Spain’s vibrant cities and diverse cruising grounds are rich with culture and well-equipped for welcoming superyachts, with over 300 hundred marinas spread along the country's 8,000 kilometres of stunning coastline. A luxury superyacht charter in Spain offers guests the chance to enjoy the mainland’s yachting hubs like Marbella in Andalusia, with its famous megayacht-lined Puerto Banús, as well as electric cities like Barcelona and the former America's Cup venue of Valencia. Spain yacht season and weather

The southern and eastern coasts of Spain have year-round balmy temperatures, with the Costa del Sol and the Balearic islands enjoying sunny days and temperatures in the low 20s even in November.

The Spanish charter season runs from May to October, when blue skies and warm weather prevails. Peak holiday months are July and August when average temperatures are between 25°C and 29°C, although temperatures regularly head into the 30s during the summer. During these peak months, resorts are bustling, nightlife is at its best but anchorages can be busy. Travel early or late in the season to miss the crowds and still enjoy plenty of sunshine.

From Marbella on the Costa del Sol to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Spain’s mainland coastline has a host of attractive options and facilities for visiting yachts.

On Spain’s southern coast, Puerto Banús marina has over 900 berths to accommodate yachts up to 50 metres (with the potential to accommodate larger craft if booking ahead) and has the pick of the glam nightlife right off the passerelle. Charterers on Spain’s sun-drenched south coast will find championship golf courses, chic beach clubs, traditional fishing towns and sweeping golden sandy beaches.

With the Costa Brava coastline littered with sandy bays and quaint, charming towns, and the enigmatic cities of Barcelona (teeming with Michelin-starred restaurants and incredible architecture) and Valencia (known for its museums and regatta racing history) lying in wait, plus artsy Sitges and historic sites such as the UNESCO listed Tarragona, it’s easy to spend a week or more exploring the colourful delights of Spain’s east coast.

Barcelona’s OneOcean Port Vell has berths up to 190 metres. Sailing yachts with masts higher than 55 metres must inform the marina as entry under the cable car line across the port will need to be arranged. Valencia Yacht Base offers berths for yachts up to 120 metres.

The Balearic Islands lie around 86 nautical miles west from Valencia and 100 nautical miles south of Barcelona and remain Spain’s most popular cruising destination, with Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza boasting a mix of irresistible calas, nature reserves and scintillating nightlife, with sleepy Formentera offering more spectacular coves.

For the Costa del Sol, Malaga airport serves commercial and private jets. On the Costa Brava, Girona airport handles commercial and private jet traffic. Multiple airports in Barcelona and Valencia also serve commercial and private jets.

As foreign-flagged boats may not start or end charters in Spain, typical routes into the country for charters include crossing from the French-Spanish border.

Legal requirements

All boats from outside the EU must report to customs officials on entry into Spain.

Unlike in some EU countries, where VAT tax can be reduced depending on time spent cruising outside of the country, Spain has a flat rate of 21% for VAT. Commerical charter yachts can however receive a break from Spanish matriculation tax.

Generally, but not in every case, local maritime safety regulations dictate that a maximum number of 12 guests are allowed on board a charter yacht.

Picking a boat type.

Picking out the type of boat to go with will generally come down to your budget, the group size, and preferred method of sailing. Moreover, different sailboats available can be chartered independently or with a fully-staffed crew.

Yacht skipper must have an official sailing license or a certificate issued by the government of state-approved organization:

– ICC (International Certificate of Competence)

– IPC(International Proficiency Certificate)

As in any other area in Spain, you need a sailing license to sail a recreational craft in the case of sailing vessels more than 6 meters in length, and engine-powered boats over 5 meters long and with over 11.26 kilowatts of power.

In addition, it is necessary to have a sailing license for the handling of any watercraft (except for rented vessels in certain circuits). For citizens of countries outside the European Union, a certified copy of their captain’s license may be required, which must be requested at the consulate.

Spain Yachting: When to Go

The Spanish coast and Balearic Islands enjoy a classic Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes rainy winters. And while it is accessible all year long, summer is prime yachting season in Spain, most notably in July and August. These peak months offer hot, sunny days and mild water temperatures that are perfect for outdoor adventures.

In the shoulder season months of May-June and September, the weather and conditions are excellent for yachting, as well. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s, with steady breezes and moderate swells. The shoulder season also offers a reprieve from the crowds of July and August.

Spain Yacht Charters – Where to Go

The majority of Spain yacht charters cruise the Balearic Islands. Regarded for their golden beaches, glimmering bays, and lively harbors, the Balearics – Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca – are one of Europe’s best destinations for a private yacht charter.

The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island, known for its lush, mountainous interior and picturesque seaside villages. The following VAT laws pertain to private yacht charters in Spanish waters:

• If a yacht only cruises through Spanish/EU waters, a standard 21% VAT rate will be applied.
• All yachts must register with the Spanish Government in each region it intends to charter.

Sailing around Spain

Whatever you want from a sailing holiday, you can almost certainly find it in Spain. Fine sunshine, brilliant food, happy and hospitable locals, and a massive variety of sailing opportunities - from bobbing around idyllic bays and calas to island-hopping in the Med to embracing the winds out in the Atlantic. There's plenty of wildlife to spot, and you'll never see so many stars in the sky as you can in the Canary islands.

Spain has a long and famous history of sailing (Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain, the world-beating Spanish Armada, etc…) and their islands are perfectly equipped for sea-farers to enjoy today. You'll find excellent marina facilities, cute and historic port towns, and authentic local culture - including local fisherman, flamenco dancers, freshly-cooked paella, and sangria on tap. A blissful week awaits, and we can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran.  

 SAILING RATING:  Beginner / Intermediate - The Balearic islands (we have bases in Palma, Portocolom and Ibiza) and Barcelona on the mainland are in the sheltered cruising ground of the Mediterranean sea, and suitable for sailors of all abilities.

The Canary islands (our bases in Arrecife and Tenerife) are based in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, offer more challenging sailing, with stronger winds, and are better suited for people who have solid experience of how to handle a boat.

 WHEN TO GO:  The sailing season technically runs from March to November , with peak season being in July and August, but there's sunshine for much of the year, and there's great sailing to be had outside of the season.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  You'll need an ICC (which you can convert from an RYA DaySkipper or equivalent ) or above to charter a boat in Spain. If you're not qualified, we can find you a professional skipper .

 VISA REQUIREMENTS:  Spain is part of the EU , which means UK and EU passport holders can travel there at will. US and Australian passport holders do not need a visa unless planning to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days.

 GETTING THERE:  There are a number of airports right across Spain and the islands, which are all well connected to the rest of Europe as it is a popular tourist destination. There's also good rail, road, bus and ferry links to get you to our bases. We can help arrange transfers to or from the marina, as well as helping you get provisions on board if your flight arrives late at night.

In the Balearic islands , for Palma and Portocolom it's best to land in Palma International airport, from which you can get to Palma in 15 minutes or Portocolom in 35. Similarly, our base in Ibiza is only a 30 minute transfer from Ibiza airport, which connects all over Europe. There's a choice of three airports near to our base in Barcelona , the closest is the main El Prat international airport (a 25 minute drive away), but it's also possible to land at Girona airport (1h15 away) or Reus airport (1h35 away). In the Canary islands , you'll land practically in the marina if you fly to the main Tenerife airport, and it's just 11 minutes drive away once you've grabbed your bags. And our base in Arrecife is just 14 minutes drive from Lanzarote airport.

Where to sail in Spain

We charter yachts and catamarans from six bases in Spain - Palma and Portocolom in Mallorca and Ibiza in the Mediterranean Balearic islands, Barcelona on the mainland, and Tenerife and Arrecife in the Canary islands. See below for ideas of where to sail when you get there (But be sure to check out our detailed destination guides to find out more).

  PALMA, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: There's relaxing times to be had in touring the many calas (bays) of Mallorca, and there are over 365 beaches! You can see them all by circumnavigating the 160 nM of Mallorca, or head up the (better) East coast to Menorca and back, visit the wilderness of Cabrera, or, if you're after more of a voyage, it's a 56 nM hop to Ibiza.

  PORTOCOLOM, MALLORCA   Ideas of where to sail: You're well-placed for exploring the superb East coast of Mallorca, with all it's incredible cliffs, bays and calas. Island-hop to nearby Menorca (less touristy, and even prettier than Mallorca), before returning via the wild islands of Cabrera to the South to get a taste of everything the area can offer.

  IBIZA   Ideas of where to sail: Ibiza is big enough for outstanding tranquillity, excellent beaches, beautiful calas and historic old towns - as well as late-night parties. A circular trip around the island is 60 nM, so you could expand it by hopping to nearby Formentera, which is largely off the beaten track and boasts pristine white sandy beaches over 6 miles long!

  BARCELONA   Ideas of where to sail: There's a choice of sailing South along the coast to Tarragona, once the capital of the Roman Empire, and the old town of Sitges, or North to the fortresses of Roses. En-route in either direction are brilliant beaches, cliffs, and coastal towns to explore.

  TENERIFE   Ideas of where to sail: There's blissful beaches, relaxing old towns and national parks to explore on Tenerife, or hop over to La Gomera to check out where Columbus set sail for America! If you're willing to put in the hours, it's also possible to sail to Gran Canaria or super-remote La Frontera.

  ARRECIFE, LANZAROTE   Ideas of where to sail: Head to Papagayo bay on the south coast of Lanzarote - arguably the best place to anchor and snorkel in the whole of the Canary islands, then hop to Fuerteventura and the wilderness of Los Lobos, named after the colony of monk seals there. Or sail to the North to the Chinijo archipalego, Europe's biggest national marine park, and play with the dolphins and whales - they love this place as much as you do!  

Cost of a Sailing Holiday in Spain?

Prices change depending upon what sort of boat you are chartering, and when you would like to charter, and yachting offers great value for money because the fee includes a full-day activity, a means of transport and your overnight accommodation!

Charters are normally in periods of a week, from Saturday (check-in at 5pm) to Saturday (check-out at 9am), though you're required to be back at the charter base on the Friday evening. You can charter a 3-cabin yacht for as little as €1,140/week (including end cleaning) , 4-cabin yacht from €1,250/week, or catamarans from €2,800/week - Use the pink box above for live prices and availability.

  In addition to the charter fee, there is an end-cleaning fee to be paid, and you'll need to leave a security deposit on check-in (similar to a hire car, and usually placed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card).  You also need to consider fuel and Mooring fees .

You can also add transfers, an outboard motor, early check-in, security deposit insurance or other extras to your booking (if they are not already included) for an additional fee.  We can also arrange for a Skipper , Hostess or Chef to be on board - in Spain, these normally cost an average of €1,260 per week, excluding tips.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

Suggested Sailing Itineraries

Suggested 1 week sailing itinerary from mallorca,  day 1 : puerto andraitx (17nm).

Embark at the marina in Palma. In the afternoon sail to Puerto Andraitx.

 DAY 2 : Puerto Soller (25nm)

Puerto Soller is carved out between spectacular mountains and the only port on the rocky west coast. Take the tram to the old town up in the mountains.

 DAY 3 : Puerto Pollensa (35nm)

On the north coast where the wild rugged coastline gives way to many sheltered anchorages.

 DAY 4 : Cala Rajada (25nm)

A small fishing village and on a longer trip the gateway to Menorca, just 21nm away.

 DAY 5 : Cala D’Or (18nm)

A beautiful triple bay with pine covered hills and white sandy beaches.

 DAY 6 : Cabrera Island (30nm)

South of Mallorca, Cabrera Island is now a Nature Reserve with a beautiful bay for excellent snorkelling.

 DAY 7 : Palma (35nm)

Mallorca has ideal conditions for a sailing holiday with steady afternoon breezes from the north Force 3-5. Stronger  mistral  winds can blow from the north-west for a few days. The passages between the Balearic islands are more exposed. Summer temperatures average 26-30ºC.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 2'  (levels info)  and you will need RYA Day Skipper or ICC qualification for bareboat charters in Mallorca. Level 1 sailors can stick to the south and east coasts where it is more sheltered, level 2 can circumnavigate the island whilst level 3 sailors may want to head to Ibiza and Fomentera or Menorca.

During ancient times, these ideally located islands were the sailing crossroads of the Mediterranean. Balearic islands are ideal for more experienced sailors.

Here’s the deal: With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, the Balearic Islands are a sailor's paradise. 

The best sailing conditions are between June and September and the prevailing wind is a NW Tramontana/Mistral. 

The temperature ranges between 20-25 degrees Celsius in the summer months and the almost constant cooling breeze provides a relief from the heat of the day.

Due to the fact that the vast majority of yachts are based in Mallorca, we do recommend starting your holiday from this island. 

But how can you go there? You can fly in and out of Palma de Mallorca Airport and charter out of one of the many marinas (i.e. Marina Port De Mallorca or Palma Cuarentena). Is there any alternative starting-point besides Mallorca or Palma? Another option would be to start your holiday in Ibiza; should you wish to sail from Ibiza, we suggest booking your yacht early in the year, as there are few fleets based there and they get booked very quickly.

While it is still popular with tourists, it’s the perfect destination to escape it all and immerse yourself in rest and relaxation, while surrounded by amazing scenery and culture. 

What to visit around Costa Brava?

Visit interesting villages like the medieval town, Besalú, or the white-washed Cadaqués, or the seaside towns of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc. 

Enjoy delightfully fresh seafood and al fresco dining in town - or from your yacht’s deck. 

It gets better. Meaning ‘wild coast,’ Costa Brava has some of the most amazing coastline, with rocky jagged cliffs framing the aqua blue Mediterranean waters in the hidden calas that you can only reach by boat. Walk the coastal paths that once connected fishing villages in the 19th century. Bottom line? Regardless of what you choose to do, a yacht charter in Costa Brava will be the experience of a lifetime! 

The best time for sailing Costa Brava is during between June-August when you can enjoy those long hot Mediterranean summer days. However, as Costa Brava enjoys mild weather almost all year long, the shoulder season of May and June are also lovely times to go. Now: Considering that Costa Brava has 300 days of sunshine a year, and an average humidity of about 70%, there really isn’t a bad time to visit Costa Brava.  

Average summer temperatures range from 27-30°C, and water temperatures of 23°C. Winter averages are between 8-12°C and water temperatures of 11°C. 

Summer is the driest season in Costa Brava, and you might see a bit more rain in the shoulder months. October is considered the rainiest time, with average monthly rainfall of about 90mm. 

As for winds, there is the Tramuntana which blows from West to Northwest in the mid-pyrenees and Perpignan regions. On the Mediterranean you’ll get northerly wind following the Bear, Creus and Begur capes. You’ll also get strong winds more frequently during October-April.

Option #1: The best way to get to our base located in Empuriabrava, is to fly into Barcelona’s international airport, which is about 163km from base. As the second largest airport in Spain, there are several flights daily from the UK, North America and the rest of the EU.  

From Barcelona-El Prat Airport: You can either go by car directly to base, or head into the city center and take the train to Figueras and then a taxi to base.

• The fast train is about 55 minutes to Figueras and then from Figueras to base is about 35 minutes by car.

Option #2: Alternatively you could fly into a smaller regional airport in Perpignan, or Girona, which are both a bit closer to Empuriabrava.

What language do they speak in Costa Brava?

Well, In Costa Brava, the predominant languages are Catalan and Spanish . 

Catalan is a regional dialect, but don’t worry most everyone you meet will know Spanish, and even some English as well. 

For mooring: Anchoring in the sand is allowed, but stay away from seaweeds and grasses. If available, use a mooring buoy. If not, try to make sure you are not over a seagrass bed. Restoring a seabed takes many years, but you can prevent any damage by diving under to patrol the area before anchoring. You can also tell by checking the coloring for the area below you. Light patches are likely sand and darker patches are usually seaweed or seagrass.

You can charter a yacht in Spain throughout the entire year . Both spring and autumn are great for sailing the Mediterranean - the weather is great, but you also have the advantage of escaping the big crowds that come to the area as soon as the summer starts. However, summer is the most popular time for chartering a yacht on the Balearic Islands. As well, a right time for yachting in the northern coast of Spain. Be careful, though, the Atlantic Ocean can get a bit rough at any time of the year and you might need to look for a haven in July or August as well.

If you want to rent a yacht in Spain during the winter, between November and February, the Canary Islands are the perfect choice. The climate is mainly sunny and warm , with temperatures very rarely going below  18°C all year round. Besides that, the sea temperature is constantly close to 22°C. There are three main types of climates on the Spanish Coast. Mediterranean Coast climate is characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, dry winters. The average temperature in the winter ranges between 5°C and 15°C, while going up to 26°C and 35°C during the yacht charter season. The sea temperature amounts to around 14°C in February and 25°C in August. Northern Spain climate is colder and much rainier, although the summer tends to be mild and sunny. The average temperature in the winter ranges between 5°C and 10°C, and between 15°C and 23°C during the summer, so keep that in mind if you want to charter a boat in Costa Verde. The sea temperature is around 10°C in February and 22°C in August.

Winds and tides.

The Spanish weather is fairly stable, but it can also be prone to winds , creating the perfect sailing conditions for those who want to embark on an adventure by boat. Borrasca is a thunderstorm or violent squall, especially in the Mediterranean and the Northern Part of Spain. It usually comes from NW, W. Chubasco is a rapid and strong downpour, it starts up very quickly but stops in a matter of minutes. It is quite common throughout the country. It doesn’t come from a specific direction.

Levante is a hot wind from E, NE, that can be especially strong in the Strait of Gibraltar, where the local conditions increase its power and speed. Another SW wind you will feel on your charter yacht in Spain is lebeche . This one coming from the Sahara, bringing elevated temperatures and sand from the desert. In the Canary Islands area, it is also known as calima . Galerna is stormy, hot, and very humid NW wind that arises unexpectedly on the north coast, especially during the summer season. Wind gusts can go up to more than 100 kilometres per hour. Tramontana originated in the French Central Massif and the Pyrenees, it is a N wind that blows strongly over the Balearic Islands and some parts of Catalonia. Sometimes it can reach speeds close to two hundred kilometres per hour. 

Normally, the heights of waves in the Mediterranean range between 0.5 and 1.5 m , and very rarely exceed 5 m. However, the Atlantic and Cantabria coasts are a whole different thing. There, waves can easily go beyond 10 meters during the winter. Actually, the biggest wave recorded in Spain was appeared near to Galicia and was 27,81 meters high.  

On the Mediterranean Coast, there are practically no tides . The Cantabrian Coast of Spain has a tidal range of 1 meter . On the Atlantic Coast (Galicia, Canary Islands) tidal range can go up to 2,8 m . 

You will hardly notice any sea currents on your charter yacht in the Mediterranean, but this changes on the Atlantic side of the Spanish coast. The Galician coast is under the influence of cold currents all year long, but the more east you sail, the warmer water you will get.

THE NORTH COAST OF SPAIN

Galicia is a unique and beautiful region framed by mountains, dotted with traditional ancient villages and oozing in Spanish history. Celtic carved-stone crosses and stones and fort-villages tell stories of the Galicians’ Celtic ancestors old. There is just so much to see from a sailing holiday in Spain.

A historic fishing and trading port, La Coruña is located on the North coast. The historic part of town is home to an interesting Romanesque road network with squares and medieval churches as well as the Hercules Tower, the oldest lighthouse in the world. The Museum of Fine Arts, with works by Goya and others on display, is also worth a visit.

SAILING THE SPANISH COAST

The air is full of the scent of eucalyptus drifting down from the mountains and this wild coast is frayed by the majestic collection of coastal inlets named Rías Baixas. The Rías Baixas are a series of four estuaries turning into magnificent Fjords located on the southwestern coast of Galicia. Sailing through and exploring these Fjords by boat is a truly breathtaking experience and the vastness of the cliff line dropping swiftly down to long stretches of deserted sandy beaches and hidden coves is a fascinating sight.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"
