the efficiency of solar panels, offering a theoretical limit of 43 per cent when combined with silicon compared to just 29 per cent for conventional silicon (PV) solar cells.

Last November, researchers in China broke the efficiency record for solar panel electricity generation using a silicon-perovskite tandem solar cell, reaching 33.9 per cent efficiency under lab conditions.

Despite being a long way off this record, the 11 per cent achieved in the latest tests is far greater than the efficiency levels of around one or two per cent that printed flexible solar panels currently offer.

The next challenge is to scale them up for mass production, with the researchers saying they could be used in everything from disaster relief to space exploration.

CSIRO said it is currently looking to collaborate with industry partners in order to further develop and commercialise the next-generation solar panels.

The new solar panels were detailed in a study , titled ‘The first demonstration of entirely roll-to-roll fabricated perovskite solar cell modules under ambient room conditions’, published in the journal Nature Communications .
